Use to be a regular at this restaurant whenever I visit Chicago but the quality has severely gone down and probably will not be coming back. Located on the second floor, the elevator was out of order already so it was quite inaccessible for elderly but it might be out of their hands. Upon entrance the manager/front greeter was exceptional and greeted us and brought us to a table but since that moment everything went downhill. The food was pretty average and the quality went down. The freshly made vegetables were cold, and the malaysian rolls were over cooked and mushy. The only thing that was good was the pan fried dumplings. What made me not want to come back was the service. Upon asking for a cup of water it took us four waiters and the manager to get us it with attitude as well. To be honest with you, going up the elevator to get to this restaurant was scary but it was a nice detail that it was glass so you could look outside to the rest of Chinatown. This restaurant claims they have the best dim sum in Chicago. I cannot say I agree. The staff was friendly and got us seated right away. We came a little while before the kitchen closed so we were a little rushed to put in an order. We ended up settling on a few dim sum options and mochi. I also got some soup. The food was alright. The hot and sour soup wasn't as flavourful and punchy and I'm used to so that was disappointing. I honestly don't recall what the dumpling were, but we also got the corn and shrimp dumplings and the latter was the tastier of the two. The mochi had wayyyyyy too much flour on it. The taste was alright though. Overall, wasn't the biggest fan and I think I'd try other places before going back. Located on the street directly across the main Chinatown square, Phoenix is a popular spot-- expect a wait especially for weekend dimsum, which is what my friends and I came for. The interior is large, spacious, and decorated simply. Our orders came out pretty fast and the servers were kind. They were attentive in refilling our tea kettles, but never refilled our waters unfortunately. I felt that while all the dimsum dishes were good, the menu selection was a little limited in terms of meats and vegetables, compared to other dim sum places I've tried in the area. There didn't seem to be as many meat options and there were basically no vegetable options besides a stuffed eggplant dish, which wasn't that good in my opinion. Despite that, they made all the other dishes really well--from custard buns to egg tarts (and taro egg tarts) to shumai to crepes. Everything tasted super fresh. We ordered a lot of things (most of them are pictured), but a couple of the standout ones were: - Taro Egg Tarts: delicious and unique; I've never seen this offered at any other dimsum spot I've been to and I lowkey liked it even more than the traditional egg tart. -Steamed Malay Sponge Cake: this is also a pretty unique menu item that I don't commonly see at other dimsum spots, and it was really good, spongey, and flavorful! - Chicken Feet with Homemade Sauce: A dimsum staple, the homemade sauce addition was really good. - Short ribs with pepper: Tasty and well marinated, nicely textured meat. - Beef crepes: I normally don't love crepes, but the beef crepes here were really good in my opinon. Recently came here on a Sunday morning around 10:30am and the place was packed. We realized we were glad we had come 5 minutes earlier because by then there was already a line by the door (and eventually when we left the line was really long to be seated). Expect your typical rude service because the food and experience would not be a rolling cart and circle table family style dim sum without the unfriendly staff! 5/5 for authenticity, lol! As far as the quality of the food - I've definitely had better no doubt. I'm from Southern CA originally, so I know what's good (SGV - Alhambra area peeps know what's up!), but for Chicago dim sum standards I would say this is a solid choice. There's some other choices in Chinatown which I've never been to (at least not at the time of writing this review) and I'd say that because if my experience at Phoenix, I'd still return here. I think they are going on 1 steamer because this spot takes forever. I'm talking 10-20 minute between each dish. All the food came out lukewarm, and the time between dishes came out so slow that we couldn't finish half our food. I guess this was a good thing. Apart from the lovely RBF that you are greeted with by two young girls, you are also only approached by staff if you flag them down with your hands. We returned an order of Shanghai dumplings because there was a piece of fur (multiple little hairs from an animal or something)... and the response was "do you want another one?" Lol... no... The food itself was descent but you have to be in the mood to dine here because service can run you the wrong way if you aren't Chinese (or speak it). I love that you can get dim sum on a weekday for lunch here. It was pretty quiet when I was there so we were able to be seated right away. They have the standard dim sum items. I loved the egg tarts. We had the shrimp dumplings, which are always a classic. The shumai was excellent as well. I wish the seasonings were a bit better because I definitely had to rely on the sauces for extra flavor. Decent dimsum. Came on a Saturday at noon with a party of 8 and was able to sit within 20 minutes while they were pretty busy. The wrappings of some of the dimsum weren't the best, like the shrimp noodle fell apart upon picking it up and the soup dumpling as well. In fact, my most recent experience with Dim Sum was at a large Dim Sum restaurant in Vancouver (BC) that supposedly served authentic Cantonese food, but the flavors there disappointed me. Chicago should be very proud of its Chinatown. It rivals San Francisco's and New York's, and that's saying a tidy sum. On this 60° Sunday night, in Chicago in February, Chinatown was so jammed packed and congested you would think they were giving away free dinners! Wow was this district buzzing. The four of us chose The Phoenix restaurant as our dinner spot only for the mere fact, we've been everywhere else in Chinatown and we wanted to try something new. So we parked three blocks away (I told you it was busy here) arrived at The Phoenix and walked up two flights of stairs to this humongous room with more tables and chairs than most auditoriums. Their menu had some really good looking items, so we ventured into their selections and came out with: * Garlic Cucumber warm salad that was really good * Singapore Rice Noodles which was truly delicious * Saute Squid in an XO sauce that was as far as I was concerned was the star of the show * Spicy Szechuan Chicken with enough heat to get your attention. We all loved this dish * Pea Sprouts which had the perfect crunch - excellent * A slew of Ting Tao beer and a bottle of Hakushika Rice wine The ambiance here at the Phoenix Restaurant, looked and felt like I was in Hong Kong. I came here for the barbecue pork bun with sweet top and yes it is still the best. Sweet and savory delicious. In the same vain is the egg yolk(salted egg) bun surprisingly yummy. I'm not a fan of pot stickers but theres' is so much better than everyone else. So why 4 stars? The service. Two things 1. they don't walk around with the dumplings anymore and that takes away some of the ambiance. 2. the staff is cold and robotic. For Dim Sum, Phoenix is my favorite go to at this moment as the dishes here are pricey but you get a high quality meal out of every dish. For example the beef crepe in other places near here is cheaper but the amount of beef you get does not compare. I rather pay a little more to get a satisfying beef crepe. The service here is pretty good for the amount of tables they have to offer. They have a fairly large menu for dim sum - Just fill out what items you want and hand it to anyone and they will get your food out as quick as they can. Highly recommend you get a seat before peak times. Parking is available in the lots near here and yes - they do validate for $2 for 3 hours. read more

Also the vegetables is so hard and old, again, not answer or solutions. I did not pay for dinner but heard that the crispy chicken was $79! In sane! Most places charge about half of that. TLDR: Solid dim sum for when you need your dumpling fill but they're not The-Best-in-Town joint. Every couple of weeks I get these really strong cravings for some good pork siu mai and turnip cake...and chicken feet!...And xiaolongbaos and egg tarts!!! I literally fantasize about stuffing my face with egg tarts on a weekly basis. Before I even realize it, I'm zooming down Lake Shore Drive on my way to Chinatown. Now, my go-to dim sum joint in Chicago has always been Ming Hin just bc there's one in the South Loop and Streeterville; and they've got some great dumplings too. Today, however, I thought we should try a different joint (also with great reviews); either Phoenix, Cai, or Triple Crown. I gotta say, the lotus leaf sticky rice was pretty damn good. The spare ribs tasted different than the usual spare ribs with black bean sauce I order at Ming Hin, but not in a bad way at all. The turnip cake was nice and crispy on the outside (without being super oily) and fluffy on the inside. Yum. The xiaolongbao was tasty but nothing to write home about and the siu mai lacked a little something I call the "porky stench" (which is what I think makes pork siu mais particularly delicious). All in all, I'd eat here again but not before I try Triple Crown or Cai. read more

I've been wanting to come here for a long time. Parking can be an issue, but there is the $2 lot a block down. A little confusing, when you enter you have to go upstairs to the 2nd floor and the door has a different name on it. Once inside, I was greeted, but it was absolutely freezing inside! Maybe 55-60 degrees, brrr . It was only ten degrees outside as a side note. I'm tough and I was hungry so it was not going to detour me!!. The food is very pricey, but the portions are much bigger than those in the area, so it off sets it. Very tasty and hot! Sadly the food didn't stay hot very long and I had to eat with my jacket on. Thankfully the service was prompt and attentive so I didn't have to freeze my butt off! The decor and colors are very vibrant and lovely! Phoenix was recommended by a friend who's a Chicago native, so we had to try it! It's right across the street from the Chinatown plaza, so it's pretty hard to miss. We came in on a Sunday, the day before Labor Day around 1:15 and were told that the wait would be 45 minutes- 1 hr. They earned a Michelin star in 2018 and 2019, so it has to be worth the wait right ? They gave us a ticket number and they require you to be present when they call your number because they will not take your number down nor will they call your phone. Their style is pretty OG which can be a headache because of the limited space without a proper waiting area. We ended up walking around Chinatown for a bit, and even though we got back around 30 minutes after we were put on the list, the host wouldn't seat us because our number passed. We still ended up getting sat since a friend of ours argued about it with the host. Another thing that we found out at that time was that they weren't gonna take anymore orders at 2 or 2:30 (do they usually do that???) so we had to hurry and order all the dim sum we wanted. The wait and trouble was pretty worth it :') they were out of a few things that we wanted, but we over ordered anyway so it worked out for us in the end. The food was tasty, fresh, and the servers were pretty attentive with refilling our waters, pre-bussing, and bringing extra sauces upon request. Since we did order a lot of food, we kept having to remind them about a few things that never came out. Of course the steamed spare ribs with black bean sauce took the longest to come out, but it's sooo worth because it's one of my favorite dim sum items! Highly recommend coming here, but it is still your typical Chinese family owned restaurant after all, so the service isn't gonna be A1 and you might catch an attitude from the host who's probably the daughter and has no choice but to work there lol. First time here with my girlfriend and her parents. I gotta give this place 5-stars. I am not Chinese so can't comment on whether this is authentic Cantonese dishes - but they're from HK so I'll take their word for it! The portions here are large - we ordered the pepper steak (very very... like very tender), tofu mushrooms with Chinese peapods (amazing and almost my favorite), salt and pepper fish (crispy fried and not fishy), and scallops with noodles (amazing and my favorite). It was way more than enough and we took the rest to go. The food comes out pretty fast and I like that there are plenty of accommodations for large groups and tables for two. At the moment, Phoenix Restaurant has a 3.5 star average, which is puzzling. This is an excellent, authentic dim sum spot -- easy 5 stars. Not much else to say. Coming from the SF Bay Area, I can't remember the last time I went to a Chinatown for dim sum. Parking is validated for the Chinatown lot - $2 for 3 hours. Ordering is by picture menu/paper rather than the traditional carts being pushed around. We got the usual favorites: shrimp dumplings (xia jiao), shu mai, spare ribs, egg tarts, mala cake, shrimp chang fen, daikon radish cake, chicken rice in lotus leaf, chicken feet, and tofu skin wrapped around veggies. Everything was fresh, properly seasoned, not overly salted. Pro tip: ask for mustard and hot sauce on the side. Come early! We got here around 10:20am on a Sunday, and were able to get a table, but by 11am, there was a huge crowd and a line waiting down the stairs. read more
