I've been here a few times and have brought friends and family to check it out. It's definitely a different experience and taste than my regular go-to coffee spot! They have a variety of options and there's something for everyone! Two things I was the most impressed by - the staff and creative flavors! During my first visit (I think it was before the opened and were giving out free drinks), the line was SO long. They had staff engaging with people in the line just to say hello - most places I've been to are always short-staffed and staff are always so stressed out, but not here! During my visits, Chelsea (I think her name was) always took care of my drinks and recommended things based on what I like. Even though the lines were long, I was really impressed on how everyone stayed calm and had a lot of energy! Joey (maybe the manager or lead) is just so energetic and personable!!! My favorite drinks there are the rose and mint drinks - get it iced! As for food, the Samoa donut is freaking amazing! I do like the avocado toast but I didn't really care for the hard boiled egg on it. I love that Philz partners with local bakeries! Anyway, I'll be back. read more

Espresso/espresso-based drinks your go-to? This is not the place to get your fix. But if you're open to discovering some interesting and unique Java blends in a vibrant environment, then, by all means, check this place out. Sure, Philz is a chain, and I like to support local roasters as much as possible, but I really like their story -- immigrant-founded and family-run plus they're dedicated to sourcing their ingredients ethically and sustainably. Having lived in NorCal before, it's nice to see this Bay Area darling make its way to the Midwest. We finally made the visit once the crowds have died down. Upbeat music was pumping through the speakers and there were a lot of people on their grind. My friend went with the mint mojito and I went with the iced coffee rosé, both prepared the Philz way (medium sweet with cream). They use the pour-over method -- living up to their mission of brewing "one cup at a time" and tailoring each cup to the customer's taste. I did enjoy my drink. It was light, creamy and invigorating. The coffee put me and my friend in this kind of weird, energized (not jittery) state.. but maybe we were just acting weird per usual ;) If you want to brew their coffee at home, they have 16oz bags of different blends ready for purchase. One of the workers briefly passed out samples of their Mediterranean avo toast and almond butter & jam sandwiches while we were there. Thought it was a nice gesture and a great way to promote their food offerings. They offer some gluten-free pastries from defloured in Andersonville. Not sure where they get the other baked goods they carry, but they partner up with other local bakeries. I also loved the sense of community here. They have Polaroids of the different team members displayed on one of the walls so you can get to know who's taking your order and pouring your coffee. If you're driving here, I'm sorry but you'd have to deal w/ metered parking or risk getting a ticket for parking in residential areas that require a permit. We stopped by on a Sunday around 3PM. There was still a line since this place was new, but we didn't have to wait long. Ian was awesome and gave us a passport with the menu. He explained the drinks and asked if we had any flavor preferences and gave us recommendations. Order the 8 drinks on the passport by September 23rd to be entered for a prize! Once inside the great customer service continued. I ordered the Ginger Snap but I got it warm and with soy milk. The barista was very friendly and accommodating of all of my requests. They had me try it before I left the counter to make sure it was to my liking. The flavor was creamy and had a hint of spice - I really enjoyed it! I also tried my friend's mint coffee which was light and refreshing! The interior is spacious enough and will be good for groups once some of the hype dies down. I was hesitant to even try Philz, I mean can you really do something new to coffee? And I am not historically a fan of pour-overs. Philz didn't disappoint! Not the fastest process of course, and didn't try any of their food offerings many looked great! This was a very full flavored, complex brew, threw me a bit at first as I am so accustomed to the flavor blast from a Peet's or Starbucks. Delicious delicious coffee!!! They're known for their mint mojito which is cold brew topped with milk and a lot of fresh mint leaves for a very refreshing taste. On the bottom of the cup, I was surprised by a bunch of more fresh mint leaves which enhance the flavor of the drink even more. I also tried their iced Gingerbread and it was super delicious and tasted so festive! Make sure you stir the bottom because there's A LOT of spices down there like cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, all the warm fall spices. If you don't constantly stir it, you'll end up sipping very sandy sips because of the generous add of the spices. No complaints though! I felt in love with Philz coffee in LA, and was so happy to find Philz in Chicago. They're definitely not cheap coffee ($6 or more for a large drink) but you pay for the quality of the ingredients. The shop itself is super clean and bright with some nice spots to take pictures. It's not the most quiet place to do work or study, but it's definitely a nice place to hang out and catch up with friends or just have some me time. I had my first Philz mint mojito in SF a few years ago and to be honest at the time, I wasn't very impressed by it. Fast forward two years later, I picked up a mint mojito decaf at the newly opened Philz on Division. It was a hot afternoon, so the first sip was super refreshing with the minty flavors. The drink was perfectly sweetened as well. The space can get a little loud on the weekends, but there's also a nice outdoor seating area with both tables and comfy loungers. Philz Coffee has come to Chicago. My friend and I stopped by for a study session on a Monday a few days after opening to enjoy some good West Coast coffee. I got the Silken Splendor and he got the famous Mint Mojito (pictured). I opted for black, without cream and sugar. The coffee was very aromatic, with hints of cinnamon and caramel. The Mint Mojito was sweeter, enjoyed cold. The mint was refreshing, but not overpowering, and went well with the bitterness of the underlying coffee. As far as prices go, a medium-sized coffee runs at $4.60 as of now, which is slightly pricier than my wallet prefers. As a workspace, Philz has adequate seating, a bustling environment without being overly distracting, and pleasant lighting. Small "breakfast tables" are available for any computer work conducted on a couch. My only complaint would be the extremely spotty internet, which I ultimately find unsurprising due to its recent opening. Verizon coverage is also poor, so don't expect to hotspot through that carrier. For now, expect to get no work done if you need internet. Will update in a month or two. read more

The chocolate croissant is heavenly. I got the iced estatic with oat milk and a touch of sugar (would recommend it was so good). A very unique addition to the Chicago coffee scene. I came on a hot day and found the mint mojito to be incredibly refreshing. I'd never had iced coffee with mint before, but it was nice and sweet! Tops my list of best iced coffees. The coffee wasn't that strong though, and the drink itself is a bit less creamy than those classic lattes that you get at other coffeeshops. However, it was perfect for the hot summer weather. I have yet to try any of their hot drinks though, so this place probably wouldn't be at the top of my list yet. I've been frequenting Philz for many many months and just realized I haven't written a review for it yet. Shame on me. Out of allllll the coffee shops in the neighborhood, Philz is truly my favorite. Have I gone to every single coffee shop? No. But I've def gone to the majority of them in Wicker Park and I honestly think Philz coffee is the best coffee. They make every cup of coffee individually to the customer's liking. And I've never experienced less than fantastic service at this location. And the coffee beans themselves are freakin delicious. I've tried many of the different types of coffees, but my favorite is the Iced Ecstatic. Their pricing is fair, not more expensive than any other coffee shop in the area. I got the Iced Mint Mojito and it was pretty good. Little overpriced. Though I don't think there was much caffeine in there. Just it was more about the mint taste. Overall though, I think the cafe was okay. It isn't an ideal place to study in my opinion because of the lack of private spots. I had trouble finding a great spot that had enough space to spread out my stuff. Seating outside is promising, but given the weather in Chicago, not ideal most of the time. I would go back here if I were in the area. But I won't be driving out just for this cafe. read more

I think I'm not their target clientele. I HATE iced coffee. I don't understand how people can drink it. So when I came here for the first time I ordered some sort of pour over - hot. It took 5+ minutes to make, cost $6 and tasted like Folgers with cardamom in it. I also tried their almond croissant and it was hard, crusty and the filling was overwhelming and too sweet. It was so much fun being able to attend the grand opening of Philz, I first tried it on our trip to San Francisco and fell in love. Although I'm not a coffee drinker, Philz offers so many chai (tea) options to choose from. Their signature move is that there is mint and cardamom added to almost every drink which as a result gives the drinks a unique and distinct flavor. When I first saw the construction signs, I didn't really think the neighborhood needed another cafe spot (especially with Tour les Jours just opening, and Intelligentsia across the street) BUT I must say, Philz is a GREAT addition. I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon (about 4pm) and I was surprised to see a line! I didn't really understand the hype about it at first, but after drinking my first mint mojito, I totally get it! Their coffee is so smooth and flavorful! There's really nothing like it. I came by again, on a Saturday around 11:30am, and there was a much bigger line..waited for about 30 minutes (yikes I know). This time I ordered a large mint mojito, and I don't think it was as flavorful as a small size...so moving forward I would get a small. All the employees are super energetic and friendly, which makes this place unique. I also think their set-up is a little weird - wait in line for the barista to take your order, then you pay at the cashier, then you wait again by the barista for your order. Definitely a little confusing at first, because you're just standing and waiting to be called. read more
