I am a die hard Phoenix fan and they just lost a customer and all my family and friends! I come to Phoenix from 40 miles away just to buy their cakes! Last time we bought a cake the cake was super stale!!! It tasted a couple days old! I called and spoke to the manager on duty and he apologized and told me to come in for a refund or another cake. So I go in to pick up a new cake and speak to the manager and he totally disregards me and acts like he doesn't know who I am! They are just money hungry and have no customer service skills!! OK, call me a party pooper. I really don't understand the fascination with the strawberry cream cake everyone here is raving about. I stopped by here after the Empress Pavilion to see what's all the fuss about this super Strawberry cake I am missing out on. Usually I am pretty good in finding out about bakery goods. So it was a news to me that this place is the king of a Strawberry Cream cake place. Obviously I got to check it out. This place is located very close Queen Bakery and Wonder Bakery. Three bakeries within 3 minutes of a walk is a killer competition. Walked right in and proceed to scan the place for that cake. Took about 12 seconds before locating that piece. The girl behind the counter was done with the customer ahead of me and proceed to help me. I ordered that slice of cake, chocolate mousse cake, and a chocolate cream horne. Interestingly they don't have coffee or hot chocolate at the time. So, it's only milk (which is OK) and sodas (which is not OK) for your desserts. Oh, I scanned the place....no Pineapple buns. FYI. Three tables to sit and eat if you want to quickly eat that bite. There was a steady stream of customers so this place is humming all the time. Very popular indeed. So I was think at the time in that I'm so out of the loop. Took a bite of that famous Strawberry cake... the verdict.... It tasted........ very dry. The chocolate ones are good. YELP Wedding Edition I went here for a cake tasting yesterday. I called a week in advance for an appointment and set it up to try the strawberry filled sponge, marble, and chocolate cakes. The slices were huge and the guy was prepared for us. The bride has gotten her birthday cake here every year for years and always gets the renown strawberry filled sponge cake. She now loves the chocolate cake. The cakes have a lot going for them. They are not overly sweet (of course you can always ask for it to be sweeter) but just right. They are also moist and light. The texture and taste are winning. Even the chocolate isn't too chocolatey! However, what I like most is the whip cream. It's also very light and not too sweet. Yup, I do not have much of a sweet tooth and like a very subtle sweetness to my desserts. The bride loves sweet and the cakes satisfies both of us completely. The groom, who also doesn't like sweets, loved it. He wanted to book a cake that moment. At the FIRST tasting? "H-No" from the bride and I. Why no? While we love the taste, the bride and I want a gorgeous cake. We have very similar tastes. Since we want the cake simple, very detail could be scrutinize, so it has to be perfectly crafted. We just have to see more and tastes more. I will say, the cakes here are a steal for a wedding. The prices are only a third of some of the other places we're going to go see and the cake tastes wonderful. These people also have years of wedding cake experience. One of my favorite bakeries as a kid. We used to come here to get the fresh strawberry cake for all birthday celebrations. I love it that they have the 4" round for small celebrations or even just dessert when we were craving their delicious strawberry cake. Their cake is soft and moist and the cream is very light. My husband and I were trying to get dinner in Chinatown and the restaurant we were planning to eat at wasn't open yet. We Yelp'd some places nearby for some dessert that we can take home after dinner. These were what I tried: Sugar butterflies - honestly, I only wanted to get this because people mentioned it on Yelp. I've never had sugar butterflies before so I wasn't sure what to really expect. It looked like a fried wonton. However, it was yummy and addicting. We purchased our wedding cake for our August 2015 wedding from Phoenix. We couldn't have been happier with our wedding cake!! Youlen was extremely professional and helpful. He was very upfront about what he could and could not do. This bakery only does whipped cream cakes...which you should be very concerned about if you have an outdoors wedding...like me. Honestly, I really liked their strawberry custard cake (and the price)...so, we did risk it (by the way, they give you a TON of cake during the cake tasting). We eventually decided on a three tier cake with air gaps because we needed the cake delivered to our caterers instead of our venue. A stacked cake required assembly which the caterers didn't want responsibility for. We asked Youlen for a plain white cake and my bridesmaids stuck roses on the cake after the caterers brought it to the venue and assembled it. They literally stab it with the flower stems...I think it looked fine...lol, but I'm not a picky person. The cake sat in indirect light for five hours until it was time to cut the cake...surprisingly, it didn't melt AT ALL. My wedding venue had a koi pond so I expected the cake to attract a few bugs...nope, there were no bugs on our cake. Overall, I'm really happy with this bakery. Well known bakery in Chinatown and in the Los Angeles County. This bakery has been around for a very long time for a good reason... because they produce delicious confections at pretty fair prices. Of course a LOT of people do come here for their white cakes with those fresh cut strawberries in between each soft delectable layer of cake... so sweet and light, honestly a perfect way to welcome in a new year (birthday) or a new chapter in one's life (graduation, new job, baby shower, etc). Heck, these cakes are good, it gives one reason to come up with a reason to celebrate just to have this cake (Why not celebrate because it's Friday? Or that you got to work on time today? I'd come if you were celebrating). Of course there are other things this bakery has to offer, but it's usually those fluffy white cakes with the strawberry filling that lures me in. But unfortunately, I never quite remember what other baked goodies that I have previously purchased, although I am pretty sure they were good though. Oh and yes they do sell other cakes here, like the fruit tart type of cakes that are very pretty and delicious as well. Anyways, yes I do agree with other yelpers that the parking is pretty horrible here. I usually just park further away, since I usually try to do some shopping while I'm in Chinatown. But if you are just coming to Chinatown to check out this bakery, then I would either recommend a few options... 1) have your friend/ significant other drive around while you go inside (the bakery isn't that big so it wouldn't take too long for that person to wait in the car), 2) take public transportation (the gold line does stop in Chinatown) and walk 3) park at one of those $5 parking lots and walk 4) park along the street near the bakery and walk 5) attempt to park in the parking lot (if not, then try options 1-4). Customer service seems to be fine every time I've gone here. The workers here do speak minimal enough English so if you want to order a cake or if you want to buy one of the baked goods on display, you should have no problems. They do speak Cantonese here and Mandarin as well if that's up your alley. Overall, I always like to stop by here whenever I find myself ventured off into Chinatown. And yes, even if I am not in the mood for sweets (but then again, when would I not be?). Felipe has an amazing sense of customer service! Last month, I ordered a last minute strawberry shortcake for a birthday celebration that day. This is also my all-time favorite dessert. When I called to place the order, Felipe answered the phone. I was crestfallen when he said that usually such cakes are placed 24-48 hrs in advance. I was clearly unhappy, as I didn't know that was the usual procedure. To help me out, Felipe chose one of the cakes in the showcase, wrote the Happy Birthday message on top, put it in a box with additional thick wax paper so the lid could remain propped up without smudging the cake top, told me exactly where to park, and went outside for curbside delivery (due to my Covid concerns) and put the cake into the trunk (my husband called when he arrived)! Hate to put up this rating for one of my childhood bakeries. But quarter piece of a strawberry per slice of cake is ridiculous. Many things have changed post pandemic and most certainly after 20 years. But inflation doesn't suffice paying $23.95 for a 6 inch cake with less than 6 strawberries for the whole cake....... The cream is not as creamy and nice consistency as it used to be. It was very busy in the shop on a Sunday. Parking is very limited so it's a hassle to stop by. Would be worth the trip if it had any of the qualities it did back in the day. It's been many years since I've set foot in the bakery and it did not live up to expectations. They have less variety and the strawberry slice is no longer a square slice it's the regular triangle slice. Ultimately the flavor is lacking compared to before as well. The cake is dense, which is the type of shortcake they used to have. But oddly it's more wet now. On the bright side the almonds still taste great! read more

Nearly all of my childhood birthday cakes were from here. And many of my children's birthday day cakes as well even after we moved to a different county and had to make a trek to get there. They are now adults and still request them. Light and fluffy cakes with fresh strawberries and whipped creme frosting and topped on the sides with sliced almonds. Brings back so many good memories. The reason why I didn't give five stars is because for a handful of years now the cakes have been a bit dry. It makes us sad because we remember what they used to be like. Now it is hit and miss. We've wondered if the change was due to the patriarch baker passing on? I can't believe that I haven't reviewed Phoenix Bakery yet! They sell one of my favorite cakes ever!!! The cake that is their specialty is strawberries & whipped cream. It's soooo good! Not too sweet, light and just right! They have a variety of pastries but I mainly go here for that one cake. I do stop sometimes when they have moon cakes. I always forget when that is but when I see the sign up for moon cakes, I always stop in and buy a few :) They also decorate cakes. They have little toys and items you can buy to top cakes, they'll write whatever you want on the cake. I had no problems getting messages written in Chinese. read more
