One of the highest-rated Sioux Falls restaurants on Trip Advisor, and we can see why. This was a local place with local people, situated right in downtown. We had a couple of great burgers, mine with guacamole and my wife's with bacon and egg. The fries were seasoned. Our waiter was a bit scattered, but he was very courteous. This is great place for all ages and taste buds. The menu is huge so it is sure to please everyone. The service is quick, no one has to wait alone time to eat. Great for breakfast, lunch or dinner. My Belgian waffle was good, but my husband's and our son's chicken strips were not great. I will try it again to make sure that this visit wasn't just a one-off. In town only for tonight and I found this diner from an internet search. I took a total of nine people, and the staff welcomed us warmly and seated us quickly. The service was stellar and the food was fantastic! Six teenaged athletes walked out saying, "I'm full." There's no better compliment than that. :-) read more

I hadn't been to Sioux Falls for nearly 25 years, but my mom knows the area quite well. She suggested this diner and it was well worth the detour from the highway. Honestly, I was surprised by the poutine. It was nearly perfect. Great sauce, white cheese curds, fries that withstood the sauce. Walked around downtown Sioux Falls, SD and went to a few bars for cocktails after a day of travel. After building up an appetite, I decided to find a classic diner and that's when I came across Philips Avenue Diner. Great atmosphere offering that old school American diner feel. I was in the mood for sweet potato fries so I ordered the southwest chicken wrap with sweet potato fries, side of ranch/chipotle ranch. My server was super friendly & very accommodating to my requests. I stuck with just an ice cold water to hydrate. The wrap was just alright, slightly dry but the tortilla was fresh, moist, and soft. The sweet potato fries were about 6.5/10 because they were slightly undercooked/soft. They would have been easily a 8/10 if they were a lil more crunchy. After the wrap & fries my sweet tooth was activated by everyone ordering milkshakes, I opted for the strawberry cheesecake to go. Can't complain on anything with the cheesecake, it was spectacular! I have already reviewed Phillips Avenue Diner but I have to provide this update. On Saturday it was my daughter's birthday, so my wife was calling around to find a place that would sing Happy Birthday. She called them and the person on the phone said that "technically it's against policy, but I'd sing to her anyways", so we went there. We learned that lunchtime on Saturdays is a busy time. It took us a while to get seated, but it was worth the wait. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive and the food was excellent, as always. The best part of the meal, though, was when we asked our waitress about singing to our daughter. She returned with a big ice cream sundae and three other staff members who sang a very nice rendition of Happy Birthday to our 3 year old. They always have great service and great food. And adding on top of it their willingness to go the extra mile for their customers guarantees that we will be repeat customers. read more

When I think of diner food, I usually think nasty, greasy, and yet wonderfully delicious. The Phillip's Avenue Diner, or just "Diner" as my wife and I have come to call it, more than just a cut above the usual. It's an old school style diner in the heart of downtown Sioux Falls. You might think that by putting that diner type of atmosphere in a downtown setting, you lose something in the process. But the food here is just so good, that it doesn't matter. "Diner" is diner food at it's absolute best. As a vegetarian, the menu is extremely limiting, but that is only to be expected. For those who don't limit themselves to the non-meat options, the menu is pretty extensive for a diner. My standard is the absolutely fantastic gardenburger with fries and a vanilla malt. I have no idea how they do it, but their gardenburger is so much better than any other I've had. They just do absolutely everything well. Everyone we've gone with has come away more than satisfied with their meal. Service has always been top notch and the prices are relatively reasonable. Everyone who works there seems to genuinely enjoy being there, which is another reason why I like it so much. Going to a diner is supposed to be more of a "fun" dining experience, so having a staff that is pleasant can make a big difference. One other thing I should mention is that it is quite popular and seating is somewhat limited (particularly in the winter). If you go during a typical meal time, you may have a short wait. We've never had to wait longer than ten minutes or so for a table, so it's never been an issue for us. Also, because of the limited, diner style booth seating, they can't really accommodate larger groups unless you are willing to be split up. Phillips Avenue Diner is easily my favorite place to eat in Sioux Falls so far, and so is highly recommended. I can't imagine anyone having a disappointing experience there. read more

We came here because Yelp said they had free wi-fi and we needed to eat something. The menu was pretty limited for us but we figured we'd just sit and have appetizers and coffee for an hour or two. We arrived and were seated in the coldest table of all time. The restaurant is like a walk-in freezer. We ask a waitress to turn it down and she said she had no control over it. Fine, whatever. We order and then ask for the wi-fi password. Nobody knows it. Great. A family walks in with about a dozen people and our waitress forgets we exist. By the time we got our food, it was cold, and the air conditioner made sure we couldn't even enjoy it lukewarm. We never get a drink refill, and before we even finish our meals the waitress drops our check. Guess we aren't welcome to hang out. We ended up finding a more hospitable public bench to get some work done. read more

So it was 2:23 and we were at Sioux Falls arts and crafts event. Our Gut Worm was getting rowdy so we went to try Phillips Avenue Dinner. We had a 20 min wait that was fine considering the event was a block away. Everyone was running around busy as can be because it was packed even there patio was full. We got a booth and ordered I had the zesty burger classic burger with bacon and sliced jalapeños on top with fried spice pickles slices. My mom had the meatloaf and my husband had the chicken sandwich all great. I loved my burger jalapeño were not that hot but tasted good. I had a ice tea with a mango flavored great Well with being busy are food was served in good timing and tasted great. If you haven't had a chance to visit the dinner your missing out on a great place. Oh and to all of the employees at Phillips Avenue Dinner Great Job guys food was great service was excellent. Loved, loved, loved this place. We stopped here for brunch on our way through town. I had eggs benedict and it was AWESOME. The eggs were perfectly cooked, and the hollandaise sauce was rich and creamy with a proper lemony zing. It came with crispy hash browns. My companion had the buffalo shrimp po-boy. He reports that it was awesome. The shrimp were not overcooked and the buffalo sauce was tasty. The service was excellent. I never saw the bottom of my coffee cup, and the waitress was warm and pleasant. All in all, two thumbs up. read more

My wife and I have spent most of our lives on the Pacific Coast, so one might say we have "left coast values".. certainly we care greatly about the big 3 Es: Equality, Environment, and Education, along with the freedom of religion, the right to know what goes into our food, etc. So the uninformed observer might be excused if they are surprised that one of our all-time favorite restaurants is a diner right in the heart of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In many ways this small city represents what we love about America - a thriving downtown, a natural area for which the town is named (really, on a nice night, there are few more enjoyable activities than wandering around these falls - and it seems plenty of people share that opinion, but not so plenty that one can't enjoy themselves), chain hotels and restaurants near I-29 for those who don't want to venture into town, minor league teams in both baseball and hockey, and their own college, Augustana. Perhaps my view of this town would be a little less rose-colored if I were to visit in say January, but so what. As for this restaurant, on our 2014 road trip we actually ate here twice, we were that impressed. So I was happy when planning our 2015 sojourn that Sioux Falls lay at the intersection of our paths, the only city that can lay that claim. And I'm happy to say that our faith was well-rewarded, and our decision to not have lunch that day wise. I found the Jalapeno Burger worthy of my anticipation, nice and juicy (and with a not insignificant kick), with the accompanying Oatmeal Stout being the exact right thing to wash it down. And the proverbial cherry-on-top was the Strawberry Cheesecake Shake. Phillips' markets itself as a classic diner, and more than lives up to it. I often mock people who think everything in the old days was good, but this is an example of something that actually was - no pretension, just quality comfort food. read more

Had the breakfast poutine and it did not disappoint. It was a lot of food for one person to eat. The flavored complimented each other extremely well. If you are a fan of breakfast and cheese this is a dish for you. The gravy played well with both types of potatoes. The cheese curds melted partially and some completely. The diner has become one of our regular, and favorite, spots. Everything on the menu is at least good, if not excellent. They have a solid regular menu and a seasonal menu that feature your standard diner food with a twist. The restaurant is on the smaller side, so sometimes, especially on Sundays, you have to wait, but it is well worth it. First time trying this place a couple weeks ago. We grabbed eggs, hash browns etc. and the other order was tomato bisque and added Texas toast. Tomato Bisque was outstanding. The eggs and hash brown was average, but still tasty. Great customer service and nice atmosphere. I will try again. read more
