Hole in the wall - non chain BBQ shacks - litter East Tennessee. Meanwhile, not all are created equal. Some are poor while others, like this one, a short distance off the interstate - bring good, average BBQ. Phil's Dream Pit doesn't appear to be a tourist trap, rather a place locals come for good BBQ, friendly service and a local feel. Your traditional local spot, Phil's brings order at the counter type service and food that lands on your table in minutes. Fortunately, that doesn't hurt quality. Even though most of the meats are held in warming tins they remain well cooked and tasty. As for the sides, they remain average. The garlic bread was hard as a rock, however, and the hash brown casserole didn't lure me in for more bites. Instead, we focused on the BBQ, and didn't try the other sides. The best meat we tried was the pulled pork. It's favor was strong, it wasn't dry and the mix of five homemade sauces appeals to everyone's taste buds. There's Original Sweet, Sweet Fire, Mustard, Blackberry and Vinegar. All of them are more than acceptable. The Blackberry is the only blackberry flavored sauce I've run across in my 300 plus BBQ places I've visited. It's interesting. There isn't an overwhelming blackberry flavor, but it's evident there's plenty in the recipe. The mustard is runny, more of what you'd expect from a vinegar based sauce. Our favorite was the simple Original Sweet. The Sweet Fire didn't have much kick to it. Meanwhile, while the brisket shed nearly all the fat and brought flavor it was dry and seemed overcooked. The same could be said for the sausage. We took one bite of it and left the rest. We also ordered a half chicken (just to try it). It's fair, too. I wanted to ordered the turkey, but they serve it cold, like a sandwich you'd get at Jason's Deli or McAllisters, which doesn't tend to be the norm at a BBQ place. They did offer to heat it up, on the other hand. The banana pudding is a small portion of sugary flavor that few can complain about. It's sweet and tastes homemade. What makes this place so special is the people who work here. Most of them know many of the customer's names, where they are from and oftentimes, what they'll order. They make you feel like you're a local, even if you aren't (like us). If you're driving through town it's worth a quick off-and-back-on the interstate. You won't be blown away, but shouldn't have anything to complain about, either. read more

This was recommended to me by business colleagues in the area as the best barbecue place to go to. They were spot on. Plenty generous servings for lunch as I had the pulled pork, baked beans and potato salad. I will start my diet tomorrow! 1-22-2015 update: We went back for lunch and they did not disappoint! Fantastic place to stop on our road trip! The family all of the food, brisket pulled pork pulled chicken all delicious. We loved the variety of homemade sauces they are fantastic. Sides are homemade, we had hash browns and slaw, both were delish. Very thoughtful covered patio, it's pouring rain and chilly outside, but the patio is comfy with heaters and ceiling fans, also windows to let in light and keep watch over our vehicle and trailer. Although I am a Jersey boy at heart, I have had my fair share of southern bbq and I have to say Phil's Dream Pit is pretty top notch. My pulled pork sandwich was extremely smokey and tender. Did I mention it was prepared in less than two minutes? I don't care if you call this fast food or not but the quality of the bbq here is indisputable. Part of the amazing experience was sampling a gallon sweet tea ($3.50). Cheap, but more importantly absolutely delicious. Screw Coca-Cola, if you're gonna drink the calories, do it with some delicious sweet tea. Each picnic table inside Phil's is lined with a variety of delicious bbq sauces. One of the most exciting parts of my meal was tasting each individual bbq sauce with a beautiful chunk of pulled pork. On my next road trip to North Carolina, there is no way im bypassing Phil's. The ribs are (usually) worthy of a 4-star rating. They aren't entirely consistent and they close way too early to be convenient or good for dinner. But when the ribs are "on," and they usually are, they are great! The location is convenient off the Eastern Star exit on I-26, the ambiance is perfect for a BBQ joint, and between 6-7 PM you will have to wait in line to order. It's worth it. Ribs I got dry (wet was an option), pork was just pulled. I could see a great smoke ring in the ribs, and a different rub than I am used to. Pork had a nice color, with definite evidence of a good helping of smoke. I was hoping for a more aggressive taste in the meat, but it was just "eh".
