Well - If you're a noodle lover, you will not like this pho. Thinner than usual noodles boiled in tap water dumped into the rich beef broth ruined the dish for us. It diluted the Pho and all I could taste was bland watery noodles. Was also no al Dante. Broth was good, but I prefer 2000 across the street which is a bit more aromatic. 2025 update. We came for lunch on a Wednesday. Plenty of seats. Their pho broth is #1 in the TL and hence been rewarded with the Jeff H. Best Pho in the TL Award 2025. It is a flavorful broth that just brings it. The cashier lady/waitress is pure Vietnamese. We had their 2x #7 Pho Xe Lua Tan Hoa $17.60, #6 Bo Tai Chanh (beef carpaccio) $19.17 and #35 Mi Trieu Chau (dry) $16.80 soup on the side. Everything tasted authentic. Great job everyone at Pho Tan Hoa. Cons: There's no dinner service at Pho Tan Hoa and they closed at 3pm. The neighborhood is still the same. Watch where you walk if you have nice shoes on. I was craving some pho, and found this place. We ordered the shrimps, and fresh salad rolls (4 rolls), the House special beef noodle soup, which came with well-done brisket, flank, tendon, tripe, beef balls, and slices of rare steak in a large bowl, and the BBQ beef, with granulated peanuts, and egg roll over vermicelli. The shrimp rolls were great, fresh shrimps, nice textured wrap, and they paired well with the peanut sauce! The pho was fragrant, served in a good portion, and the noodle texture was great! I like it! The vermicelli bowl was also a really good portion, and came loaded with a variety of ingredients on top of it. Pho Tan Hoa is located in the tenderloin, which has gotten a lot better in recent times, but was still a little sketchy when we came in for lunch on Monday. We went with the combo pho, the beef vermicelli, and the shrimp egg roll. As someone who has been to countless Vietnamese restaurants, the theme across all the dishes is just shy of greatness. The pho was fragrant, sizable portion, and the noodle texture was great. For the vermicelli noodles, it also had sizable portion and the noodles were top notch. However, I felt the bbq beef being cut into small pieces did not do any favors as well as being slightly too salty. For the shrimp rolls, they were pretty good. Was on a layover staying around the corner in Union Square. Not the best neighbor by any stretch of the imagination, but worth the trek through human feces and homelessness. Actual affordable prices for SF, which is so hard to come by. The food is nothing short of authentic. The iced coffee was outstanding, the pho ga and the beef stew w/ rice noodles were oh so good. I really appreciate how they were nice enough to let us share it and gave us 2 smaller bowls! They also offer complimentary hot tea or water. Don't let the streets scare you off, Pho Tan Hoa serves up some of the BEST dry pho in the Bay, especially when it is something that is pretty hard to find nowadays. Really unassuming store front on Jones street, once you're inside the restaurant it is very clean. Make sure to bring CASH since they are cash only. Ordered their #35 wide egg noodles dry and the noodles came relatively quickly. Really great flavors from the sauce that's already mixed in with the egg noodles, lots of good toppings, and the side broth is delicious. 4.5 stars but rounded up to 5*. This place has been on my list for forever! The quality for the price is definitely there, hard to find similar outside the TL in SF. Got the #7 combo pho. The rare beef slices (requested on the side so they don't overcook), were sliced very thinly and so tender-- i was impressed by the quality. They not only don't charge extra for on the side, they also very thoughtfully include an extra bowl of hot broth to cook it in! The meats were plentiful, but I was pretty thirsty after this meal. The portion size was really good. We also got the #6 appetizer of beef carpaccio-- also very good! The restaurant was clean inside and service was quick. The fatty in me is usually ok trekking into somewhat danger zones for good food but just a heads up, this place was really deep into the TL so be prepared. When we turned the corner while looking for parking, i almost suggested we abort mission and I'd jump out to get take out instead. Luckily, after circling, we found parking on the same block but that didn't stop all these guys from hanging out and leaning against our car parked across the street. I used to come here 2-3 times a month when they first opened over a 10 yr period because I worked down the street. I recently started going back again whenever I'm working in the neighborhood since my buddy reminded me of this place. Seems the soup base now is better than I remember it. And the portions are definitely a lot bigger. Ate there twice within a 30 day period. I'm going to make it my regular place again whenever I'm working nearby. There are very few restaurants in San Francisco where you could get a meal under $20. This is one of them. Of course this is just for a meal and a drink without appetizers. While the location of the restaurant may not be the best but I don't mind. The inside looks a lot nicer and surprisingly quite spacious. Thank goodness for dine in option and table service. Vietnamese pho without being able to dine in would be atrocious. I hate not having the option for a small bowl on pho đặc biệt (special pho) which only comes in a medium size. Only certain pho options come in small and large. I don't get the reasoning behind this at all as it doesn't not make any sense to me. The pho is good but I don't really know if it's the best pho in San Francisco or not as I have not been to other pho restaurants in town. The spring rolls are tasty as well. An order comes in 4 rolls and you don't have options for a smaller order which I don't understand either. I ended up eating all 4 rolls myself. Pho Tan Hoa is a good Vietnamese pho restaurant that's worth the money spent. It's very affordable but is mainly restricted by lack of size options such as being able to choose a small special pho or an order of 2 spring rolls instead of 4.
