We stopped by for lunch earlier today and it just so happens to be HRW month. I've been before but my husband has not. The HRW menu was perfect for the both of us. We ended up splitting an HRW order and that was plenty for us. See photos of everything we got for $39.99. Dishes in the order it was served: 1) Roti Canai w/ Beef Rendang - I love this stuff and could be happy eating only this. The roti was warm and has a nice flaky texture when you tear it. The curry dipping sauce is their usual one but with beef rendang added to it. I was told this is only on the HRW menu. Flavor was good and similar to what I remember as beef rendang. The sauce is on the thicker side, similar to a gravy. That's different for me. I usually prefer it more runny. My husband loved it though. 2) Satay Skewers - Love that this was mix with both chicken and beef. Both were tasty in flavor. The meat had a good soft, chewy texture too. The peanut dipping sauce was delicious. 3) Chili Prawn - Good size prawns and a chili sauce that reminds me of Singaporean chili crab sauce. There were bits of eggs, onions, and chili in it. I'm a bit more sensitive to heat so definitely felt the kick from the chili. We got a good size portion along with a container of rice. This was when I was happy we only did one HRW order. Phat Eatery offers hefty meals that are full of flavor and substance. I came here and ordered the Roti Canai, Mee Gorang, and Hainanese Chicken for 2. The Roti was an amazing appetizer. Served with a warm and robust curry, this crisp Roti was a great way to start our meal. The Mee Gorang serving was huge. It came out very saucy and rich and at a couple bites in, I was loving it. Eventually though, the saltiness of the sauce-drenched noodles become a little overbearing and I found myself eating less of it. The star of the show was the Hainanese Chicken. The skin on the chicken was really savory and the 3 sauces that came with it complemented the strong fatty flavor of the chicken. It also came served with a giant pot of a super fragrant pandang rice that elevated the dish ever further. This chicken really does just melt in your mouth. The inside of the restaurant is sleek and clean, with beautiful utensils and comfortable seating. Service was quick and the atmosphere was inviting. He opened this Malaysian street food restaurant in the Asian Katy town area in Texas. This restaurant is where you will find award winning dishes of some popular Malaysian street food bites. Since we don't live in Houston anymore we always plan to venture out and find something new. This restaurant didn't disappoint us at all. We decided that we needed to order a few things off the menu and knew we would have leftovers. We chose to order roti canai which was Indian flat bread with a curry dipping sauce. If we didn't order anything else I would've just ordered three more just for myself. Next we got the Hainanese Chicken that came with a trio flight of sauces. The chicken was good but I didn't read the menu correctly as this dish is served at room temperature or cold and that threw me off. It's served with a side of rice that's cooked in the broth of the chicken. The rice was a nice touch fluffy and flavorful. Next we got the Award winning Beef Rendang that was packed with bold flavors. That with some roti was a delicious combo. Then the garlic green beans was chefs kiss I mean if I wasn't sharing I would have eaten them all for myself. They were made with just the right amount of garlic (again in my opinion) had the perfect crunch when you bit into it. So good !! Then came the CK Teow which was my son's choice and he loved it (he's a picky eater) so that says something. Then just in case if the noodles were not to his liking we also go the Basil fried rice (minus a few things) he also liked it. Everything was delicious and serving size was great if you are sharing. Based on the average glowing reviews, we were excited to try it out as us Singaporeans and Malaysians are always looking for good, authentic cooking from our home countries. Here's what we ordered: * Roti - The roti itself was nice, flaky and lightly crisp on the edges. Pretty authentic. However, the curry dipping sauce that came with it was a total disappointment... it had very little curry flavor and was just a starchy glue like consistency. * Satay - We got the combo with 3 sticks of chicken and 3 sticks of beef. I liked it. Good lemongrass flavor, decent satay peanut sauce. * Salt & Pepper Calamari -- It was a decent dish. Calamari had a medium batter, good crisp. Good flavor, but nothing authentically Malaysian about it. * Beef Rending -- Nice tender chunks of beef in a thick coconut curry sauce. Good, but not much better than the one I make at home with a good cut of beef and the Singaporean Prima Spice Mix from Ranch 99. * Chicken Curry -- Flavor wise this was good, but my Mom did not like it being boneless and much of the chicken falling apart more like a stew. * Hokkien Mee -- Thick udon like egg noodle in a dark soy sauce with chicken & seafood. It was decent, but not as authentic without the fried pork lard bits and hot wok char ("wok hei"). * Sizzling Tofu -- Soft tofu cubes deep fried with a light batter (like Japanese Agedashi Tofu) in a sauce with minced chicken & shrimp, served in a sizzling hot pan. Good choice. * Curry Laksa -- Yellow egg & rice noodles in a light coconut curry soup with shrimp, chicken, tofu, and bean sprouts. It was a good rendition, but my Mom was disappointed they didn't use the right fried tofu in the dish. * Curry Vegetable Casserole -- Mushroom, green beans, tofu & egg plant in a curry sauce. Ok. * Ikan Bakar -- Whole pomfret (fried? and) grilled in banana leaf with sambal (chili shrimp paste) sauce. Nice crisp edges, fresh fish, tasty sambal. Probably our favorite dish of the meal. Overall, I thought most of the dishes were good. If you haven't had authentic Malaysian or Singaporean cuisine, and don't mind paying some elevated prices, this would be a good preliminary introduction. Definitely pricey for the portion sizes. We went here for dinner on a Saturday night and were able to get a table within 10 minutes of arriving even though the restaurant was pretty packed. It's a pretty big space with lots of tables and a good amount of bar seating as well. Our waitress greeted us right away, took our drink and appetizer orders, and the food and drinks came out pretty quickly. We ordered the Malay Iced Milk Tea and the Pineapple Ginger to drink, Roti with Chicken Curry Dip to start, and the Malaysian Chicken Curry and Beef Rendang for entrees. The Malay Milk Tea was delicious - strong black tea flavor, creamy and sweet from the condensed milk. The Pineapple Ginger was light and refreshing. The Roti was light and flaky. The Chicken Curry Dip had a good amount of meat and good flavor. The texture was very smooth, but as the dish cooled, it turned a bit gummy. Not sure what made it have this texture, but I'm guessing it was supposed to be thick so it would cling to the roti. The Malaysian Chicken Curry entree didn't do this and the texture was a lot lighter than the dip. The Beef Rendang and the Green Beans were the standouts of the meal. The beef was so tender and the flavor was excellent. Green beans were fresh and crisp and were coated with a light garlic sauce. All the portion sizes were huge and we ended up taking a lot of leftovers home. They even gave me the rest of my Milk Tea to-go in a sealed cup, which I really appreciated. After reading up on the place, I learned that the chef was a semi-finalist for a James Beard Award in 2022. The restaurant is still super affordable and low-key/casual, which is nice because you get to enjoy really amazing Malaysian cuisine that is very authentic and accessible at a good price-point. This was our first stop on our Katy Asia Town food crawl. The restaurant was quite full for a weekday lunch. We decided on SIZZLING TOFU w SHRIMP AND CHICKEN, ROTI CANAI, and KERABU PRAWN to share. For our drive back to San Antonio, Katy was a stopping point for lunch so we thought to try Hubby had seen this restaurant and chef featured by Tanji Patton. We realized after coming home that during our first visit, they were closed for the celebration of life of Chef Alex Au-Yeung, who passed away recently from a battle with cancer. Took my dad here for his birthday, and we splurged. I absolutely loved it. I got the passion dragon and it was SO GOOD. It was heavy on the maca root but it was incredible. My dad got their coconut espresso martini... and then got two more. It was "incredible" by his definition. The star of the show: roti canai. We got three orders and one to go just because we loved it. the one downfall: (I can't find it on the menu) but it was rice with meat in it, cold. Neither of us were a fan. The beef was tender and seasoned well. The roti came out warm and fluffy. I'd you've never had roti. I'd compare it to a lighter version of a croissant, but better! Updating my previous review to say that they have a vegetarian menu! However, the menu is a little confusing and would benefit from an update. Some of the dishes on the menu have a "V" labeled next to them. We had to ask our waiter what that meant. He said "V" on the menu means the dish vegetarian and is NOT vegan. We saw that these dishes mostly contain eggs. However, there were dishes on the menu that didn't have a "V" that also contained egg? Additionally there were a few dishes on the main menu that fit the vegetarian category and weren't on this separate vegetarian menu. I ordered the curry vegetable casserole from the menu. It was tasty curry with different vegetables mixed in, but portion size felt small for the price of $18. There were only one or two pieces of tofu so it wasn't that filling. The award winning kerabu prawns were delicious, as you can see we've done ate 1/3 of it before I could snap a photo. We also had the roti curry w/ chicken dip, amazing. Wife ordered the pineapple fried rice and my brother had a beef dish which I can't remember but it was tender and flavorful. We will definitely be coming back, will take a lot more photos next time. Very delicious and well balanced 10/10 The winner dish for me at this restaurant is the Ikan Bakar Golden Pomfret - soft and delicious fish! Serves 5-7 people easily 10/10 We ordered the Mee Goreng noodles that were spicy with some nuts on top and had chicken and veggies loved it 10/10 The chili prawn was okay for me I've had better but still tasted good! 8/10 I didn't like the Malaysian chicken curry although my husband loved it!
