My partner and I tried this place tonight. Other than getting her order wrong (they put beef instead of chicken), i thoght it was pretty good. I got a turkey hoagie and it was really nice, good bread and nice turkey. my partner got the beef pizza hoagie instead of what she ordered, the chicken one. she ate the whole thing which means it wasnt that bad, but neither of us eat red meat much. prices were only okay, about $6 each. service was pretty fast. read more

Yo...I lived in Philly for years and did the Pat's and Tony Luke's rotation til I was blue in the face with cheese steaks and hoagies (not for nothin', but if you're a Pat's fan you don't go to Geno's). To those of you who compare Philly's Best to a real Philly cheese steak...HELLO??? You are not in Philly! You are in friggin California...don't expect it to taste the same. The meat's different, the bread is different, the cheese is different, the grill they cook it on is different...blah, blah, blah... With that being said, Philly's Best is good for what it is....Philly "STYLE" cheese steaks. I always go with a "provolone wit" (meaning a cheese steak with provolone cheese and onions). Their bread is relatively fresh and chewy, the meat is tasty and goes well with the provolone, and it's not all that greasy. There are free refills on the drinks and they have several tv's set to ESPN or some other sporting event. The tall-lanky counter dude at this location is super friendly and they get your stuff out to you very quickly. If you want crispy fries...just order some fries and ask for cheese sauce on the side...otherwise, what do you think will happen to your fries if they pour cheese sauce on them? They'll get soggy...duh. I've also tried their hoagies and they're spot-on...always get the chili spread...adds just the right amount of kick to your hoagie. Don't get me wrong....do I crave a Tony Luke's provolone wit' broccoli rabe? Abso-friggin-lutely...but what're ya gonna do? If you're eating at Philly's Best in Long Beach, CA...you ain't in Philly no more...but it is a good reminder of what you're missing back home. read more

This place was pretty awesome. I ordered the buffalo chicken and my BF ordered the steak mushroom. Unfortunately they were out of peppers when we went so he didn't get to order the Philly Cheese Steak, which he swears by. I was going to order the Chicken version of it. We got cheese fries and some pizza fries too. The cheese fries were awesome, they reminded me of the cheese fries I used to get at the Little League Baseball games when I was a kid. The cheese is that melty liquid stuff kind of like nacho cheese but it's all chedder, no spices etc. The pizza fries had marinara on it, but the marinara was pretty plain and the cheese overpowered it, so they pretty much just tasted like cheese fries. The buffalo chicken was very good. It was made fresh to order, it was SO piping HOT it burned the hell out of my mouth and tongue when I took the first bite. My only gripe was the bread seemed a little hard. I wish it was softer. I had a hard time chewing it. Perhaps it could have been a bit more fresh. The chicken was very good, it was marinated, it seemed, in a spicy buffalo sauce, the sweet grilled onions and the melty cheese lit my tastebuds on fire. It was delicious and I ate the ENTIRE thing, I didn't get a bite of the BF"s steak sandwich so I am assuming it was pretty good. He said it was good, but did say he likes the Philly Cheese steak a lot because the peppers really made the sandwich tasty. Philly's Best has the best cheesesteaks I've had since leaving the Keystone State. My usual order is the Philly's Best Chicken which has peppers and mushrooms (onions optional). I don't eat here super often because they are not the healthiest things in the world, but I have to say that Philly's Best serves the best cheese steaks in Long Beach. If all you have ever had is Steak Escape or Great Steak, you do not know what you are missing. The guys that work here are always cool, and they will make the sandwich your way, including with wiz if you ask for it. The sandwiches are made fresh to order in the Philadelphia way and when you hear the spatulas hitting the grill you will know what I mean. The rolls are fresh and soft, and their sandwiches turn out tasty. They serve chicken sandwiches, burgers and fries too, but usually end up just getting a bag of chips. They carry Wise Chips, by the way, and Tastycakes too. You never see this stuff on the West Coast. I see reviews where people complain that it is too expensive. Have you bought a Big Mac lately? With tax they are over 4 bucks and they taste like crap. Pay a couple bucks more and get a good sandwich from a shop where is can watch them make it fresh in front of you. The shop is located in a strip mall, and it is clean but not terribly special inside. There are a couple of tv's that are always showing sports, and more Philadelphia memorabilia than you can shake a stick at. Maybe a little too much, actually. First off, I like the food at Philly's Best. However, I haven't eaten there in a long time. Here's why - by 8:30 and sometimes earlier, the chairs are up on the tables. Huge turn off for us. We want to eat without the sound of chairs banging and debris being swept around. We'd like the focus to be on preparing food well and not on closing the store. Tonight was a little different. At 8:35 the chairs weren't up and the employees were working in the kitchen, so we went in and placed our order. Before paying we were told this would have to be a to go order because they had to make 30 sandwiches AFTER they made ours. The employee really couldn't explain why filling a 30 sandwich order prevented us from eating in her restaurant. Once again we had a nice meal next door at Toppings Pizza - a place we discovered thanks to lazy employees at Philly's Best. read more

Well my quest to find a place that serves authentic Philly Cheese steak has taken me to Philly's Best. Now I am not sure how a Cheese steak from Philly should taste like? I had a cheese steak with onions and mushrooms with cheese wiz! It was messy and the meat was very good, not enough but good. Onions and mushrooms were very tasty! It was no big deal having cheese wiz on the sandwich, I hope there is something else out there better! The cheese steak sandwich I have been having for years out here are a lot better. This place is so hit or miss....when the girls are working it's usually smooth sailing and a quick trip in and out. The boys on the other hand...a big huge UGH. Walked in to pick up an order and give the cashier my customers name. I hear him mumble as I'm waiting oh shit I forgot to write this one down!! Ok, whatever not the end of the world. As I'm getting the food I'm not given the drinks that are supposed to go along with the order. I ask for a bag for the beverages and both employees insist that I take a drink carrier that neither of them can seem to assemble. After popping out one flimsy corner they try to send me on my way. I ask again for a bag seeming as the cup holders are trash and he just tries to move the drinks around. I end up just grabbing the drinks and walking out since clearly neither of them have common sense. It really seems like a college frat party going on in the back....stoned as hell and can't even figure out how to assemble a damn cup holder. Not picking up from here again. I have no idea what a real "authentic" Philly Cheesesteak is supposed to taste like. I haven't been to Philadelphia since an 8th grade field trip, and Geno's wasn't on the tour. But you know what? I don't care. Philly's Best ships in all their phillyngredients, so after some assembly, I'm guessin this is pretty close. The Best? I dunno. But pretty good, and at a decent price. You can get a bunch of options on it too, aside from the standard meat and cheese: mushroom, peppers,, onions, chicken/buffalo chicken, american, provolone, Wiz, pizza (whatever that is), and on and on. I just wanted to get a good ol' classic cheesesteak with a few extras, so I went with the Philly's Best: mushrooms, peppers, onions, and Wiz. Not the biggest, but not the priciest either, this was a good sandwich-to-buck ratio. It had all the flavors you would expect, and left me on the brink of nap time, but didn't push me over the edge, which is good. So far, I've been pretty lucky in that all the cheesesteaks I've had that claim genuine philly roots happen to feature really good bread, and Philly's Best is one of em. I guess this is due to Amoroso rolls. And they have a bunch of other Pennsylvania favs here too, so if you're into that, then you should be happy here. Overall, this isn't my number one favorite cheesesteak place, but they are closer and more affordable, so that counts for a lot. read more

I love the sandwiches, especially the Philly with cheese and mushrooms. The white American cheese is so silky, creamy, delicious! The bread is soft and chewy, claiming to be from Philly. Wherever it comes from, it's good. However, I don't care for the fries. They're always undercooked and starchy. Never crunchy. So I get chips and do 1st-grade-style. I put crunchy chips in my sandwich and it's amazing. I also like adding the freshly pickled red and green peppers. They just too off the sandwich nicely. I like this place a lot. I was a vegetarian (or as I chose to say it, didn't eat meat) for about 10 years until about 6 months ago. This place was awesome beforehand but even more awesome now. I used to get the Veggie sandwich. Now I get the Chicken Cheesesteak and add mushrooms and onions. Fantastic! They use some sort of white american cheese that is pretty good. They also have authentic Amoroso rolls for their sandwiches. They even sell Tasty Cakes straight from the east coast. The price is a little high ($10 for sandwich and fries) as are most of the chain cheesesteak places like Charlie's or Great Steak. This is superior to those as well. Okay, I tried this place within three weeks of it opening (way back when), and I was SO disappointed (yeah, I'm from Back East and know a Philly Cheesesteak when I taste one): However, it was just after they opened, and I know those behind the counter were still figuring out how a cheesesteak differed from a burrito, so I am going to update this review in a week or two and let you know what has happened with their quality. However they do have Tastycakes (yippee!) and Wise potato chips (my childhood obsession), so there is some awareness in the management. As I said, let me take another sampling and I will let you know. However, I have since discovered A Bite of Jersey in Garden Grove on Lampson. I will probably never return to Philly's Best (despite the Tastycakes) since A Bite of Jersey is head-over-heels far superior to "Not Philly's Best By A Long Shot"; sorry, chain store; victory for the little people on this one. read more

I got the normal cheesesteak with extra cheese. And it was good, but it wasn't anything to write home about. I like John's Philly Grille in Seal Beach a whole lot better. Their cheesesteak is bigger, cheaper, and the workers are much more nice. The dude at Philly's Best wasn't rude at all, but he didn't go out of his way to be nice. I've been at John's Philly Grille before and forgot to buy a drink for my cheesesteak and the girl just gave me it for free. Their workers always greet me. I only went to Philly's Best because John's Philly Grille was closed. And, after my visit to Philly Best, I appreciate John's Philly Grille a little more. read more

Philly Cheesesteak The bread (roll) is excellent. The cheese is excellent. And if your cheesesteak roll is soggy from the meat, the meat will be excellent. My dad's from Philly so I grew up eating succulent cheesesteaks and Tastykakes. It's so hard to find authentic Philly cheesesteaks in Southern California, but this place is the golden answer. The bread which the owner boasted was imported from New York was not good and too soft, should have been toasted a little. A real small bag of chips was $1.70 which I can tell was priced specially for me because the owner had to think before he told me. So so so good. I just came here today for the first time ever and I was so pleased. The Philly cheesesteak surpassed my expectations! I got the classic philly cheese with white American cheese (although they do give you a few options) and then I just asked for grilled onions as an add-on. The onions were free btw but there were other add ons that you do have have to pay extra for (but like I said I just went with onions). They sandwiches come with SO much meat in them, and that's a pretty big deal for me to say since I'm pretty much a carnivore (lol). Also I do want to mention that they are smaller than a subway footlong. I did not anticipate this and ordered only 1 for myself and another person thinking they were gonna be footlongs. But no biggie :) overall I would 110% recommend the philly cheese steaks and I can't wait to try other stuff from their menu. The sandwich was $8.96 btw read more
