Third time's a charm! After two disappointing visits to other locations, I finally got lucky. The spare ribs I had today were nothing short of spectacular. Period. And my rating only applies to the ribs I just ate. I'm not taking into account my visits to the other locations, or the mixed sauce and potato salad I also ordered today. But just for the hell of it, here are my thoughts on those two items. On my first visit, I ordered the hot sauce, but now it's clear that they must have given me the mild sauce. Second time around, I did indeed get the hot sauce. Now, I've finally tasted the mixed sauce. Like so many others have said, it does have the "kick I was looking for." People say the mixed sauce is "mild sauce spiked with hot sauce," but it seems more like "hot sauce tempered with mild sauce." Anyhow, it's ketchup-based and doesn't have the richness of Bludso's sauce, for example. The flavor is hollow...underdeveloped. Still, it's enjoyable enough for a dip or two. Like the other sides, the potato salad was not very good. It's some kind of waxy potato with mayonnaise and relish. Maybe it's undercooked starchy potato. Who knows? At least it wasn't the yellow stuff out of a plastic tub. I'm pleased that my Phillips Barbecue Quest ended on a high note. Over and over Phillips BBQ never disappoints! It is the best BBQ in Los Angeles! I have used them for catering, or just a simple meal takeout. You can't sit there and eat. so prepare to take out your meals. The barbecue sauce is fantastic (gluten free if you care). The mild is a little too mild for me and the spicy is a little too spicy to take away from the magic of the barbecue flavor. So I recommend getting a mixed sauce which is half spicy half mild mixed together. My boyfriend always get the shredded pork sandwich which is a steal at only $4.20. I always get the soul special, which is a deal in itself at $16. You get your choice of meats and can easily share with someone. You get two choices of Premium sides and I highly recommend the greens. The sweet potatoes are a little too sweet but still nice and cinnamon-ie and wonderful. It also comes with a corn on the cob and a it also comes with a corn on the cob and a cornbread muffin which I always give it to the boyfriend! This is a down-home smoke the meat all night long kind of place that you must try! It's a hole-in-the-wall in a stripmall. So they don't fuss with anything but making the food the BEST! read more

This has got to be the worst food I've ever purchased. LA is not known for their bbq so just stick with the rule or thumb I followed until now, don't eat bbq in LA. Who would pay someone and then have to make their own sandwich? I just did. What type of business establishment would sell a bbq sandwich on plain white bread, the kind they sale for .99 a loaf... this place is a waste of money. This is the poorest quality of food over ever bought at an establishment, be it a restaurant, food truck, etc. Mac n' cheese tastes stove top, Cole slaw is a weird green unnatural color (to be honest, I didn't even taste it), and I still can't get over this "sandwich". I had the beef slices sandwich with a potato salad on the side. The potato salad cup was good. Not watery and just the right amount of vinegar and mustard so it was not too tangy. The beef brisket was not very soft. It was actually tough which was surprising. Also maybe I misunderstood how authentic BBQ sandwiches are but I received two white slices of bread on the side and the BBQ in a tray with foil. See pic. Mild sauce is actually pretty spicy and I can normally eat spicy foods with no problem but the BBQ sauce flavor was a bit much that it took away from the overcooked beef. They give you a good portion of beef slices enough for two sandwiches though. If I come back maybe I will try something else. Make a note they do not provide wet naps. I initially only came here to purchase the Praline sweet potato cake from Lizzie Roux. I decided to order dinner. The Soul Special with ribs, mac & cheese and greens. It came with corn on the cob and cornbread. I requested sauce on the side. Everything I tried was mediocre at best. The "tender" ribs were flavorless and everything else I had to take home and add my own seasonings to finish the meal. One pro, customer service. I'm pretty sure I won't be returning. read more

This was once my favorite place to get BBQ but yesterday I ordered a small ends dinner and it was horrible! The meat was tough and dry with BBQ sauce on it. I also noticed the staff was all Hispanic here, which I found unusual for a BBQ restaurant. Has this location been contracted out? I know the leimert park location is closed. Yes I am aware of the Crenshaw location. But the one on Centinela was closer. I m just saying the quality of food there was terrible! I had a upset stomach after eating there. Never again will I eat there again! I also don't have a problem with the staff that happen to be there on Friday 3/29/19. Avoid on holidays as it will be filled with people placing massive orders. Good luck getting through to place a phone order. Sides are small anything to write home about. The food here is yummy. I like this location better than the one on Crenshaw. The first time I came here was on the fourth of July. That was pure madness. However ,the food was worth the wait. They haven't disappointed me yet. I like the fact that you can choose the sauce you want. I prefer to have mine mixed. Super tasty! I have had the beef ribs everytime. I will try chicken next time. The sides are good as well. I like the potato and macaroni salad. The beef rib dinner combo comes with two sides. The price was about $14.45. Not too bad at all. Well worth it. Phillips BBQ. This stuff is bomb. REALLY bomb. Bombizzle. First off, better have plans on where to go to eat, because there aren't any tables in this joint. A window for ordering, and a bench for waiting... that's it. But forget ambiance, I'm here for the bbq. And bingo, found it. I went for a combo plate ($17), with beef ribs and pork spare ribs. Hot bbq sauce (keep your mild). Sides of beans and cornbread. Pecan pie for dessert (they were out of banana pudding). The ribs were pretty unreal. The beef ribs were meaty, and pulled right off the bone... not falling off the bone, but pulled correctly. Nicely smoked, with a flavorful rub. The first spare rib that I had was one of the best I've ever had... but the second one was gristle and hardly any meat. A little disappointing on that front. The beans were whatever... not overly flavorful. Put some ham in them to flavor 'em up. The cornbread was meh, not great, wouldn't order it again, too dry. But screw all of that, because I was here for the meat. And for the most part it delivered. The pecan pie was okay, but too sweet and buttery, without much pecan taste... but apparently Phillips doesn't make it, so I blame whomever did. And the hot sauce? Oh man, it was awesome. I was licking my fingers from start to finish, and then for a little while afterwards. I even dipped the bread into it (comes with the meal, some cheap white bread) to make sure I had gotten every last drop. Loved it. My gf got the beef ribs and the babybacks (same combo as mine), but she went for a mix of the hot and regular sauces. The regular sauce was very standard, so her meal already was spiraling down the road of disappointment... and this was only compounded by the babybacks. They were VERY mediocre. Not enough meat, and very little flavor. Unimpressive. Oh, and for the recession buster, give the pulled pork sando ($3.50) a try... and then let me know how it is, because I didn't try it ;P All in all, I'm going 4 stars. I'll try another Phillips location since I've heard they're better... but in my book Bludso's is still the best bbq in LA. read more

This place has horrible customer service and Ok tasting food. I went there for the first time today and was greeted by a rude cashier. At first I wanted an all beef combo and for some reason she wouldn't let me get it. I wasn't understanding why and she said " look you get something from here & here" ( pointing at the menu) All they had was beef, pork and chicken at the bottom and top of the menu. For whatever reason she felt like being a distasteful human being is an unknown factor for me. I ended up ordering one beef and one pork combo. Then she told me that they ran out of yams. The unrefined cashier tried to get me to order another side dish. I sternly told her no and made sure that look on my face matched the attitude that was in my voice . The lady had an understanding that I didn't like her. Then her demeanor got even worse towards me because, I asked for a receipt! On top of that,her temperament changed even more because, I had the audacity to ask her the eta on the food! If I wasn't hungry or tired I would have walked out. If you don't like your job then quit. Having piss poor customer service skills is one way you can definitely not make money. I would strongly advise that you do not come here. Go somewhere else that doesn't have a lack of communications skills and manners. read more

This is by far some of the best BBQ in Los Angeles!! Don't believe the hype with all these people saying they've had better. Taste buds are different and nobody cares who or what you did in the south! Nobody gives a f*#k! YOU ARE NOT in the south, YOU ARE IN LOS ANGELES! The rib-tips are some of the best I've had anywhere (Memphis, Tex, KC & Louisiana) and the sauce is top notch too. There's usually a short line inside and I hear people ordering all kinds of special additions and subtractions to their order. It's BBQ joint... get BBQ when you go to a BBQ joint. I can see why people get disappointed if you go to a place like this, ask for a bunch of food with no sauce, put it in your car, then drive back to Bell Gardens/North Hollywood/ Riverside/Wherever (while stopping at the market none the less) and expecting the food to taste fine 2 hours later when you get it to the dinner table. Who does that? This is my go to spot in all of Los Angeles for good BBQ and I've tried them all. Aside from a few in Compton and Long Beach. But give this place a shot, you won't regret it. Ok, a disclosure first: I'm from Tennessee and went to college in Texas. I know good pork and beef barbq, so I'm picky. For Los Angeles, this barbq is quite good but not like the flavors of the barbq in my prior home states. The service was friendly, and the sauce was the perfect combination of sweet and tangy. My problem with the meat itself ... and I only had pork ribs, mind you ...was that it just did not have much smoked taste. The sauce overwhelmed it, and I was looking for a bit more evidence that the ribs were smoked and not baked. I honestly think I could have made the same ribs in the oven. I have heard a lot rave reviews of this place, mainly the other 1 of 3 on Crenshaw. This one feels a bit like one of those check cashing joints with a walk up window inside the place and now where to sit and eat. This is strictly to go...or eat in the car and get sauce everywhere like I did. While waiting for my order another customer was telling me that he had been Phillips for years and that it was the best BBQ in LA and he was from Texas. I hope this is not the case. While I found it to be good, I didn't think it was all that great and certainly not the the best I ever had. The sauce is not a sweet sauce but one that is smoky and spicy. I had the mix of mild and hot. The brisket was tender and had a deep smoky flavor, but I didn't think the baby backs were all that great...I'd give them a 3-stars. The beans was great and some of the best I had. Final word: I am not sure if this a place I'll be craving a few weeks down the road or place I'll return to. There has got to be better BBQ in LA. Note: This review is based on catered trays that were on warmers for about 2 hrs before enjoying. That being said, I gotta drive up to Los Angeles and try it right off the smoke pits! The flavors were all robust with hints of wood and the barbeque sauce was tangy but not too sweet. I tried: - Brisket (This was the best for me; very moist, tender, and full of flavor) - Beef Ribs (Was decent, but not the best. And if you are on a budget they have a really good and big pulled pork sandwich that is great, I suggest you eat it right away because the bun gets soggy Ew. I guess the downside about places that have been open since you were a kid is the fact you continue to find better places and/or the quality of the place you've been going to has deteriorated in quality. I ordered a pork rib dinner which should feed two people. The size of the sides they give you are enough for two to have about three bites. The meat didn't have a SMOKED taste to it and the mixed sauce was just okay. I saw they have mac and cheese and I ordered a side to try and I was not impressed with it. And I was VERY adventurous and ordered peach cobbler. The cobbler was the worst I've ever had. It truly tasted as if they took canned peaches dumped it in a pre-made frozen crust and served it to me. I ordered a slab of pork ribs, greens, and mac & cheese to go. I'm from the Deep South, and I love good BBQ. The slab of pork ribs are a nice, generous portion, which is not the case for all BBQ places in LA. The pork ribs were tender, not the smokiest I've ever had, and the meat didn't fall of the bone. I chose mild sauce (because to me, BBQ sauce shouldn't be hot), which was OK, but unremarkable. I wanted more tang, sweetness, and/or kick to the sauce. I ended up dipping the ribs in some leftover Brothers BBQ sauce that I had. I feel the sauce at Baby Blues BBQ, Bludso's BBQ, and Brothers BBQ are all much more distinctive and flavorful. The greens were good, but the best greens I've had in LA are at Bludso's. The mac & cheese is just OK, probably needing salt or higher quality cheese to give it real flavor. Both guys working there were very friendly and happy to welcome customers. If you're in the area and want BBQ, Phillips is OK, but I've had better. read more

As a BBQ lover, I was underwhelmed by this Phillip's BBQ. I've been to the one on Crenshaw multiple times and have nothing but good things to say... This one changed my mind about the chain. I called in my order and I could hear the annoyance in the employee's voice. She sounded like she just wasn't all there to be taking orders. Maybe her three day weekend wasn't that great? I don't know. I got there and I was smiling and she was so stern looking. Only after she realize that I was the one that called in, did she cheer up a bit. My beef links were pretty nasty. I ate them because I spent a lot on them, but I definitely wasn't satisfied. They tasted like what I would think BBQ'd packed dog food would taste like. It had an off texture. I'm definitely not used to that in hot links. The sauce wasn't anything to write home about. I don't know if it's just this location or if Phillip's has overall changes, but I was highly disappointed and I will not be going back.
