I've been coming here for years now and their food always hits the spot. Great portions, friendly staff, and service is ridiculously fast. Their pho, bun cha, and Vietnamese coffee are my favorite items. Unlike most Vietnamese restaurants that I've been to, they don't mix the coffee and condensed milk for you. Instead, they bring out the phin filter so that you can marvel at the brewing process. They also make their chili oil in house, and it's quite addictive!

Pho Tan Hoa is located in the tenderloin, which has gotten a lot better in recent times, but was still a little sketchy when we came in for lunch on Monday. We went with the combo pho, the beef vermicelli, and the shrimp egg roll. As someone who has been to countless Vietnamese restaurants, the theme across all the dishes is just shy of greatness. The pho was fragrant, sizable portion, and the noodle texture was great. For the vermicelli noodles, it also had sizable portion and the noodles were top notch. However, I felt the bbq beef being cut into small pieces did not do any favors as well as being slightly too salty. For the shrimp rolls, they were pretty good. I'm still glad that Pho Tan Hoa is here - it might be the best you can get in the area without having to go south to Little Saigon in San Jose

The menu doesn't have that many options like there's no bun rieu or banh xeo. My friend and I ordered the large special pho with everything. I really appreciate how they were nice enough to let us share it and gave us 2 smaller bowls! They also offer complimentary hot tea or water. The broth was yummy and wasn't too salty like other restaurants I've been to. It was around $18.02 including tax. There are a lot of tables inside so didn't need to wait.

Really good and filling food. The fresh roll was really good and appetizing. I only ordered half but it filled me up. The shrimp and roast pork were really delicious. The fish sauce was really tasty and not fishy. The vegetables were very crunchy and The shrimps were really nice and fresh. It is a cash only place. The service was great. The server helped me choose the best options. The place was in the Tenderloin so it was really interesting to navigate. The place is simple and spacious inside.

Another TL food gem for those serious about good eats! Don't let the streets scare you off, Pho Tan Hoa serves up some of the BEST dry pho in the Bay, especially when it is something that is pretty hard to find nowadays. Really unassuming store front on Jones street, once you're inside the restaurant it is very clean. Make sure to bring CASH since they are cash only. Ordered their #35 wide egg noodles dry and the noodles came relatively quickly. Really great flavors from the sauce that's already mixed in with the egg noodles, lots of good toppings, and the side broth is delicious. Their bun bo hue is great too but I love their dry pho here more. Strong and great vietnamese coffee. Owner lady is sweet and friendly. TL really has a lot of great food gems, just make sure to bring CASH and stay alert when you're on the streets.

I was in the mood for another bowl of pho today after my delicious bowl of pho last week at Miss Saigon. There must be another good bowl of pho somewhere nearby in downtown without having to go to SoMa (Miss Saigon), I thought. Nope, I still have to go to either Miss Saigon or Pho Huong Viet (Richmond district) for great bowls of pho because this place isn't. Pho Tan Hoa is neither bad or good, just average bowl of pho.

If you don't mind dodging the homeless, walking through streets cover with human poop landmines, encountering drug addicts using drugs on the sidewalk, walking around tents surrounded with filth and garbage, then this place is the bomb! I used to come here 2-3 times a month when they first opened over a 10 yr period because I worked down the street. I recently started going back again whenever I'm working in the neighborhood since my buddy reminded me of this place. Seems the soup base now is better than I remember it. And the portions are definitely a lot bigger. Ate there twice within a 30 day period. I'm going to make it my regular place again whenever I'm working nearby. Aside from all the obstacles you have to avoid, you may get robbed or have your car broken into also.

Place is kept clean and service is quick. I like how clean they keep the place. The servings are huge. I ordered the small and its equivalent to large's at other pho places. Make sure to bring cash though, sometimes the atm is wonky. They open early so if you ever need a hangover meal at 8am lol. The lady up front is so sweet, they offer candy when you're done eating and I was looking for a coffee flavored one so she offered me sugar free coffee from her personal stash in 5 different flavors.

There are very few restaurants in San Francisco where you could get a meal under $20. This is one of them. Of course this is just for a meal and a drink without appetizers. While the location of the restaurant may not be the best but I don't mind. The inside looks a lot nicer and surprisingly quite spacious. Thank goodness for dine in option and table service. Vietnamese pho without being able to dine in would be atrocious. I hate not having the option for a small bowl on pho đặc biệt (special pho) which only comes in a medium size. Only certain pho options come in small and large. I don't get the reasoning behind this at all as it doesn't not make any sense to me. The pho is good but I don't really know if it's the best pho in San Francisco or not as I have not been to other pho restaurants in town. The spring rolls are tasty as well. An order comes in 4 rolls and you don't have options for a smaller order which I don't understand either. I ended up eating all 4 rolls myself. Pho Tan Hoa is a good Vietnamese pho restaurant that's worth the money spent. It's very affordable but is mainly restricted by lack of size options such as being able to choose a small special pho or an order of 2 spring rolls instead of 4. For this reason, it gets a solid 4 stars.

This is not at the heart of Tenderloin. If you come from O'Farrell, you are ok. Take #38 bus get off Taylor walk half a block. It is not scary. Once inside, it is big. It was super fast once you order. #8 medium, no beef balls. #7 large had beef balls. I was very full with medium. Soup is flavorful. Complementary jasmine tea great tasting. Soup had enough meat but not enough tripe. Comes with chili, bean sprouts, lemon, not lime, basil leaves.

    8. Pho Dac Biet nice beef noodles

Great food. Friendly service. The pho is freshly made. Vietnamese & Chinese style. Ambience also okay.

We've heard about the lines and how it sells out quick as well, so we came for a late lunch at 2:30pm. The line didn't look too bad at first until I learned that there are only 11 seats exactly inside and only 2 people running the whole show. Having eaten nothing yet, this two and a half hour line did a number on us. We were so hungry that I left the line to quickly pick up some takoyaki to snack on while we waited. Once you finally get to the front, you order at the kiosk and everything is entirely self-serviced from getting seated to picking up your order. When we finally got our food, we were disappointed by how broken our soba was and how many clumps we found as well. The soba itself was also mediocre and not worth the hype. I got the scallop kakiage and while it was good some pieces were undercooked like my eggplant and that was really hard to eat. The food wasn't terrible, but not great and definitely not worth the wait and hassle. A pass for me :(

The food was good, but there were a few things that kept it from being a 5-star experience. I ordered the Pad See Ew, and while the flavor was tasty, it was noticeably salty to the point where I ended up drinking about four cups of water afterward. The portions also felt somewhat small for the price. For example, the crispy calamari was $14.50 and came with only around 4-6 pieces, which felt a little underwhelming. Service was probably a 3/5 for me and my family. When we were ordering, the server's tone came across as a bit hostile, and we felt rushed both while ordering and eating. That said, the food still had good flavor and I can see why people enjoy this place. The ambiance definitely added to the experience, and with slightly better portion sizes and a more welcoming service experience, this spot could easily be even better.

My only real complaint was the seating arrangement. My wife and I were seated at a shared counter-style table that was divided by a glass partition. While the partition provided some separation, I could still clearly see the people sitting directly across from us, along with all the eating noises and conversations. I personally prefer a little more privacy while dining, so that took away from the experience. I won't comment on the wait time because that's pretty normal for popular restaurants in San Francisco. The highlight of the meal was definitely the A5 Wagyu Ramen. It was absolutely delicious and worth ordering. The flavors were amazing, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting. Came here on a Friday night at 7:30. Had to wait about 30-40 min for 2 seats. The restaurant is…read moresmall so unless you have a 4-6 person party, expect to be seated side by side other parties. Typically what I saw was they do waves of seating and ordering so if you aren't there right at open/when they fill up, plan to write your name down and grab a drink nearby. Once we got seated, they were pretty prompt to give us utensils, napkins, cups, and water. The two of us shared the Braise Beef Galbi Stew. It's more than enough for 2 people to go home in food comas (with some food remaining) and for 3 to be sufficiently full. If you have big eaters, order an app alongside if you have 3 people. The Galbi stew was exceptional. I liked that they had various levels of spiciness. We went with spicy and it had a nice kick that elevated the dish for me. The beef was very tender and flavorful and the veggies and rice cakes soaked up all the juices. And the cheese was so stretchy! I'd actually rank this place slightly above Daeho given the shorter wait, the quality, and the price. I'll be back for sure.
