Well this is a pho restaurant but not many people are ordering pho I tell you that. Majority of the patron eating here are getting bun bo hue and so did I! It's a very small space, and usually pretty full on the weekends with who I'm guessing are regulars. Pho Tay Do is located in the same area as LA Burger, and is the epitome of a hole in the wall restaurant. The lot is small and unassuming, but parking isn't ever an issue for me. My go to for Bun Bo Hue! I love their Bun Bo Hue! Their service is fast. They are a family owned restaurant. There is one waitress there who is the sweetest. The only English she speaks is directly related to her job as a waitress, but she is a dear. I work close by and, anytime, I crave soupy noodles (all the time!), I go to Pho Tay Do. Amazing BBH and is so close to where I live. Why haven't I eaten here before? Came here for lunch and of course got a large BBH (9.89$). One bite and I was blown away by the amazing flavor of their broth, meats and noodles. When they say large on their menu they really meant it. Their large bowl of BBH is huge and super filling. However, after eating their large bowl, I could have definitely throw down another one because it was so good. I also tried their Bun Thi Nuong (8.59$) and it was also super flavorful and definitely highly recommended. Please try these two if you come here because you can't really go wrong with either one. One of my favorite things to eat during the winter is Bun Bo Hue (Spicy Beef Noodle Soup) and this place has one of the best in Dallas. The restaurant is pretty typical on the lines of Vietnamese Restaurants, but luckily many of the workers are friendly and they speak English. I loved the flavor of the broth and it had a very good balance of spiciness to it. My friend also got their dried noodle dish and it looked amazing- loved the presentation skills. Only down side is that I wouldn't recommend a friend here for pho. Their pho was very very basic and bland. I used to work near this restaurant and on one occasion, I came in for a grilled pork dish. It was good, but sweeter than I normally like, and given the vast array of Vietnamese options around this area, I didn't return for a while. After hearing about the Bun Bo Hue, I decided to come back and was glad that I did! As other have mentioned, this place is known for its Bun Bo Hue. No to be confused with Pho, this soup is noticeably darker, spicier, and to me, has a lot more flavor. I found the flavors to be quite similar to pork broth ramen compared to pho. If you're really hungry, get the large, otherwise, I think the normal portion is more than suffice. If it's cold outside and you're looking for something comforting, or if you just want to see what all the hype is about for their BBH, I can't think of a better place around to try it out. read more

In the past when I came here, I always got pho but recently I've made the change to always get Bun Bo Hue. I'm not an expert on Viet food but if everyone says it's good, i always see people ordering it, and I think it's delicious... it's definitely good. In one week, I went here 3 times... yes, it's that good. Since it's so cold out there, it's the best time to have it! I've only had their bun bo hue here.. maybe had their cha gio (fried egg rolls) but that's it. I come here for just one thing. It has just the right amount of spiciness and flavor to it. Not too much satay and not too much fat floating around either. It always hits the spot. Can't say too much about the ambience of the place. It literally is a hole in the wall. They could work on the decor but when you have constant customers, where's the need? They do need to hire more employees because when it's busy, it's pretty chaotic. I've referred some friends and they've fallen in love with it too! I don't think I've had any friend, Vietnamese and non-Vietnamese friend dislike this place. read more

The previous owner of this place did a very good job at providing great customer service. When you ordered a bowl of Bun Bo Hue, they would serve a full bowl; it had a lot of meat, cha lua, quyet, and gio heo. But now after the new owner took over the business, they served less in a bowl, and price of the bowl is more, and their service is not that good. Best Bun Bo Hue in town, period. Unfortunately the place itself now reeks of cigarette smell, probably due to the proximity of the cigar shop, which means we cannot eat in (can't tolerate that smell). The takeout is perfect though - everything is packed nicely, and travels home well. Their BBH is really good. We didn't get some of the internal cuts (such as liver) this time - not sure why, could be a supply issue, or maybe they thought we are not ethnic and would not like off cuts. I'm obsessed with their bun bo hue, which is their number seller! If you've never eaten here before, the first dish you should try is just that. It's a spicy traditional Vietnamese noodle soup with thin slices of marinated and boiled beef shank, chunks of oxtail, pig knuckles, and small blocks of congealed pig blood, which looks like a cross between chocolate and tofu. Fresh, raw vegetables are then placed on top. If you don't like spicy food, you can always request for it to be milder. I highly recommend this dish. The reason why I gave this restaurant a four star rating is because of the smell. The place is dirty and unhygienic, so if you want eat their food in a better environment, order their dishes to-go and enjoy them in the comfort of your home! read more

This was my second visit here. On my first visit I had their pho (beef noodle soup) and I vowed not to come back. After telling everyone about my experience they told me that I should have gotten the bun bo hue as that is their best dish. So when a friend asked me to have lunch with her here I decided I would give it a second chance. When we arrived the place was almost a full house. We got the last table which had to be cleaned off before we could sit. We ordered some of their pork egg rolls ($2.49 for 2) and two bun bo hue bowls ($6.29 for a small and $6.99 for a large). Our egg rolls and our bun bo hue came at the same time. I figured egg rolls were an appetizer but what they hey? I guess it's our fault for not telling them we wanted it out first. The egg rolls were not great whatsoever. We took one bite and disposed of the rest. The shell looked old and stale and tasted stale. The pork inside was not much better. It lacked flavor and, quite honestly, I make far superior eggrolls at home myself. The bun bo hue did not live up to its reputation in my eyes. It comes with some lime, shredded red cabbage, basil and bean sprouts on the side. The broth lacked flavor and we had to add some more fish sauce. It was not spicy at all. I love spicy food and know what spicy tastes like. It was not spicy. The assortment of meat was great, however. There was coagulated pigs blood, pigs feet, beef and what I believe to be pork sausage. I dipped my meat in some siracha and hoisen sauce for more flavor. The meat with the siracha and hoisen sauce made the dish much more tolerable. So second shot was a bust. Pho Tay Do was my very first experience with Vietnamese food, and thankfully I was with people who knew what to get. Go with what has already been said and get the Bun Bo Hue. This has now become my favorite soup to eat and I'll definately be driving all the way over here during the Fall and Winter to take some home. As delicious as everything is, from the beef and sausage to the noodles and generous toppings, what makes bun bo hue so good is the broth. It is unlike anything I have tried before, and when you find out the ingredient list, you'll know why. From what I've learned, I know the broth alone has 20-30 ingredients, half of which I'd never find in a normal grocery store. You can't come here without getting it, but beware it can be very spicy -- and some days even more so. Out of preference, I order mine with no blood -- but one day I'll have to try it with. If you get takeout, the cook will very convenienty give you a separate container for the broth, and another for the meats, noodles, veggies and herbs. This way you can fix it at home and have it sit in the fridge longer than a day, but most importantly so the noodles do not get soggy. I've tried the spring rolls and fried egg rolls here and they were good but not amazing, I like getting them to accompany my soup. The egg rolls could be a bit more oily than they have to be. If you're here and not feeling like eating soup then try the charbroiled pork with vermicelli noodles - it is good as well. Very flavorful, but light and refreshing at the same time with the cucumber and herbs. I rate 4/5 stars only for the food I mentioned above -- so my rating is not representative of the overall menu. The service and atmosphere are typical of a hole-in-the-wall joint (of any ethnicity), that isn't to say it was bad, only that communication could be a minor issue. If you come here, you have to try the bun bo hue! It's one of the best (if not the best--though some of my friends would beg to differ) bun bo hue places in North Texas, and it's super affordable. They use very fresh ingredients and herbs and the flavor is really authentic. The beef is stewed to soft, fall-apart-in-your-mouth perfection with just the right amount of fat, and the soup is loaded with a ton of other goodies like pork feet, pork blood jelly (it's actually really good!!), Vietnamese sausage, etc. Sometimes it's a little too spicy but most of the time it's just right. Pro-tip: skim some of the red-orange oil off the surface if you think it's too spicy. Oh, and another pro-tip: if you ask them to add a little more noodle they won't charge you extra, but if you ask for extra noodles in a bowl to the side then they will. The extra-large size is huge though. When you first walk in the smell might throw you off a little. I think it might smell like smoke since people do smoke outside occasionally? Service is also average: it's great on days/times where there's not many people but pretty bad when they're really busy. However, the owner of the place is really sweet and seems to genuinely care about his customers. You can tell he really cares and is very hard-working. The look of the restaurant is also pretty standard/leaves a little to be desired/family-owned vibe but personally I think it adds to the authenticity of the meal. No gimmicks here! read more
