Ugh. The food: the chicken pho was full of fatty chicken. Didn't impress me-Simply too much competition in the area for a lackluster chicken pho. The area: right near Barclays so super easy if you're coming in for an event ClassPass warning: I found this place on ClassPass and they informed me AFTER I received my food that this was take out only. The entire bar area was empty but I was not able to sit because I ordered through ClassPass. They blamed ClassPass and said it was a universal rule....however, no other restaurant in the area has that policy. Typically, restaurants will show you their full menu (ClassPass offers a limited menu) and chat with you for a while in order to get you to come back....it works! There were at least 15 empty seats and they couldn't make an exception to a "rule" (that isn't listed on the restaurant ClassPass site). Customer service was seriously lacking. read more

Pho was delicious, the veg stock as well as the beef stock are both extremely flavorful. Especially hard to find a well made veggie stock in pho. Brisket in the banh mi was very good but the sandwich was lacking that crunch I'm looking for. The bread soaked up a lot of the juice from the brisket so that contributed to the lack of crunch but the veggies were a bit sparse too. So deeply mediocre. Was it soup? Yes. Was it pho? Depends on who is asking. If the bleak Vietnamese dining landscape of NYC is your frame of reference, you'll probably enjoy it. If you've come from any place with a large, thriving Vietnamese community (looking at you, Houston, NOLA, San Jose, LA, etc.) you're going to be disappointed. The broth tasted as if someone whispered "star anise" in another room. There's no oomph, no love, no long simmered goodness. The rice noodles were over cooked. The chicken was...grilled?!? In pho? Stop. There were 3 tiny leaves of basil, a scant tablespoon of bean sprouts and the cutest mouse-sized lime wedge to accompany the "pho". They'd have to be trying to make it worse. I should start this off with the fact that I eat pretty much anything...like I'm the human garbage disposal. But the pho here was a travesty to the beauty of what pho is. I ate half of mine :( Granted, the aesthetic, service, and even the brisket in it were alright, but what they sell as pho here is not it. trendy spot that has quite a long wait from the buzz they are getting on social media. it's a little pricey but the hype was real - the pho is just really damn good. it's also super cute inside and they're efficient with getting everyone seated and served as quickly as they can. the wait list was long but it moved pretty quickly especially considering the restaurant isn't very big. read more

There are regretfully not many good Vietnamese places in NYC, but Phobar is delicious and a top contender for sure. It is a bit pricier than the Vietnamese restaurants in Chinatown, but the ambiance is nicer. My only complaint is service wasn't very attentive. read more

I walked in and they were able to seat me right away. The food was so good here and they provide really good service. Had the oxtail pho noodles, fried spring rolls, wings and Thai tea. Great ambiance, but the service was below minimum. There's no chili oil on the table, I asked for a side of chili oil and when the pho was brought out the owner had already put it in the bowl. Where do they do that at?? So now the whole pallet of soup is very spicy and I can't control the taste. Then the side of bean sprouts , jalapeños, limes , and mint came out after we got soup. It was about a 4 minute pause with bowls of soup no spoons or sides. When the side of veggies did come out no apology was said , the side was just sat on the table and walked away. As a Vietnamese native, I would have to agree with the other reviews that this is not what a bowl of Pho should taste like. They use quality ingredients and good tasting cuts of meats but I really wanted to return the bowl out after the first slurp. It's difficult to finish when the broth is so bland. It was not necessary to so use so much green onions and cilantro across several of their dishes. This made the classic banh mi distasteful. The spring rolls was delicious; that dish deserves 5 stars. The customer service and ambiance was great. The price is fair for the neighborhood and portion size. Unfortunately I would not be returning and would have to drive out to Williamsburg or chinatown for delicious bowl. read more

Great location, nice layout, decor, and vibe, friendly and efficient staff and killer food! Nice enough for a casual date, but just as good for a small group, kids etc, or grabbing lunch alone. Considering the location and quality, the prices are on the low side, always a plus. They have vegetarian options, including veggie pho with lots of flavor, and the Vietnamese iced coffee is spot on. On a nice day, open doors and windows turn the cafe onto a very pleasant open-air space, and the choice of music is calm but upbeat so it's a very pleasant, relaxing spot for a sit-down lunch. Nice people, but hands down the worst banh mi I've ever had. It was just a minuscule amount of flavorless ingredients haphazardly stuck between two pieces of half-stale bread. If I could give Phobar 0 stars I would. My sister and I came here excited to try this place seeing that they had good reviews and they are close by. Well my experience was exactly the opposite. When myself and my sister literally the only black people there got there one of the ladies walked up to us and began to seat us. Her coworker the other woman there, told her she was giving that table to someone else and for us to go back and wait. No problem.. but given her attitude we should've left at this point. She then came back to us never making eye contact or greeting us and told us we can take the table. Picture a waitress walking by your table never looking at either person at the table asking are you ready to order. Literally still walking. At this point we're confused, asking each other is she serious, but we let that go. Now our order is ready,the lady brings our pho to us and leaves. Never brought us spoons or the plates of stuff that comes with the pho. We sat there as they walked by multiple times and we had to stop them and ask for spoons. We saw them bring out other bowls of pho and each order immediately followed with the spoons and plates. We watched as these woman went to each and every table including the ones outside and made sure the tables were ok and never not one time came to ours. Not once! I tried getting the attention of one of the ladies to get our check and was ignored. I finally got her attention asked for something to go and the check and got neither. I then asked for the manager because it just became too much. I could tell by the woman's response she knew why I was asking for the manager. The manager came over, I told her of our experience her response was that they were in training and the young lady said "my stomach hurts" is why her customer service was nonexistent to our table. I'm my opinion them being in training is the reason they should be nice and attentive to everyone. I mentioned us being the only black table in the beginning because every other table was white and Asian. This was no coincidence, they were not too busy, they were not training and even if they were this is not an excuse to ignore an entire paying table of customers. This treatment was solely because we were black. If you are black I would not recommend you go here. Their customer service toward us is deplorable and disrespectful. I would never step foot back into this establishment nor would I recommend it. Even after all the unprofessional behavior we remained respectful and kind. I can say a lot more but I'll leave it here.
