Ah, pho ... that tasty Vietnamese noodle soup that warms the soul and palate. Rewind the tape a few years, when I worked in Fountain Valley, you were likely to find me in any number of Vietnamese establishments in the FV, Garden Grove, or Westminster (or "Weht-MINH-tuh" as homie Eugine puts it), getting my rice noodle and rare steak boogie on. But since a change in career put me down in the LBC, I hadn't had much of a chance to be the lone #1 soul brotha getting stares in a Vietnamese restaurant, until a co-worker mentioned Pho Hong Phat. From the outside, it isn't much to look at, and inside's the same story; they didn't spend a ton on exterior or interior decorations. But looks aren't always important, as long as they put out some good food. Our mini-entourage arrived just as the busy lunch hour began, and we managed to get seated quickly. The two dining rooms are relatively small, but packed with tables and chairs; "asses to elbows", as my old high school football coach would put it. After shimmying to a seat, grab the menu card off the table - I'll save you some time, all the entrees are pho - and wait for an unsmiling waiter to take your order. Whatever, it's all about efficiency here. After grunting confirmation of my order - a medium #16 (pho w/ meatballs), he was off to the kitchen. A couple minutes later, another employee arrives with a big platter of bean sprouts, lime, and misc. herbs for the table, and shortly afterwards, the pho arrives. On a previous visit I'd had the rare steak, but for whatever reason I was feeling like meatballs this go around. They weren't that bad though, since I finished off all of those split meat-spheres floating in the bowl. The XL pho was filling, but a little pricey compared to other places I've been to for an XL pho. The chicken was thinly sliced, which was nice. I not sure at what point I can start considering my self a pho expert, but I can now say I have had enough pho experiences to make a well educated assumption that Pho Hung Phat is By far the best!! Almost every time I come here, which is almost 3-4 times a month we are seated immediately. The reason I am updating my review is because after trying so any other pho spots including places in Cerritos and Westminster, I can not find a place that competes with the taste here at Hung Phat. Pho is all about the broth; and this place knows how to make it perfect every time. I definitely like to intensify the taste by adding the condiments, but even if you are someone who is not sure what to add; the flavor of the soup is definitely good enough. I love to order the bread to dip in the soup. It is called Cha Quixote! If you have not tried it, you really should! I literally could have this combination of bread and soup every week for the rest of my life! Only downfall to this place.. This is our family's go to place for pho in Long Beach. Their service and pho are always consistent. My usual order is pho tai (rare steak) and it comes in piping hot. The quality of their meat is great and broth is always flavorful. Also really love their special hot sauce! Has a little tang to it. Pho is the food to my soul. I can have it 3 days in a row, in 90 degree weather, breakfast or dinner. This time, breakfast. Dude they open at 8am!! Stream come true for night shift workers. This place only sells pho, no com ta, no vermacilli bowls. They stick to their specialty. A lot of repeat customers come in where the workers great the customers by their first name. It's really home like. But now for the pho... I had to stick with my chicken pho for my first time and there is 4 different sizes (small, medium, large, extra large). I got the large and left so full! The chicken pieces were a bit dry since it is thinly sliced breast meat. The broth was good and flavorful but tasted clean. Get some Chinese donuts for desserts or like some who dip it in their soup. And of course an iced coffee, coffee and condensed milk. The best way to drink coffee. I love the soup here. It has a nice beef stock flavor without the watered down taste with very little grease on top. The waft from the soup has a slight smell (not a bad thing) and reminds me of plain beef stock with that nasty beef flesh smell (Much like pork bone stock ramen, where some hardcore places has this nasty porky smell but once you start eating it doesn't bother you at all, same with this Pho). I ordered a medium size and it's huge. There were plenty of chewy and flavorful beef in this bowl. Noodles were medium thick and initially firm but quickly softens. Like the reviews before me indicated, this is strictly a Pho place but there are plenty of varieties on the menu along with various drinks. Tiny place but has a fast turnaround, very little waiting. Just tried this place today 09/28/15, the reviews convinced me lol. Parking really sucked, had to park at the mexican restaurant next door. Place was clean but very small, it felt condensed/compact even for having split rooms. Waiter took my order right away, food came out really fast too. Looks like everything is already made, as u can see all the big pots in the kitchen full of food. As far as taste, I wasn't a big fan of the broth. And they were pretty stingy with the meat. This place was great! My husband and I went today because we were both feeling under the weather and we wanted to get some soup for lunch! I really liked this place. It seemed like there were a lot of regulars there, while it was super busy, the table turnover seemed quick. The Pho hit the spot. Belly warming asian comfort food, this pho is wonderful and incredibly aromatic. You can get a bowl big enough to bathe in and quite honestly the best broth I've ever had. For about $7 or $8 dollars your tummy is full and ready to burst. I always order pho Tai (rare beef soup) and add shrimp for $2 more, so worth it. I had such a weird experience with the service here. I ordered a large pho and an order of two spring rolls. For one, the portion size are so weak and very much overpriced. The flavor was good but I've definitely had better. The spring rolls never came and because the large was not enough food I ordered another to go at which point the server scolded me about saying next time to order to go orders when I placed my initial order. I was so confused by this and I really left a bad taste in my mouth. I asked him why he was making such a big deal about it and then reminded him that I didn't even receive my full order. Although pho may seem like a simple dish, it can vary greatly from one place to another. The primary difference, I think, is the flavor and texture of the broth. Thus, some of the one and two star reviewers may not like the broth served here, which is infused with anise and perhaps cloves. I think it has a clean and fresh flavor and actually doesn't need any added sauces. Service is efficient and friendly enough. When you're done, you just go up to the register, and the lady will know what ticket is yours. Pho Hong Phat is pretty much everything you would expect from a hole in the wall restaurant that only serves Pho. Before you step in the door, know that it's CASH ONLY. When you sit down, they automatically drop the fixings onto your table. The thai basil, bean sprouts, and jalapenos are all fresh. The Pho comes with the standard choices of meats ( steak, flank, tendon, tripe, beef balls, and even chicken and seafood) and you can get any combination of these. Unless you get seafood, which is $1 more, you pay the same based on the size. You have your choice of 4 sizes: Small ($5.70) , Medium ($6.20), Large ($6.65) and Xlarge ($8.95). The broth is a little lighter than I would prefer, but it doesn't taste watered down. All though you get a healthy dose noodles, they aren't generous with the meat. However, for the price, the food is fair. Some people on yelp seem to be complaining about the serves, but really who goes to a whole in the wall expecting great service. Depending on the time you go, the vibe changes. Can range from a relaxing morning to a busy afternoon. Yet no matter what the service is always fast and family oriented. No card accepted, so bring some cash or go across the street to the cvs if anything. The menu is small but the combinations are endlless. The pho is always fresh every day. The best thing about their pho is that is very simple but tastes so good and so fresh. In my opinion I don't even need to add anything to the broth. For me, a good tasting pho doesn't need anything. No hoisen sause or siracha. The pho always comes with the usual sauces: hoisen, siracha, salt, pepper, and fish sauce. But here they have a special sauce. Best part about this place: The speed. My coworkers and I come here, and the second we sit down our waiter is just standing there ready to take our order. You feel rushed for a second, but then you realize it's a pho place, and the only thing you're getting is pho. You really don't have that many knobs to turn. So what seemed like 5 seconds after everyone ordered, the first 3 people get their pho. I think from the time I got out of the car, to the time I was ingesting pho was probably on the order of ~3 minutes. I guess some people might be offended, like they were trying to rush people through, but I appreciated it. There is no good pho in Long Beach... EXCEPT HERE!!! Don't even think about ordering the pho at china star (although everything else is good) There are 3 things that make for good pho: 1. The service here was great! The people are super friendly & the pho came out fast! The pho was really bad, however. I ordered the XL & DH ordered the L. My portion was A LOT of noodles & very few meat. The broth was super bland- think water & marrow aftertaste. We ate it cuz we were hungry, but we will not be back. P.S.
