So, my cuz lives nearby and, evidently, goes here several times a week. And he LOVES pho. No joke -- it's his favorite thing to eat when he's hungover, too (sorry Taco Fiesta!). Since he'd had a good time Saturday night, we went there for some breakfast-time grub (we're Filipino, so eating traditional Asian food for brekkie is no big deal) -- and since I'm a "mostly vegetarian," I thought there might be some issues with me trying to find something to eat. Pho isn't exactly known for being veg-friendly. But, lo and behold, they had mixed veggie pho with bok choy, bean sprouts, zucchini and fried tofu! And it was DELICIOUS! Like an abfab slice of fresh and hydrating heaven...My mouth's watering just remembering it. It was so good, this is now my go-to Vietnamese restaurant in the area, especially since Rice Jonez closed oh-so-many years ago. Pretty ordinary Pho. Today was the grand opening of Pho Express in the Gaslamp Quarter. It was busy. Very busy. And so I'll let it slide that we had to wait for around 35 minutes waiting for our lunch during which time it became apparent that others that arrived after us was getting served. Hopefully they'll get their system in order soon. I had Pho Thai, number 19, and it was exactly as expected. Got a plate of thai basil, chilies, lime and beans, and a large bowl of soup. There was a reasonable amount of meat and noodles, but not perhaps as much as in the more affordable locations around San Diego. I have a hard time calling this expensive at around $7, but compared to other locations, they've added $1.50 or so per dish, and made the servings a bit smaller. I'm giving it three stars because they delivered exactly what was expected, but with slow service. I may come back and upgrade this later when I've tried eating there a few more times, because I will be back. Hate to do it but I feel like it's only fair. I still gave it a 3 but I am sure some would not be so kind. The food is still good but service has been going a little downhill lately. I think they might have changed the staff since my OG post. Just a few things to consider if you are picky about service: 1. LINGER. Somebody has to teach these new servers how to serve. Dude came up to us smelling like cigarettes and then sat at the table across from us and watched TV the whole time we were there... That was really weird, but I do have to say, other than that he was on top of everything and provided great service. 2. Food came out slow (for a pho place) these last few times I have been. First few times we went the food came out super fast, this past time there was like one other table in the restaurant and we were waiting for a good minute. All in all I'd say you are better off going across the street to Saigon Star for better food and service. read more

Wife and I have been here ~5 times, always for takeout. Every time I call, it's always a 10 minute or less wait. Can't complain about that. Food ordered: Chicken + Eggroll Bun, Small chicken pho. Bill is ~$20 including tip. Price is better than the Pho place across the street and I'm happy with the amount of food and the taste. Our go to in the area for Vietnamese and for when the wifey needs soup to warm her throat or help her sickyness. Also of note is usually when I have come in one of the cashiers(?) is usually on the computer playing Hearthstone. I don't mind as he gets my food packed and the bill to me quickly, but it's interesting. I can see how customers might take it the wrong way but as long as it doesn't affect the service or the food, I couldn't complain. Price and service could be slightly better but overall will keep coming back. read more

I've been there a few times already and every time I'm there I'm delighted to the point that I tell ManCandy that I should really give this place a good yelp review, but alas I leave there with such a full tummy and satisfied goodness that the next order of business quickly becomes a nap superseding all of my good intentions. This time, fond memories of weekend happiness and active procrastination have triumphed and so here I am to say: "Go, have this very reasonably priced delicious Pho should you find yourself in the Grantville/Allied Gardens area in need for warm filling Vietnamese tastiness." I've found myself loyal to the Steak vermicelli dish with a side of egg rolls (don't you dare assume that you can simply add that for a nominal charge, fool, the menu clearly does not offer this and don't make the mistake I did on my second visit to assume that it would be done this way - pssssht!) ManCandy seems to favor the tofu Pho and that's always good too, I know because he's generous with his food and recognizes I will always feed when offered. Thai Iced tea w/ boba is sometimes a little light on the boba but doesn't disappoint anyway. Don't waste your time on the Kung Pao Chicken, it did not look like the menu photo, portion was rather small, and has been the only thing I was slightly disappointed with on my multiple visits here. read more

Some food places I leave smiling and whistling, beaming out love to the world. Rakadeka across the street is like that, Saigon Star across the street is like that. Emiliano's is like that. Jump Tokyo is like that. A little further away, in University Heights, and Soltan Banoo is like that. Wa Dining Okan on Convoy is like that. This place is not like that. I have given them dozens of chances, as I work close-by, but every time it's horrible. This last time I seriously felt the utter hatred of the guy behind the counter. I left feeling gross. This business does not care about people so how can I eat their food? They are only here to clock in the hours get the money and leave. They wish they wouldn't even have to see you. Of course, maybe they have a few friends in the neighborhood, but I'm talking in general. They suck at customer service, and I feel sorry that they are squandering a chance to be a positive force in the community and world. They probably have personal problems, but that's no reason to feel sorry for them and take their abuse. And it's not just me, my co-workers all agree. I've given it my last chance. I'm a huge fan of Pho, and when I moved here I started my search for a decent place. This is the first one I've visited and it's definitely a winner. The place is small, but clean and bright. The owner, whom we've spoken with, is wonderful. The items were all fresh and delicious. PHO XPRESS - how I love you. Super fast, VERY tasty pho that will leave your stomach and wallet happy. This is a neighborhood joint with really good pho. Nice and clean eating area, Mom and Pop run, super friendly, and equally tasty. We always get the spring rolls (all are good) and large well done steak pho split between the two of us (which leaves us perfectly full). The broth of the pho is delectable - complex, earthy, and oh-so-good. We keep saying we're going to try something different, but alas - our tasty buds say 'nay'! Our recommendation: go. I have read a lot of reviews about this restaurant, and it is just as minute away from our house, so we decided to try it last night. What a gem! This is one of the best Vietnamese restaurants I have ever been to. First, the service was OUTSTANDING! Very nice! Secondly, the food was very fresh, flavorful, and did I say fresh? The BEST thing was the Salt and Pepper Calamari...YUM! The only negative thing i have to say (and the reason for only 4 stars) was that I have tried better egg rolls. They seemed as if they made a hundred of them and they stay in the freezer until they cook them. I understand making a bunch to have for the week, but these seemed to be not as fresh as everything else. OVERALL a great place to go...definitely try the Salt and Pepper Calamari!!! read more

Just came back from their downtown location and I was very impressed! Ordered the xpress spring roll with chicken - very tasty! The chicken was grilled, and the rolls had a very think strip of crispy wrapping on the inside. I was kinda in the mood for the fried stuff but this was better - clean, fresh, and very very good! Also ordered the pho with chicken - the flavors were very complex. the onions were sliced thin enough as not too be too overwhelming - they were actually sweet. I have been here about 3 times in the past two months. In my opinion, this is a very good place to get pho and also appetizers. The stock is flavorful but not the best I have ever had. I have been to most of the pho places in San Diego and this place has some of the best noodles ever. Meat was pretty good to but the texture of the noodles was what stood out the most for me. The other thing that I would like to mention is the salt an pepper calamari, which I have have had twice so far. They serve it very warm and with slices of jalapeno peppers. PLEASE BE SURE TO TRY THIS!!! I dont think it goes very well with pho but it tastes great on its own, especially if you are like me and you love a little spicy food. Service was also good. My work crew and I really love this place. We get a variety of items including the xpress rolls, egg rolls, bun, and banh mi. We usually get the order via ubereats and they always package very neatly and indicate well which item is which. This is always very appreciated when you order for a bunch of people.
