Phoenix Cafe is so amazing! If you are anywhere near downtown Somerville, you need to stop in -- yes, it's that good! This is a Costa Rican & American restaurant that offers diner fare, burgers & Costa Rican food. I ordered orange juice, bacon & mozzarella cheese omelette and home fries. Everything was light, tasty and delicious! I love how the bacon was wrapped the omelette so A+ for presentation. The home fries had chopped red & green peppers in them and were quite tasty and flavorful. The dessert glass display case was extremely tempting and chock full of Costa Rican desserts. I will be trying the coconut pie upon my next visit! I have a new favorite restaurant in downtown Somerville!

Looks are deceiving when it comes to this place. The food was a solid 4 stars and that's hard for me to give for classic diner fare. The service and coffee are 5 stars. my waitress was so pleasant and an experienced. She brought everything I needed before I needed it. She also introduced herself and said she'd remember me if I come again. So it has that nice "Cheers" vibe too. Did I mention the prices? They are very reasonable, and the portions are not only delicious but generous. The bacon was cooked perfectly, my eggs were done as I requested, and the French toast with custardy and well cooked. If you live in the area, it's worth a visit, but don't expect a fancy experience. Come for the food not the looks. Oh and get the bacon and have the coffee. It's not the typical diner gasoline coffee. It's a nice smooth columbian cup.

My family and I are still relatively new to our area and my wife and I got to try Phoenix Cafe while my kid actually had school and we were off from work. I went for the Mexican Breakfast Skillet and my wife had the huevos rancheros in a tortilla bowl. Coffee and hot chocolate respectively. Boy neither of these plates disappointed. Can definitely understand why they are PACKED on weekends. Was super nice to go in on a quiet Monday morning haha! :-)

$22.38 for 7 onion rings and a soggy quesadilla. Onion rings were actually good but they melted the stryofoam container.

Soggy chicken quesadilla and 7 onion rings were $22.38. I can place the order online for $18.02. Won't be going back.

Phoenix Café is a restaurant in Somerville, New Jersey. Parking is located on the surrounding streets. When we arrived, the outside dining area was busy, but inside had plenty of seating. Interior has an older style look and as a heads up, the booths are a little small. Our group ordered from the breakfast menu and the food was good. My one friend liked his Ham, Egg, and Cheese croissant sandwich. Something unique, French Fries are an option during breakfast as a potato side. I had the Italian Breakfast Skillet that came with Toast and choice of potato. The stack of Home Fries was large and the Sausage was flavorful. Service was prompt and food arrived in a reasonable amount of time. I would absolutely return here to try more of the menu. Area around the restaurant is lovely so be prepared to spend some time window shopping or exploring the stores.

Love my boozy brunches at Phoenix Café! A spot I frequent often in Somerville, Phoenix Café may not be as flashy as some of the other brunch spots, but given the BYOB option that is well catered to by their staff every time we've attended and the great value on their menu, it's one that doesn't break the bank and makes us able to swing in on the weekend without issue or much of a table wait! They have a great selection of breakfast, lunch, and dinner items, plus their coffee is always on point. Was just in for their St. Patrick's Day specials, ordering myself eggs & black coffee that also came with corned beef and cabbage, and gotta say, it hit the spot! It was a bit too chilly to sit outside for the parade, but there were plenty of tables available and they were right on the main street & route of the parade so you could easily see from inside as well. The staff is always sweet and attentive, and the place has a cozy diner vibe with a very cute outdoor setup when the temperature allows. We've gone in the past and they've brought out a little container for our champagne to keep it chilled on ice and have plenty of mixer options. They have all of your typical dinner foods but so much more. Prices are always good, usually coming out to less than $20 per person for a full menu item with sides and drinks. Nothing overly major on portion sizes but friends have taken a bit home before. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area for its quick service and great prices!

Where do I start!!! This is the worst place I have been to in my entire life. How is this in any way an establishment that serves brunch menu items right from Walmart to the microwave to the plate that they expect you to eat in. The home fries tasted like the griddle it was cooked hasn't been cleaned in weeks. The biscuits and gravy were sloppy and soggy. The service was subpar as the employees were talking louder than the other patrons of the place. And the place looked like a diner from the 70's. I see it says under new management but what happened to the other management that was here. Ughhhhhh then the waitress had the audacity to ask if I wanted a box to take the food home. ABSOLUTELY NOT! Wish I could give it a no Stars

Has anyone been here very recently? We went a couple of times and the food was good but there was no A/C indoors - would love to know if that has changed?

evidently they are under new management but i don't think they check the yelp page or update it. Probably best to stop in personally and ask and check what is happening.

Finally I tried again and this second time I was able to try some of their offerings. I came on a Saturday and they were hosting DayLite Jersey House Music event. It was LOUD and packed with people just standing around. The vibes were cool though. My friends came before me and were able to snag a table in the back room. I went up to the counter to order. Unfortunately my first choice, a matcha latte, was sold out. I asked if they had any other options because I'm not much of a coffee drinker. I was told that there were flavored lemonades, I asked the about the flavors and the person who was helping me wasn't sure so they went and asked another person who ended up coming to list the syrups and just ringing me out. I ordered a blueberry lemonade and a blueberry pop-tart to go. Everything was fine until the end of our time there. As we were getting ready to leave I grabbed what I thought was my cup and took a quick sip to finish it off so I didn't have to carry it around. Turns out I grabbed a coffee from the table instead. I thought it was my friend's so I apologized to her about drinking her drink because I didn't realize I grabbed the wrong one in the dark. She goes, "oh no it's not my drink...I have mine in my hand." I'm like whose drink and dishes are these? She said that they were there before they got there and they just pushed it to the side. Omg I almost gagged, I just took the biggest sip of some random person's drink by accident. At that point I get up to go to the bathroom to rinse out my mouth. While I'm gone by friends get their things ready and also wait outside the bathroom, which is right by our table. As soon as I get out I walk back to grab my pop-tart and it was gone, cleared away by the staff in a matter of minutes. Crazy that they left the table with dishes and cups when we got there but when we were leaving they were in a rush to clear away everything that they take my basically full pop-tart too. I was so defeated at that point I just left. To note, I did take one bite of the pop-tart and it was actually very good. My lemonade was fine, nice and tart. Overall service is kinda lacking but it was also a crazy day to visit with an event going on so I can't really comment on how they are normally. I don't think I will back because I don't know if I can recover from swigging some rando's drink.

I wanted to try something from the lunch menu, after asking an employee, I was told that lunch starts at 11:30am. So I came back around that time to order. I've been seeing their Big Mack Smash on social media for some time now, and it looks delicious. So I decided to I order their single patty Big Mack Smash, with angus meat and American cheese, on a plant based white bun. I don't care for sesame seeds on buns, and there was no option for a regular burger bun (without sesame seeds), so I chose the non sesame seed vegan bun. I also ordered a side of fries with garlic aioli. The plant based white bun was a little dry and the burger patty was also dry and did not have much flavor. Maybe I should have done a double patty for the burger, since it is a smashed patty and a little too thin for my liking. I felt like I was eating a dry burger bun with mostly lettuce, an occasional pickle and the Mack sauce. I probably will not order the garlic aioli again, it had a sweeter and nutty flavor to it, and I prefer more of a savory aioli. I used to order their Blackened salmon with a side of greens and Spanish rice in their BBQ Ranch flavor style, from their old menu. I do miss that meal, it was so flavorful with the crispy onions to top everything off. But I understand that they made the change to better suit the business and cut back on waste. I probably would not order the big Mack burger again. But I will definitely be back to try something else from the new menu. I've been a customer for over 6 years, and have introduced some of my family members and friends to this restaurant, and we've enjoyed our meals here for that time. I love that there are many vegan and vegetarian options here. Although I am neither, it's a great place for those who have dietary restrictions/preferences. Hopefully I find my new go to menu item soon, but in the meantime I will be ordering and trying many of the other new menu items. This is definitely the place to come if you don't want a typical vegan meal. You'd be like a kid in a candy store, with the amount of options that are here. They also have many non vegan options. Turf, Surf and Earth serves EVERYONE and that is their biggest positive!

I had the grandma's boy, cashew mac n' cheese, and a customizable bowl. The grandma's boy consisted of a fried oyster mushroom, red cabbage, pickles, pepper jack, chipotle mayo, and horseradish on a white bun. This was not bad. The sandwich was filled to capacity, and the sauces were a nice combination along with the crispy cheese. The pickles were good and I wish there were even more added. The fried mushroom just tasted like batter without much from the mushroom, which was really the only negative about this. The mac and cheese was made with a homemade cashew cheese. Texturally, it felt like a traditional mac and cheese, but the sauce threw me off a little. It was more plain than anything. Regarding my bowl, I opted for blackened chicken, quinoa, spring mix, bacon, chickpeas, corn, edamame, and a house Greek dressing. This was nicely put together. The chicken was seasoned and cooked ideally while the Greek dressing really brought everything together. I really enjoyed the bacon pieces as well.

I was looking for a good baguette in my neighborhood for a while. But as simple as a baguette may seem, making a tasty one is an art. I was running some errands when I suddenly felt pekish. I saw on Yelp that there was an "authentic French bakery" nearby and decided, "Why not?" Originally, I was thinking of getting a quiche, but as I got into the store, I decided to switch to an avocado egg sandwich. I am sure quiche is good, but I was impressed by the sandwich. It came on the plate with very fresh salad greens. Greens there fresh and sauce tangy, just what one needs to cut through the richness of avocado and egg. I think I had an entire Avacado cut on it. The avocado itself was just right. But the star of the show, for me, was a baguette! I inhaled the entire dish and asked if they sell baguettes on their own, which they do. The bakery associate told me they just ran out, but they are baking new ones now. If I wait 10-15 minutes, I will get a freshly baked one. I could not believe my lack. There was definitely not enough watermelon, but the salad was huge and quite good; very fresh. That is one thing I can say for sure; the portions are big. The prices are a bit high but you get a good portion. For my dessert, we got the ice cream flight which is 4 flavors of your choosing. We tried the 'Peanut Butter Cup' (very light on flavor, not in your face peanut butter but still good), 'Strawberry Buttermilk' (this was my favorite! So creamy and flavorful), 'Black Raspberry Truffle' (another favorite. HUGE chocolate chunks!) and 'Watermelon Garden Mint Mojito' (Light flavor, but not my favorite. I would not get this again. I tasted mostly mint, not too much watermelon). I would 100% come back if I was in the area and I would recommend. I love any place that has unique ice cream flavors and not just the typical flavors.
