People leaving bad reviews don't realize that there IS NOT one standard way to make and serve pho. Although it originated it Vietnam, the Chinese, Koreans, and other ethnic groups have introduced their own variations. I used to hate pho because the few times I had it was when a Japanese prepared it for me. It wasn't until I met a Vietnamese who urged me to try it once again. She prepared pho and invited me over, and it was AWESOME! Her in-laws are Chinese and also make a variation of pho. I have since moved back to Redding and miss my little Vietnamese friend inviting me over for pho :( Pho Saigon is the closest I can get to that, and they do a great job in preparing their pho. I imagine many Asian ingredients are tough to get in Redding, but they manage to make a better pho than I could. The service has always been great, too! The owners are really nice. Their English is a little limited, but they are patient with it, as long as you are. The chicken, beef, and shrimp is tasty!!! I recommend the chicken or shrimp for starters. Beef pho can be greasy. Aaaah, Redding has Pho! The Pho was good though, i tried an egg noodle variation that had beef and also some seafood, i really like the whole thing, including the broth. Of course I add some of the typical hoison sauce and sirracha (spicy sauce) to customize it to my taste. I think my friend ordered a chicken type pho and really liked it, she even took some home, so that's a good sign for how big the portions are and how much she enjoyed it. The prices were okay, kinda high compared to what i remember of San Jose pho bowls that would be as low as $5. I believe our orders were around $7.75 for a Large bowl. Wish I wouldn't have wasted my time and money at this place. We ordered for pick up and was told 20 minutes, got there 30 minutes later and the food wasn't ready. Then, came the sticker shock- $42 for rice, noodle soup, and fresh rolls and none of which had adequate portions for those prices. The broth in the soup wasn't very flavorful (almost just water and salt) and the fried rice had an overwhelming amount of black pepper in it which we found peculiar for fried rice. The spring rolls were very lackluster, just shrimp and iceberg lettuce. I didn't think I really liked Pho until I came here. Sure, plenty of Thai Restaurants in town serve it, including the very good restaurant Champa Garden, but I'm not sure I really "got it." That's all changed! Things I like: -Huge variety of different soups. Pho isn't only made one way. You can choose the way you want it, and they're all good. -Very flavorful food. And the rice noodles are just the perfect texture. Pho with thinly cut beef is my favorite. - Reasonable portions. A small bowl of Pho is plenty for me. Whenever I've ordered pho elsewhere it's come in a giant vat and it's been too much to handle. I haven't had that problem here. -Relatively quick service. -Reasonable prices All in all, I think it's the best Pho you'll get in Redding. They also have various rice dishes and other Vietnamese food, but I've never tried them. The soup is too good. This authentic Vietnamese restaurant was absolutely amazing. It has been very hard to find a good pho place since moving to Redding, but this little restaurant definitely exceeds expectations. I'm in town for business. I looked up Pho and this place looked legit. But I was so disappointed. I get it, bc of Covid and bc this isn't the most diverse town, they didn't seem to be busy or may not even be getting too much business. But let me tell you how awful my experience was. I ordered the small steak pho. They gave me only sprouts, a lemon and 3 strands of cilantro. No basil. How does one eat pho without basil? Then she gave me a small portion of hoisin and sriracha in the tiny dipping plate. I asked if I could have more sauces but she told me to finish that first and then she'll bring me more. WTH?! The small portion is basically a kid size. The noodles were less than what you would get in a cup of noodle cup. 4-5 bites and you're done. Smh. I ordered the A3 5 piece chicken wings, which were outrageously over priced. 13.99 for 5 chicken wings? I ordered that to go. She tied it up so I couldn't check so when I got to the car I opened it up and it wasn't what was on the menu. So I went inside explaining to her that what I saw on the picture in the menu is what I was expecting in the to go container. What she gave me wasn't the same thing. She kept telling me the picture was different, hence, that's why I brought it back in. That's called false advertisement. And she tried to be slick about it. So I asked her to give me a refund. I'm adding a star because the service has improved a little (not a lot), and the beef & tendon pho I had yesterday was amazing. Might have even been five stars if not for the fact that when it was time to settle up, the waitress/owner informed me that credit/debit cards were subject to a $15 minimum. She finally agreed to run my debit card for an additional $1.00 charge. Maybe that added star seems generous, but the pho really did knock me out. A new addition to the decor since the last time I was here (it had been a long time, because Teacher Lady won't eat pho) are two paintings of nude Vietnamese women. These paintings are the Vietnamese version of those Mexican paintings of topless Aztec maidens on black velvet. Anyway, a pair of Asian women in the restaurant repeatedly asked the waitress/owner if the painting are of her. This can be take one of two ways: 1. It's meant as a complement. The painting are a little cheesy, but the women in them are very attractive. 2. It's meant as an insult. As in: "Waitress lady, are you a porn model, too? Do you also whack off your male customers for tips?" Based on my experience, I'm going with the latter. I used to have a friend who has an Asian wife with whom it was impossible to enjoy a meal at a restaurant because she was endlessly abusive to waitresses. (I detest people who are mean to waitresses -- I think it marks them as vain, cruel, power-tripping assholes.) Anyway, it got to the point where I finally had to tell my friend that we weren't really interested in dining out with them anymore because his wife's shitty behavior was obnoxious and embarrassing. In her defense, he said that it was a cultural thing. In Mandarin culture, he explained, waitressing is one step above prostitution. Waitresses see to the bodily needs of men who are total strangers by giving them food. They are thus viewed with scorn, especially by other women. (This was all meant to sway me via the path of cultural non-judgementalism and liberal guilt: After hearing the explanation, I was supposed to agree: "Who are we to judge?") Okay, fine. I've been going to Pho Saigon for over two years since my husband introduced it to me and it continues to be our top choice for Pho. There was finally an article in the local paper that gave Pho Saigon its much deserved credit. Because of that, we saw a jam-packed lunch time. My husband had the Bun Bo Hue (Spicy beef noodle soup). I ordered it for him without the blood jello. The waitress stated that "Americans" don't eat that and pork legs so they don't put it in. I tried the broth and it so tasty! It had a lot of depth in the flavor. I didn't like that they used skinny vermicelli noodles instead of fat ones. Also, they didn't include shredded cabbage for the noodles as a garnish. I ordered the Pho Dac Biet. When the plate of garnishes came out, there was tons of cilantro but no basil. I requested some basil but that waitress again said that "Americans" don't eat it so they don't serve it. Wtf? Really?! The basil in the broth adds another wonderful depth of flavor. I feel kinda bad giving this place two stars because of the situation (not being in a big city, not having Asian grocery store/supplier nearby), but I have to do it because I want to tell it as it was. Even though I have been spoiled by some nice SoCal Vietnamese establishments, I still think Pho Saigon can do better. It just seems to me that they just didn't try very hard to make good food. 1. It's expensive. I got a small pho, which at other pho restaurants, is enough for me. However, at Pho Saigon, the small pho was tiny. Maybe good for a 5yo but not me. In addition, my small chicken pho had about 4 pieces of thinly sliced chicken meat -disappointing! 2. No Basil! As other has mentioned, the raw vegs plate doesn't come with basil... what? 3. Veg eggroll was lacking in filling, the roll was so sad. The rice paper caked into a chunk because a lot of it was just unused. It was not served with peanut sauce, as I originally thought, but rather a liquid sweet/sour sauce more suitable for fried eggrolls. 4. But worst of all, the broth! I know I know, you can't compare chicken broth to beef broth, but man this broth was sooooo bland. It was as if they had dumped some chicken stock into the pot with fried onion bits. No complexity whatsoever, tasted pre-made and doesn't have that sweet savoriness you get from homemade chicken broth. I know putting hoisin sauce in pho is like putting ketchup in spaghetti, but I was dumping that hoisin into the bowl like it was no one's business and still it was lame tasting. Our meal, 1 small chicken, 1 large chicken, and 1 veg egg rolls (with 3 rolls) came to 24 dollars. Not worth it at all IMO. read more

The restaurant is hidden in the corner, but a large sign is visual on the street. Pho in Redding? What a blessing! I grew up in Weaverville, so Redding is always the place to go for anything. I've been living in southern California for the past couple years, and in that time have gotten exposed to the glorious thing that is Vietnamese food. I was hesitant about trying pho when I came back to visit, but after getting it almost once a week, I was starting to get withdrawals! I was pleasantly surprised with the food here. The pho was actually very good! The Thai iced tea wasn't bad either, and even the boba was decent. However, I went in for lunch after the first time coming, and they had somehow already run out. That was a bit disappointing. Prices are more than I'm used to, but that's to be expected. Having a place to go for pho when I visit my parents is more than I could hope for. read more

I had a good bowl of pho. The plate of adds was very full and the service is very good. The lady who served us, had a hard time speaking English and communicating with us. I think this is the best bowl of pho in Redding. There are a few Thai restaurants which serve a passable pho, but the broth does not have the right flavors like Pho Saigon. If you haven't tried pho, it is a must for; cold days or if you have a head cold. If it is the latter, make sure you get plenty of extra napkins. Your head cold will drain through your eyes, nose and anywhere else that you don't expect it. By the time you leave, your breathing passage will be clear. This beats any cold medicine. read more

For Redding, this is as good as Vietnamese food gets. Pho Saigon is a wonderful family-run hole-in-the-wall, with large portions of good food at reasonable prices. The husband and wife team working there are sweet folks who remember their customers when they return. The pho noodle soup is as good as it is in the South Bay. The seafood pizza/crepe is large, tasty, but quite oily, so don't order this one if you prefer dry food. The reviewer that gave this restaurant one star admits that she left the restaurant after determining that they didn't serve the food she likes. **She never actually tasted the food.** Draw your own conclusions on the value of her review. As usual, I ordered a vermicelli bowl with bbq pork and egg roll. The sauce on the pork was a little heavy, but was very good. There was a lot of pork also and the bowl itself was large. Lots of vegetables and not too many noodles like some places. The egg roll was kinda small but good. The wife had a seafood soup which was also very good. The spring rolls made with rice paper were excellent. Shrimp and a little pork with some green lettuce, bean sprouts and I think basil. Better than most I've had. The coconut water was very good with lots of young coconut meat. It is little more expensive than most places I've been too, but it seems everything is expensive up here in Redding. read more
