My first Pho experience! I decided to give this place a try after driving past it for the last few months and always wondering. After initially embarrassing myself and ordering some Pho (Foe instead of Fuh), I received a plate with three egg rolls and dipping oil and a giant bowl of steaming Pho. I ordered the beef broth with round steak and beef brisket pieces. The giant bowl of Pho was accompanied by a plate of fresh veggies (basil, cilantro, jalapenos, lime wedge and bean sprouts) to add at my discretion Before digging in, I took a taste of just the broth. Amazing. I know this is going to sound silly, but it just tasted so complex, like a lot of time went into it. I started adding some of the herbs and veggies and a big squeeze of lime juice, then dug into the rice noodles. You can't be shy here, folks. You ARE going to slurp a lot and, if you're super unskilled with chopsticks like me, potentially get some broth on your shirt. It's totally worth it, though. Filling and delicious. Since it has been a few years since I first reviewed Pho 36, I thought I would do an update. Pho 36 is now my FAVORITE location for pho in the Indianapolis area. It is a great restaurant that is locally owned and operated by a Great family. Pho 36 would be the perfect location for someone new to Vietnamese cuisine & pho to take their first "test drive" of the options. I also think this restaurant would be a good choice for someone new to any kind of "non-American" cuisine to try to broaden their palates to something different than burgers and chicken fingers. The owner will take his time to explain menu items, answer questions you have, make recommendations, and even offer suggestions on how to eat trickier/more complex items like pho (especially in the case of pho. My husband & I both learned how to eat pho by basically spying on other people in other restaurants or by watching Anthony Bourdain eat it on TV, lol. We would have loved a real in-person explanation when starting-out). When we are in there, I love hearing him take his time to explain items, even when the place is packed. He is the waiter, server, busboy & cashier simultaneously, WORKS HIS REAR OFF, and still takes the time to educate his customers & offer suggestions if needed. The owners are also great about recognizing their regular customers. Case in point, when we were in last evening, after a 2-3 month hiatus (sorry :-(), he brought 2 iced teas to our table without us even asking. He knows us. Speaking of their iced tea, it is jasmine tea that is unsweetened (sweeteners are available) and it is OUTSTANDING. I feel like I probably drink a gallon of it when we're in there, and sometimes I feel guilty about that, but it's delicious. Another perk about this restaurant, It. Is. CLEAN! The dining room is kept in great condition and from the peeks I have seen back into the kitchen from the dining area (through the door or window), and it looks impeccable compared to some other restaurants in town I have had Pho in... Some people might complain about slow service, but this is a truly family run business with a small crew who all have to multi-task to the extreme. We don't mind that it might be a while until we get our check on a busy weekend night...because we know the owner is off providing excellent customer service at another table and will get to us when he can, and it gives my husband & I a chance to slow-down & just enjoy being present. A few of our favorite dishes at Pho 36: *Appetizer- Fried Rice Cakes with Egg-- This is our favorite appetizer and it is what we tend to start our meal off with each time (I think the owner has it written down on the pad before we even open our mouths to order now...lol). The rice cakes are kind of the consistency of little dumplings, that have a lovely pan sear on them. They are then sauteed with eggs & green onions. Then topped with a lovely pickled carrot/daikon garnish & black pepper. It is then served with an amazing dipping sauce that is so yummy I could drink it with a straw...but no worries, I restrain myself. *Appetizer- Spring Rolls-- I'm not normally a fan of the soft/cold type of spring rolls, but I like them here. The couple times we have had them they have been freshly made & delicious. * The Pho--- They offer several variations of pho, with most of the variations being what type of meat is served in it. There's no mystery meat at this Pho Shop!! (some would be sad by the lack of mystery meat...but I like easily recognizable cuts of meat). I typically get the rare beef with meatballs. My husband normally gets a combo with brisket & rare beef (I think). I love to super-spice mine with the hot sauce, especially in the fall when my sinuses start rebelling. I am always impressed with the quality & quantity of the garnishes that are served here (typically includes cilantro, basil, bean sprouts, jalopeno & lime...and a heaping pile of it). *The Vermicelli- it's outstanding here, and they offer several varieties of this too. My personal preference is for the grilled pork with eggrolls option...because it is like getting your entree with a bonus appetizer surprise in it. I love the delicious complexity of their vermicelli sauce here. For those that aren't aware, the noodles in vermicelli are served cold. This was a shock to me the first time when I didn't know, but it's delicious. *I forget the name, but they have a "pork in a clay pot" dish that is Delicious. It's served to you in a clay pot, with tender, delicious slices of pork that are in a bubbling-it's-so-hot sauce that is delicious (but very salty, be sure to drink lots of that delicious tea, as mentioned above). It's served with a side of rice. You can get it with catfish too, but I can't attest to how that version is, since I don't eat catfish. *Boba Tea--it's ok here. It's served smoothie style & it fills a boba tea craving for me (why aren't there more boba tea places in Indy?!) read more

Ok so this is a little disturbing but I went in to pick up our Pho and see the chef come out from the kitchen as I wait at the register. You can see the chef and kitchen clearly he had no gloves on came out rang me up, took my card and gave it back then without washing hands wiped his very runny nose then grabbed some noodles with his hands and threw them from the bowl to the pot . Great independent restaurant lost in a sea of mediocre chain restaurants. The owner and his wife are very friendly and love chatting you up. It's truly a family business as all the cooks are related to the wife. Extremely reasonable prices, but the true test of a pho house is the broth and Pho 36 comes through with flying colors. Rich and flavorful without being salty. There are also several banh mi sandwiches to choose from and they are all priced $3.75. For fans of bubble tea, they have a small, but well-chosen selection of drinks. Next time I'm lost in the food desert that is Rockville Road in Avon, I will seek out Pho 36 as my oasis. read more

After hearing many good things about this place I was expecting some pretty stellar food. And, ya know what... I got it! I was a pho virgin before coming here, and that helped make the experience all the better. They have an extensive menu with lots of pho choices and plenty of other choices to keep the whole group happy. We started off with their spring roll appetizer - the rolls were beautiful and absolutely delicious! Heck, I'd come back just for those again. Then the pho itself. Oh my. So freakin' good. Plus, since I got the large size, I had plenty left for another meal later! Sure, the place is really small and nothing fancy, but our delicious dinner made up for anything lacking in atmosphere. Plus we were having a great conversation with some friends, so who needs fancy surroundings anyway? Moral of the story? I should have tried pho long ago. I found my visit to Pho 36 to be rather interesting. I ordered the spring rolls and I believe they were $3.95 and well worth it. They were nice size and tasted very fresh. I would say these were some of the best spring rolls I have ever had. I would rate them a five. I have been eating Pho for many years now, but have mostly just ate it at two different restaurants. As soon as I saw the bowl, I knew this looked different. I have always taken a few spoonfuls of the broth before ever adding anything to the bowl. Before I tried it, the broth looked clearer than I am use too. I took my first spoonful and I wasn't sure what to think but it tasted good. By the second spoonful, I was like this is different but good. I added everything that you see in the picture and I enjoyed my Pho. When deciding what to rate this place, I was torn between a 4 and 5. I decided to give Pho 36 the five because the price for a large bowl was $7.99 and that is reasonable. The Pho itself would rate slightly higher than a four but not a four and a half. This restaurant is located in a strip mall. There are about 8-10 tables and it looked like several people came in for carry out. The place is nice but nothing fancy. From what I could see the place was well taken care of and clean. The service was good, and the waitress accommodated my requests. I would recommend giving this place a try and I will be back myself. If you are bored of chain restaurants and think for yourself and are not manipulated by millions of dollars in TV commercials to make yourself believe you have to eat average to below average overpriced food at some chain restaurant, I am one of you. While he teased me mercilessly for only wanting red, not green, bell peppers in my food (I swear, they DO taste different), he happily obliged. He told us that everything is made fresh, so you can remove or substitute easily. I was a bit disappointed in the bubble tea. It was definitely power, the ice wasn't broken up enough, and the tapioca balls were a tad overcooked. Build your own pho?? Yes please! I was having a craving for pho, like I do everyday and decided to give in. I work on the west side and had heard wonderful things about this place, so I called in the order-"Chicken Pho and Spring Rolls please!" The place itself is small but very clean. I waited only a few minutes and my food was ready. Once I got home I realized that everything was separate. There was a bowl with the broth, a container with noodles and chicken and a container with the basil, bean sprouts,lime and jalapeño. What fun! Once I constructed everything, I dug in! I think I have had this place bookmarked since I moved to Indy..never got around to checking this place out until a couple of my friends and I met the owners. All the dishes made here are their own family recipes. It was pretty packed at 2pm on a Saturday, but we only had to wait 5 minutes for a table to open up. It's a really small space, but clean and I'm always a fan of loud restaurants. We did have a little wait on getting our orders in; the co-owner/hubby of chef seems to be the only server. My girl friend and I ordered spring rolls, Vietnamese chicken wings (for her 6 year old), Pho tái and Pho tái chin (when we got our bowls we couldn't tell the difference...). The 6 year old really enjoyed the chicken and was pretty proud of eating everything off the bone. My Pho tái was very tasty and I'm so pleased at the super large portions. Nothing like a hot bowl of ph on a cold day! We finished our meal with bubble tea; it's not the best bubble tea I've ever had, and I certainly have never had it in slushy form, but it was still pretty good. I only wish it had more tapioca pearls. Overall I enjoyed the whole experience--and I will be back! I want to try a Vietnamese sandwich or a rice noodle bowl. read more

I have a confession, this was the first time I have ever had pho! I know, I am very behind. But at least I can now say I have tried it. It was late on a Saturday and my husband, sister and I were HUNGRY. We decided to try out Pho 36 because my husband and I have been wanting to do so and my sister is always down to try new food. We got there about a half hour before they were to close and I felt a bit guilty but the owner did not care at all! Perfect start. We spent some time with the menu and asked a couple questions and prior reviews have described him perfectly, nice but witty and the conversation was fun. We started with a couple of bubble teas, I tried mango, my sister got green tea and they were both delicious, my only small complaint came from these though, there were definitely some large chunks of ice that were a bit annoying but honestly, the rest of it was so tasty, I didn't mind. We also tried the spring rolls and they were fresh and delicious. We all got pho, though I think we all got slightly different versions. I didn't really know what to do with everything but I just put some stuff in and dove right in. It was very good and perfect for a cold night. We all tried to finish as much as we could and the large size is definitely large! We wished we had saved some more space in our stomachs for dessert, but that will have to be next time. I will definitely be back soon to try more of the dishes on the menu and get some more bubble tea! I really want to try the avocado one! read more

Pho-Nomenal! This is an AWESOME mom & pop run Vietnamese restaurant. It was my first experience with this cuisine type, and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable about what the food was all about. I am officially hooked on pho! We started with the fried rice cakes with egg. Quite tasty and filled with onions as well. They are bland (but I love bland), but they come with a spicy dipping sauce for those who care to indulge in that. I also had the chicken noodle pho. It was great and came with sides of various herbs and veggies I could add to it to my liking. For dessert, we had the creamed corn and tapioca dessert. Very different and not in a bad way. Over the past 4 years I have probably eaten here over 60 times. I have seen this place go from great to good to average with each management/owner change. The original owner never sacrificed quality to make a dollar. The second owner basically took over the original receipts and food quality was good. The new owners seem to be trying to mix things up a bit with the receipts and food quality. The vegetable spring rolls have gotten smaller and taste different. Obviously a change in quantity of ingredients. The Pho soup base has little different flavor but it still good. As for the service, the single lady who works the front can not keep up with busy times. Assuming this is why they are now hiring. Overall this place offers a good bowl of pho (use to be great) at reasonable prices. Of course I'm going to give it another chance in a couple of weeks to see if they can iron out some of quality issues. read more

I eat here every chance I get. The food is fresh and flavorful, the service is great, prices are reasonable and portions are HUGE. Their pho is amazing -- the broth is absolutely wonderful and that's what makes or breaks a great bowl of pho. I particularly love their cabbage salad appetizer (with pork and shrimp) and often eat it as a meal, but oh, that pho! Do not miss this gem of a restaurant. My only critique is this: the entry is just a single door, so when you eat here in cold weather, every time the door opens, a huge draft of icy air goes through the restaurant. This is truly annoying in the wintertime. Unfortunately, I don't see how they can do anything about it in their small space. I was introduced to Pho 36 by my co-workers after I first arrived to the area and have got to say that I will be coming back. The portions are generous for the cost, and the service was excellent. The waitress was friendly and was very quick to ask if we wanted anything else. She would continually come back and check in on us. I got their Chicken Pho and it was really good. While the service is quick and Kim is so very kind, the veggie pho I ordered was not up to par. As someone who eats this dish weekly, the order I had at pho 36 was simply not good. Finally a Pho and Banh Mi (my FAVAORITE SANDWICH) all in one spot! After reading alot of positive reviews from Yelp users for this place I finally made it down to Rockville Road to try for my self. I went during lunch and ordered the Grilled Beef spring rolls and the Grilled Pork Banh Mi. The spring rolls were made fresh and had grilled beef, vermicilli and mint wrapped inside served with a side chili/fish sauce. These were very fresh tasting and that mint added just the right amount of herby-ness. The Banh Mi was SO GOOD! Now I am a Banh Mi snob...yeah I said it. I believe that as with any sandwich the bread accounts for 50% of how good or bad a sandwich is. You can have the best toppings in the world but if you dont have the right crusty/chewy/soft bread to serve it in, whats the point?!?!? Pho 36's Grilled Prok Banh Mi met all my criteria. It was a decent size (12"), pork was grilled just enough and not dry. The mayo on the sandwich tasted homemade. The toppongs (shredded carrots/shredded daikon radish/cilantro) were super fresh and added a great crunch. Add a lil Siracha and were off! Alot of Banh Mi sandwiches tend to not be filing enough (hence me ordering the spring rolls on this trip as well) but Pho 36's sandwich was just the right size for me and was filling. The resturant itself is small (maybe 25-30 seats) but it was very clean and the gentlman who took my order was very knowledgable about the menu and had answers to all my questions. Pho #^ will now be added to my weekly rotation now as I have not been able to stop thinking of my sandwich. The service here was awesome. The guy running the place was super nice. I LOVED THEIR SWEET CORN PUDDING. Please get this. It is sweet corn with tapioca and coconut cream. It's to die for. The pho and chicken pho broth were too sweet for my personal preference. I don't know if they use MSG because I didn't feel the effects after. The egg rolls were good too. The food is definitely good. There was a girl working there, young high schooler, that was beyond rude. She rolled her eyes at me when i said i wasn't ready to order and then let a big puff of air and walked away. Once we ordered the food didn't take long to come out but I saw her touch it multiple with her long nails as she kinda tossed it at us onto the table. She never asked us if we needed anything even though she saw we both had empty water ever time she passed by. A customer asked her what shaken beef was and her reply was "it's just beef stuff." When we were done eating we just needed a to go container and the check, for this we waited 10 minutes and then just walked up to the front counter.
