I am down with a cold and wanted some pho. I decided to try a vietnamese place close by my house. This happened to be it. Since I placed and order to go. I ordered 2 pho soups, one chicken, one veggie with tofu, 3 eggrolls and an a thai tea with boba. The total was $35, this is pricey compared to the other pho places I have been to. When I got home I wished could have eaten it to make me feel better. Sadly, all I could eat was the broth and veggies. The noodles were soggy and falling apart. It was mixed with the hot veggies and tofu. Very unsatisfying. When you order to go make sure they separate all the veggies and meats from the noodles. If the noodles were in it's own container then I'm sure the soup would have tasted much better. The 2 stars was for the staff as they were very friendly. I have never written or felt the need to write a negative review. I have also always enjoyed my visits to Pho La Jolla-- now, I can say I will never be coming back. Today I ordered a to-go order and was brought the wrong order. I thought it was no big deal and told the staff, just to be yelled at by the person behind the counter. I told her I was sorry if there was a miscommunication but it was not what I ordered. I believe what had happened was that she misheard me when I ordered (but I did repeat my order 3 times). After she had told me that there was absolutely no chance I had ordered what I said I did, I mentioned my friend also overheard me say that I had ordered what I had wanted (the chicken pho) and she had said that the only person who matters is her, since she was taking my order. She also ordered me to "stop talking" a total of two times, one of the times after I said I would pay the difference between what I wanted to order and what she had put in the system. The second time was when I had apologized, again, for any miscommunication when I was ordering. At the end, she had given my card back to me in a very aggressive manner. I understand if she was having a hard day-- it happens to all of us-- but her response to me when I was not placing blame on her at all and being polite was unwarranted and, frankly, inappropriate. Unfortunately, that's what is happening these days at this business. Friday night 10/9/20, I placed a very basic order over the phone for take out. Told it would be ready in 15 minutes. I get there to pick it up and there's about 10 people waiting in line outside. 1 guy inside running around like a madman, trying to process walk-up orders, taking orders over the phone, dealing with the GrubHub guy, running credit cards, helping the kitchen, bagging the orders with condiments, utensils, etc. Basically one person doing the job of 2-3 people. As a result, I waited 20-25 minutes for this poor underpaid guy to try to take care of everyone. POOR EXPERIENCE. While I realize the need to reduce staff at times, your Friday night dinner rush is NOT one of the times when you run a skeleton crew. Not wanting to pay a second person the $12/hr or whatever you pay them is going to cost you far more money in lost business. I would recommand the ''Combination Pho''. It was really good!! A bunch of different kinds of beef gave out various textures. The rare steak was amazing! You can sink it into the hot soup for a minute and it would be cooked, so no worries if you don't like rare meat. But it was really fun to see those cute pink pieces becoming white. The milk tea was not good. Anyway I think pho would be the best choice, not to mention it is in the name of the restaurant. I came here with my mostly non-Vietnamese roommates who wanted pho. As a Vietnamese-American who eats authentic Vietnamese food, I am never coming back again. The restaurant itself was standard, not too clean but not too dirty. None of the workers were Vietnamese--a bad sign already. The menu is outdated and items have been taken off despite that not being obvious. Entrees go for about $10 which is quite expensive for what I'm used to but they give a large portion. I ordered bun thit nuong (noodles with grilled pork) but whatever I ate was not thit nuong (grilled pork). Instead of being thin, it had the appearance and texture of meatloaf? Also, the nuoc mam was outstandingly sweet and I needed to load it with sriracha to get it remotely close to actual nuoc mam. I tried a bit of my roommate's pho too. The broth was flavorless. It needed to be cooked for at least few more hours. Service wasn't good either. Waiter was curt and didn't come to pick up the check for 15 minutes. Shame that this place is closest place to UCSD that attempts Vietnamese food. Save your time and money and just go to an actual Vietnamese place in Convoy instead. read more

We decided what to order and then waiting for the server to return for our order which didn't happen. Instead of taking our order we watched as he cleared tables around us and meandered about. Finally I had to ask if he could take our order. We waited and watched as 4 other tables who had been seated after us ordered and then received their food. I finally asked if they could check on our food. The server didn't say a word or make any sort of facial expression, I immediately thought maybe that's the problem they hired Zombies as the wait staff. This would explain the lack of any kind of care for any of the customers. After the server went in the back to check on our food he came back out and didn't even come over to let me know if it was going to be ready soon or how long it was goin g to be. He just went about his business as if I never asked him a question. Food finally came out and it wasn't even good, egg rolls were soaked in oil and the grilled pork was oddly formed, like either it wasn't pork at all or it was boiled first and then grilled. On top of the horrible service the pricing online isn't even close to what the menu in the restaurant says. Expect to pay 4-5 more dollars when you get there if you looked at their online pricing! We paid 12 dollars for our Bun dishes (normally 8-10 at most every other place in SD) to recap you're going to pay top dollar for a pretty terrible experience overall and food that is lackluster at best. If I could rate this restaurant lower, I would. Their menus are not updated - they no longer serve tripe or tendon in their pho, and decided to swap out tendon for shrimp in my friend's meal, neglecting to tell us, and disregarding the fact that he was allergic to seafood. Upon asking them to switch the order because he was allergic, they were difficult and refused to do it initially. After finally persuading them to change the order, we emphasized that he could not eat any seafood and wanted his pho order plain, and when they brought it to us, the order had vegetables and green onion. He also still got an allergic reaction to the seafood, meaning they did not actually swap out the order, or used the same soup base. In terms of food, their pork meat is a heated up meat patty cut into many pieces, their brisket is awful, and the soup noodles are hard. When paying for the meal, they limited us to 3 cards only, which is normal, however, when we told the cashier to input the specific amounts (we were paying for our own food) she split the total bill by 3, ignoring our claims and our arguments. Furthermore, we paid $21.25 in cash and she overcharged us by $10 on the cards because she input the amount wrong and was difficult when we told her she made a mistake! By far the WORST pho place I have ever eaten at. The service was terrible, the food was terrible, and none of the employees take accountability for mistakes, blaming the customer rather than accepting fault. DO NOT COME HERE. read more

A decent pho place. I ordered the Special Combination Pho and it satisfied my pho cravings. The broth was a little too salty for my personal liking, but it had a good ratio of noodles to meat. I ordered a large bowl which turned out to be a little smaller than what I was expecting, but it still managed to fill me up for lunch. Overall, it wasn't the best bowl of pho I've ever had in my life, but it certainly wasn't horrible, either. Pricing wasn't so bad, especially considering the location of the restaurant. I went for lunch on a weekday, and it wasn't very busy. There was ample seating both indoors and outdoors. I had no trouble finding seating right away and the servers took very good care of me during my visit. Service was friendly, fast, and efficient. I had absolutely no complaints during my visit. First time at this establishment and by far the worst experience I've had at a Pho Restaurant. I had a couple of issues with the food and service. 1. I had ordered the #1 as a first time customer and received my food with shrimp. The menu had not stated there was any seafood and when I requested a change of food they gave me a hard time and told me that "it's been three months since we changed the menu" and were almost insistent on me keeping my food despite my allergy. 2. The service was extraordinarily poor, the waiter was very rude and impatient. I had initially made the complaint to him and he took no time to regard it and made it seem as though the error was on my side. When I talked to him again he had seemed irritated and directed me to the other waiter. 3. They remade my order, but I'm pretty confident that there was either a fish-based broth or some sort of residue remaining as my lips and tongue reacted as it normally does to seafood. 4. Paying was a hassle, they limited us to three cards and when we tried to pay with three cards + cash they had given us a hard time and overcharged on the cards and couldn't complete simple math. We had spent an extra 10-15 minutes at the counter trying to pay for the meal because simple arithmetic couldn't be split after many years of experience. On top of that, there is a required 15% gratuity fee; needless to say, if that wasn't the case, there would have definitely been NO tip. If you are someone who values good customer service and good food, then this is not the place for you. They are cheap and as others have said, try to cut corners quite often. The required gratuity is an obvious indication of this knowing that they won't receive any tips because of their crappy service. My friend and I were in the mood for a big bowl of pho, and he'd heard from his brother that this place had good, well, pho. We saw a bunch of people standing inside (we couldn't see that most of the people standing were actually waiting to pay, and the tables were only about 4/5 occupied). The place looks like it's been newly renovated, and the walls weren't completely finished, so it looked like we were eating in some sort of warehouse or empty office break room. Not appealing. We both ended up ordering a shrimp spring roll (~$5.50 for 2 rolls), and we each ordered a vermicelli dish - his the combination with grilled shrimp, chicken, and egg (Imperial) rolls at $11. Being a big fan of Pho Y in San Jose aka the best pho place. This pho disappoints. The broth was bland. The meat is okay. They actually don't have a lot of variety of meat like pho restaurants usually have. Only reason why I go here because it's so close to UCSD and is the only pho place around this area. I also ordered the avocado smoothie with pearls. The pearls that came with it were small. Not bad but not amazing. The waiters are nice and tentative. The restaurant is clean, serves the pho on fancy bowls. --also if you order the com tam (rice plate), usually it should come with side soup. But this restaurant doesn't. Limes, limes, limes. Wherefore art thou, limes? Three of us ordered white chicken pho and they only brought out four slices for all of us. Wha? We asked for more and the waiter forgot. The white meat chicken pho is good, except for the chicken, which is dried out and chewy as jerky. My friend had a large amount of dark meat chicken in hers, which she picked out and which is actually a rip-off because the white meat pho comes in one size and it's more expensive. We asked for three separate bills, and the waiter told us he'd give us one bill but that we could pay separately. Well, that is not so, because there's a sign at the register that says you can only use one credit card for a split bill. I guess they do not want to do the separate bills. This small Vietnamese restaurant was a disappointment.  Appetizers were delivered after the main dishes arrived.  Rice noodles were gummy and stuck together, making eating them a challenge.  The pho had weak flavor.   Pho La Jolla is convenient to the UCSD campus and does a brisk business, but I won't be back.  There are many better Vietnamese restaurants in San Diego. read more
