What can I say about Philz that has not already been said? I have read the reviews, and when I was lucky enough to be playing in Oakland/Berkeley one weekend, I stopped by Philz to see what the hype was about. Could an Iced Mint Mojito Coffee be THAT good? Why all the excitement when so many independent coffee joints have amazing roasts? Would the vibe be too hipster for me? I walked in and was immediately greeted, despite how crowded it was. Chairs and tables to the left, high counter at the back. The barista was friendly and answered all my questions. Yes, they can do decaf, yes they can sweeten it without using sugar, and yes they use real mint. I know I am a pain, but I am picky about my coffee. I was treated fabulously. It was hipster central, however it was smiley, friendly hipster day, and the atmosphere was welcoming. They have you walk to the end of the counter to pay for your drink, and I admit it was overpriced for that small of a cup. However, the deliciousness begins. The hype is REAL. Amazing roast, sweet without being cloying, real cream for days, and the mint....fresh mint in your cup infusing its aromatic flavors. When you get to the end of the drink, you can see the large bunch of fresh mint at the bottom. I was in heaven. It was difficult not to drink too fast, I had to pace myself like a thirsty lover returning to an old flame. So, I am in love the fresh Iced Mint Mojito and plan on trying the Gingerbread next time. Who would have thunk it- I enjoyed the hype, the vibe and the drink. I did not try their snacks, but they do have a selection of goodies to eat, and it is a pretty nice place to hang out, study, visit or sit on the patio when the sun is out. I'm a strong believe of the experience is made up by the company and most importantly the customer service. SF native here but it was my first time trying Philz Coffee - shocking! Had to pull the "what do you recommend card" and surprisingly the cashier was extremely nice and helpful about it despite we were not the only ones in line waiting to order - thank you for that! This Philz location was our go-to coffee shop during the start of the pandemic. We haven't come here in a while, so it was nostalgic having our usual's here again! Street parking here can be a bit difficult, especially on mornings during the weekends. There is a Safeway next to Philz which has a parking lot of its own, so if you need to do some grocery shopping before or after, you could park there too. You can order via mobile app (which is what I did), or stand in line inside to order. My mobile order took about 30 minutes to be ready, which is the average wait time during the weekends so keep that in mind. There is plenty of seating outside of Philz with tables and chairs, as well as benches. I didn't see too much seating inside the store itself. I ordered a small iced Mint Mojito with creamy oat milk and medium stevia, as well as a turkey sausage sandwich (sans the cheese). The Mint Mojito was perfect and just as I remembered it! The mint leafs tasted fresh, and the level of creaminess was just right. I ordered the turkey sausage sandwich for the first time, and actually really enjoyed it. It's comparable to the one from Starbucks, but slightly bigger. Pricing wise, Philz is always a tad more pricey than other coffee shops -- however, I think you really get what you pay for! You can't recreate their classic Mint Mojito at home (I've tried and failed), and other coffee shops that try to imitate it just end up disappointing you in the end. Jacob's Wonderbar is the best dark roast I've had in Oakland. Best way to start the day. Service is great here too. Philz is a little expensive, but the coffee is fantastic and wakes you up. Covid-19 review: took 40 minutes for our order and you have to kind of time the line waiting to pick up your order. We moved up a little ahead of our order completion time and then they called out our name. At this location, there are two lines. One for mobile order pick up and the other for walk-up orders. No one was in the walk-up line but I'm sure you had to wait as long as the mobile orders. Then I heard a lady complain about her drink and was told it would take 10 min to remake it or they would give her a refund, which I thought was nice. I mean, how bad can it be if you custom ordered it online? At least they are still accommodating even during times when they can't say, "Take a sip and let me know if it's perfect or not." read more

Love this coffee almost at much as a great taco! Really, I love a good cup of coffee and Philz is my absolute favorite. I drink it black, so I really care what the actual coffee tastes like. Philz blows away the typical large coffee places (you know who). I have only tasted a few of their coffees as i don't live close enough to go often. The Philtered Soul is wonderful! It has a body and a flavor that is so rich and delicious I crave it for weeks after I have it! No bitterness, just smooth and wonderful. I may have missed the memo on Guacamole on Toast with a hard boiled egg, olive oil and spices, but I tried one today for the first time. Oh, my, goodness, it was really great! Delicious and oh so satisfying! Typically to be that satisfied after a meal, I'm think a great burger with blue cheese and grilled onions, but to get this in healthy form!? This weekend though, I was in Berkeley and finally got to try this place! I was super excited! My friend Phil was complaining about paying $4 for a cup of joe, but I didn't care lol, I still wanted to try this place. I've been a fan of Philz before they even expanded to multiple locations. Mint Mojito is the standard and I order it as it comes. Mint infused strong coffee, made by mashing mint leaves with creamy sweetness. I usually drink black coffee but not at Philz! There are a lot of great coffee places that makes great coffee but this is where you go for a mint mojito! I have always had a great experience at all the locations. The baristas always encourage you to try the drink before you leave the counter. They will remake the drink if you don't like it. This location is spacious but doesnt have too many tables inside. Love this Philz Coffee location! Staff are always friendly and they all make equally delicious drinks. I go here often for one main drink, Mint Mojito! I'm very loyal to that drink :) There's a mint added for scent. It's sweet and creamy. Good place to chill, or to whip out your laptop to work on something. Though, it can get pretty loud there, but I always see chairs being occupied by students. They also have seats outside for you to enjoy it on a nice sunny and warm day. Ok thanks to the friendly barista here, I've got my new go-to order down pat. I asked for a mocha tesora sweet and creamy with soy milk and one splenda, mentioning that the last time I did two splendas, it was too sweet. When I picked up my drink, it was the perfect sweetness - because the barista put no Splenda in, knowing the cocoa powder by itself was sweet enough. Smart man! Love that he knew his coffee. First time I've been to this location. The coffee was excellent as all the other Philz I've been to. It was a cold rainy day, and parking in the area was challenging as always. Just finished getting our taxes done, and I needed a literal pick me up after getting beat up by the tax man! Not his fault. I blame Trumps tax rule changes, and my damn 401k provider! I feel it's REALLY stupid to get penalized for withdrawing your OWN money!!! Had to be done! Now for that pick me up! When I want something with a full bodied kick, I like a combo of a half and half Wonderbar and Philtered Soul! When I want some full bodied smoothness, it's the combo of Tesora and Philtered Soul! The service was a bit slow, especially considering how many baristas were working, BUT the hot elixir arrived perfect! In the end, that's all I really cared about! Hi, I was robbed at the College Street Oakland location this morning at 10:45 am. I talked to the Manager and gave him my info and have not yet heard back. I have not been given any info or any acknowledgement of what happened. I was also told I could get refunded for the item I bought from Philz ($6.50 burrito) because the robbery happened while it was being prepared but I have not gotten my $$ back. The bag that was stolen had about $200 worth of items in it, including the value of the bag itself. I'm not expecting Philz to cover the cost of the stolen items, but it would be nice to get some support from Philz staff for what happened. The manager and multiple staff people witnessed the robbery and did not stop the woman who stole my bag. She stole my bag while I was in the bathroom. I am feeling unsafe, ungrounded, and unsupported. I do not plan on going back to this Philz anytime soon, and furthermore it feels irresponsible that the staff & Manager at this location are not taking steps to ensure the safety & stability of their customers. read more

Line could get crazy here depending on when you go! My boyfriend and I beat the rush when we came. I had been dying to try the Mint Mojito Iced Coffee and it was awesome!! Baristas are always friendly. Order with them and then proceed to the cashier to pay for your drink. There is plenty of seating inside and outside. Although the majority of the indoor seating will probably be taken by the college students in the area with the MacBooks trying to look productive and get their work done at a coffee shop. My friend raved about Philz so I first tried their fresh chai tea at the location on Shattuck. When I found out they were opening a location on College which is much closer to me and on my commute to work, I was extremely excited. This location is extremely convenient with street parking outside and a public parking lot up top that they share with Safeway and Cream. For someone who hates having to deal with finding parking and parallel parking early in the morning, this gives Philz a star just for that. The baristas are always super cheerful and after they've made my drink, they've always asked for me to try it so they can adjust it if it isn't perfect. Every cup is made individually and quickly which I am always amazed at. My Philz fresh chai tea was very smooth with that fresh chai taste and a little bit of mint leaf on top. I asked the barista to make it with medium sweetness so as not to overtake the chai. It was made perfectly. Quick in and out with a cup of tea or coffee in the early morning. I am at the college ave location. I ordered a LG. cup of your awesome Jacob's about 1/2 hour ago and the store was packed (I get it).I Came to get my coffee to the counter on two occasions and there was a cup without a name on it, I asked the crew member if that happened to be mine, which she replied to "I am sorry I did not make it, that might be yours, another employee popped in and said "that might be the one" she got a portion cup and seemed to get a little bit of coffee out of my cup just to say something to the other employee while I was standing there like a dumbass. I asked to get a refund and the only nice employee there was (an African American lady) conducted me to the register. While at the register I asked the employee if there was a manager to which she replied "I am one of the managers!" She did not say much other than asked for my name and said "cheers" and I believe she apologized as well. Anyway, just thought you'd like to know how a very loyal customer at Phil'z has been treated. I started my morning without my coffee and with 1/2 an hour of my life taken away by your crew at College ave in Oakland. We waited 25 minutes for two iced coffees! I asked where we were in their queue twice and heard 2nd, then 10 min later, next order to Make, then 5 min later still wasn't being made. Unfortunately my wife and I couldn't text to confirm that I would just bail from waiting and ask for a refund. The staff could care less about the wait and didn't bother to tell me it might be that long. Equator always tells you if it will be 10 min or more. This was my first time at this Philz location! I love this Claremont and College corner -- but it's changed quite a bit over the years. The COVID precautions were strong. We ordered ahead on the app. Medium gratitude with medium oat milk and medium honey (the "suggested" option when I opened the app) for me and medium tantalizing Turkish with medium cream and medium sugar for my husband. I usually go for one of their iced speciality drinks -- ginger snap, rose, etc., but it's too cold and rainy for all that. My husband loved his option -- he's big on the flavor of the Turkish and loves the mint! He always picks this drink (we used to live in the city and went to Philz on the regular) and is never disappointed. I liked my option -- I'm more of an almond milk fan than an oat milk one, but this drink really blended the flavor well into it. Barely noticed it! The line was short today and our order was ready quickly (might have been due to the weather as it's usually pretty long) and we were able to find parking right away. Your typical Philz - friendly baristas, great drinks, and almost no seating whatsoever. I come here at least twice a week, whether it be to study, catch up with friends, grab some coffee, or just get out of the house. The employees are kind and really know their coffee - I've never had an issue with asking one of them to modify my drink. The only issue is that this location gets REALLY busy on the weekends and in the morning rush hour (7-9 imo). I've been here at 6am and there were still a fair amount of people. When the line is out the door, expect to wait at least 15 min. However, the easiest way to circumvent this is to mobile order on the app!!! Sure, you don't get the free size upgrade with a personal mug, but mobile ordering has saved me SO much time. Prices here are typical, $3.60 for a small coffee and ~$4 for a large. Cheaper than the locations in SF! Anyways, keep doing you College/Claremont Philz!! read more

If you haven't been to Philz, you should. A lot of different blends and earthy flavors. The barista that you order with is the barista that makes your coffee for you. If you've been to Philz, this is one of their better locations for me. Their baristas on staff have always made it just the right amount of extra sweet and creamy every time. No matter which drink I've ordered. I tried the egg and avocado toast and it was good, but to me it needed some salt or red pepper flakes, but that's not to be nit picky. Not everyone might be in to that. Street parking can be a bit of a challenge. But there is a parking lot for Safeway if the street is fully packed. read more

Walked in a few minutes from closing after my phone app wouldn't work to order for pick-up. Manager said "we close in a few minutes, I'm not making you a drink." My sibling walked in a bit after and was also turned away. How many minutes before closing time is it too late to order? If the advertised closing time is different (later) than the time they stop taking orders, this needs to be explicitly advertised so people don't go all the way over to the location just to get turned away. The Philz Coffee craze is alive and well & I'm definitely pleading guilty for being a follower and lover of all that Philz has to offer from customer service to the quality of the products that are dished out here. The College Avenue location in particular is beaming with great vibes and ambiance. I really loved the interior with couches inside and the large windows letting the natural light shine in (I am totally about that life) & this location even has outdoor seating that's perfect whether the weather is warm and sunny! Like many others before me, I have to sing praise for the customer service from Philz employee. A+++! When I was still a Philz Coffee newbie, the baristas never failed to make me feel "dumb" or like I should just know straight off the bat how to place an order here since it's so different from others coffee shops you may visit. They also gave me suggestions depending on what I was in the mood for that never failed to disappoint. Parking can be a bit of a mission, but doable especially if you're good at street parking (lol I'm not that's why I bring friends who can) but I do hear that some patrons park in Safeway's lot. If you think the Mint Mojito is the greatest thing on the planet, try this. Your tastebuds will thank you - Iced Yerba Mate with almond milk and honey, full creamy, light sweet - Iced chai with almond milk: The chai here is really good!! The spice is prominent without being overpowering, and it doesn't taste artificial Honorable mentions: - Mint Mojito: Kinda tastes like water after having had the Philtered Soul though - Philharmonic - Silken Splendor I love this location!! The baristas are so kind and friendly, no matter how busy it is (and there's usually a line out the door). You can easily get here using the 51B or 79 AC Transit bus lines. I think you can even park at the lot on top of Safeway!! There isn't as much seating as at the North Berkeley location, so if you're planning on camping out for a while, that Philz might be better, but if you get here early enough, you can secure a spot. There's one huge table with a bunch of power outlets, as well as a few smaller tables. There is also outdoor seating in front of Safeway. As for pricing, it's $3.50 for a small and $4.50 for a large. The Jamaican Blue Mountain is $7 for a small and $10 (I think). ~$5 is pretty pricy for coffee, but if you're going to be spending that much for a cup of Joe, Philz has some of the highest quality brews you can get Bottom location: Philz stole my heart. This is the location I frequent the most. Stop by La Farine, grab a morning bun, and hop on over to Philz for the greatest mid-morning treat you could have. Tip: Bring your own mug/cup/container!! They will charge you for a small and give you as much as a large/a little more if your container can hold it!! read more
