I am on a mission to find the best Pho in Chicago. I have been struggling to find a good Chicken Pho. This place had good reviews so I gave it a shot. I ordered delivery and everything was packaged well and was still nice and hot. - Chicken Pho: While this is better than other places, the broth isn't as flavorful as I look for in a Pho. Needs more of that authentic flavor. - House Special Pho: Absolutely delicious! This broth had all of the authentic flavor I love about Pho! The basil in the veggie/toppings baggie wasn't completely fresh. Their side of toppings could have included more basil and jalapeños. Overall I was satisfied. I love pho in the morning when it's at its freshest so when I saw pho cafe nearby I couldn't pass at the opportunity. I ordered the pho tai, as I usually do, and this place has some the best broth I've had in a while. Super savory and fragrant and still delicate and light. It tasted like watered down instant coffee powder . Do not waste your money on coffee here! The veggies/herbs that go into the soups were lacking on Saturday morning. But decent on Sunday night. The portion sizing for their noodle soups are great. And the soup is actually good. Got 4 thumbs up for the pho And 2 for the bun bo. We also had the spring roll appetizer. It's basically noodles and 3 shrimps in rice paper. Not worth it. If you're only here for the entree. Yes. If you're looking for a meal, no. Haven't been here in a long time. Now it's under new management. A few cosmetic changes have been done. It's a little brighter inside. The amount of tables haven't changed but I like that it's brighter. We ordered take out. And wasn't sure what to expect. Other places are a bit skimpy with the broth when it comes to take out. We had 3 take out pho dishes so when the order was ready it was 2 heavy bags. We had 2 orders of beef ball and tendon noodle soup. And 1 rare beef and beef ball noodles soup. The carryout containers with the noodles and meat were plastic bowls. Very different than other places. With the 3 orders came 3 large containers of broth. Which was more than most offer. The broth has so much flavor and we had plenty of left over broth that we used it to make our own ramen noodles. The bean sprouts, lime, basil and jalapeño for each order is packed in a zip lock bag. The amount of meat is hard to review as not sure of the amount received when eating at the restaurant. But for take out it seemed reasonable. Next time will have to eat there. The beef ball seemed small in size as they cut them in quarters as most place they leave them uncut. The taste was ok for the beef ball. I think I would rather have them left whole. So glad that there is a decent pho place near by now and I don't need to make the trip to Argyle, especially when I need a hangover cure. First off, make sure you bring an appetite because the pho bowls here are huge! I got the #12 pho and it was pretty darn tasty. Comes with lots of noodles - which is what I'm all about and a good amount of meat. We also tried their spring rolls with shrimp. They were very delicious & fresh. If you're in Chinatown on the South side, do yourself a favor if you're in the mood for Vietnamese and check out Pho Cafe. It's definitely better than the other Viet options in the immediate area. With new ownership, the service and food is miles better. Service is friendly, and yes, they'll even offer suggestions or answer any n00b questions that you may have. The kitchen does a pretty quick job of putting together your order, and it's good! The one downside was that they didn't have any tapioca balls for my friend's boba drink at the time. I'm hoping that was just a one time thang. I had the Thai iced tea, and it's always a nice, cold treat to pair with apps and your meal! We had ordered some fresh spring rolls, and they were rolled fresh. So fresh that the noodles were still warm! I'm used to it being room temp, but that's okay. At least they were rolled to order and tasted good. The pho that I had was decent. You'll get better in Argyle, but this is nearly as good IMO without having to trek up North. Broth was a bit greasy. Only the roll-your-own-spring-rolls had an adequate amount of salad and other leafy fixings, but we happened to have some basil growing in our garden which fixed the other vermicelli salad up nicely too. Tendon peices were small and the tripe was more chewy than usual. The prices are on the higher end but understandable as this the city. The broth was delicious and the timing for the soup was fast! I'm glad I finally found a pho place close to me that has decent pho. I used to have to trek up all the way to Argyle and if a pho craving hits on a weekday, I'd really rather not have to sit through rush hour traffic to get up north. I'm not Viet so I can't tell you if the food here is authentic, but I can tell you that my taste buds were happy after eating here. I loved the Vietnamese spring rolls as an appetizer (they seemed pretty popular too from what I observed). The pho size is GINORMOUS. I think I only finished half and I was already stuffed to the brim. The broth was decent- I've had better but this was still tasty and wasn't too watered down. It's filled with a bunch of Beansprouts shrimp.. and the egg taste super buttery the carrots and cucumber are marinated with something that complements it all together.They give you the food in less than 10 minutes. The place can get crowded even late at night and parking can be a challenge. But if you're lucky like me. You have to give it a try ! And it's possible to find a parking spot. Woah woah woah, when did this place receive new management? The previous Vietnamese restaurant was one of two that I frequented for pho, and now that this cafe has popped up, what am I to do? Of course I would come check it out to see if it lived up to its predecessor. Minus a few setbacks with slow service, the food here was absolutely worth the journey. We came on a Saturday evening and the restaurant wasn't overly packed. Perusing the menu, it's got staples that you'd find like pho, vermicelli, and rice plates. While some items seemed overly expensive (banh xeo was $11 and the salads hovered around the same), their pho was right around $10 which is normal for Chicago. We did however began with some appetizers which were some of the highlights of our meal. We started with the spring rolls with shrimp/pork ($4 for two) and these were bomb! The rice paper wrapping felt so soft and the ingredients inside blended very well together. Dip that into their homemade peanut sauce and you're all set. These were some of the best spring rolls I've had in the city and are not to be missed. Next, we ordered the pork chop ($7.50) as a starter and damn, these were flavored extremely well and definitely worth a try. Finally, our two bowls of pho (~$9.50 each) came out- one house special and one seafood bowl. They were massive for the price with plenty of meat and a hearty broth to accompany. I was a bit confused when they gave us a ramen spoon to use for the pho but I guess it's more hipster? They did not provide small dishes for your hoisin/sriracha mix unfortunately but you'll be able to survive without. Pho definitely hit the spot. While the food was pretty good, service was definitely hit or miss at times during our meal. We had very attentive service at the beginning that led to us trying to flag down someone to take our cards for payment. Not to mention that a table next to us waited nearly an hour for their food while we received ours rather quickly. The restaurant is located in a strip mall in Chinatown with metered street parking ($2.5/hr). We were not given the option to choose the hour increment and was charged the max of 2 hrs. We were seated and the server took our orders promptly. Everything came out quickly except for the vermicelli bowl. The menu is extensive with the usual Vietnamese fix - phở, noodles bowl and rice plates. We ordered egg rolls, spring rolls, gyoza (fried dumplings), phở đặc biệt, vermicelli with grilled pork and egg roll, Thai iced tea, Vietnamese iced coffee, avocado smoothie and 3 color dessert. I want to point out that an authentic Vietnamese restaurant would not call fried dumplings gyoza and it's rarely on the menu. Phở comes in one size (no option for small or large). The portion is generous. However, the broth is dark and lack the pho aroma and flavor. Clear pho broth is a good sign that it was simmered long enough. Sadly, this bowl of pho didn't meet the mark. The egg rolls were a major fail because we tasted the five spices. Vietnamese egg rolls do not have five spices in it. The gyoza are okay because they're premade (clearly from the mass produced frozen package). The vermicelli bowl wasn't good. The grilled pork was quite bland and chewy (didn't taste fresh). The carrot wasn't pickled and the dipping fish sauce was a bit too sour for my liking. The Thai iced tea was decent. The avocado smoothie was bad! It was very bland and I could only taste milk and ice, no avocado in it. The coffee was ok. ETA: the dessert it terrible! Don't ever order it. Che 3 mau usually comes with homemade jelly, mung bean and coconut milk. Theirs was full of grass jelly and red beans from the can and whole milk instead. It's really not worth $6. We won't be back and definitely do not recommend this restaurant to anyone. My guts are telling me that the owne/cook is Chinese. From the egg rolls to pho, nothing tasted authentic. Seems that this place has new management every few years, the food is a hit or miss. I order the combo pho with an additional side of extra noodle. On certain days the side noodle comes with soup and some time not. The service is mediocre at best but manageable.
