Been coming here since I was in middle school. This is a go to spot for Vietnamese food in the East Bay if your paying cash since the payment method is cash only. They have updated the interior quite a bit. A few of the same people that's been working in the past are still here which is nice. My most recent visit here was last December 2022. We ordered the Fresh Spring Rolls which in my opinion comes with the best dipping sauce. Stir the sauce before dipping. I also got the Seafood Rice Noodle Pho. The broth is just lovely. And lastly, we got the Grilled Shrimp & Beef over rice and ordered a side of Fried Shrimp Cake. The fried shrimp cake is very crunchy and delish. Local no frills Vietnamese restaurant :-). CASH ONLY! I love viet food from SJ but I'm not willing to drive that far! Pho - Tasty hot broth. The beef, chicken and seafood phos are really good! They give alot of noodles too. Rice plate: #55 the combo plate (shredded pork, shrimp cake, pork chops, and Chinese sausage) was amazeballs! The toppings were piled high on my plate. I was only able to eat 1/3 of the plate and had to take it togo. Fried egg rolls: My favorite appetizer from this place. Long egg rolls not those short little ones you can finish in one bite. They come out piping hot so give it a minute before chomping! Cost is reasonable! Large pho is ~ $15. The combo rice plate was ~ $16. Egg rolls ~ $9 for 4 pieces Ambience: Chill! I've been a regular customer for over ten years. Despite the 880 Freeway traffic snarls, was willing to make the trips because the pho was good and the price, reasonable. However, am having second thoughts to continue supporting the business as the broth quality has deteriorated due possibly to adding much more MSG in its preparation. We've been craving Pho and came here for dinner on a Saturday night around 7pm. When we got there, there were about 5 tables that were filled with patrons and we were immediately seated. This was our first time eating here even though we pass by it on at least once a week basis. The place is on the shopping area side of Seafood City and Rite Aid. There are plenty of parking spaces especially since it's across from Seafood City. We were given a menu and asked what we wanted to drink. We always order water with Pho because the broth is usually very flavorful and we do not drink that much while having Pho. I noticed that they have spicy sauces, soup spoons, regular spoons and forks, and little sauce plates right on your table. I'm not sure if that is safe considering COVID and it's variants ate still hanging around. Their menu has very extensive items but for a good old plain Pho with everything in it, it would be the #1 on the menu and it came in Large only. #2 is the same with everything in it but it has an extra ingredient of beef balls so this one only comes in medium for the same price of #1 at $13.30 a bowl. You know your food is about to come out when they give your table a plate full of vegetables that you can add to your Pho. The wait was only ten minutes for our Pho to arrive. The Pho were the perfect temperature and they were very generous with the meat and noodles in it. The broth is very flavorful as well. As always with Pho the large is huge and I was wishing that my son and I had shared one bowl because there was no way he and I can each finish their huge serving. We did end up taking the rest of our order "to go" and they give you the plastic containers to take your meal home with you. They have a unisex restroom and it's very small and clean. One thing that I didn't expect was no matter how high your order came up, you can only pay with CASH ONLY. This was the only thing that I didn't like as I do not carry a lot of cash with me. It's a good thing that Bank of America is in the same shopping complex. Pho Pasteur has made it's way into my pho game! Service is friendly and quick, portion sizes are large, prices are reasonable (although they increased their prices for 2018), and it is CASH only. It is located in the Alvarado Plaza Shopping Center, making parking easy. And majority of the time I've come here, there has been little to no wait. Food wise, I've had their pho and vermicelli, both of which were tasty. My boyfriend always orders their rice plate with the chicken wings, which are good! I recommend ordering! Overall, it's your average pho restaurant. Food and service are good for the most part and I love that it opens earlier than other pho places, but my only gripe is that it is slightly dirty here. The floors are wet, so watch your step! And sadly, the tables sometime have that weird towel smell... If you can look past that, Pho Pasteur can be a good alternative if your go-to is too crowded or closed for the day. read more

My pregnant Wife was craving a Vietnamese rice plate, so we did what all people do nowadays, browse Yelp. After going back and forth between a few restaurants, we chose this one. We called in and ordered a medium #29 ($12.25), which is the beef egg noodle soup and my wife ordered a #55 ($14.85) which is a rice plate that has the fried shrimp cake, Chinese sausage, pork chop and shredded pork. First, I'll go into the food itself. The #29 was bland with barely any taste. Portion size was good. My wife said her dish was good and she liked it. Portion size good as well. The main reason for my review is the price. When I walked in and told the cashier what I ordered, she tells me $34.51. This is when the alarm bells should have rang, but I didn't think much of it. As I got back into the car and drove off, I asked my wife who was in the car, how much each plate should have been. Before tax, it should have been $27.10 and with tax, right below $30. I am pretty upset I was overcharged by that much. I get it, businesses are struggling, but don't be dishonest! Charging me $4+ over what I should have paid is shady! I was taken here for Mothers Day dinner. It's hard to say which I enjoyed more, the wonderful hospitality along with excellent service or my delicious meal. I'm so glad I splurged and ordered their decadently chocolate mocha smoothie with pearl. Locals talked this place up as a staple of their younger years. I was disappointed. The Bun Bo Hue was bland. I never thought that was possible. The delightful pop of lemongrass and shrimp paste flavors was muted by an even weaker chili sauce. It was oily and unsatisfactory. Waters were never refilled and service never looked at the corner again. The place was less than half full, so I have very little wiggle room for sympathy. I have been frequenting this Pho joint since I was a child in elementary school. The pho has never failed me. They give you such large servings with plentiful herbs and bean sprouts. Even their chicken wings and rice plates are huge. I LOVE their avocado smoothie - a truly guilty pleasure that I order every time I come here. Get it. You won't regret it. They are also pretty nice people if you get to know them over the years. If you're looking for Pho, I believe they're better than Pho VN. But maybe the other items are the same/better over there? This place is a great pho restaurant in Union City. It's cash only, but it has some very tasty dishes. We get the vegetarian vermicelli bowl and the seafood pho. Both are very tasty. The portions are pretty large, we don't ever finish our own bowls. So whenever we go we just share something. The service is fast. It feels like we sit down, order our food and then 5 minutes later we are slurping our soups. It's a great place, that's quick and convenient. I'm a fan of this place. This Pho restaurant is in located across from Seafood City in Union City. Decently priced Pho! MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CASH THOUGH. This is a cash only establishment. Food: I've only really had their pho (either #1 or #2) but each time, it's not pricey and they give tons and tons of noodles for a medium sized bowl. I thought at first the medium sized bowl was actually a large sized bowl. The only thing interesting is they've recently changed to lemons instead of limes recently! The broth is quite flavorful and they do add also more meat then I was expecting. Service: People get to you super fast during dinner hours and the food comes out super fast as well. One of many many Pho places in this area and we have our favorites. This is not one of them unfortunately but still good to go. The Pho restaurant is decent but needs an upgrade badly and the plaza is not desirable for their parking. Is it me or these people can't drive here? This place is not for service but they do serve their soups fast and faster than their appetizers. Eh! They have forgotten our appetizers before. They always have a crowd inside but never a very long wait for a table and that is why we usually go here. I usually get #22 Wonton & pork slices with rice noodle soup. Broth is good but not enough veggies. My family usually gets their Pho Bo with flank and brisket. Their egg rolls are deep fried right but too much wrapper and flavor. Their spring rolls are pretty good. It's not the best in the area so I can't really agree with others. My rating would be 2.5 but have to rate it up. I have to question their cleaning of the tables as they use a really dirty wet cloth towel to clean multiple tables every time I come here. They need to change it often. We have been here a few times. If we are in the East Bay; we usually have a few of our "go to" restaurants. I notice that each time we come here; it's worse than the previous visit. This is our last time here. It was pouring rain and we had to run across the parking lot with our littles. The people don't yield or give pedestrians the right of way here. So, we got soaked! I'm not basing my review on that since it has nothing to do with this restaurant. When we walked in, it was so dirty! Most of the tables were empty; but, not clean....yet? My littles had to go to the restroom, and the three of us gagged and nearly threw up! It was filthier and smelled so rancid in there and barely any soap. Yuck! I seriously wanted to walk out; but, we had gone to Toppings a couple of miles away and they were out of chicken tocino....for the uptempt time. Of course, they want your order as soon as you walk into the restaurant (okay, a slight exaggeration...as soon as you are seated); but, when I exited the restroom and got back to the table they immediately followed us and took our order. I lost my appetite; but, sucked it up and ordered a large pho to share with the girls. Apparently my hubby wasn't feeling it either and just ordered a spring roll. When she walked away, he whispered, "We'll go somewhere else." The girls enjoyed their pho. They always do, so I'm pleased about that. Their prices seem to increase every time we come here and there are so many restaurants that serve decent pho, so we really don't need to come here anymore.. PHO-CKING GOOD I had a feeling that the title of my review would get a look. This place is close to my parents' house. It was recommended by my parents' contractor as he's Vietnamese. Pho Pasteur is located in the heart of "Manilatown" in Union City. During the times I've ate at Pho Pasteur it is very busy and I can see why due to the pho. What makes a tasteful pho? First the broth has to be clear not murky. A clear broth is not only a clean broth but also makes the ingredients in the soup flavorful. In addition a clear broth doesn't make the soup heavy. The other component of a good broth is the noodles and meat as they absorb the flavor is the broth. You can't have a good pho without the "offal" stuff like tendon and tripe. The offal in the pho isn't awful but tasty. The tendon adds a fatty texture in the broth while the tripe adds a chewy texture similar to noodles. If you're craving for pho due to a bad day or a hangover from the previous night sipping and eating pho at Pho Pasteur will make your feel "pho-cking" better. read more

Over the many times I've came to the plaza where this restaurant is located, my boyfriend has been dying to try. He's an advocate of going to restaurants without a review because he wants to make his own judgment. Well here we go buddy: First of all, parking is available. Located in a shopping plaza some days may be kind of a pain in the rear trying to find parking but there's always parking if you're willing to walk. Which hey, walking is good for you, especially if you're a foodie fatty. Secondly, the restaurant has a decent amount of seating. It's just distributed just enough space to separate you and has maximized its seating arrangements. Small parties are ok in this restaurant anything more than 8 people you might have to work something out for yourself. Customer service is good. Though the table busts are rather slow, they're fairly nice. I don't sense bad vibes for sure. How often do you get that from a Vietnamese restaurant right? Don't repeat that, only I can ask since I'm Vietnamese - just kidding cry baby. Here's why I gave it a terrible review: We ordered two bowls of Pho Dac Biet and Bo Vien: first and foremost, the size portions were pretty good. A lot of noodles and just enough meat I want to say. For $12.50 for a large, I don't agree. Though Bay Area as you know is rather expensive for pho but that's a wack price - I'm petty I know. The flavor was bland. It was like they filled the pot all water and no seasoning. Had such disappointment not even fish sauce, sugar, extra hoisin could save it. It tasted like banh pho in water. We took two bites and took it to go. After having to leave, we went home and we reboiled and seasoned the crap out of it. It was missing a lot of salt - let's just say that. I also ordered a side of eggrolls. I always eat eggrolls even if it's mediocre. Sadly to say, their eggrolls were super dry. Had no flavor to it either. Low key wanted to spit it out. There's a lot of pepper in the eggrolls. I know, this review is rather harsh. And maybe they had a bad day. But how could you start the day off so bad when literally it was only 12pm? It's a mistake or a trade off is when we're too lazy to drive 30 miles to Pho Hanoi for dinner. It was Sunday, after a long day of golf, tired and just wanted a good bowl of Pho, driving to SJ wasn't an option or preference. Pasteur was close by and so pho VN, but we decided not to go there again since the broth wasn't as good as before and it started to skim the food. Pho Pasteur was good last time, but yesterday was a disaster. - the price is $12.1 for a bowl of pho. - the meat was broken and small and tasteless. - the broth was so bland that my daughter had to add hoisin sauce, she left the whole small bowl, just ate the rare beef. - mommy ate the bun bo hue and she finished it in a short time. No meat, little noodles. I don't know what's with these VN restaurants, I think they have their own clientele which don't care about taste, quantity because we will not be back here again. I think these 2 pho places are not catered to VN people, but I did notice, it wasn't as crowded as it used to be... even non VN customers notice the decay in quality and quantity? These places still only take cash and with the prices like these, you need to bring at least $60 cash for 4 people. One thing I believe it's an insult and disrespectful to the customers when a Pho restaurant serves "beef crumbs" instead of real sliced beef. If you eat enough Pho you will notice sometimes you get the crumbs (broken small pieces of meat - normally at the bottom of their serving tray or bowl), either the preparer was lazy or try to save some money instead of getting new ones. Anyhow, since there are only 2 Pho restaurants and we're done with both, the only way we can have Pho is to go to SJ. If a bowl of Pho is bad with broth, meat and price, why 2 stars?
