I made reservations at the Pet Hotel for my dog. My dog has anxiety so I wanted to make sure that they would be able to board him. Per their recommendation, I brought in my dog before his stay as a test run to see if the staff would be able to manage him. This day, he was very friendly with the staff and they assured me that it would not be a problem to board him. Great! Fast forward to check in day...did not go as planned. They told me that they would not be able to board him because he was growling at them and they were not able to handle him. I was upset and shocked because I took him in two weeks ago and was told something different. Since they were not able to board him, I had to cancel my trip to Florida and spent the holidays alone. I stopped in yesterday to pick up treats for my dog and cat and decided to pass by the fish, as I used to keep some and love watching them. Was heartbroken and disturbed to see numerous dead swordtails and african dwarf frogs in a tank that posted in large : "Free Water Testing." This is also harmful to the other fish in the tank, as decomposing fish can rapidly alter tank condition. I know Petco is a massive co. that likely gets their animals from large distributors but surely as a pet store they should be able to keep them alive and well. Please DO NOT COME HERE. consider rescuing your fish from previous homes or visiting an aquaculture in which they are bred and raised in solid conditions. what a mess... Had a really good puppy play date last Sunday. There were about 10 puppies 10-20 weeks old and mostly small breeds, which was good since my pup is 9 lbs. There were two-three trainers in the event to stop any aggressive manners and to bring shy pups into playing. There were toys and water for them to enjoy. My puppy had a wonderful time there and slept for hours after we got home. The event is totally free and they even gave us gifts (odor spray) which was so nice! Definitely going to this event again next month! read more

She showed no enthusiasm about the process, was dismissive, disinterested and downright unprofessional. She asked me to bring in some paperwork (which I did) and when I went in with it she asked me to bring more paperwork. Why didn't you say so the first time around!!! When I told her I don't understand why is it so hard to take a cat home where he will be cared for she tells me.. oh why don't you try another adoption place. She followed my instructions exactly, including which specific nails needed to be cut (and which to ignore), and finished earlier than expected. And she handled my nervous dog with kindness and care. Our 2 pit bull mixes stayed overnight at this location. With a bath/nail trim, larger room and extra playtime we paid about $180 for an overnight stay. We also opted to bring in our own food to try to save a bit more money. The workers were very professional and handled our dogs with care. They are on the larger side and when they get excited they can be a handful. The employees still handled them with grace which was nice to see. I strongly suggest that if your dog is staying overnight, you get a larger room for them. Walking past the smaller rooms with the bigger dogs inside of them was very sad to see. They need better employees at their pet hotel. Dropped off my dog (a 75lb sheepdog) for about 3 hours for a private day stay. When i picked him up, his whole rear end was covered in poop. Poop had already dried and was stuck all over his thick fur. I asked the ladiea at the front desk of the dog hotel and their answer was that they dont know how or where he got the poop on him and laughed it off like it was nothing. My dog is potty trained and has never pooped inside. So, i doubt it was his poop. I think the private cage/room they put him in had poop in there from a previous dog. And they never bothered to clean it up and put my dog in there. So, chances are my dog ate some other dogs poop in a dirty uncleaned room and the employees there didnt even bother to notice or clean him. This is how your dog gets sick. Teenagers or twenty something old employees addicted to their phones probably dont make good employees at a dog hotel. Petsmart dog hotels are not a good option if you care for your dog. Had a somewhat bad experience with the one in Dublin as well. I dont think your dog's wellbeing is Petsmart Dog Hotel's top priority. So, be warned and dont take your dogs there. read more

We will be coming back here for most all of our pet needs! The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and courteous. They will seek you out to see if you have questions, but not be pushy about it. We just purchased a terrarium for housing a couple of carnivorous plants. It was a little pricey for a 2.5 gallon plexiglass "box," but worth it for the service we received. Once we picked up Hamlet from Doggy Day Camp, we noticed a white area on his cheek. We couldn't really tell what it was. Upon further inspection, we noticed bite marks above his eye and on his cheek. It turns out he got bit in the eye by another dog at Doggy Day Camp. The room is just too small, with way too many dogs, and only one person monitoring and picking up poo and cleaning pee. I have attached a picture of Hamlet's scar for you to see. He will never again go to Doggy Day Camp. It goes to show you cannot trust others with something you should be responsible for yourself, and that is your beloved pet. I really hope the hair grows back on his cheek. :( read more

My friend works at Petsmart. They have somehow got themselves designated as an "essential business" because for some strange reason covid prevents people from ordering online now so Petsmart must keep the doors open -- endangering every single person working there. No personal protective equipment are provided and social distancing is loosely enforced. If a customer comes up to an employee with a question and is too close, the employee is not allowed to move away from the "pet parent." Their refusal to close their doors means employees are not allowed to isolate in order to protect themselves from the virus. Also at least one employee has fallen ill and been sent home, which means every other employee and customer has been exposed. When my friend told them she was scared because she's caring for an elderly family member, therefore would be unable to safely come in for work until this is over, they SHAMED her. Told her that their parents and grandparents are also old, but they were proud that they came to work anyway, as if being a corporate stepford wife is a good thing -- and as if that doesn't mean they're just not smart people because who in their right mind exposes their family to this virus?! I used to love Petsmart. No more. They are willing to risk my friend's life and the life of every customer who enters the store.... in order to sell a dog collar. I'll never shop there again, nor will I take my dog for a grooming, and I'll be helping my friend to find a job that actually cares whether their employees live or die. Cons: I've seen some really, REALLY sick fish here. I pointed out that one of their fish tanks were infected with ich, and the cashier replied "who cares". I CARE. August 3rd, 2008, at approximately 14:00 hours. Before heading to Anaheim for our vacation, we dropped off Maxie at their Pet Hotel. Maxie kinda got a sense that we were leaving her again as she had the "look" on her eyes. The kind of look that translates to "What did I do to deserve this?" She eventually got over it once we stepped inside the friendly confines. Her tail begins to wag from side to side indicating she is happy. Look, they have small dogs playing in the training room. She's looking through the glass doors and wants to join them at play. Sorry, Maxie...you're too big for those little doggies. She looks at me as if to say, "But they all look so happy and they don't mind if I join them?" Maybe next time. In the meantime, we have to check you in. We get to the counter and they're very friendly as usual. They have her records on file and we give them our updated vaccination forms. For extras, they have different options for play time with treats. Of course, they all cost a few bones but she's worth it. Before you know it, it's time say goodbye and they take her inside with her food, bed and stuff in tow. She's been here before, and she looks perfectly fine. When we picked her up on Friday, August 8th, she was excited to see us and her tail was whipping this time. It was like a fan that was turned on doing 300 RPM. She was looking left, she was looking right and she couldn't control her joy. She was jumping on us while licking our faces with a large drool down her mouth. Eewww, you smell like you came from pound. Time to give you a bath as soon as we get you home. But as usual, we have to browse the rest of the stores to see what they have. Oh, more goodies and toys for them to chew and destroy. In the process, we meet one of the trainers. We talk for several minutes and gives me some free pointers. Please don't display bettas in cups. They can easily be housed in 10 gallons or more. Keeping them in cups is misleading to consumers who will continue the practice and purchase 1 gallon habitats which are too small and inhumane. Cups also require frequent water changes which clearly the team at this store has not been doing. Please see the photo of the dead betta. I would like Petsmart to reconsider their decision to sell Red-Eared Slider turtles which may harbor salmonella and can grow to nearly 1' in length and live to half a century. How many customers can create a secure escape proof outdoor pond and enclosure? They truly deserve to live outdoors especially in our mild weather to enjoy real sunlight and plenty of swim space. Many of the tanks you sell will not be able to house a full grown slider in 1-2 years. They need 75-100 gallons + stand + powerful filter which will be a huge cost for most families. Red-Eared Sliders are one of the most commonly abandoned reptiles. Furthermore, people have been dumping them in local waterways where they starve to death or compete with our native Western Pond Turtle. This drought has been killing these dumped turtles and other wildlife. People are welcome to apply with the local humane society to adopt many of these homeless turtles. read more

Do not get your dogs groomed here! I'm convinced the groomers don't know what they're doing. Golden retrievers are NEVER supposed to be shaved. My dad asked for a shorter haircut for our golden and was offered a "summer cut" which apparently means a literal buzz cut ????? The same thing happened to my friend's dog. After this experience we will no longer be taking our dog to get groomed here, and I suggest you also look otherwise for your grooming needs. We usually prefer smaller, local business but we are new and our shaggy Shih tzu needed a haircut badly. We were so happy with the results! I don't normally review big box stores but I was so impressed with the staff here. They genuinely know a lot about animals and animal care - and they go the extra mile to make sure you can care for your pet. Here's the story: My 3 and 5 year old wanted a pet. I talked them our of an octopus and instead we got 2 beta fish. The 2 staff who helped us were great - setting more realistic expectations on our part. I thought this was a $5 investment. It was not. They told us what to do and how to do it correctly. The next day our fish weren't looking great so I called the store. They had me come in with a water sample, tested it, and sent me home with directions to fix the ph levels and warm the fish up. Great experience and happy kids! read more

The employees are also very helpful, and VERY dog friendly. I have never owned a dog before, but coming here with my friend I have come to realize how much other people love dogs. Doggie Day Camp review: If you value your time, don't come here because they won't value YOUR time. I needed to drop of pup in order to make an interview on time. I had budgeted 15 minutes to do the drop off. Here's how they consumed the 15 minutes. 5 minutes waiting for one person to handle the line of customers. 5 minutes waiting for a different person and come to take the pet to the Pet Hotel. When I got to the front of the line, I said I have a job interview, can we speed this up? No acknowledgement at all. She starts asking questions, but she can't enter me into the computer because she's still checking out someone else. Finally another worker comes to work the other register. 5 minutes of asking the same questions: Will she eat lunch? Dinner? I made the mistake of asking about whether she could be groomed while she was here. That's really the whole point of coming here in the first place. I'm not going to have time to wait around while the puppy is being groomed, so it would be nice to have her groomed while I was at the job interview. She says, "Can you repeat that?" So I tell her once again that I have to hurry to make a job interview. Without listening at all, she says, "Sorry, I wasn't talking to you." Turns out, she was on the phone to the groomer without telling me anything. 5 more minutes. Then, they asked, "Can you wait nere?" I said, "No, I have an interview. If you can groom her, do it. Otherwise, don't. I have to go to an interview." I say this loudly because it's about the third time I've said it with literally nobody hearing or caring. From across the room, the other worker shouts, "Sir, you're going to have to keep your voice down." My head is about to explode. Finally, I ask in a subdued tone, "Can you groom her while she's here?" Then, there's a long explanation of why the groomer must meet me and ask me questions. I say, "I can't do that. I told you that I have to go to a job interview." They give me more useless information about the groomer and how they have to do whatever it is that is their actual job to get a groomer onto the premises. I don't care. That's the whole point of coming here is so that I don't have to deal with those details. Yet here she is torturing me the details of how to do her job. Finally, I tell them, no I don't want the groomer just so that I can get out of this hell forsaken place and go to the job interview. I was one shred of sanity away from having a puppy die of heat stroke in a car due to these workers. In the end, they offer to wash the puppy. I say, Yes, please, wash the puppy if you could. Of course, you guessed it. When I pick up the puppy, she is not washed. The worker there asked me if I ordered a wash. I say yes. It is the exact same worker who was there the whole time (the second one) who was the one who offered the wash. If you value your time and your sanity, do yourself a favor and find a company that understands that your lack of time is the exact reason that you're bringing a pet to a pet hotel for 7 hours to be groomed rather than waiting around at the actual groomers. The entire point of bringing the puppy here is to have them manage the details of that kind of interaction. But they are not capable of doing it, so you might as well find some other place which understand why their customers would want to spend money SAVING TIME. Because not only do they not understand that here, but they will frustrate you by wasting your time in front of your face and then tell you to shut up. read more

My friends & I went in today to get some items for my friends new pet Rat. Along with a new collar & leash for my puppy. Good selection. Was looking for Cameo print for a boy dog, but no such luck. Came across a nice set. Very nice, thick, holds well in my hand. Really pretty color & material. We tried it on him while we were there to make sure it would fit. He likes it. This place is my one stop shop for my dog. They have a great selection of food, treats, and toys here. I love that they have a crazy amount of organic hippie/dippie dog food, because even though I'll go next door and eat at Chipotle, I want my dog to eat free range venison. Yeah, he's spoiled...I know.... They also have good dog grooming. My dog is a pomeranian with a craaaazy thick coat. I've taken him here at least 5 times now, but they get a minus 2 stars for taking 4 hours (no joke) the last time they groomed him. However, the quality of the cut was great, so they get 1 star back. My dog, Bjorn (named after the tennis player) also received doggie training classes here. His trainer was Helena and we used her for the puppy class, intermediate, and advanced training. She was amazing. She had a hard time remembering his name (totally ok, because his name is goofy and swedish), but always remembered him and his strengths and weaknesses. She would even spend extra time with us before and after classes. Now, 2 years later, she still remembers us and even gave me a little toy for my dog. :) How sweet is that? We probably bring our dog in about once a month to pick up food or whatever. It's totally worth it because it is his absolute favorite place besides the dog park. read more

Anyhow, after my Petco chinchilla died , I came to the Mountain View location and picked up two male chinchillas here . The staff new alot about chinchillas and the cages here seemed way more clean and properly maintained. My chinchillas from here are two happy healthy little fur balls of love ! Horrible service, do not bring your pet here. My dog is not allowed to be with others since he's not neutered so I pay for extra walks and outdoor time and every time I pick him up to double check he was taken out no one knows anything . My dog got sick here multiple times and most staff are not fit for this job. No one seems to know what's going on, information is not passed on to the up coming shift. And most don't know how to calm or control the dogs. My dog is super big and hyper and drags all the staff, I've asked staff to bring him wearing his appropriate collar and leash that suits his size so pick his are easier and it's never done. I wouldn't be surprised if they mistreat the dogs behind our backs!! read more

My sister had called for an appointment and it took close to 7 hours to get her dog back. The appointment was at 1pm and there was no courtesy call nor call to pick up her dog. By the time they picked up the dog it was 7 hours later. The job was horrible and it looked so uneven. I could do a better job. Then my brother ask for some discount for the crappy job and service. They didn't apply it so he asked to have a military discount they said no. In the end they gave 10 % off after twisting an arm. TL;DR -- don't come here to buy a pet, but if you must, do your research before coming because the employees here know very little about the livestock and you will not get good advice from them. If you need pet supplies, go to Pet Food Express which is less than a mile away. That way you won't be supporting Petsmart's bad practices. I don't really recommend coming here if you want to buy a pet. They sell small pets such as birds, chinchillas, hamsters, and mice, and I don't have experience with these pets but I know that you will probably want to adopt or get from a breeder instead of buying them from a chain pet store that puts profits above the animals' well beings. For me, I'm into fish. Although I understand needing to keep bettas in cups while they are waiting to be sold (even nicer aquarium stores keep bettas in jars temporarily), I don't agree with selling tiny tanks that are definitely not suitable for bettas or any type of fish. For example, did you know that goldfish poop a ton and are actually not a very good starter pet? They require 20 gallons for one goldfish and another 10 gallons for every other extra goldfish after that and tons of filtration since they poop so much. Bettas can't thrive in little cups or 0.5 gallon tanks, they require at least 3-5 gallons to be happy, and they need a heater because they are tropical fish. NO fish can live in a bowl, so the fact that Petsmart even sells them is sad, and all fish need a filter for beneficial bacteria growth. Also, the community tanks in the back are full of pest snails and dead fish, so if you do buy a fish from here, it might be diseased or contaminated with something already. I've seen the bettas with tons of food and rotting food in their cups and although I want to "rescue" the bettas from Petsmart, the best way to get them to stop selling the fish this way is to stop buying them. Buying food or supplies here also supports Petsmart and their horrible practices. It's sad that the employees know little to nothing about the livestock they're selling. If you do want to buy pet supplies, I suggest Pet Food Express in Palo Alto which is just a 5 min drive away from this Petsmart. They are known for their charity work and high quality pet supplies (and have almost 5 stars on Yelp). The only thing I would recommend coming to this Petsmart for is to adopt a cat, they have cat adoption fairs almost every day and partner with a separate cat rescue to do so. Otherwise, you can adopt dogs from Pet Food Express's dog adoption events, you can get fish from Aqua Lab Aquaria in San Jose (a great aquarium store with a very knowledgeable owner who will help you with everything you need on setting up your new aquarium), and you can get other small pets for adoption almost anywhere else (look in Petfinder.com or just Google 'bunny adoption in my area'). Again, if you must buy from here, make sure you do your research, but be aware that you are supporting a chain pet store that prioritizes profit over the lives of their animals. read more

Our Maltipoo came back with an haircut than nobody would like to see: uneven, back legs and tail partially shaved (we never ask for this) and nothing done on body and neck. Last year I was in line at the cashier(Christine) when my turn came she told me she cannot help me because she was going on her break she did not call a back-up and left. I waited for 10 minutes and did not see anyone coming so I left and called the manager she supported the cashier's action and there was no response from the store so I called the corporate office to complain my concerns were ignored. I am sure this must have happened a lot there and customers stopped giving them their business because there are other better places to shop and now this and many other Petsmart stores are closing in December 2021.
