We've been regular customers since one of the first Philz Coffee opening in SF and have always had a great experience with the staff who've been down to earth and nice people overall. Yesterday I decided to get my kid a treat and hang out there and was disappointed by the staff. There was a lot of swearing and loud shouting between the young staff - seemed like tension and teenage drama. It was a crappy vibe. Not sure if I would go back with my kid. Phil'z has excellent COVID-19 safety measures, the best I've seen of any food service establishment so far. Their Coffee bar is sectioned off far away from the cash register, and they have hand sanitizer at the entrance. They have everyone wait outside and call your drink when its ready. The Iced Ecstatic is smooth mouth feel and has a delicate yet noticeable flavor, one thing I like about Phil'z is that everything is great, even without cream or sugar. There are a lot of choices and they're great about modifications, for example, I got a Mint Mojito with honey instead of sugar and it was just as delicious as the regular version. The prices are reasonable considering that the quality is so good, please note that although they're not as fast as Peet's or Starbucks, the quality is way better for around the same price, and the ambience is more genuine and cozy and they have great group seating and a lounge like area (pre-COVID) as well as outdoor seating. The first bad experience was we got our drink. It tasted nasty. I asked for a remake. They remake it and it still tasted nasty. I think the cream was bad or something. I was in a hurry so I just took the drink and left. I throw it out. She seems like a new barista because I never saw her before. (Note we went on a Sunday and they were busy when we made the order so we went to Safeway then came back to Philz to get our drink hence why we don't know who made it) My wife doesn't really check what she drinks but she said her drink was mediocre at best and that she had before in a different day that it tasted better so she didn't finish it. I took a couple sip and I realized something doesn't look right. My min mojito was supposed to have a mint so when I felt something I thought it was mint leaves. But, I saw something black I thought it was just oxidized mint but it wasn't. I pulled it out and It's a fucking feather! Like what the fuck. It was so disgusting. Like idk how that feather got in there. Yes sometimes this location has bad days. Great coffee, but the location is quite busy so expect to wait! I ordered ahead using their mobile app. The app experience is smooth and easy, and drinks are very customizable. You can choose the level of sweetness, type of sugar, type of milk, size, hot or iced, etc. The app said my drink would be ready in about 25 minutes, but I waited another 15 minutes after arriving. Overall, the wait time was about 45 minutes on a Saturday morning. The Mint Mojito was delicious!! It had a nice subtle mint flavor that wasn't too overpowering. So glad that Philz is now doing the mobile order option in East bay. It had been a while since I went but I was surprised at how large their large sizes are and for about $6 it's well worth it compared to similar coffee places. While I tend to always get the classic philharmonic I've been trying other flavors like the iced ginger snap coffee and the iced mint coffee. We came and found out the ordering process was slightly different from other places I've been to. When you order your coffee, you actually tell the barista first. You then make your way passed all the food and pastries. The final step is actually going to the cashier letting them know what your order was and pay. Customer Service: Awesome! Our cashier helped redirect us on how to order. And our barista let us know what the popular items were based on what our tastebuds were used to. When our drinks were ready, we went back to the counter where they made the drinks to pick it up. If there was any changes, they will make it on the spot. When I asked for more sweetener, my barista went ahead and added more. He was really pleasant about it too! Ambience: Pretty much like any other coffee shop. It's casual and comfy. Perfect going solo or having a nice chat with someone. Drinks/Coffee: My husband ordered a iced coffee with real deal chocolate. He loved it. I ordered a baklava, avo toast with egg and the iced mojito coffee. The baklava was crisp and buttery. I LOVED the iced mint mojito coffee. You taste the refreshing mint and coffee. The mocha tesora is really good too especially if you like chocolate. I always get mine sweet and creamy with almond milk! Perfect study spot, but get there early to get a seat. They serve breakfast foods, pastries, coffee, and other drinks! I tried the rose iced coffee that everyone's been posting about! I got it with oat milk and less sweet (it comes "sweet and creamy"). The first few sips tasted like rose, but after not as much. Most people's photos had a nice pink top among ice cubes, but mine just looked frothy, foamy, flat, and underwhelming. I wanted a nice photos :/ They also walked around with samples of coffee and brownies! I thought that was a nice gesture! My only problem was that the ordering set-up is weird. You walk up to the high countertop where the baristas are and order from them. And then you can either wait for your drink and then pay, or pay and then wait for your drink. But since there's no ticket, the cashier must have to trust you while you give them your order to make sure you are paying for what you ordered. One of my hardest adjustments to the Bay Area has been switching from Coffee Bean to Philz/Peet's/etc. I'm not down on any of these coffee shops...I just love, love my CBTL! My first time involved a crowded shop on a weekend morning and I completely spazzed out. Someone else had to order randomly for me and I just grabbed my cup gratefully and drank that sucker down. Luckily, it was their Tesora and it was amaaaaazing. All the flavors were there but they managed to tone down the sweetness. Fast forward to this month. Coffee Bean unleashed THE coffee drink of all time (for me.) A combination of my two favorites - hazelnut and rose. I was NUTS for this combo. I swore I would search all of the East Bay to find a suitable substitute. I think it was a sign that this particular Philz was testing out a new beverage - the coffee ROSE. I am pretty sure I squealed out loud when I saw the sign. The coffee rose came with rose water, not rose syrup like CBTL. It was definitely something new and I have to admit, I wasn't a big fan on the first sip. The floral notes took over to an almost overwhelming place. But after I swished the cup a little, it settled in and WOW. I really liked it. The rose blended in well and the quality of the coffee really shone through. I get the hype now. They've been a hit every time and as someone who enjoys coffee as a treat, I am so happy to have finally found a good cup of coffee in the Bay. read more

Hmm... maybe it's because I'm not a "coffee" drinker? Everyone constantly raves about this place, but it wasn't anything special to me. First off, the setup is kind of weird... I really wasn't sure whether to go to the cashier and order like I do at other coffee shops or stand in the line in front of the baristas. When I asked, one of the baristas said that it was my choice... ok, well I was still confused, but I just stayed here. I waited in line and finally got up to the barista counter. Since it was my first time there, I asked her if she had anything similar to a Chai tea latte. She told me that they didn't have lattes, but they could add cream and sugar to simulate one... great :-/. She asked me how sweet that I liked it and I told her to make it as sweet as she could. She told me that she would make a Philz fresh Chai and call out my order when it was ready. I then shifted over to the line for the cashier. While I waited, I scoped out their pastry section... sad to say that it looked really puny for such a busy shop. Although there weren't many pastries to choose from, I spotted a cinnamon roll and decided to go with that. The cashier asked me if I wanted it to be warmed up and I agreed. He rung up my order and it came out to $7 and some change. Wow... either I'm really cheap or this place is just expensive. I couldn't imagine coming here and spending over $7 a day on coffee and a pastry? How do you people do it? Mind you, I got a SMALL sized "tea", not a latte because they don't have them. The barista called out my order and she asked me to try it to see if I liked it. It was really hot, and I couldn't really taste it at the time. I felt bad because she was so sweet, so I told her that it tasted fine and then I went back to work. I let it cool down for a bit and took another sip. It tasted super minty and it was barely sweet :(. It definitely didn't taste anywhere near a chai tea latte. I think the cashier might have left the cinnamon roll in the oven for too long because when I got back, it was as hard as a rock. I still attempted to eat it but discovered that there were raisins inside... is this normal? All I could taste were hot raisins. The best coffee I've ever had! Simple as that. I ordered the Mint Mojito and it was truly amazing. I've never had mint leaves in my coffee and from this point forward I will not have coffee without mint leaves. The coffee is so fresh and robust. It doesn't have that general burnt taste and you can tell it is freshly brewed. It was sweetened to perfection. Usually when I order a coffee I have to doctor it up to my taste. This coffee is the real deal, full embodiment of perfection. I'm gushing about coffee. Something I swore I would drink less of because of the terrible brews I've been having. The mint ice coffee is so so so good 11/10. Perfect for a refreshing summer drink. ($4.50) I don't even like mint in coffee or tea but this totally changed that !! This is also a great space to catch up over coffee or even work/study. Note: They have AC and this place is heaven on a summer afternoon. I have been back a couple of times but I wanted to highlight how friendly and kind the staff is here. We ordered a small mint ice coffee to share between two people.
