Pho Vietnam was one of the only places with broth open for lunch on a Sunday in the area, so Pho Vietnam it was. The owner was super nice and asked me if I needed an extra container to pour broth and noodles into, and the portions were quite good. I got a standard pho dac biet, and it was enough to feed two people. The interior of this place is pretty small and has your standard sticky accoutrements, but hey, no frills. I always appreciate that. The broth was not super rich and came out piping hot, and the noodles were neither clumpy nor hard. The amount of meat was really quite crazy. Will be back! read more

Walked by yesterday and decided to try this place. My brother has been in the hospital and this week was trying beef pho with other restaurants. I ordered the beef pho and the pork and spring rolls with rice plate. The broth was very flavorful and you could smell the aromatic of the spices. The service was quick and professional and helpful. It had a tasty broth and the chicken was tender along with the noodles. Cute pho restaurant with very nice owners. The pho was rich in beef flavor and the meat was nice and soft. I ordered a well done flank, brisket, and beef balls. The broth was very beefy and tasty. I don't think they use msg so the flavor is real and not as salty but I didn't mind because I add my own sauces which include enough salt and spice. I've been here a number of times over the years when visiting SFO. Mainly because I really enjoy Vietnamese food and this place has been consistently average. I guess I keep hoping they step up their game a little bit. First off they have some knock off sriracha sauce from Dollar General and hoisin sauce that probably comes in a five gallon bucket. If they are cutting corners there, you can only imagine what else they cut corners on. Additionally, their prices are too high for what you get. A bowl of pho is $19.95 and like I said, it's average. Unfortunately the service is even worse. Not once did a server check on me during my meal. When I was finished, I had to walk in the kitchen to get someone's attention. Chose chicken broth which had depth and didn't just taste like plain bone broth. Came with a full quart container, box of noodles with green onions, parsley and fried onion, a generous amount, as well as a full bag of pho veggies. Came out to just over $15 after tax. This is the most expensive pho place I've seen in the city but I will gladly purchase again. Rice paper wrapped with veggies, vermicelli noodles, and shrimp then served with a peanut sauce. The eggrolls are on the small side but it also pretty good. I ordered the shrimp garlic noodle. While the taste was pretty good, it was more on the salty side. The service was a little slow but understandable. There was only one server working the whole time we were there. All you need is a bowl of chicken pho. My friend lives in Sac and this was one of her favorite places. She brought us here and all of us got the chicken pho. I love how simple the menu is, it's literally only one page which makes it easier to make a decision. We got lucky in getting a table before the lunch crowd came in. Broth is super tasty and warms your soul on a Sunday morning. I usually am the type to finish my bowl of pho but there was a LOT of noodles and I actually had leftovers. If only this place was closer to SF so that I can come here more often, for now it has to be a stop on my way through Sacramento. read more

They reopened 7/5! I'd never been there but my GF said she'd been there a bunch a while back. I showed up around 2p to get my usual meal of Pho and Imperial Rolls. Their imperial rolls are a little different in that they're chicken instead of pork&shrimp like most places make em. They also use eggroll wrappers instead of the rice paper wrappers so they're not the way I prefer them but they were still tasty. They showed up with an accompaniment of lettuce, rice noodles, mint, carrots and fish sauce - very tasty. I always put the chili garlic sauce in the fish sauce for that kick, I recommend you try that if you haven't already. I got the Dac Biet aka the bowl of everything. Their broth was good but it could've actually been a tad saltier. The star of the show was their brisket - it was perfect and really truly great. I also really liked that they sliced their tendon cuts thinner than most places, made it easier to eat, also just the right texture for me. All in all, I'd call it a win. read more

I walk along Polk a lot and am disappointed to say I've never stopped in to Pho Vietnam until a friend started Yelping for local noodle places nearby around Nob Hill. It's a small, no-frills hole-in-the-wall with some artwork on the walls and , easy-to-miss if you're not looking for it, but you shouldn't miss it: this is some good, hearty pho run by a family! Our order was taken and water glasses were filled by a determined mother-daughter duo. I ordered the #12 (slices of rare steak and beef meatballs) and my friend ordered the #13 (slices of rare steak). I loved the beef balls but as mentioned in other reviews, they were cut into quarters. The noodles were a perfect thickness and length--they were pretty easy to slurp. The soup flavor was basic but got the job done, warming our stomachs. It's a bit pricey for pho, but given the location, I'm not sure what people expect. There's quite a bit of seating and it'd be good for groups. I'll be back to try the other dishes--they have cool drinks and desserts, as well as rice plates and non-pho noodle dishes. read more

Pretty tasty, I come here on weekends sometimes and there's a normal flow of people that come in. So far ive tried the bun bo hue and #23 both with broth and dry. I liked it better dry because these clear noodles are easier to pick up when the broth doesn'tcoat it. I can also pick out certain ingrediemts easier since there's no broth to hide them. This dish has a lot of protein in it with the ground turkey and seafood. As for the bun bo hue, no surprises with this dish, your typical spicy soup dish. There are a bunch of options and i intend on trying their raw beef dish because it looks so flavorful in the photo. Restrooms are for customers only but they tend to get a lot of random walk ins from foot traffic on the strip. read more

We came to town for a surgical procedure, and broth was recommended for the first day of recovery. Having had pho from a different location for lunch, I suggested it for dinner. Pho Vietnam is one block over from our hotel. I walked in and was helped right away. Before long I had my pho ga and (wonton egg noodle soup) in hand. I was thinking of how to separate the broth from the noodles and meat with the limitations of hotel life as I opened the bag. It was all separate! Nearly a quart of broth. Easy. For mine, it had the wontons in it, and I stirred in my jalapeños, bean sprouts, noodles, basil, and all the rest. Chopsticks, forks, spoons and napkins were all in the bag. Delicious. Your classic Vietnamese eatery. Reminded me of Pho 43 in Phoenix, AZ. I had the classic Pho Ga (chicken pho), and my friend had the vermicelli. I thoroughly enjoyed my platter: it was hot, full of delicious noodles, great flavors, but lacking in terms of the amount of meat. The chili on the side complimented the soup very well, and I was given enough bean sprouts to leave very content. My friend noted that her vermicelli was good, but not spectacular. It fulfilled a craving, but left much to be desired. The service was good; waitresses were attentive as to who was coming into the store and when clients were ready for their checks. I'd walk a mile for a good bowl of pho, but even more adventurously, I'd take my life in my hands and take the 19 through the 'Loin if that was the goal. In this case, Jamie W. and I just took the California Street cable car over Nob Hill and jumped off at Polk to get here. Thank goodness, as the pho at Pho Vietnam is merely decent. What makes the difference between great and middling pho is the broth. Turtle Tower, at least the original one on Larkin, does it right, while others not so much. I'd put this pho in the middle of the pack. Good enough to slurp but not enough to remember for a return visit. Part of the problem is that the waitress refuses to crack a smile here. Not sure why the frown, but it made us feel like we were being sent to our room for our supper. Things started on a promising note with the $3 half order of the Vietnamese Spring Rolls (Goi Cuon) which were crispy-fresh with the standard combo of shrimp, lettuce and vermicelli noodles accompanied by a thick, dark peanut sauce (see photo). What was weird was that I thought I ordered the full portion for the both of us to share, but we let is pass since more food was coming. Jamie felt he took a wrong turn with an order of the $8.75 Grilled Pork with Imperial Rolls (Com Thit Nuong, 3 Cha Gio), which turned out to be blandly generic in flavor and execution (see photo). He also went for the small $3.50 bowl of Beef Ball Soup (Chen Bo Vien) but couldn't quite get over the rubbery texture of the balls for reasons that were all too clear (see photo). So I was the one that went for the pho, the big $8.25 bowl of Pho Dac Biet with all the meat fit to eat - the rare steak, the well done flank, the brisket, the tendon, the tripe and the beef balls (yes, me too...) And of course, it came with the thin vermicelli noodles, the snap-ready bean sprouts, the basil, the lemon wedges, and the pepper slices (see photo). Everything was there that you would expect from a combo bowl of pho, but the beef broth was just too diluted to lend any flavor impact. That was the most disappointing aspect to my dish, and uncharacteristically, I left most of the broth in my bowl. Oh well, it was worth a shot. And please smile, will ya? FOOD - 3 stars...middling Vietnamese fare would put it somewhere near the DMZ, wouldn't it? AMBIANCE - 3 stars...large, sunny space but... SERVICE - 2 stars...unhappy, unsunny people serve here TOTAL - 3 stars...I'd walk a mile for good pho, so I better keep walking to Little Saigon read more

I love PHO and love trying all the places around my new work neighborhood. My friend turned me on to this place and we have now been here a couple times. My favorite pho is the rare beef with this beef meatballs. I love adding lots of jalapenos, basil and sriracha hearts. Usually one bowl will leave me really full, but it's so delcious that I always attempt to eat it all. My friend will order different dishes including the chicken noodle and won ton soups. Everything looks pretty great, service is fast and the food is always affordable. read more
