I hate having to write this review as my family has been getting cakes from Phoenix bakery since I was a baby! The cakes are always good and still are. My gripe is with the service. I emailed about asking how far ahead I'd have to place an order and was told 72 hours. I emailed them on June 9 for an event June 13. Received a call on June 10 to confirm my order for pickup right at 10 when they open. Gave my credit card and that was that. My parents went to pickup the cake for me as I was setting up for the party and they got there promptly at 10 only to be told my cake wasn't ready because it was a large cake (I ordered one 6" and one 12") and they opened at 10 so they had no time to prepare it??? What???? I preordered it! It's not like we went there and asked for it on the spot and it was not a custom design. My mom was told it would take 45 minutes! Mind you the pickup was at 10 because the party started at 11. I don't understand the concept of being able to preorder and then not having the cake ready. I still want to support a business that has played a big part in family events my entire life and keep it going but I doubt I'd order from here again if I had a schedule to keep. read more

We were passing through L.A. when we stopped by Chinatown and saw this gem of a bakery. It's a little dated inside but I love that nostalgic feeling of visiting establishments that have withstood the test of time. The guy who helped us was friendly and attentive. The bakery offered some wonderful classics like moon cakes, baos, and cookies. If we weren't saving our stomachs for lunch, we surely would've picked up more goodies than the generously-portioned, baked bbq pork bao, a wintermelon pastry, red bean moon cake, and lotus bean with 1 egg yolk moon cake. Those moon cakes seriously rival the top-notch ones that come in fancy metal boxes. read more

I really enjoy visiting this small bakery in LA's Chinatown. Despite the fact that I've been a few times I have yet to try their famous strawberry cake. I usually go for the mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn festival. Unfortunately, they were sold out by the time I made it this year, but I was lucky enough to snag an assortment last year. They are exceptionally tasty. I can't quite describe them. The flaky pastry and sweet paste filling come together in a perfect harmony of tastes and textures. This year I grabbed a lotus cake which is similar, but much denser. I really enjoyed the melon cake which is actually more of a squash filling. That had just the right amount for a balanced mouthful. Grew up in the SGV so maybe I'm spoiled because I decided to try Phoenix bakery after reading a few positive reviews and boy was I disappointed. I straight up apologized to my sister for giving her such a dry inferior whipped cream covered substance that they called cake. (the money I paid was real tho) I was so embarassed. I could see it in her face from one bite that it wasn't good, so I didn't let her lie to our family and tasted it myself and had to call it out. "I'm so sorry sis, it's the oldest bakery in Chinatown and I heard good things and thought I'd give them a try." When they say it's spongecake I didn't know it actually meant you'd wanna wash your dishes with it. Yeah, it was THAT dry. And now I'm out $40, I looked bad in front of my family, and I owe my sister a cake. The cream puffs I bought on the side were exemplary. Just buy a bunch of those. read more

Phoenix bakery was our family favorite growing up! It was always a treat coming here as a little boy. 29 years later it still pretty much tastes the same. It was slightly drier but still good! The steamed pork bun was surprisingly great. I would frequent other places for theirs buns but decided to give theirs a try. The bun and filling are the closest you can get to a Hawaii style steamed bun, manapua. Soooo good when steamed! read more

We took a drive to help ourselves to some of our Chinatown favorites and Phoenix Bakery was a must stop. I went in hoping to leave with much more, but there wasn't much to pick from. I'm not sure if it's because they are making less due to fewer customers during the pandemic or if it was cause I came in at 3pm. Maybe it was a combination of both. I wanted pork buns and a very nice employee let me know that they're not currently making any. I overheard another employee let a customer know that cake by the slice was currently buy 1 get one free. So I bought a couple and of course they were delicious! And we left with a box of almond cookies :) everyone here is friendly, very nice. You don't have to touch the door to open. You do have to touch to pay with card and sign but they offer hand sanitizer. Update: increased my rating to 5 star cause the cake was delicious and I haven't been able to stay away from the box of cookies we brought home. Also, that is the best response I've received from a business owner and that just goes a really long way from me. All of the employees were very nice and I can see why. Ownership sets the example. I will certainly be back for my bbq pork buns! read more

Two words: sugar butterflies!! I bought a pack of them today, and I can't stop eating them. They're the perfect level of sweetness, a tasty dessert without being too sickly sweet. And the crunch is very satisfying! We also bought a slice of cake (moist, tender cake, absolutely delicious) and a handful of dark chocolate covered almonds -- a nice bite when you want a break from the sweetness of the sugar butterflies, and you can tell they're made from high-quality chocolate. Yelp Challenge 2016 Its been 25 years since I've been here. My makers used to drag me here to buy their very expensive strawberry cake. I went with them for those butterflies that were super sticky. Flash forward 25 years and I asked the mister to let me run in for those honey coated fried won tons I ate as a kid. 25 years later this place looks smaller. Not as fancy as I remembered and for a bakery it was bare. They had a few pastries and almond cookies/fortune cookies but that was it. Those strawberry cakes are expensive. A small one is about $27.00. My parents must of really liked them to shell out that much back then. Over $175 for a full sheet cake. But I didn't come for cake. I came for butterflies. They were sticky and yummy just like I remembered. I ate 5, I would of ate 6 but I had to share . I Gained a pound and had very sticky fingers. I'd do it all over again. The parking sucks dragon balls. Its in Chinatown. If you like strawberry cake with whip cream and fresh strawberries then you should pray to the dragons that they find you a spot. If you don't like strawberry cake then you have no business here. 5 star memories as a 10 year old. 3 star memories as a grown up. Just OK now. read more

My girlfriend was here many moons ago. The store has been in the same location for 80 years. August will be 81. Girlfriend stated she used to get the Fomous Fresh Strawberry whipped cream cake. We got the one without nuts. She would get that for many of the birthdays that they celebrated. It was very good. Not very sweet. It was light and fluffy. Had sweet in season strawberry's. Perfect whipped cream. We also got large butterflies. They are made like a fried wonton with honey added. I havent been able to taste those yet. Well the nail hit the head for my birthday cake! Baked goods are mediocre at best and the customer service is hideous. When a customer has a reasonable, common request like writing on the cake BEFORE I arrive then just do it! I paid full price up front for a simple cake any other good shop provides writing as requested. Because at the end the cake belongs to the one who pays. I have been having their cakes since I was a child. My dad found their bakery in the early 90's and since then it became our families go to. I have tried other bakeries for birthdays but nothing compares to Phoenix! Oh and their Almond cookies are amazing! So are their chocolate cream puffs! Give them a try soon! This place is my families tradition. My mom is not happy with her cake unless it's from Phoenix backery so mother's day and her birthday my birthday and my daughter's birthday are always going to be the strawberry vanilla almond cake . This July was extra special my daughter was telling me how happy she was that it was her birthday, the lady that was helping me smiled and said let's make this cake extra special put special hot pink frosting even added . I of course came for the much yelped about strawberry cake but of course they did not have any left by the slice as I came on the busiest weekend in Chinatown, Chinese New Year. As we were waiting in the slow moving line it seemed many in front of us were walking out with large cakes. They had a whole wall of refrigerators filled with all different size cakes. We also noticed these whole cakes were not cheap either. I settled for a slice of the white coconut cake not to be confused with the Hawaiian cake that is topped with coconut. My cake slice was good but nothing super special. The staff kept their cool and smiles on their faces and were helpful with my many questions despite the never ending line. Even though the gal gave me the wrong cake at first (that included an ingredient I was allergic to) she happily and quickly gave me the correct slice. 5 stars for service all the way. Will totally stop by if in the area again as I want to try the strawberry cake, and the cake belly of the little man on their logo is to cute, but I would not come out this way just to go here. read more

My family and I have been buying our strawberry cakes from Phoenix Bakery since the late 70's. The cakes the last 3 times has been on the dry side so I'm starting to think that something has been lost in the recipe through the generations. It is still decent, but not worth an exclusive drive from San Fernando Valley like it used to be. In summary, I do agree with many of the legacy customers that the quality and value is not where it used to be. But I still come back occasionally, with hope that they will go back to the old recipe. read more

Ouch. $3.75 for the small 5 oz box of what I've always referred to as butterflies since I was a kid. I'm not entirely sure what they are called but its the won ton like items that are deep fried and typically covered in honey but here they're covered in corn syrup. What a let down. I have never seen mochi in any of the bakeries in China Town but it is still not all that impressive since it is factory made and not made in house. Good place to hit up "vintage" cake toppers if you're in the market for California Raisins, little plastic people who look like buddha or the 1996 olympic mascot partaking in various olympic sports. I stopped by Phoenix this morning to pick up a tres leches cake. It was $26.95 for a cake that serves 8-12 people. I dare to say that it was better than Porto's in Glendale. I was on a quest to find and buy a jade bangle and I found a spot with good reviews but it was in a teeny, tiny alley. The only landmark I could find on Google Map was this bakery. So I just had to buy something from here as a thank you - or an excuse to eat carbs again. It has that small, hole-in-the-wall, cafeteria feel. I did not feel any bit of compulsion to sit down and eat there. BUT. The place was busy. On a Sunday evening. Says a lot. Sesame balls - OMG. Best balls ever. Chewy with the right amount of sweetness from the red bean inside. It was a tad too oily but who cares. Chinese Flaky pastries - Not a big fan so I'm not ordering those again but it was worth a try. Phoenix bakery has been my favorite in the area since I was in high school. Growing up, some old classmates used to also work here so it was also cool seeing them behind the counter when I ordered my pastries! In high school I LOVED the red velvet cake and cream puffs here. You can tell they really put in attention in crafting their baked goods. The cream puffs are light and fluffy with amazing custard and cream inside. The red velvet cake is thick and rich. The birthday cakes here are also BOMB. You can get custard or chocolate mousse inside them too. The frosting is so light and smooth and the cake is soft and fluffy. They are most famous for the signature strawberry cakes and almond cookies. There are some seats in here so you can enjoy your baked goods. Also this bakery has a long history in the area. It's been run by the same family for four generations and they're pretty much famous to LA locals read more
