It's all about consistency at a place like Phil's. Is it the best pizza you've ever had in your life? Nope. Do they offer something unique that you can't get at the pizzeria 5 miles down the road? Negative. What you get at Phil's a a good thin crust pie - priced where it should be - and it's always there for you when you need it. The service is fast and friendly, and the pizza is slightly above average... which is to say that it's better than 95% of the pizza being sold in this county. You get outside of city and burbs, and pizza becomes a vast wasteland of hot garbage.... 95% of the U.S. doesn't know any better. On 01/31 my husband and I ordered a pizza for pick up. The pizza my husband brought home was not cooked thoroughly, leaving it a soggy mess. I called to let the manager know and was offered a replacement. I brought the pizza back to show them how under cooked it was. By the time I go there the pizza was literally falling apart. The manager/owner?? came out to speak to me. I have been a customer there for 40 years and we usually say hi but I am insure of his name. He said to me "Hon, next time tell your husband to hold the the pizza level" Well, calling me "Hon" is DEGRADING AND AN INSULT. The pizza was not tilted, it was not cooked all the way. If he would have admitted that the pizza was not fully cooked things would be fine and I would not be leaving this review. I mentioned how long we have been customers and he said "that is why I am making you new pizza" So, you would not have made a new pizza for anyone else after this mistake? We will not be customers there any longer. We have ordered catering as well and that will stop. All because the manger could not admit the pizza wasn't cooked all the way. I was going to take a photo of the pizza but felt it wasn't necessary, now I wish I had the photo to post was well. The area for pickup customers is small and hectic, but it has a good, friendly, high-energy vibe that was great for starting a Saturday night. People were smiling. In Chicago! Is Oak Lawn it's own thing? I've always included it with Chicago. I didn't call ahead, and waited in my car for most of the 25 minutes. Large, sausage, thin crust. And a Coke. Phil's pizza is good. But this is Chicago, and we need to nitpick to stay better than those other cities. Cheese to sauce ratio: It's high. Higher than Beggars. About same amount of cheese but Phil's uses less sauce so that boosts the ratio. If you prefer sauce lubricant to cheese fat lubricant, you might not enjoy Phil's as much. I liked it, but can see why sauce people might not. Sausage was fine. Maybe too mild but still good. Not the dominant flavor in the average bite. The crust was technically done, but I like it a little more browned and with some crispy air bubbles. Maybe hotter oven. Maybe little more water in the dough. Seems like this was a same-day dough because the flavor was not too developed. I wouldn't kick this dough out of bed. For a pizza to get 5 stars from me, certain things can't be screwed up. They don't have to be perfect, but they can't be a train wreck. It was a busy night, things were hectic, it was hot... but... this kills me... the cut was really bad. I mean it was angry-monkey-with-a-knife bad. The party cut (squares) needs to leave you with symmetrical pieces. No two pieces on my pizza were the same size. Or shape. Some were so small the adjacent piece took the topping. Some were huge--the size of 3 or 4 smaller pieces. If I didn't eat the whole thing by myself, some people would have felt gypped. The day after: cold pizza is great. It was fine the next morning for breakfast. I see why people have loved Phil's for 50 years. Or however old it is. i have recommended Phil's to everyone I know. Sadly, tonight changed my mind completely. I placed an online order, it did not arrive until over an hour and 20 minutes later, and was Luke-warm AT BEST. VERY disappointed in the entire process. Plus when I called to inquire as to where my order was,the girl who answered was dismissive and mumbled a response. I have conflicting feelings about this place. On one hand, the pizza is quite good, as is the fried ravioli. The latter seems to have a slight touch of jalapeno in the breading which I really liked. The dipping sauce is great too. On the other hand, I didn't appreciate not being warned up-front about the credit card surcharge of 4%. Who even does that!? This is literally the first food place I've ever come across this. According to everything I've read, it's illegal to charge such a fee without telling the customer prior to the point of sale. It was never mentioned - not when the order was placed, nor when it was paid for when picked up. This really rubs me the wrong way, particularly because I could have paid cash had I been told. I think on principal I cannot patronize this place again because the lack of notice makes me feel like management couldn't care less about their customers. read more

I had not had Phil's in about 15 years or so it was an option for something different. We ordered a large thin with all sausage and half pepperoni slightly well done. It was absolutely perfectly cooked. The crust could not get any better. They really put on a lot of toppings. It's a hearty pizza. The sauce is more traditional than sweet and is quite good. We added some mozzarella sticks too but they were awful. We will consider a deep dish when we pick up again and we most certainly will order again. read more

The pizza is top notch piled high and more ingredients then ANY pizza place. I'd pick one up and see how they do it. It's orgistrated process in full visual view is astonishing. This place is busier than an airport with pizza and food. I saw pizza being surgically made cooked and cut every 1:50 seconds. Out the door and that's only take out. Don't trust the food there. I been buying Pizza from Phil's for at least 25 years, 2 yrs ago I became allergic to Oregano. I received my pizza heavily sprinkled with Oregano, I didn't mention my allergy, as I have had pizza from them as recently as 4 weeks ago, the man working there said there is Oregano sprinkled on every pizza, if I don't want it I have to tell them. I love this restaurant I got to say they got one of the best pizzas in the southside of Chicago. My wife took me here for one of our dates, even though we just bought the pizza and left because there's not really anywhere to sit on but it was amazing, yes I can honestly say that it was really really good very good pizza. Would give it zero stars if I could. Ordered a pizza at 5pm for my sick family member (for pickup) so they could be in and out. They took his money at 5:40pm. At 5:50pm he asked what is going on, the girl at the counter told him she would get a manager. They waited until he asked to tell him the order never got put in the line. THEY DIDNT EVEN OFFER US THE MONEY BACK. We called to see if they would make it right and deliver. We were told we weren't understood on the phone. I can't believe I've never reviewed Phil's. I swear that I have in the past. My family has gotten pizza from here for 30+ years. It is a takeout joint only - pickup or delivery. The staff and owners are friendly, and recognize you when you come in to pickup. Pizza is awesome. It is loaded with toppings, and weighs a ton. The sauce is not sweet. The crust is wonderful. It is not a thin pizza. Someone said the sausage is grossly large - and that is probably true, but I love their sausage. My favorite is the Phil's special for a regular pizza. Their stuffed pizza is probably my favorite stuffed that I've ever had, anywhere. I like the sliced beef and garlic. So good! It is huge. Pizza bread. Highly recommend. They use a whole loaf of bread - and you can't beat the price, portion, taste. I like to get this if I am having a party and slice into pieces. I've ordered their dinners and sandwiches over the years. I've gotten catering from them. Everything I've ever had has been consistently good.
