The only thing good about this place is the food. It's amazing. That is, when you can actually get it, which is unfortunate because this place could have incredible potential if the staff was competent. Flashback to a month or two ago. The weather was about to get bad, so the g/f and I decided to order some food to go before the storm came in. We placed an online order through their website. We arrived at the time the site said the food would be ready, only to be met with puzzled stares from the staff. They had received no online order. We showed the cashier the order confirmation and they informed us the online ordering system was having some issues. Ok, fine. Fast forward to today, about an hour ago, the g/f and her friend wanted to meet up for brunch, so we decided on coming here. Their menu clearly states that brunch is "All Day Sunday, 9am - 4 pm". We get in line and begin to order brunch, when the cashier girl tells us they're, "Not doing brunch today." I told her that was the whole reason we came. She replied that they were having some, "Complications" - whatever that means. Strike one. I order a sugar-free vanilla latte. My g/f, who was standing next to me, told me they didn't have any. Before I showed up, she ordered a sugar-free vanilla coffee and was told by the girl cashier that they didn't have any sugar-free vanilla syrup. When I asked if they did (I had ordered this on my first visit), the cashier girl asked and magically they had a full bottle of sugar-free vanilla syrup. Strike two. We then place our food orders. I ordered a sandwich with a "V" in the name. It's not on their online menu, but it is on the menu in the store. It has turkey, bacon, cheese and avocado. I pay and then find my seat. Shortly after ordering, the same guy who took my order comes out to our table to tell us they don't have any avocado! STRIKE. THREE. If you like to be forced into ordering something you didn't want because what you do want is not being offered that day, go here. I've been here twice and both times have been complete failures. Hate when I can't give 5 stars. They got 5 stars for personality, but lost a few along the way. This was pre-covid19. There were only 3 diners before noon...2 tables. After a very long wait, I watched my order being placed on the other occupied table. Innocent mistake, right? One plate of food for table of two? I was concerned that after my food was placed under an unknown (to me) man's nose, they brought it over to me after looking at it suspiciously. Oh, it was breakfast...eggs..toast..hashbrowns. I didn't think that ketchup was an unusual request until I had to ask a 2nd person. Never got the ketchup as they said they looked everywhere and it was not. This being said, I would've just not left a review and wouldn't have returned. I started looking around and must admit, it is a catchy theme. If they would've just cleaned the overhead vents and fans. Not sure how the health department overlooks this. If they purposely have all that filth hanging overhead, kudos to the design department. I am sure it looks better with low bar lighting at night. And, yes, I still tipped. Think more of a mgmt issue. read more

Specifically directing this review to their other location, 2Phat about a mile away: 2 years ago this place used to have a huge following that people would wait in line for. There were regulars who came in and happily gave decent tips. They can't seem to keep staff employed for more than a few months. They are constantly short of main ingredients for their advertised food. Since then I know several people who have gotten very sick from the food, including myself. They constantly, and I mean constantly messing up online orders, like probably 40% of the time. I am not talking about leaving out an ingredient, I'm talking will charge your card and not make the food at all. This has happened 10-15 times to me alone. Overall poor experience. Poorly organized, staff would not accept that their food was not up to par. This place needs to go through a health inspection. If you want a unique and different experience this is THE SPOT! I love the black bean burger and the gotta getta. That's my jam. It's a little over whelming when you go in because the atmosphere can be chaotic and you feel like everyone knows what they are doing but you. And then you have to keep turning around to look at the massive menu but you just want food because your hungry. My suggestions. So I'm visiting my daughter and spouse and after going to the "best Ace Hardware store" experience, we stopped next door at Phat Bites for lunch. Quirky, and I guess, hip, the place is eclectic and different. The salads looked tasty but I did not try. But the sandwiches were great! We split a Ruben, Hot Affair and the Muffaletta. All three hit the spot. I see that service has been a complaint of the past, but we had absolutely no issue. I do wish they carried a better variety of beverages. But if it's a good sandwich reasonably priced....go for it. I will definitely return. Oh by the way there is a cool bar attached to the space and a stage for performance. Well our son turned 15 today wanted to go to Phat Bites for his birthday dinner....we have just moved back to the area and have not made it there yet been gone 3 years......WELL its still amazing. I've been a huge fan of Phat Bites since they were in their previous location and long before Food Network featured them. The food is different but delicious, the funky vibe is FUN, and its one of the few places I feel 100% comfortable going to eat at alone. A majority of the time, I order the meat and 2-sides, especially if I am in a hurry. I always get the Southwest Chicken Salad and the spicy noodles... my second side is different every time. But I'm super loyal to the first two. I used to always ask for it to-go, because I couldn't finish the plate and it made for a wonderful snack later in the day. Quick, easy and a great value. The last couple of times I've gone, however, I don't get nearly as much food as I once did.I've gone from, "Wow what a great value!" to, "Eh, didn't get as much food as I paid for..." I'm still giving 4-stars, because I'm not sure that I'm being unfair comparing it to years past and not considering the changing climate of the Nashville economy. I am gonna give this place a 3 out of 5 purely based on the food. They have a wide variety of hummus and I had the chicken salad which was really good. HOWEVER, when my friend and I went in to eat we saw a mouse run across the floor. Coincidentally,right before this my friend mentioned how dirty the place looked and right after we saw the rodent. Love this place! Always plenty of seating and parking. Food is always prepared fresh, I love the hummus bar. Everything I've tried here has been amazing, though portions can be pretty large, so prepare to share or take leftovers. Service is generally excellent, it's a good local spot. The Hummus, good lord the hummus! Walked the Greenway and was starving! We were greeted by a friendly employee who found it was our first visit and gave us the lowdown. We decided on the Ninja Bomb and Eat My Tuna wraps, and the Big Jerk sandwichs. The Eat My Tuna was good but the Ninja Bomb and Big Jerk were amazingly good! We also got the Hummus Envy which is two flavors of Hummus topped with, well..everything, and THAT! That my friends was slap yo momma, aunt Lil, and cousin Joe good!!! The atmosphere is extremely unique as this place is in a converted garage type building... Very unique decor... Funky... I should have known something was amiss when person taking my order actually , as aforementioned by several other writers , was not knowledgeable about menu items... So I proceeded to get some curry chicken and a sandwich off of the menu, chips and a drink... All for just under $20 I got my chicken, chips, drink... Went to my table with my friend and proceeded to wait for my sandwich... I did notice that several other people came in and got their food after me... I thought perhaps my sandwich required some sort of special preparation and did not immediately have concern After 20 minutes I did go to the counter and ask about my sandwich and the girl behind the counter told me she would check on it... She look up a few minutes later and said we are checking on that for you... Based on my observation this actually meant that my order has been completely forgotten about somehow and they were not making my sandwich... This would have been great had I not been on some sort of schedule... So when they brought my sandwich I did ask for a to-go box and got my sandwich to go... The one job a restaurant has is to get food to the customers that have paid for it... One job... One job... Holy hipster! I enjoyed this little place in a strip mall off of Lebanon Pike but I would have to warn others to expect a hipster/green atmosphere before heading here. It was cool and made me feel a little more edgy and healthy but I'm not sure it's for everyone. As far as the food, I came in and got a to-go wrap and Kale Salad today. The Ninja Bomb was a surprise. I did not expect the bag to weigh as much as it did when I picked it up and was amazed at the size, freshness, and flavor of the wrap. It's got chinese chicken salad, granola, carrots, lettuce, and raspberry vinaigrette for a crunchy, sweet wrap flavor. It's so good! The Kale Salad was also excellent as a side and had pecans, golden raisins, and couscous (I think) in it. It was just the right flavor and didn't include any unwanted flavors that Whole Foods often puts in theirs like red onions. Pros: Serving size and flavor. I was able to split the wrap and have two full meals off of the side salad and wrap. It was really impressive. The staff was kind, approachable, and happy to serve their guests. Cons: The atmosphere isn't very approachable for out of town guests so I'll just have to get them to trust me about the food. I work super close to the new location of Phat Bites and finally had time today to stop by for some takeout. The new location is awkward to say the least. The inside order area/menu area is also super awkward and doesn't make sense, not to mention the food prep area looks like such a hot mess. They were cooking something on a single portable burner. What?! Anyway. I walked in while another customer was finishing her order. There were two girls helping her, one of which was wearing booty shorts and boots, which was strange to see in a restaurant. I felt like I was at Deja Vu. The lady ordered and I stepped up to order but both of the girls walked off. They walked back my way about 3 or 4 times and the male cook also looked at me and no one seemed to think that I was of any importance. I stood at the counter for about 4 more minutes before turning around and walking out. I almost told the businessman who was walking in to go elsewhere, but I decided not to take that route. I was super excited to eat at Phat Bites because it's maybe a block away from my job and I needed a new place to eat on a regular basis. Based on my visit today, I won't be returning. Learn some customer service skills, dress like you have some self respect, and get some management in this place. If you're too busy to help a customer immediately, ACKNOWLEDGE THEM. She had taken my order and repeated what i said to someone else who showed her how to put my order in. got my food and waited 25min and still no coffee. I've been coming to Phat Bites for 6 years since I moved to Donelson. The food and quality of service has been going down year over year unfortunately. I keep coming back in hopes it will improve. It always seems to be disarray inside the restaurant. Today, a pickup order of a Julie's Caesar salad took 30 minutes, and they didn't include peppers or pesto on it (key ingredients) Huge disappointment, will not be back for 12 dollar romaine salad with tasteless chicken. Forget about the food; it simply doesn't matter when the service is so awful. The people are friendly and all, but they don't seem to have a process for taking orders, building, cooking, etc. I have been there twice now and both times the wait was over 20 minutes AFTER ordering. And, one of the guys at our table got his food immediately... The food is good, but not so good that it's worth the poor service frustration. This eclectic little spot in the Donelson neighborhood doesn't look like much from the outside (grass umbrellas and pallet fencing for the patio) but the sandwiches, sides and sweet tea are worth a stop. I had the 1 meat, 2 sides plate: pesto pasta, Chinese chicken, kale salad. Things that looked good I want to try: jerk chicken sandwich, generous club sandwich (with pimento cheese), and the special hummus varieties. A lot of thought and fresh stuff goes into the phood at Phats. Plus community wisdom is all over the bathroom walls. Get in. Get fed. Get an education. Looks like they have a large area for music, bands and open mike night. Plus a long bar on the other side of the deli. I gave Phat Bites a second chance today. Eh. The place isn't very clean (flies everywhere and piled up dishes behind the counter just sitting) and the food is mediocre at best. The staff is ok - a new guy today was nice, but other than that, the rest of the staff is not very attentive. And it's loud. I don't usually mind loud, except that it gets in the way of conversation. And because the inside is cinder block and highly reflective, there's no getting away from it. Basically, it's everything that's wrong with the hipster scene, without anything redeeming. The only drinks she offered me were in a case with water, naked juice and Gatorade. Not much of a selection. Phat Bites is an awesome and relaxing place to chill while enjoying great food and drinks. The food is so fresh and homemade. It seems like all the ingredients are made from scratch. It really is a gem in the Donelson area. It's probably the best place in the area to find a truly wholesome and delicious sandwich. I am pretty sure they also make their own bread which is amazing. In addition to their wonderful sandwiches they also have really great salads, wraps, breakfast soft tacos and pastas. One time a nice employee even let us sample some of their pastas to see which one we wanted to order. I adore their Pesto Pasta! They have a huge selection of tasty hummus flavors too. My favorite sandwiches are the "Big Jerk" made with juicy pork, Jack cheese and caramelized onions and the "Hot Affair" made with steak, bacon, cheddar, caramelized onions, Italian vinaigrette and Dijon mustard on homemade focaccia bread. Of their wraps I love "Charlotte's Wrap" made with pork, bacon, rice, lettuce, goat cheese and pico. I also love that they carry Bongo & Switters coffees. But if you aren't in the mood for coffee, try their hibiscus iced tea drink, it's so refreshing. In addition to their food section they also have a bar and sometimes have live music. The staff is always friendly and cool also. The only negative is they occasionally run out of some of their menu items. read more

Today was my first time trying Phat Bites. Unfortunately we went to the old location on Allen Rd that is now closed. I was under the impression that they just opened an ADDITIONAL location, not just moved locations. It wasn't a huge deal though since the new location was only a mile or so up the street. However, even with exact GPS guidance it's still hard to spot due to it's awkward location next to Ace Hardware and the fact that there's no sign other than some painting on the window. Upon entering I was a little afraid my 67 yr old Aunt was gonna look at me crazy for bringing her there. It's very eclectic, funky, rummage sale, dreadlock-ish inside. Luckily Aunt Suzie is the coolest person I know and she felt right at home. As other reviewers have stated, it is a little silly to have the menu board up high and behind where you order. And definitely some directional signs would be helpful. Aunt Suzie originally thought we were supposed to pay at the old-cash-register-turned-condiment -organizer. Bless her. As far as the food goes, what we had was good. I really liked my VIP sandwich and she said her Charlotte wrap was tasty as well. We didn't have to wait long at all for our food. Less than 5 minutes. The things that would make this a 5 star spot for me are the following: *get outdoor signage you can see from the street *get directional signage on the inside. "Order here" "pay here" * new (or at least in better condition) tables and chairs I get that mismatched stuff is cool and eclectic, but some of the tables and chairs just looked broke down. I'm pretty sad to be writing this review. I expected better for a place that boasts having been on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives! It has been a few years since it has been on the show, and I feel like the quality has clearly gone downhill. The look of the place was very Divey. Much like most of the places from the show I have been to eat at. We went while we were en route to the airport for our next flight thinking we would have some stellar food. We were looking over the menu already getting discouraged when we couldn't find the menu items that we had wanted to try based on the clip from the show. Ok, rotating menu items, but no, we should have taken that as a sign. The next thing that happened was a girl approached us from the counter to let us know they were having their grills replaced that day, and no hot food was available. This cut the menu down to about 10 items. We ended up getting Andy's Orbit salad and Hummus Envy to split. I decided that I was annoyed that they acted like it was an inconvenience to make a hot drink for my friend who wanted one of their signature coffees. I'm not really sure why we were asked if we were dining in or ordering takeout if the food was to be served in a plastic takeout box either way. The hummus might have been good by itself, but the amount of toppings in it really just eliminated the experience. There is a such thing as too much going on in one bite, and the bites were hard because their homemade pita chips were like rocks. I was seriously worried I was going to break my teeth on them. We asked for strictly kale/arugula mix without the lettuce, and they didn't serve that properly. Overall, it was pretty bland, and the dressing didn't do it much help. The saving grace here was their fresh fruit tea was pretty good, but not enough to earn them a better review. Rule of thumb. If you're remodeling the kitchen, and it will kill 90% of your menu just close for the day. read more

Pretty much everyone in my office had told me that this was one of the best places to get lunch near us and I finally found a friday to make the trip. We took a group of about 10 and although it was crowded we were able to get a table and enjoy a meal together. I ordered the Big Jerk Sandwich that was absolutely AMAZING. The Remoulade that came on the side was perfect for it and the meat was so good. For a side I got the Spicy Noodles but also tried a couple other peoples foods and I dont think anything wasn't good. This is probably the best sandwich place I have found in this part of the city and I can see myself heading back that way again soon. read more

Pretty cool little joint. We knew this highly acclaimed spot relocated to our neck of the woods not too long ago, and finally stopped by this weekend for lunch. Upon entering the warehouse/garage-reminiscent space, we waited in line for a bit. There was a "help wanted" sign on the door, so I wasn't too surprised that they appeared to be short-staffed. We finally had our order placed, and tried to figure out how to pay... We asked, and were sort of gruffly told to walk to the end of the line. We pay, sit at the cleanest table we could find, and waited... finally got our food, which was the highlight of the stop. My chicken salad was fresh and perfectly seasoned. Boyfriend had the Big Jerk -- a pork tenderloin situation on ciabatta -- which he raved about (albeit, it was a bit small). He also enjoyed the potato salad well enough. I have never used Yelp before, but after my 1st ( and last ) experience at Phat Bites, I felt like I would be doing society a horrible injustice by not reviewing this place. First off, the place is located in an old Chinese buffet in Donaldson directly adjacent to a hardware store. The interior of the "restaurant" looks like a cross between a Spencer's gifts blowout sale and a scene from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. The menu is on a chalkboard behind you. There are bread and cheese options, but it doesn't specify what they are. My GF and I ordered food ( I ordered a veggie wrap minus tofu, no cooking required, should be quick and easy), we were then told to go into a separate bar area to pay via tablet. No cash accepted? We sat down and waited for what seemed like an eternity, especially considering it was 5 o'clock on a week day and we were basically the only ones in the place. After 30 minutes had elapsed, my GF went to check on the progress of our meal, only to be told that they had forgot to make it. Given the circumstance, This is completely unacceptable. I'm only leaving two stars because the beer I had during our wait was quite good and the bartender that refunded our money was (seemingly) genuine in her apology to us.
