Only recommended if you speak Spanish. I went in on a Monday to place an order for a cake for a graduation party I was hosting on Saturday. I was prepared to pay a cash deposit upfront to place the order because I had seen other mentions here about it being cash only. The person at the counter didn't speak much English and asked me to come back the following day at 1 PM to speak with the cake manager. This is one of Historic DTLA's hidden gems. You can still get coffee and a pastry for under five dollars, to go or eat in. I needed to grab 3 dozen pan dulces for my classroom so I stopped by this local spot. When I saw the great variety of pan de muerto, I had to get those instead. The owner is a lovely lady, dressed in a chef coat and pearls. When she found out the bread was for my students, she gave me one dozen for free! She even packed everything into a huge recyclable bag for me. I got to work, gave them out and had one for myself. The best Pan de Muerto I have ever had ever. After reading the reviews and reading how wonderful the Guava empanada's were, on top of "Oh Yay, when did they finally open a decent Panaderia/Bakery in downtown? Well sadly, my regrets for being so harsh, but it wasn't what I expected :( First thing, I asked if they had any Guava empanada's and the counter person told me they didn't have any. Then I asked, "When will they get more or when do they make them?" He stated "Ummmm, I don't know, maybe next week". Ok, it's a random whenever, whatever business. Ok. Well I ended up buying a couple of pan dulce and also looked for the Pan de Muerto (which I didn't see). About this time most Latino bakeries have them, especially those that carry Pan Dulce. I didn't bother to ask. My coworkers tried the pastries and didn't really finish them (I couldn't eat any unfortunately - medical reasons), but when you see people not finishing pastries, you know they weren't satisfied. I'll stick to Boyle Heights/East Los and for that matter Hawthorne/Inglewood tends to deliver the goods. Too bad, I really got exited this was closer to my work and I really wanted to like it, but just couldn't. Perhaps the cakes are more satisfying. They looked really good. read more

This is a hole-in-the-wall bakery that's pretty much hiding in plain sight (there's no business sign on the storefront, but the cakes, pastries and goodies are right in your face, so I don't see the need). Located right outside one of the many food halls in downtown on Broadway, this place is a hidden gem for lunch. They have an assortment of sweets and baked goods, both cold and freshly baked. Very inexpensive, too ($1-4). The takeaway here is their delicious tortas and sandwiches, both $5 each (special meats like pastrami or roast beef are $1 more--bang for your buck, regardless). You can have them toasted or not. Ask to have them cut in half if you want to With the hiked prices of the young DTLA foodie scene, I'm hooked on these sandwiches, especially on a budget. Add-ons are free (cheese, tomato, spinach, onions, etc.), even avocado! The ladies behind the counter work really hard and are very skillful at taking multiple orders. However, they only take cash--I have to remember to get cashback in order for me to eat here. The first thing I got to try from this place was a cupcake! It was one giant vanilla cupcake. If you choose a sweet empanada, you have your choice of sweet fillings like vanilla bean, pineapple, dulce de leche, apple or guava. I got to try a chicken empanada and the filling was nice and flavorful. For the sweet empanadas, I tried a guava filled one. What a delightful treat with it's sweet guava filling and a little bit of sugar sprinkled on the outside crust. My friend also let me try a piece of the dulce de leche empanada and I liked this one too. The thick and creamy caramel, dulce de leche filling was awesome. Hmm which sweet filling do I like the best, I can't decide! Both the ones I tried were awesome and this makes me think the other sweet fillings are just as delicious. Actually I can't even decide whether I like the savory or the sweet empanadas better. They were both great (Meaning: you should try one of each when you go here ;). I stopped in at this Mexican bakery during work and I bought a raisin roll, a pan dulce, and a pan de elote. The raisin roll was good--buttery and moist with lots of plump raisins, but the others were flavorless and a little hard (possibly over baked). Ehh. When I went to the counter to pay, the lady put my cash into an envelope and gave me change from her coin purse... A hidden gem of a place for those who work and live downtown LA. They have a great bakery and wonderful sandwiches and tortas. After the bakery in the Grand Central Market closed last year I started going here. The food is always fresh, delicious and the highest quality. Today I had a tuna torta, chips and soda for $6.50. The tuna fish torta was wonderful. I ate inside while watching a riveting spanish language drama on the tele. I definately recommend this bakery and the sandwich and salad counter. Came here to order a cake I've ordered cakes for my daughters birthday parties in the past. Rosio helped me today, all I wanted was a nice unicorn themed cake for 30-40 people. I've gotten prices from 190-250 As soon as I showed her the image she said " hmmm we could do it but can you pay it?" At that point I gave her a look. Really lady? Who does that? She then calls her manager ( Guadalupe) over the phone to ask her for a price because apparently she had no idea what she was doing. It was a convo no longer then a minute. She approaches me and says $680. This bakery is a hidden gem in the heart of Downtown LA. My sons and I enjoy driving to the bakery at least once a month to enjoy a delicious torta de carnitas paired with a homemade agua fresca.
