I always carry my 2014 Accord and 2019 Pilot back to Phil Hughes Honda for service, oil change and checkups regularly with hopes of keeping my cars running great for years. They are great providing a loaner car to drive if ever needed. Matt Joiner is the service advisor that I always make appointments with. He is always very kind, caring and knowledgeable about car needs. I am a widow and he explains the findings so well. All the staff that I encounter are very nice and helpful. I had vowed I was not going to have another car payment however my vision came to an abrupt halt a two weeks ago. My old vehicle needed a new torque converter and the cost outweighed the value of the vehicle. My best friend suggested Phil Hughes because they had a great experience. Reluctantly I went online and began looking. After looking at financing options Eder reached out to me. I explained my situation and he went to work immediately and began helping me. Called me several times, sent videos of the vehicle I was interested in and even had a second vehicle that would work in the event I changed my mind. Can I just say I have never had a more pleasant buying experience. I have never gotten in and out of a dealership when buying a car in under 4 hours....BUT Eder had everything handled and from the time I got there til I walked out the door with Keys in hand it was 2 1/2 hours. Dear Mr. Wilcher, I am writing to let make you aware how well Chad Pilgrim represented Phil Hughes Honda and in the process, made me one very happy customer. As I explained to Chad, I bought my very first car, a 1980 Honda Accord (used) from Phil Hughes Honda back in the early '80s. I drove that car for over 220,000 miles until I graduated UGA, got my first 'real' job in Atlanta but came back to Phil Hughes Honda to buy my first brand new car, a 1986 Honda Accord. Now, my oldest daughter is a student and her 2008 Honda Accord (the family's 5th Accord) was sounding pretty rough. We took it to our usual repair shop here in Atlanta and they said it probably needed a new engine. Not a good option. Stealership as is normal in all of the car sale industry. You have all the great sales people but the second you meet the finance guy that all falls apart. Phil Hughes Honda had the opportunity to get all my family's future Honda business but instead all they did was take advantage of a misinformed customer by pushing an over priced worthless extended warranty on them. This company has confirmed to me that their industry needs to die a painful but needed death. It's not the free market when laws keep you in business and keep the customer away from the supplier. I look forward to the day deregulation kills the model of these stealerships and allows direct purchases from the manufacturer. In the future I will NEVER bring one of my family members here to Phil Hughes again. Congrats on this being your one and only sale I bring to you. WORST CAR BUYING EXPERIENCE EVER!!! As a former car saleswoman I am pretty familiar with how this process works and gave this dealership multiple chances to make good on this deal. Around March 15th, 2023 purchased a 2016 Chevy Tahoe, which will probably be back up on their website soon, just in time for spring break travels so we thought. Just shy of a week after purchase we returned the vehicle due to what we later found out to be transmission issues. They utilized the warranty they provided with purchase to pay for the transmission but tried to tell our family we have to pay for fluids and a deductible. As if this was a courtesy to us. As we anticipated fitting our family in our brand new tahoe we were first put in a honda accord to travel in. But that was after the service manager threaten to have my husband arrested if we drove their vehicle out of state. Since their service department inspected the vehicle multiple times and could not determine the issue, it was sent to a chevy dealer. This confirmed the bad transmission. We requested Chevy complete the transmission replacement as their service department could not even find the issue, but they refused that as well. My husband and I were patient and apprehensive at the sametime but we were reassured that the service department was well trained and equipped to handle a chevrolet vehicle. They then placed us in a Honda Passport to "accommodate us"!! Still just patiently waiting to enjoy the vehicle I purchased and searched for quite some time. When we finally took possession again on April 13th, 2023- the very next day while driving on the highway, the vehicle began spewing out fluids and shaking almost uncontrollably. This was the last straw for my family. I contacted the ASM Armando, and explained that we wanted to roll this deal back, I was told a contract was a contract and he would call me right back. Days later I received an email from a finance manager requesting payoff etc etc....Fast forward to yesterday when I spoke with Armando regarding signing the final paper work to return this vehicle back, he assured me that I would be able to also retrieve my funds given to them as down pymt as long as I arrived to the dealership before 4pm. Another lie and deceptive phone call, as he was only concerned about getting the loaner vehicle back as if I would risk my life, freedom, etc. over a honda passport. When I was in route to the dealership this morning and gave a courtesy call that I was 45 minutes away, he then wanted to "let me know the process" that they would be mailing my funds because they have to wait for the transaction to clear. I've never felt so violated and betrayed by a company. And everytime I requested to speak with the GM, he wasn't available or it was no use because he would just tell Armondo to handle it. My family was inconvenienced as we have had to make multiple trips to Athens ,as we are residents of Covington, Ga. My family was threatened with insinuations of calling law enforcement on two different occasions as if we had done something to question their trust in us when it was the other way around. My family is back at the drawing board looking for another vehicle, yet needing a breather after this horrific experience. Sales people seemed to be great and service advisor Joanna wasn't bad either, I know she was just doing what she was told from the top. But the leaders are deceptive. read more

My wife and I bought a new car from Phil Hughes Honda last week. Over the course of the five hour process, the drive out price was increased twice and the finance rate increased a full point above what we had agreed on. Fortunately we were watching closely throughout the process and we noticed each incident and brought it their attention. One price increase occurred with our salesman. The second price increase and the finance rate increase occurred in the finance office. Each "error" was corrected when we pointed them out. Ultimately we bought the car we wanted for the price we agreed on but we left the dealership that night with a sick feeling in our stomachs. Had we not watched the numbers closely, we would have paid more for the car and paid a higher finance rate than we agreed to in the deal. read more

I scheduled an appointment online, rolled up to the service center as scheduled, and they took my car and had the problem fixed. Oh, and they fixed it for free too! Granted, it was just a minor issue (my windshield wiper fluid reservoir/wire was leaking/sliced; no idea how that happened, and the mechanic didn't know either). But they, nonetheless, fixed it for free after about an hour of waiting in the lobby. Note: I didn't even purchase my Honda here. Sure, my car is only a few years old, but the warranty on it had *just* ended a few months ago. I was surprised they didn't bother charging anything for it; I expected a small bill, not completely free of charge. The lobby isn't as nice and fleshed out as, say, the larger Honda dealerships (e.g., Gwinnett Place Honda, Honda Mall of Georgia). It's got refreshments and some snacks, as well as a few seats. But it's pretty bare. I didn't mind. But besides that, I can only say positive things about the folks working there. Excellent customer service, actual servicing of the car, and honesty about the cost. They could most definitely have chosen to charge me for the (minor) fix, but they didn't. Where do they find these people, my favorite, and by that I mean the one that makes me want to throw my radio out the window, is Ellen. She reads the script like a 1st grader sight reading for the first time. I can not imagine who they think this commercial appeals to, perhaps there are more illiterate folks out there than I thought. Terrible experience at the dealership. Came in to make a simple transaction. We had done our research on the value of the trade in and also the TrueValue of the car we were buying. The sales person (Ty) was pleasant to deal with but then came the Manager looking to rip us off. He claimed the trade in car needed tires and also that a simple part recall on the Jeep Wrangler would mean it would take weeks to sell. We explained that Jeep had the part for the recall and that we only just had the tires rotated and got no feedback that there was an issue. Anyway, Jeep put the new part on today and provided confirmation tires are good. Shameful that you can't rely on getting an honest deal but this is why car dealerships get this type of wrap. Obviously there are other Honda dealerships so it's just an unnecessary delay and they lose a sale. read more

Here's a positive review for a sale that never took place! My wife and I were "just looking" for a late-model, low mileage, hybrid sedan. I entered the information in an on-line form, and Will Stephens from Phil Hughes Honda emailed me with a possibility. It sounded good, so I called and made an appointment to come and take a look. Meanwhile I took advantage of his offer to provide information on our car for a "sight unseen" trade appraisal of our own car. I did so and received a fair price pretty much corresponding to the Kelly Blue Book estimate. We showed up to look at the car and take a test drive. Will quoted us a price which I thought was quite fair. He also quoted a trade-in price almost $1000 higher than the previous sight unseen price, explaining that our car was in much better condition than the usual. Hughes' car was nice, but it had a little more mileage than we wanted and just didn't exactly match everything we were looking for. We left the dealership with the understanding we were going to continue to look around. Since then Will did keep us updated with a few occasional emails about cars in which he thought we might be interested, but I never had the feeling of being "bugged" with useless hard sale tactics. And we did in fact find a car elsewhere that was the perfect match to everything we were looking for. Bottom line: I wish Hughes had had our "perfect" car in stock because I liked the manner with which Will and the dealership conducted business. I certainly appreciate the time spent with us with no subsequent return, and it'll certainly be the first place we look next time. In any event they have my 5-star rating! read more

The guy in parts needs to be fired. I come to purchase parts as a BUSINESS that has a Honda Account, but I was told "I'm just a guy off the streets" and they can not sell me the parts at the usually commercial price. The guy didn't look up our 28 year old company, didn't ask for the phone number, or address. I guess a black man can not be a business owner, just "a guy off the streets." I don't have this problem with Volkswagen dealership, BMW dealership, or Ford dealership. The only thing I recommend a black company to do is call for part numbers and PURCHASE your parts somewhere else. read more

I like to write reviews after continuing experience, knowing that any place can have a bad day--or have one individual who makes such a positive impression that it may color my experience. Having now utilized the services of the SERVICE DEPARTMENT at Phil Hughes numerous times, and having been assisted by no less than five different service managers I can say with confidence that their service has been professional, efficient, honest and effective, indeed exemplary. I am grateful to them for having solved problems on more than one occasion for little or no charge when other places have charged much more under similar circumstances. They have communicated well with me and I have NOT found that they padded charges in any way, even when the door was left open for them to do so, and all of their repairs have "stuck". I've never had to go back to have work redone. On more than one occasion they have gone out of their way to save me money. In contrast to another reviewer, I find that their prices are NOT consistently higher than independent mechanics in the area. Indeed, I have specifically compared their labor rates to more than one independent with a well established reputation and found them comparable. I'm sure there are cheaper places around for one specific job or another, and maybe some places consistently cheaper but in this case I feel confident that I HAVE GOTTEN WHAT I PAID FOR, and maybe a little bit more on several occasions. I have purchased a new and a used Honda from Phil Hughes Honda, and compared to dealerships in the metro Atlanta area, this one has more straightforward pricing. The service department will keep your Honda on the road, too, and they do not require appointments for basic services, which is very convenient. And, they do have the nicest Ladies room at any dealership in Athens. However, a basic oil change is running about $45 as of this review: hubby doesn't pay that much over at the Toyota dealer. And the Chevy dealer who services my son's truck charges about half that for an oil change and basic inspection. During my almost ten years as a customer, I have noted that there is sometimes a lack of common sense in the service department, too. Here is an example: I had new tires installed one week prior to having one of my Hondas serviced; when I went over the bill, the technician had noted the new condition of the tires, but I was charged for a tire rotation. Those new tires didn't need rotating, even if that is standard for the accumulated mileage. A phone call would have saved me that $16. Indeed, I have found that independent shops charge less for most services; whether I save seventy five dollars on struts or a hundred on a couple of motor mounts, over the life of a Honda, there are thousands of dollars to be saved by steering clear of the service department at Phil Hughes Honda. I advised friends to purchase a Honda from Phil Hughes, and use the service department if convenience is more important than frugality. The best plan is to get a good, independent mechanic to service your Honda, especially as it ages. read more

I know there's another favorable review from earlier about Chuck E, but that was nearly 3 years ago. We went to purchase a used car that we saw on their lot yesterday, and at first the showing of it and test drive were very pleasant. Chuck took us on a nice circuit around the block that allowed me to certify the integrity of the intended purchase. He was fairly informative and was able to answer all questions that I had about the car. Unfortunately when it came to the negotiations, we saw the uglier side of him. When we gave our first offer, he flat out laughed at us (unprofessional). After the second offer, he gave us a simple statement that suggested that we were still too low. Fine, that's normal, but as I considered raising my offer, he made a display of looking at this watch twice and looked impatient while I went over the numbers. This was only 20 minutes into the negotiations! At that point I was fed up and just decided to take my business elsewhere. read more

I had a terrible experience with the dealership. I left feeling swindled. I was sold on a supplemental insurance through the dealership. One of the major points that sold me was that minor body damage could be prevented from being reported to my primary insurance. I had a small (1-2") dent, the policy covered dents up to 4". I went in to ask about having repaired and was met with surliness. They said they'd have to call their body guy and set it up for a day that was sunny. Nobody ever followed up with me. The vehicle also had one of the defective airbags that was recalled shortly after I purchased it. It took over a year for the part to come in to replace it. Nobody at the dealership ever made any effort to compensate for the fact that I now could not have a passenger in my 18k vehicle. I had had such a bad experience at this point I couldn't wait to sell the vehicle, but with the recalled part the most I was offered (less than a year after purchase) was 8k. Another reason the offer was so low was that the dealership had reported that 1-2" dent (that they never fixed) as "body damage" to carfax. After selling the vehicle I have continued to be spammed by the dealership for almost a year now, despite multiple requests to be removed from communication. AVOID THIS DEALERSHIP! read more

I do not recommend calling for any information. I was inquiring about a simple service, just trying to gather information about the it. The first phone call I was hung up on, and the second call I was transfered to about 6 different people, none of which had any useful information. In the end, I just said "Thank you" and hung up the phone. I still have no idea how much it will cost to have my window put back on its track. Perhaps in person the service is better, but I cannot say. read more

First and foremost, the service guys got my car running, so I am happy there. The staff seemed genuine and professional which is a huge plus these days! But, the problem that made me deliver the 3 star rating goes as follows. I had my Accord towed to them, and they started there work after a lengthily explanation from me. I am happy to say Bob listened to my entire spell with out interrupting and was receptive and repeated everything back, but that also made me unhappy because they ended up not doing what I told them I would like done. I took the car to the dealer because I was told by a local shop that I needed a new ECU and the dealer was the only place that could do that. I was prepared with a "new", from a junk yard, ECU bolted down in the car and ready to flash. I instructed them that they only had my permission to flash the "new" ECU to the car to see if that was the problem, and if it happened to be something else, then I would like the "old" ECU to be placed back in the car, so I did NOT have to pay for programming the "new" ECU for $49.50+ tax. I also wanted to be notified what, if any, other problems were in relation to the car not starting. They said OK and went to work on the car. Within an hour, they called me to say that they could not get there computer to communicate with my ECU and asked if I could bring in the old one to see if maybe the "new" junkyard ECU was defective, which I did the next day. They found the miss-communication problem to be a loose ground wire on the throttle body shortly after I dropped off the "old" ECU to them. This effectually grounded all the electrical from working except lights and such, but did not give me spark to the motor because the ECU couldn't tell the engine to give spark. So the problem wasn't the ECU at all, but they went ahead and flashed the new ECU over to my car once the ground bolt was tightened and they restored communications with the "new" ECU, so now my "old" ECU is a spare, and they charged me the $49.50. Ultimately, I just paid the $204 and got my car and got out. I was tired of dealing with it and I guess if I want my money back all I have to do is sell the old ECU, but that doesn't defeat the purpose of doing something without my permission and then charging me for it. I wasn't happy about that, but this experience is not something that will keep from me from returning. If I do have to go back, I will be extremely descriptive about what I want done. And, in advance, notify them of my unwillingness to pay them for anything done outside of my instructions. Hope this helps. read more
