This location has been here for many years. I remember back in the days when the roads were open in front of the store. Now those roads are painted with different colours very beautiful. The road in front of the store is closed for the cars to pass through. We really like the walk around and also we stop here for the Philz coffee. The concept is great, drip coffee for each order. They're off to a good start. I will give them that. But the quality of the coffee was substandard. The coffee was sour. It did not have a robust taste the way it should. With five or six splendas, I could not get the coffee to taste good. There's another coffee place that has sour coffee very similar and that one is called the Verve in Santa Cruz. I feel a coffee establishment should have the most robust flavorful coffee and not leave an acidic flavor in ones mouth that one would get from a 7-Eleven coffee that has been sitting in a coffee pot for 20 hours! Honestly, that coffee at 7-Eleven would taste better than the coffee I got at Philz! I feel like I want to go into Phil's coffee shop and completely change the coffee order and how it is brewed. The second part of my issue with Philz is the fact that the coffee was way too strong! Back off on the amount of coffee for a freshly brewed Americano. I got 12 ounces of espresso!! I don't want that! I just want a good coffee that's not going to make my heart race but give me an adequate amount of caffeine with a prodigious flavor. what an aweful experience... this ain't the same philz I used to go in my college year. A single cup of coffee took 25min. Didn't taste good... very watery. Seems like everyone working here move as slow as they can. I almost took some pictures to capture how this one person at the counter never there when there are line going out the door... but why bother? Large and spacious Philz. There's a lot of people working here, but there's usually at least a couple seats available for those who just want to hang out and chat. The back door leads to the big parking structure next to the movie theatre, which makes it convenient to enter from the front or back. Bathroom has a diaper changing station. There's hot chocolate in the menu for the kiddos. Like all Philz the drinks are consistent and staff is friendly. I prefer to order on the app to save time since they make the drinks on the spot every time. My only complaints would be is that the place is starting to get a little run down. With the shiny modern Blue Bottle nearby, you really feel a stark difference in upkeep. read more

This is one of the many locations that Philz coffee has and to compare it to other locations, I will say that this space seems bigger than most. They definitely offer more tables for customers compared to the berkeley location. Service here is fast which is nice. Just like other philz locations, they have the same menu as the others such as philharmonic, philtered soul, etc. read more

They finally decided to offer a large size drink option so I've finally decided to write a review for this Philz location. Located in downtown San Mateo, this spot is conveniently located near restaurants, bars, and small shops. The backside of Philz is a a few steps away from the downtown parking structure which adds to the convenience when you're attempting to satisfy your caffeine fix. They're laid out in a hallway shape with the coffee ordering counter a few steps away from the front door. The cashier counter is further back in the middle. They do offer a decent selection of food items. If a turkey sausage breakfast sandwich sounds good to you then I highly recommend this choice. This location almost always seems busy with students and professionals on their laptops, so seating may be hard to come by at times. Service has usually been warm(like their carefully dripped coffee). This is arguably my favorite Philz location due to the large interior space and consistency of their pours. read more

Fancy schmancy! That is about the best way to describe Philz Coffee! Nice decor and interior! Spacious which in the Bay Area is not all that common. Fancy coffee drinks which remind you of a high end bar, rather than the coffee shop. Weird setup where there are 2 counters so first time customers like me will get confused where to order and where to get their drinks.... Perhaps this can be a nice place to go on a date, or meet your friends to enjoy 500 calorie coffee...however it seems that place is crawling with computer nerds, and everyone is on their phone, headphone or computer....the times we live in I suppose! read more

My first time to this location and I was amazed with the size of the space. Not being the biggest coffee aficionado, the menu can be quite intimidating. Luckily, I had tried the Iced Coffee Rose at a different location, and the one I had today was the best I've had so far! I'm not a fan of the bitter flavor of coffee, so the rose adds a great floral touch, that creates a very refreshing drink. So happy they offer the LARGE size, it gets the job done! Ordering was simple. Go up and place your order and coffee bar, then move over to the register in the middle of place to pay. The staff were very polite and offered great customer service. The music and vibe of the Philz was so inviting and made for a great place to work for the day. I came in around 12pm, and finding a seat was super easy. My laptop was dying, so I posted up on one of the counter seats with plenty of accessible outlets. It's not overly loud, and I was able to concentrate no problem. Spacious with a ton of tables, work areas, and outlets, a perfect place to get some work done and short meetings. And their wifi is consistent and reliable. I think there is a reason why this Philz has 4.5 star and such good reviews while the other one in San Mateo is merely 3 stars. This location in downtown San Mateo has very consistent quality, my coffee always tastes the same, always strong enough for me to stay awake throughout the day. Lived in San Mateo for 3 years and go to this location frequently. Staff is really friendly but the coffee is inconsistent. Depending on which barista makes my drink I'll either love it or be extremely disappointed. If you're someone who doesn't go to Philz regularly you may not notice a difference. But there are days, including today, when my coffee tastes watered down and diluted even when I ask them to remake it. Nonetheless, I'll always continue to support Philz. read more

My first time trying Philz was this location since it's close to my workplace. Upon first interaction and not knowing how things work there I waited in line and asked about the menu, the girl was very short with me and never smiled once even after i apologized and said it was my first time, I'm older gen z so I get how being a barista can suck when it's busy but it wasn't. Every time after that I used mobile pick up and today I went to pick up a $8 burrito which is overpriced for the size and quality that it is, when it was dropped after being made I went right up to grab it and smile and say thank you just to confirm that it was mine and got the most uncomfortable gen z stare , he first looked away to avoid me then looked at me when I said thank you and then just completely ignored me? I don't know what I could've done to be an easier customer :(. I don't want to say his name bc I think he's new? but I feel very judged and uncomfortable now I won't be wasting my money any more. Most of my friends who are coffee-holic recommended me to try Philz Coffee especially for their most famous Mint Mojito iced coffee. * Mint Mojito It had really special taste with Mojito and it was great for summer. Mint spread on our taste bud and we felt refreshed when we tried. * Iced tea Rose This was their newest choice. There was strong rose-flavored in the coffee and it tasted like rose tea but not too sweet. * Philtered Soul It was not too strong but little bitter with hazelnut smell. In our opinion, it wasn't good with oatmilk so we recommend to have milk or soy milk with it. Their coffee was great for a day and we would like to try again shortly. The only complaint is the way how customers order and pay. It's kind of confusing for people who come here for the first time. read more

BIG TIME DISAPPOINTMENT!!!! WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!!!! I ordered 1 single drink and waited for than 30 minutes even though there were only 2 people in front of me! The barista (CHRISTINA in white t-shirt) were so consumed by talking to one customer and stopped ever, didn't even make one single drink for 10 minutes while customers were all standing around waiting. By the time my drink was ready, there were about 10 people still waiting. And the worst part was she was the Shift Manager too...thus is SO DISAPPOINTED AND SAD! I've been to a lot of Philz in the bay area, and this location is by far my favorite. It's spacious, and has so many tables for you to study, work, or just hang out. I've also found this location to be consistent in terms of the coffee, I will always appreciate that. I used to have a long commute via CalTrain and I'd look forward to getting dropped off in front of Philz for my cup of coffee to start of the work day. Dancing water, chocolate with cashew notes and oak milk over ice was an expensive and disappointing drink. I'm not sure what kind of oat milk they use but they oatmeal was extremely watery, and the chocolate notes were drowned out by the watery Taste of the oat milk. The service here was super slow and unorganized and they allowed people to cut in front of the line, and I felt that if your regular here you get your drink order faster. I usually order the iced ecstatic with vanilla soy & light sweet. The great thing about Philz is that you can customize the creaminess and sweetness of the drink. But the hygiene at this particular location has been appalling since the first year. Today I unfortunately had to use their rest room and this is what I see. I love Philz. I love how their coffee taste. My fave is the Mint Mojito Ice Coffee. You tell them how sweet you want it and how milky you like it. They grind your beans and brew a cup for you. Think that's why the coffee taste so rich with flavor because it's not a pot of coffee it's just one cup being made so all that flavor is yours. They also make sure you sip your coffee before you leave just in case it's not to your liking. If you haven't been please try a Philz Coffee. There's multiple places all over the bay. SF, Oakland, Fremont, San Jose, San Mateo and a few other places what I know of. Sure there's way more. Philz also has coffee beans you can buy and Safeway and Target carry the beans.
