Side note: Shoutouts in particular go to Victor; my waiter for most of the night; whom I had both a good discussion with and also gave some good recommendations. I went to this restaurant on Friday recently after work. They were pretty crowded and was going to be much more crowded later it seems and they said that I (as a solo diner) could have a table as long as they had it back by 7:00 which was fine as an hour was more than enough to try their dishes as I was planning on ordering both my appetizer and entree at the same time. I would say the restaurant is a bit less loud than their sister spot Potluck Club and I almost preferred the atmosphere here and the food I had was tasty with some faults. They have a more unique drink selection compared to most Chinese spots (outside of the cocktail places) and I went with a beer I've never had before from Korea from a brewery called Magpie called the Jeju Rice Lager for $10. Listed as a crisp beer flavored with local orange and tangerine from Jeju Island, it was tasty and it definitely had some tangerine flavor in the back and I would recommend it. I knew what I was getting as my main dish so I asked the waiter what they recommended for an appetizer outside of the cuttlefish due to a presumed allergy. He recommended either the beef tartare or alternatively the Chilled Tofu. I went with the latter and it was excellent and the best dish of the night. For $12, it came with spicy sesame, mizuna, soy pickled shiitake, and cilantro. The portion size was large with a good size piece of firm tofu on the bottom which had a nice texture. The sesame paired well with the tofu and the spicy kick reduced the nutty sweetness and my favorite part of it was actually the pickled mushrooms which added an extra bit of flavor whenever I ate one of them (I'd almost like more of them in the dish.) I would recommend this heavily for a group to split. My main dish was the Chili Crab Noodles for $35 listed as egg noodles, tomatoes, and yellow garlic chives. They recommend you mix the dish together which is definitely necessary as the garlic chives help reduce the sweetness of the sauce. The sauce itself could have used a bit more spice as it was definitely more on the sweet chili end (with the tomatoes adding to it) and I should have probably asked for chili oil as discussed later with the waiter when he asked about the dish. Outside of sweetness, there were tiny pieces of crab in it and unfortunately there was a piece of cartilage in there which has a plasticky texture. I would recommend they add some of the tomalley or alternatively the crab innards/tamale to the dish to add more crab flavor as the sweetness is overpowering or just well tone down the sweet chili flavor. Outside of the sweetness, the noodles had a wonderful chew to them as expected for egg noodles. In short, this was just alright with a bit too many faults to recommend though I like sweet chili enough that I finished it. I would have probably given this place an upper 2 or low 3 rounding to a 3 if I just ordered the noodles. However, the appetizer was excellent, the portion sizes were great for both dishes, and the service was excellent. For those reasons, this place sneaks barely into a mid 3/4 category. I prefer to a good extent their original spot but I would still check this place out. I've also heard very good things about the lobster sticky rice and would probably get that next time as my main or stick with a bunch of appetizers (perhaps the tofu along with the steak tartare and olive yaotiew/youtiao) as they both seem more creative and more flavored. read more

When I heard potluck club owners opened a sister restaurant, I was dying to try it. It has the same retro feel as potluck, but Phoenix palace's menu feels slightly more elevated. We started with the youtiao and I was addicted to the lop churng jam. I could spread that stuff on anything! The duck had a nice crispy skin and cooked perfectly, and the scallop with vermicelli had a nice sear and was so sweet. I also love all their unique beers and natural wines. A great take on elevating Cantonese style cookie. The dishes here are of course delicious. Food was great, but pricey for the portion. Would not recommend bringing whole family / parents unless you're a tourist. This is a spot for a small group of friends or date night. Everything was really good, I don't know where to start. The waitress was friendly and helpful on deciding the amount of dishes to get for our group of 7. The Yaotiew was good, but the "lop churng" jam aka Chinese sausage was delicious; sweet and savory. My fav dish was the lobster sticky rice. The chilled tofu was divine; the duck breast was extremely tender as well as the chicken; chili crab noodles were creamy and had decent chunks of real crab meat. I think I like their sister restaurant Potluck Club better, but I still had a good time here! As soon I walked in, I was immediately greeted with this aroma that reminded me of the large Canto seafood restaurants growing up. We started off with the scallop and vermicelli - their version featured stir-fried vermicelli that had a nice garlic flavor, but some noodles were a little too dry and hard. The scallop was tender but I thought could use some extra salt. While I liked the seasoning of the cuttlefish, I felt like the pieces could have been either chewier vs sliced thinner, or the batter coating could have more thin. The lobster sticky rice was quite interesting! On one hand, it had very familiar ginger/scallion flavors of classic Chinese dish, but on the other, the chewiness of the rice and the crunchy Chinese bacon provided new textures. The lobster pieces were very tender and I loved how much white pepper there is! The ong choy was tasty with the fermented bean curd sauce and garlic; I just wish the portion was bigger!! I enjoyed dining with the red/gold/green theme decor with the traditional Chinese beam headings and lamps, juxtaposed with the wall of 1960s black/white photos. Loved the jukebox that combined various throwback English and Chinese pop songs from various decades. They have a good range of small to bigger tables. I found it a little strange to ask for chopsticks to eat Chinese food, but dishes came out quick and staff were attentive. Overall loved the nostalgia and concept of reinventing classics with modern twists, but food was pricey for their portion sizes and didn't compare to their sister restaurant. read more

New Cantonese restaurant that opened up in Chinatown by the same owners as Potluck club. You can't miss this as they have a bright sign on Bowery street. I would consider this as elevated Cantonese food with more of a modern twist and fusion of ingredients seen in other types of cuisines like Italian. We ordered the: - Olive yaotiew: it is a lot less oily than your typical breakfast yaotiew and a bit more dry. I really enjoyed the fig mostarda dip which was sweet. The lop churng jam was more of a topping with chopped up lop churng. - Chilled Tofu: this is one of my favorites. I really enjoyed the texture and freshness of the tofu. The tofu was more of a dessert texture but not as silken. It paired well with the sesame and mizuna. - Steak Tartare: thought it was interesting to pair this with puffed rice crackers, a bit difficult to eat together since both fall apart. - Salt & pepper cuttlefish: another great dish, was crispy and fresh. I like the chewiness of cuttlefish and it paired well with the tomato jam. Thought the Italian peppers were a nice touch. - Chili crab noodles: this tasted familiar, it was egg knife noodles with a cream tomato sauce. It was like pasta but because of the different type of noodles it really tricked my mind. I really enjoyed this, wouldn't say you can taste the crab as much. - Water spinach: just a really good tasting green I was surprised at how small the menu was but it consist of well thought out dishes, they are planning to add dessert to the menu so excited to see that in the near future. Came here for a friend's birthday dinner (7adults and 2 kids) and they were able to accommodate us with a reservation made via email because it was for 8+ people. There wasn't a lot of options on the menu (12 items) so we ordered all 12 items. I wasn't too wow'ed by most of the dishes but some dishes stood out (chili crab noodles, duck breast, and steak tartare). The portions were not that big and were just enough for 7 adults. New spot by the same people as Potluck Club, and it did not disappoint! We came with a group of 4 for a girls night and ordered a variety with recs from our waitress, who was very helpful! Favorites of the night were definitely the lobster fried rice, olive youtiao with a delicious lop churng jam, and the scallop + vermicelli (but very small) I probably wouldn't get the chili crab noodles or the ong choy next time. FYI, don't be fooled, they have a WHOLE vegetarian menu! And all the dishes our waitress recommended were certified hits (even my meat-eating wife's dishes were hits). OMG!! We had the BEST time at Phoenix Palace. The food is amazing! There should be a 6th star for them. We tried as many things as we could and each dish was creatively inspired and made of the best ingredients. For example, the chicken wings were crispy, but not greasy and they were also meaty, while not having too much excess fat and skin. Perfectly crunchy on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. Then there is the lobster sticky rice. Again, the lobster was fresh and the pieces substantial. The dish itself was flavorful and the rice was cooked perfectly. We also tried loved the olive yaotiew. Again, it was cooked perfectly and the accompanying dipping sauces introduced exciting new flavors to my tastebuds. The sugar snap peas had the same effect. The sauce they were served in was made with anchovies and tasted like nothing I'd ever had before and was wonderful! The pièce de résistance was definitely the duck breast. Perfectly medium rare with a crispy skin and enough wraps for each slice. Here again, I was blown away by the supporting sauce the duck is served with. I can't recall what was in it, but WOW!! As if the awesome food wasn't enough, the service was lovely. The staff is so nice and engaging and the space is comfortable and tastefully designed. Try this place and you will not be disappointed!
