I rarelt come to Pho Pasteur because of their ridiculously high prices and mediocre food. $13 for pork chop rice, $10.25 for a SMALL bowl of Pho, and $12.10 for a MEDIUM bowl of Pho. The worst part was charging $4.55 for a Salted Plum Drink.. the two salted plum prolly only cost .20centts and the can of Club Soda .50cents, yet they charge $4.55!! PHO-CKING GOOD I had a feeling that the title of my review would get a look. This place is close to my parents' house. It was recommended by my parents' contractor as he's Vietnamese. Pho Pasteur is located in the heart of "Manilatown" in Union City. During the times I've ate at Pho Pasteur it is very busy and I can see why due to the pho. What makes a tasteful pho? First the broth has to be clear not murky. A clear broth is not only a clean broth but also makes the ingredients in the soup flavorful. In addition a clear broth doesn't make the soup heavy. The other component of a good broth is the noodles and meat as they absorb the flavor is the broth. You can't have a good pho without the "offal" stuff like tendon and tripe. The offal in the pho isn't awful but tasty. The tendon adds a fatty texture in the broth while the tripe adds a chewy texture similar to noodles. If you're craving for pho due to a bad day or a hangover from the previous night sipping and eating pho at Pho Pasteur will make your feel "pho-cking" better. read more

Over the many times I've came to the plaza where this restaurant is located, my boyfriend has been dying to try. He's an advocate of going to restaurants without a review because he wants to make his own judgment. Well here we go buddy: First of all, parking is available. Located in a shopping plaza some days may be kind of a pain in the rear trying to find parking but there's always parking if you're willing to walk. Which hey, walking is good for you, especially if you're a foodie fatty. Secondly, the restaurant has a decent amount of seating. It's just distributed just enough space to separate you and has maximized its seating arrangements. Small parties are ok in this restaurant anything more than 8 people you might have to work something out for yourself. Customer service is good. Though the table busts are rather slow, they're fairly nice. I don't sense bad vibes for sure. How often do you get that from a Vietnamese restaurant right? Don't repeat that, only I can ask since I'm Vietnamese - just kidding cry baby. Here's why I gave it a terrible review: We ordered two bowls of Pho Dac Biet and Bo Vien: first and foremost, the size portions were pretty good. A lot of noodles and just enough meat I want to say. For $12.50 for a large, I don't agree. Though Bay Area as you know is rather expensive for pho but that's a wack price - I'm petty I know. The flavor was bland. It was like they filled the pot all water and no seasoning. Had such disappointment not even fish sauce, sugar, extra hoisin could save it. It tasted like banh pho in water. We took two bites and took it to go. After having to leave, we went home and we reboiled and seasoned the crap out of it. It was missing a lot of salt - let's just say that. I also ordered a side of eggrolls. I always eat eggrolls even if it's mediocre. Sadly to say, their eggrolls were super dry. Had no flavor to it either. Low key wanted to spit it out. There's a lot of pepper in the eggrolls. I know, this review is rather harsh. And maybe they had a bad day. But how could you start the day off so bad when literally it was only 12pm? Pho Pasteur was good last time, but yesterday was a disaster. - the price is $12.1 for a bowl of pho. - the meat was broken and small and tasteless. - the broth was so bland that my daughter had to add hoisin sauce, she left the whole small bowl, just ate the rare beef. - mommy ate the bun bo hue and she finished it in a short time. No meat, little noodles. I don't know what's with these VN restaurants, I think they have their own clientele which don't care about taste, quantity because we will not be back here again. I think these 2 pho places are not catered to VN people, but I did notice, it wasn't as crowded as it used to be... even non VN customers notice the decay in quality and quantity? These places still only take cash and with the prices like these, you need to bring at least $60 cash for 4 people. One thing I believe it's an insult and disrespectful to the customers when a Pho restaurant serves "beef crumbs" instead of real sliced beef. If you eat enough Pho you will notice sometimes you get the crumbs (broken small pieces of meat - normally at the bottom of their serving tray or bowl), either the preparer was lazy or try to save some money instead of getting new ones. Anyhow, since there are only 2 Pho restaurants and we're done with both, the only way we can have Pho is to go to SJ. If a bowl of Pho is bad with broth, meat and price, why 2 stars? You get a lot of beef, but only four shrimp, but the flavor is phenomenal. You also get a side of daikon, carrot, cucumber salad. It didn't seemed as "pickled" as I'm used to. This place takes me back to high school. Growing up in UC this place is super nostalgic for me. It was a cold foggy day and all I could think of was a piping hot bowl of pho. My hubby isn't a big soup fan and made an exception on this day for me (more like I dragged him out lol). We ordered the egg rolls which came out super fast and very hot. When in doubt, it's Pho Pasteur. Feeling something warm and soupy? Pho Pasteur. A friend is in town and wants to have dinner? Pho Pasteur. Pho dac biet xe lua (large bowl of pho) is a must-have off their menu. It comes with rare slices of steak, well-done brisket, flank, tendon and tripe, and it is well-worth its $11 price. The portion is so huge that you can get away with splitting the bowl if you're not too hungry. The service at Pho Pasteur is so fast that you need not order an appetizer because the food comes out steaming hot very shortly after you order. Knowing this, I still cannot help but order a plate of their goi cuon, fresh spring rolls with shrimp, pork, and the most flavorful dipping sauce made of hoisin sauce. Each order comes with four rolls, but after one, I am more than satisfied. If you're not feeling soup, the rice plates are another must-have. You can't go wrong with grilled pork chops over rice. For the most bang for your buck, try the grilled pork chop with shredded pork, and egg cake over rice. This pho restaurant is located in a supermarket area so it's in the perfect location for attracting customers to come over for a good bowl of pho. This restaurant is small but it's a reasonable sized place for family functions. You could bring a lot of family members here and have them all seated next to one another. It's just a really good place to come with good company to enjoy a hot bowl of broth and noodles. You're getting a good amount of pho for the price you're paying here. They actually give a decent amount too, so it's definitely worth it! I would say they also give a decent portion of meat compared to the broth and the noodles. This is always good because combined with the broth, you're getting a very nice helping of beef flavor. The desserts are pretty good too! I tried their Che desserts and it was pretty flavorful. Though they are no comparison to the better places in San Jose, If Bun Bo Hue Anh Nam is a 5, Pho Kim Long is a 4, I'd rank their BBH a solid 3. They give generous proportions, and have pretty much all the key ingredients to make a decent Bun Bo Hue. Only thing lacking is the pork blood that I usually like in my BBH. 1st review of 2014!. My go to pho place when I'm back at home. I've been going here since I was a little kid, and not much has changed in the past decade or so. The restaurant has been through a few changes and renovations the past few years, most of which were exterior. The inside hasn't changed much at all. They only upgraded the bathroom so it isn't AS janky as before. But it's still pretty ugly. All this is besides the point. The restaurant has ample seating, even when it gets busy. I've tried many things from the menu from pho to the rice plates. I always fall back onto the number 1, the Pho Special Large. The pho broth is flavorful; there's enough flavor, but it's not overbearing or anything. They give quite a lot of meat and noodles. Most places seem to skimp out on one or the other, but not here. Rice plates are also pretty good here. I used to always get some sort of fried rice here whenever I wasn't feeling pho. Their chicken wings are also really juicy, but super greasy at the same time. They're normally pretty good on service, but there have been times when I have to call them over to order. Still service is a solid 7.5/10 Overall, still my go to place for pho whenever I am home.
