Usually when I order lamb kebab I expect full of flavor and juicy, but this lamb was TOUGH like I had to really chew and there was no flavor. Ghormeh was bland too and not that many cubes of beef. Pita bread and rice were both good. The staff were friendly but not really helpful...we asked what ghormeh was and he just said it's "beef." I would say gourmet bazaar (Rockville) is much better.

The entree was a bit of a cafeteria style thing, but it fit the bill; the menu says it offers not only tofu but some red kidney beans in a stew of greens with lime flavor, and while I can't think of any similar combination I've had in all my travels, it works. The yogurt they offer on the side is a Persian staple, but what really shined was the fresh bread whose odor wafted through my vehicle as I drove my takeout elsewhere. A delightfully thin and browned creation, it was 100% worth adding despite the fact that they already gave me a massive pile of rice (with a bit of saffron rice on top of the plain white rice). This isn't high-end cuisine, but they delivered distinctive flavors in a timely and convenient fashion, and with a good range of vegetarian choices. Of their other locations in DC, Maryland, and Virginia, some of them offer these stews with tofu mixed in and some do not, though falafel and a few other options remain available.

This would probably rank among the worst shawarmas I've ever had in DC. My partner got the greek salad with chicken added, which was also not at all to her liking. It had spinach, white onion (why not red??), cherry tomatoes, and minimal feta. It really wasn't a proper greek salad like she was hoping for. On top of all of this, this place was not cheap. The shawarma pita and greek salad with chicken totaled nearly $30. The workers were kind, and the inside had a hole-in-the-wall feel, which I normally expect when going to good greek/mediterranean delis, but the food quality was just so bad. Overall, I was super disappointed with the quality and authenticity of the food and will not be going back to Byblos deli anytime soon.

Two bad experiences at this restaurant. First time there was a hidden charge for ordering a seafood pho (charge is not mentioned anywhere on the menu nor did the waiter tell us anything about it when we selected that dish). When we told the waiter, he said he would tell his manager but didn't do anything to fix the bill. Since the food was good, decided to give it a second try. The menu was still not corrected to note the additional charge for a seafood pho and a few days after dining there, we saw our card was charged twice. In addition to this, the service is really slow and it's hard to get the waiters' attention because they are too busy watching tv. There are way better places to get pho in D.C.- don't waste your time or money! read more

Best pho place period. Me, my wife, and my friends all think so. All other pho's are always disappointments so it's nice to come back to this one. Also, the main staff is super nice. Once I was here with a friend, and my friend paid cash while I paid with a credit card. They ended up putting it all on my card, and I forgot my friend's $20 bill at the restaurant. A week later when I went back, the waitress came up to me and said I forgot this last time, and gave me the $20. I know it doesn't seem impressive as a review, but I never would have remembered that on my own. Since my wife and I go there often, the owner sometimes gives us deserts or drinks that she prepares for fun in the back. Honestly the experience couldn't be better. read more

I went to Pho 14 yesterday and ordered a four (4) egg rolls. I paid before the order and left a $1.00 tip. When my order arrived, I picked it up and started to walk towards to door. A Vietnamese woman ran up to me and asked if I wanted to pay for the order. I was stunned,! Why would this ignorant idiot assume that I had not paid for that little food. I started to return the order and ask for my money. I guess she assumed that since I am African American that I would not have money to pay and would steal a pitiful order of egg rolls. I must say, their Pho is truly delightful! The soup broth is packed with flavor, though it may lean slightly towards the salty side, but not overwhelmingly so. It was somewhat like a Chinese yumi-lao玉米烙 but more moist. The most surprising thing was that despite being entirely vegetarian food, it has the sweetness and meaty texture of fried shrimp paste. The sweet and sour sauce is similar to the Thai sweet chili sauce commonly found in China, but thinner. Served in a small cup, it looked like a cup of black tea, making it more refreshing. Grilled Pork Neck: Very different from pork neck in Chinese Thai cuisine; it's more like Cantonese char-siu叉燒. The pork neck was very well marinated and grilled to a very tender perfection, with a rich and smooth honey aroma, and a subtle wine aftertaste, but it was slightly too sweet for me. Nam Jin Jaew was primarily composed of the tangy kick of lime and the savory saltiness of fish sauce, complemented by the mild spiciness of bird's eye chili, the special fragrance of cilantro, and the sweetness of palm sugar, with a subtle hint of smokiness. It was refreshing on the whole, and incredibly layered - I fell in love with it instantly. Tom Saab Soup: It looked light, but it was surprisingly spicy and sour! The ribs were very fresh, all marbled with fat and lean meat, stewed until incredibly tender, allowing you to taste the natural aroma of the meat. The sourness was subtle, clear, and mild, with a base of lemongrass fragrance that added even more depth. My friend thoughtfully ordered it mildly spicy, but in the end, it just felt like it lacked a kick. Mango Sticky Rice: The best mango sticky rice I've ever had! The sticky rice was cooked to perfect texture and warmth, absorbing the coconut milk flawlessly - neither too watery nor too dry. The first taste was the fragrance of glutinous rice, followed by the sweetness of coconut milk, and a refreshing, slightly tart mango to cut through the richness. Thai Iced Tea: Too much condensed milk, excessively sweet. My friend said it was much sweeter than the last time she had it. Was this a change in the recipe, or did the quality control need improvement? Donsak is a district in Surat Thani, Thailand, and also the hometown of the restaurant's co-owner and manager, Boom, where she was born and raised. The restaurant's introduction states: "When she left for the US, Boom didn't know she wouldn't get to see her home again for many years - and she still hasn't. Donsak is a way around that." No wonder what truly touches the heart, is indeed the taste of love and home.

We have been looking for a sushi restaurant in our neighborhood and was hoping Yosaku could be a frequent family dining destination. Instead we were publicly called out by our servers for not finishing our food. Apparently it was happy hour where certain nigiri sushi items are $2 per piece. There is only one sushi menu - the kind you fill out with a pencil. One side is nigiri and the other side are rolls. Yosaku does not have a comprehensive menu of all their sushi offerings. For example, we asked for uni (sea urchin) and ikura (salmon roe) that was not listed on the menu. Our server Thung had to look up the price of the items on a computer. We ordered multiple rolls and a la carte items. Less than half our order was "happy hour items". After our first round, the hostess came over and tried to give our check to us even though we had not asked for the check. We told the hostess we wanted to order more food. The hostess made a weird face and said loudly "You can't order happy hour anymore". We were confused as there was still 30 minutes to happy hour. The hostess then brought over Thung who very loudly in a crowded restaurant accused our family of trying to take advantage of the restaurant's happy hour. Thung kept saying that happy hour items were for dine in only not take out. We explained that we are clearly dining in and had been dining in the restaurant for more than 1 hour. If we were ordering take out, we would not have parked our car, sat in the restaurant, and be expected to tip for service on the entire order. Thung said Yosaku's happy hour was like an All You Can Eat sushi restaurant where diners have to finish all their food before ordering more and diners are charged for the food they don't finish. Thung accused our family of trying to cheat the restaurant. Everyone in the restaurant started looking at our family. We responded that Yosaku is clearly not an All You Can Eat sushi restaurant. We said there is only one menu and nowhere on the menu does it say all food ordered has to be finished at the restaurant. We pointed out that we ordered more items a la carte than happy hour items - such as uni for $7.95 per piece and ikura for $5.95 per piece and specialty rolls for $10+ per roll. Our total bill would come out to more than $50 per person. Thung then stated how you people are always trying to cheat the restaurant during happy hour by ordering too much sushi and taking their leftovers home. We replied "you are making our family uncomfortable - we are trying to order 2 more pieces of sushi and dessert." Thung said "You can order but it will be a to go order and we will charge you the to go price. No happy hour." We were motified as everyone was now looking at our table. We asked for the check and told them it was unnecessary to embarass us for requesting 2 more pieces of sushi and dessert. The price difference was only $5. So for $5 total, the restaurant felt the need to berate and shame our family and disincentive us from ever returning. Note on food: We ordered tobiko (flying fish roe) which is a traditionally a orange color and is orange in the picture on the restaurant's website. Instead, our flying fish roe was black. We have never seen flying fish roe that color.
