As far as authentic German preperation goes, this place has it down. Yet, today's experience left me a bit...wanting. I wanted the dish I ordered to be served, but instead of Schnitzel Champignon, I was presented with Jagerschnitzel. While I enjoy the Jager finish, it wasn't the creamier, sour cream based with mushroom treatment my mouth was set for. As it took much longer to receive our food order than in past visits, (it was a busy afternoon at the Cafe), so a tad longer wait was to be expected. And, as I did not wish to wait another 20 min. for a refired order, I settled for the dish that was presented. We had driven 40+ mins. from Port Orange to celebrate my daughter's b-day, per her request, and were happy to do so. Still, some nagging details...incorrect order, smaller portions of Schnitz and spatzele (except for the red cabbage), and higher prices left the experience to be less than desired. I know it's a tough industry to be sure..but having had better experiences in the past here, I was hoping it would match those times, instead of setting new less than thrilling standards.

If you're looking for a laid-back spot with a huge drink selection and fun weekly activities,…read moreHourglass is a great local hang. The parking situation isn't the best, there's very limited parking in the front lot of the brewery but there is a lot behind the building if it's full, and it can get full so just be prepared to walk a bit if it's busy. Inside, there's a solid amount of seating with a relaxed, casual vibe. They also have games you can play while hanging out, which makes it a great place to spend a couple hours with friends. What really stands out is the selection. They have a huge variety of beers (something for everyone), plus ciders, non-alcoholic options, and even soda. It's one of those places where everyone in your group will be able to find something they like. They don't serve food, but you're allowed to bring your own, which is a big plus. There's a wing spot just a few doors down that makes it super convenient to grab something and bring it back. They also host events throughout the week, my personal favorite is Wednesday night bingo. It's always a fun crowd and a good midweek activity. Overall, it's a great local brewery with a welcoming vibe, tons of drink options, and fun things to do. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area

Have you ever wondered what German pastry heaven would look like?…read moreWell, look no further, Yalaha Bakery is what you've been dreaming of! My husband and I have been searching for a German bakery since we both have a sweet tooth for baked goodies. He's been telling me about how legendary German goulash tastes since before we got married (it's been a few years now ) and the Yalaha Bakery menu mentioned seasonal soup including goulash so of course we had to stop here. We visited on a rainy Wednesday afternoon around 4:45 pm. This place has modest architecture and a small parking lot, but don't let that fool you since as soon as you open the door, there are 4 glorious levels of tasty treats under a refrigerated glass display and fresh bread in shelves behind the counter. There were about 4 customers in the shop and a few others that came in while we were ordering. Everything looked so delectable, so it was hard to choose from the huge variety! Our bakery order ended up being quite large, so I'm glad my husband brought the cooler with him. We got 1 rhubarb pie (for a gift), 1 rhubarb streusel (another gift), 1 apple streusel, 1 German apple pie, 1 tiramisu, 2 lavender shortbread cookies, 1 eclair, 1 cream horn, 1 Brazilian caramel bar, 4 pretzel rolls, and 4 large pretzels. There might be a few other things as well. The order was about $125 with tip. Excellent customer service by the counter girl, and she was very patient while we were deciding on things. After we packed our pastries in the cooler, we went back to check out the deli section. They had a lot of German deli items to choose from, but what I was really interested in was the goulash. The very kind counter lady (possibly the owner?) took my order, and I couldn't have asked for a heartier, soul-warming soup for about $6. The meat was cooked to soft perfection. The veggies (peppers, tomato, and potato if I recall correctly) melted away while you sipped the soup that tasted like it was made by your favorite extra-skilled German grandma. I was in stew heaven. Of course, I shared a few spoonfuls with my husband, and it was gone in a few minutes. All in all, we discovered that Yalaha Bakery is a hidden gem in Yalaha, FL. If you love bakeries and handmade treats like we do, this is a great place to visit. Prepare your bank account to splurge on pastries, artisan German bread, and remember to stop by the deli! We'll be back again next time we're in the area on one of our road trips.

The nuggets were perfectly sweet and a generous portion. The icing was delish too! Also ordered the pretzel dog with cheese and bacon. I would not order this again, but I would try one of the stuffed sandwiches. The outside layer of pretzel dog was great and you get two dogs that are large enough to share. The inside was doughy in spots and the bacon was the mushy shelf stable type. We ordered with light salt but the entire combination was entirely too salty. If you don't like overly salty, consider ordering without salt. Also not a big fan of the cheese sauce. Tastes like canned nacho cheese to me. We'll give it another try and stop by to order next time. I think there are more options in store than thru DD?

We decided to order a bunch of options to cut up and share (a method I recommend!). We tried The Royal, The King, The Endangered and The Cheesy Galapagos, and for dessert we opted for the Apple Pie and Cinnamon Sugar Nuggets. The Cinnamon Sugar Nuggets were also a big hit with the group. Now that I've tried the standards, I'd love to go back when they have specials (their Instagram account showed a turkey and cranberry stuffed pretzel around Thanksgiving that looked delicious!).

So we were hopeful the food menu would be good. Well I'm not saying it's terrible, but it definitely needs work. I'm hoping it's just while they get their bearings with offering food. Steve behind the bar was great though, answered our many questions and was patient. Beer is always good here! We also love the expansion, it's created more space and more light.

I understand it can be challenging for new owners to reopen a business and uphold its original integrity, but unfortunately, these owners have failed miserably despite the multiple chances I've given them. They are extremely inconsistent with their hours, often closing during peak times or random days of the week. Tonight, for example, a busy Saturday night with the village packed...they decided to close early at 9 p.m. and were only serving rum and Coke or beer. They were literally turning away business. The authentic German food that once set this place apart is gone. While a few "German-style" items remain on the menu, I wouldn't recommend them. The overall atmosphere has completely changed, no longer family-friendly, with rude staff and no trace of the live German music that used to fill the air and make this spot so special.
