I was in the area and craving some BBQ. Stopped in and ordered the "tip ends" dinner. Tips, slaw, baked beans, and white bread. The man working at the order window was super nice and friendly. The food at a fair price. I brought the meal home to eat, the slaw had a strange taste, kinda tart and not to my liking. (Did not eat it). The baked bean and white bread real good. I liked the BBQ sauce but sadly the meat a bit tough. Had higher hopes for the food, but the the sweet server made it ok. read more

The beef link and pork ribs were disappointing. The rib was too soft and lacking flavor. They taste like the rib was par boiled before they were smoked. The beef link was more like Costco Polish dog than a BBQed link. With such a good review I expected better food. read more

Phillips is wonderful. I have been going there for years. We usually get a large tray of babybacks hotlines and sliced beef. The BBQ sauce we get mild on everything and a side of mixed sauce that's half hot half mild. There sides are all fantastic like mac and cheese BBQ beans and everything else. Last week I got a large tray took it home and had to leave the house for awhile. Got home for dinner and my kids had friends over the BBQ was gone. Next time I will buy more. So I just tried another LA BBQ place with mixed reviews. I guess LA just isn't an American bbq destination, maybe except for Korean bbq. Actually this is the second time I tried Phillip's on Centinela not far from La Tijera. The first time I ordered the beef ribs, partly because the guy behind the counter told me that he didn't eat pork. Mostly though, I just like beef ribs. At Phillip's I thought the ribs came heavily sauced, maybe too much. I think it made it hard to appreciate the meat. Also not very tender. Still not bad. Today the nice lady behind the counter thought I should try the rib tips. She was happy to give me the sauce on the side. For $11.25 they served up a pretty nice portion of meaty porky goodness. Good smokey flavors. Juicy and tender. Plenty of meat vs bone. I loved it. It'll be hard to try other items on the menu, and I think I found my neighborhood bbq take out place. read more

This was my first time eating at this location. I have experienced the Leimert Park location as well as the location on Crenshaw and Adams. I ordered 2lbs of rib tips with a pint of baked beans, a pint of macaroni salad and the chicken wing special The barbecue tastes different and I asked for macaroni salad as 2 sides. One to go with my daughter's meal and pint for other items I had ordered. I got home and I found that the pint of macaroni salad was coleslaw and my daughter's was potato salad. Although I asked for mild sauce the other location's sauce still had a little kick to it. This sauce tastes a little bitter as do the baked beans. Next time I will make drive in the traffic to get the right the taste. read more

Philip's isn't as good as it use to be. I ordered a mild chicken dinner plate and a peach cobbler. The chicken/sauce was kind of bland. The sides are so small, a 3 year old can finish them. The peach cobbler is horrible. The peaches taste like sugary canned peaches. The crust is a very thin layer of crappy dough. Nothing seems to be prepared homemade or fresh. I grew up in Lemiert Park, home of Phillip's BBQ, arguably thee best BBQ in Los Angeles, hands down. It's been on the side of what use to be Hubert's Liquor store at 43rd and Lemiert Blvd. Funky little hole in the wall for sure, but brother, so they have the most jamminest pork ribs, sliced beef, babybacks and links you ever had. Anyone from LA knows that the best eating joints are usually in hard to find spots. Phillip's is one of those, and as others have said, there simply ain't no place to sit and get yer grub on. Order ahead as I do (after I check up on Moms a few blocks away), take some home with you. I usually get a 1/2 slab of pork ribs, a side of Potato Salad, a sliced beef dinner and a tasty link. Sauce is normally tasty, every now and then its a bit tart, and hot am hot. Mixed is best, not too hot or mild. Last time I was there, I did get a moist piece of Red Velvet cake, excellent. So now, every other Friday, when I go see Moms, I take back to South Bay my ribs, link and beef. Wife lights up like a Xmas tree when she knows I'm bringing Phillips supergrub home with me. When it's all about the grub and you don't need ambiance, Phillips IS the ticket! Unlike Chris Rock, "one rib" is NOT enough. i went recently and got babyback ribs taste was good but kinda chewy,but i liked it , but the sliced beef was the best . so tender ,smoky and the hot sauce was nice and hot. if you dont like it hot,get the mild sauce. i love the hot links also ,and probably a lot of other things, but i havent been there in a long time. get the sliced beef and they will give you some cheap white bread ,throw a couple slices of beef in the bread and im in heaven. i had the sweet potato pie ,it wasnt bad. it was from the 18st bakery i think,they sell them at ralphs markets too. read more

Please this place should stop boiling their ribs and then baking them in the oven. A real QUER knows how BBQ has been cooked. I spent $32 for the worst BBQ EVER. Nothing taste like it was hickory smoked. What happened to this place- they were tastie over 13 years ago but they can no longer live up to their reputation. How can you cook BABY BACK ribs bad...they were dry after sitting in the oven all day, The chicken taste old and dry sitting around all day...the chicken links were ok because it was a chilcken link. And I had plenty of BBQ SAUCE THE MIXED KIND- l had too much on my meat and l also tried the pull pork sandwich -- just don't do it .. Just nasty, it was greasy and bitter with too much vinegar in the sauce.. I'm so upset... such a waste of money- I had to go and buy dinner else where. I should have paid a bill.
