I'm surprised I had never heard of this place or eaten here until COVID-19 hit. I typically go to Pho Duyen Mai or Phuong Trang for some Pho Ga (chicken pho), but with restaurant closures, I needed to find a new place that provided take-out/delivery. This place popped up on my Yelp app with great reviews and take-out orders through Yelp. After ordering, my food was ready in 30 mins. I was so happy to find that the food here is really delicious! I ordered the chicken pho, pho w/ steak, and the spring rolls. Both bowls of pho had such flavorful broths. Also, the spring rolls with peanut sauce were some of the best spring rolls I've ever had. Reluctant to write this review because the service was great and the pho broth was tasty but the "rare meat" was essentially raw. I went in around 8:20 on a Sunday night to pick up my take out order; the number two and a Thai tea. Brought it home and was alarmed at how "rare" the meat was. Thought I would give it a chance and mix it into the broth to possibly "cook" it a little? Nothing happened to the meat instead I had to take the "rare meat" out bc it changed the color of my broth to bright pink. Half way into eating my pho I had to stop because the color of the broth was intensely pink and after examining the "rare meat" and discussing it with my boyfriend I came to the conclusion that the meat was indeed raw. Maybe I missed some description somewhere stating that the number two is extremely above and beyond rare? Such a shame because I had such high hopes! read more

Wonderful customer service; the staff are so sweet and friendly. They always made sure our cups were never empty. I had one of the pho and it was delicious. The broth before adding in the sauce and seasoning tasted ahhh-maaazinggg! My Thai tea was very delicious as well. A few of my other friends ordered pho and I notice that the portion of noodles were a lot. Maybe too much, but def worth the price you pay! The restaurant itself is clean and spacious and I would say ok for big groups of no more than 10 ppl. They have a great menu with a variety of Vietnamese food to choose from. I have been coming to Pho Sao Bien for over 10 years and their delicious dishes, friendly service and clean setting never disappoints! Their pho broth is perfectly balanced, steaming hot with fresh cuts of meat. I also like that they serve fresh rice noodles, it makes a big difference! I typically start with the shrimp and pork spring rolls or some crispy egg rolls. Their vermicelli bowls are tasty too with fresh herbs, bean sprouts, grilled pork and egg rolls. This place isn't great. Spring rolls are okay, albeit a bit smaller than usual. The pho though - sucks. Broth is weak at best and tastes old. The meat isn't fresh, and you can tell by its gumminess. The noodles have been out for a while - they didn't cook with the broth, so they're kind of soggy and cold. Feels like a legit Viet place, but it falls flat. I got the $5.95 #11 Steak and Brisket Pho, took a sip of the steamy beef broth, and...BAAAAM! :D Whoa! WTF? Grandma? Are you back there cooking this delicious pho soup? Or did these assholes steal my Grandma's Pho recipe? Probably not...but my mind warped back to the 80s and 90s when young Chun P enjoyed his Grandma's yummy homemade Pho. EXCEPT for the brisket, don't order it! Its pretty much just chunks of fat. Grandma, born and raised in Vietnam, wound never put that crap in our Pho. Perfection, no need to add lime or hoison sauce to broth, as one would not add Tabasco or A1 sauce to a $50 steak at Morton's or Ruth Chris(Unless you're my classless tacky Dad). I love going here for the Bun. It is a rice vermicelli noodle with a mild chili broth, veggies and your choice of meat. I usually get the bbq pork and shrimp. Pho-tastic!! Great spot with parking lot and tons of yummy food. And it's right in PB! What else can you ask for? There are only two vietnamese places in PB and this one is definitely the winner. Their menu is extensive. It seems to be a family run place. Service is lightning fast. You pick, you order and in less than 5 minutes, your order will be in front of you. Big giant portion of it! This place wins in every way. For a good $6 , you can get a massive bowl of pho! For $1.50 more, you can have double the meat! Or spend one more dollar and go for a large bowl. Two of us shared the regular pho and bun salad. There were so much left overs! First time around we did pho and bun! Pho- I got the special beef. It was light, tasty and all around delicious. Bun- Bun salad with shrimp and fried tofu. The sauce has peppers in it. Gives it a nice little kick. This was a little more on the pricier side of the menu but still great. Second time was the take out- I had the pork chop com diet (rice plate) with pork skin and soup to go. And extra noodles on the side for $1.50. Rice- harder than rock pebbles and stone crab claws. It was not edible! Grilled pork strips - they gave me pork strips instead of the pork chop that I ordered. Oh well. It was still tasty though. And that pork skin noodle salad was kind of amazing. They also forgot to give me the soup but I'm glad they didn't forget my extra noodle order. Over all, this place is good. Cheap good food with fresh ingredients. They are perfect when dining in. I've never experienced such a happy Vietnamese staff that was delighted to see my face as I walked into the restaurant. From then on it was great service! On to the pho.....I thought it was ok. It wasn't bad, it just didn't blow my stand over, you know? I guess I'm just spoiled with Pho Hoa and their deep rich stocky broth. I thought the broth lacked in flavor and the noodles were a bit hard, but towards the end they softened up. The basil and bean sprouts were fresh, which is a pet peeve of mine, so that's good. I got my pho in record time - Fresh cooked noodles. My biggest pet peeves when I get pho is when the noodles are all stuck together and takes the shape of the bowl and I have to manually seperate them. This place does not let the cooked noodles sit in a bowl to melt. - Private parking lot. About 8 spots - Good location. Close to Trader Joe's - Natural lighting. Plenty of windows and ceiling sun lighting. - Clean. Including bathrooms - TV and music. To watch commercials while listening to the radio. Cons - I can't think of any. Satisfying, but not memorable. Yes, I'm spoiled because I've had many a great bowls of Phos in the Bay Area, especially in San Francisco and San Jose, where the Vietnamese population is ginormous. So yes, I would have to compare this Pho from that Pho...that's Pho sure. Again, have to quickly mention that this was the wifey's pick as she found the spot via Yelp app on the iPhone. It looked promising enough with plenty of good reviews and a 4 star average rating. This was strictly a spur-of-the-moment decision as we were enjoying Ocean Beach. Traffic was pretty congested on a Friday and it took us a while to get here since it's located on a busy strip of Ocean Beach. Upon arrival, we thought the place was closed since the parking lot was bare. But quickly figured out it was still early so the lunchtime crowd hasn't materialized yet. Twas to our advantage as the place wasn't packed. First impressions were cute, quaint and promising. The colors were bright and not your typical colors you'd expect from a Vietnamese joint. I guess it blended well in this neighborhood. Noticed the wall of pictures from locals and regulars, I assumed. They must have something great going on here, I thought. Service was friendly and efficient, but only from the younger gentleman working here. The older gentleman was grumpy, deliberate and inattentive. You ask him a question and the reply is crickets. AWKWARD! Maybe he didn't speak English, perhaps? On to the Pho since that's what we ordered. The broth is different from what I'm used to and it has a lot of tanginess and sourness to the flavor. There's a hint of Lemongrass and a vinegary kick that's a little off-putting for my tastebuds. My youngest son had the same reaction so I wasn't the only one. It's definitely a sharp, strong bite that is not what I typically expect from a Pho. I usually slurp my broth empty which is a sign of a good broth, but I couldn't finish this one. I live in City Heights and my area is known for good Vietnamese food but I believe that this pho shop has better pho. The pho tastes just like my moms. Before even digging in I knew it would be good. Nope... Wanted to try this place out to hopefully find a new "go to" Pho joint... but I didn't find one here. This place was empty on a Saturday night at 6:15, so that was the 1st bad sign. The parking is cramped as there are 6 spots. The food is sub par. I ordered the #1 XL bowl of pho with out Tripe, I hate tripe. Of course the bowl came with extra tripe. Strike 1. The broth has an odd color. I have had many bowls of pho none were this yellowish color. Its supposed to be more dark brown. Lacked the depth of flavor of a good broth.Strike 2 The bahn mi sandwich had chicken bones in it.. Not 1 but many.... I'm talking 5-6 separate pieces of bones. Good thing I didn't give that to my 2 year old.. yikes. Strike 3. You're out... The first time I came here will also be my last.. When you see the lack of attention to detail with it comes to the chicken bones and the bad broth, I would bet the same lack of attention to detail is there in the back in the kitchen. My Laotian coworker introduced me to a variety of Asian dishes, including Vietnamese noodle soup, or "fa". I was so excited when I discovered Pho Sao Bien right down the street from my house in PB! The staff is awesome and my to go orders are ready in less than 5 minutes. The aromatic pho is great for lunch or dinner. When I moved here about a month ago, the only Pho restaurant I knew of was about a 25 minute drive away in Mira Mesa. I decided to search for some nearby places on Yelp and this is what I came up with. This is one of my favorite Pho restaurants in this area and it beats 99% of the ones in San Jose (where I'm from). The Thai Iced Tea is standard, they don't put whip in it like some of the other random Pho restaurants. The Vietnamese Iced Coffee is served so its brewing as you receive it. The Pho menu wasn't too extensive, although it served Rice and Vermicelli dishes and had one of those "Create-Your-Own-Pho" menu/guides for newbies to Pho. The main thing I notice about this place is that they actually make an effort to REFILL YOUR WATER and the portions are quite generous for the price. They don't skimp out on the noodles or meat. The broth is more flavorful than most Pho restaurants I've visited and it has a slight welcoming feel from all the customer polaroids posted on the wall at the entrance. Considering this is about a 5 minute drive from me (I'm an off-campus student at UCSD), this is the Pho joint I frequent the most. Was craving egg rolls and came here around 5:30 on a week night last week. Ordered the 6 egg rolls along with a rice noodle dish. THOROUGHLY DISAPPOINTED. The egg rolls were not made with wonton wrappers, and were made with rice paper, which at other places is delicious. However, this place had an off ratio of wrapper to meat... too much wrapper. I LOVE Pho Sao Bien for my pho fix. I have tried other places and the quality of food in a quick time frame is really what wins me over here. The staff is friendly, greets you upon coming in the door and approaches your table within minutes with fresh water, menus and to answer any questions. I typically get the pho with rare steak with a starter of fried tofu. The peanut sauce that comes with the piping hot tofu is awesome, great consistency and great flavor. There are about 10 pieces in an appetizer, so it definitely works for two. The pho itself comes in a giant bowl that looks like it could satisfy two people (which i'm sure it can). They provide you with the sprouts, jalapenos, basil, hot sauces and anything else you can imagine to put into the soup, meat included. I find this place to have the best quality for what you pay, as well as being better than the rest around town. I would recommend this place to anyone. They do take credit cards, have a small parking lot out front and you can call orders in to-go! read more
