We came here for a late lunch and this place was packed on a Thursday. We had to wait about 20 minutes for a table and they gave us the table that was at the entrance being stared at by other patrons waiting to get their table. The service was ok, but could use improvements. It took a while for someone to actually take our drink and food orders. Once we ordered, it felt like a lifetime before our food actually started coming in. Despite the slow service, the dim sum here was phenomenal. Items we ordered: Steamed beef ball: probably my least favorite. It had a unique texture that I wasn't a fan of and had onions mixed in. Short rib w/ black pepper sauce: This was a good dish. Short ribs were cooked perfectly. The meat was very tender and sweet Shanghai Xiao Long Bao: Definitely some of the best Xiao long baos I've had. Bbq pork bun: these were also tasty. It came with sweet bbq pork inside a steamed bun. Fried sticky rice with mix meat: Rice was good mixed with meat, the rice was soft and very flavorful. Potstickers: These potstickers were very tasty. They were huge and well stuffed. Overall some decently priced dim sum with excellent flavors. Wouldn't mind returning whenever I'm craving dim sum. read more

I came for lunch on a Sunday with 9 friends to celebrate Chinese New Year. The restaurant was packed when we arrived and were seated without too much of a wait. We received a paper menu with images on it to mark our order. The servers were quick to come over and get our drinks. Food was very reminiscent of my time living in China and I found many of my favorites on the menu. Overall, it was of the quality I expected and was an authentic meal that I previously had in China, not our Americanized Chinese food. I got my usual items like spare ribs with black beans, shrimp crepes, chicken fingers in the red sauce, turnip cake, sticky rice in lotus leaf, and shumai. They were basically the same quality or less than Cai, another dim sum restaurant in Chinatown. Shrimp crepes quickly fell apart when I picked them up and did not have diced celery, a common ingredient to this dish. Turnip cake's texture and flavor tasted off. We also got pork belly which was dry but saved by it's fat layer. Servers did not remove our finished plates the whole time. I had to wave someone over to ask for the check and to-go box. read more

They give you a ticket with your number in line, and you can leave and then come back later around your estimated time. They validate parking ($2 for 3 hours) for the big Chinatown lot. You order by writing the number of each item you want on a printed out menu with photos. Prices are not displayed, but I believe M = $4.25, L = $4.55, and XL = $4.95. Tea is $0.80 per person, and they refilled our tea and water very frequently. We ordered: 1. Ha Gao (L) ($4.55) - skins are too sticky and stuck to each other and the paper and ripped. The shrimps inside are plump and firm. 10. Noh Mai Gao (rice in lotus leaf) (L) ($4.55) - average. Rice wasn't that sticky. 31. BBQ Pork crepe (M) ($4.25) - normal. 61. Everything was pretty standard here; ordered the Beef tripe with ginger and onion, Noh mai gai, BBQ Rib, Taro Custard Tart, Fu pei guen, and Goji and Vegetable Dumpling. The two unique items that I have had here are the Taro Custard Tart and Goji Vegetable Dumpling. The Taro Custard Tart was good, and I can taste the taro. We'd heard a lot of great things about Phoenix Dim Sum and decided to try it out! The restaurant itself is nice and clean, and as a bonus they validate parking at the nearby lot. The staff was very friendly and communicative. The food itself was pretty tasty overall, but not my favorite dim sum in Chicago. The steamed custard bun was really tasty, had a great texture to the bun, and a nice lightly sweet custard inside. The chicken feet were a great texture (not too soft and not too crunchy), but we're slightly lacking in flavor. The fried chicken dumpling (ham sui gok) had a good flavor and a great tasting filling, but was too oily for my tastes. The pan fried turnip cake was a great texture and flavor, and one of our favorite items in the meal. We also tried the Siu Mai which was pretty good, but similar to the chicken feet, was not quite flavorful enough. As a whole it was an enjoyable meal, and a great option if you're trying dim sum for the first time, since a lot of the staff spoke English and were very accommodating. I have eaten at the restaurant in Chinatown over a year ago and am writing this review in the context of covid ordering takeout. We ordered online on their website which I will point out could use some improvement. Not user friendly in terms of finding and navigating the dim sum menu. There are no descriptions or images so for some items in Cantonese they may be difficult to discern. Food overall (6.5/10): I know this may be harsh for those who eat here frequently but again this is takeout not dine in (7.5/10). Imo dim sum shouldn't be eaten takeout but if you need that fix you gotta do what you gotta do. Everything was "good" but with every bite you can't help but tell in the taste that it's a little soggy from the condensation from the boxes. It's like between leftover and dine in quality. It's like fries left in the bag too long. I understand that this is completely out of the restaurant's control but objectively speaking that is my impression. Brief impression of items: Everything was good/standard. I will say the bbq pork bun which along with the egg yolk bun is a highlight for me dine in kinda fell short this time. I think mainly bc of sogginess. The fu pei guan (tofu roll) was on the saltier side. The sprout with Japan tofu crepe was just something ordered out of curiosity. It was sort of refreshing as sprouts and tofu would provide but wouldn't recommend at least for takeout. Value: I always talk about value since I have 0 income. Every dish was about $6. Not value but fair. For the images I posted it came out to about $22 per person (3 people). Again I understand everything is not as good takeout but for me with dim sum the impact was slightly more. Be warned: if you are looking for a traditional push cart dim sum restaurant, this is not that type of place, but the food is good! You receive a menu with photos of all the usual dim sum offerings and you order what you would like. However, you are supposed to order what you would like all at once, which I wasn't a big fan of. I'm sure you could order more but it seemed like ordering everything at once was how things normally go. We ordered short ribs, shu mai, xiao long bao (soup dumplings), shrimp crepe, fried rice, chicken feet, chao xiao bao (pork buns), and bar gow (shrimp dumplings). They all came out at various times, on a cart, and were served hot. Although I prefer a push cart restaurant, so that we are able to order as we go and decide how much food we want as we go, I was pleased with my experience here. The food was good and the service was timely and attentive. We definitely ordered more food than we needed but we took the rest of it to go! We did find out towards the end that SOME items are available with push cart service but in the hour and a half that we were there, only one cart came by asking if we wanted friend chicken wings or bbq pork. Came for a wedding, which was fine, sure, but was impressed with some of the delicious food. In exchange for our cash gift, we got a 13 course meal and a ridiculous amount of alcohol. Overall the food and service were really good for it being a wedding. Our favorites were the "balls" broccoli beef, fried fish, walnut shrimp, and "fried" chicken. The beef is really good and tender cuts. The chicken isn't your normal americanized fried chicken but very moist. Who knows why the shrimp comes with walnuts but this like a better version of mayo shrimp (the best item that is usually at asian buffets). The fried crab claws were good but it is mostly shrimp with a little crab in the inside. The shrimp scallop taro nest is their take on a taco bowl. Probably the least necessary item as with normal taco bowls. Chicken corn soup is just basically chicken-y egg drop with some corn. The ginger scallion double lobster is good but im biased against it since it doesnt have a lot of meat and my asian mom makes a better version. The fried rice and yimian noodles were normal, no reason to spend more than a bite on them when we had 11 different items. Mango pudding was more like a jello, meh. Some people at our table were amazed with the sesame balls but I've had much better, could use more red bean and was a little tough. Was great  that we got to take the leftovers from the table home. Fingers crossed on no food poisoning since we didnt stumble in until around 1am to put it in the fridge. Wait staff was attentive and bartenders were great. Entertaining, had big ice, and somehow convinced us to let them pour us lots of fancy alcohol. Very good quality food, would definitely come back for a normal meal. read more

The dim sum experience is always so hit or miss. You have to eat with the right people otherwise you'll be left craving something specific because you know the others at your table won't like. Also, the restaurant has to be busy so all of the dim sum is constantly fresh but not too busy to where if you need more tea you have to wait 2 years before you find someone to help you. Phoenix impressed me both in service and in taste. To be quite honest, I came with my non-Asian friends and am not sure if that made a difference in our extra service. I would say perhaps since we were all given a tall glass of water the moment we sat down. A quick glance around the restaurant and it was obvious we were the only table that got water. We ordered a massive amount of dim sum for 6 people and the total came out to a little over $100, which is insane. The favorites for me were the bbq spare ribs (came out on a cart and wasn't on the menu), rice crepe with Chinese donut and all of the dumplings. Seriously, the shu mai was the size of my head. The taste and flavor for all of the dim sum were perfect and tasted like it was made with excellent ingredients. Pro tip: Come here at 10 am on Saturdays and Sundays and thank me later. read more

I live overseas and each year for several decades come to Chicago for the summer months. One of favorite restaurants is the Phoenix in Chinatown. We have family visiting from overseas that arrived in Chicago yesterday and we decided to take them to this restaurant last night for dinner. I called in the late morning to make the reservation. Upon arriving at the restaurant, there was a sort of convention of Chinese people working in the medical domain. The presentations were very loud and we were placed behind a sort of cloth divider that did not muffle the sound of the proceedings a few meters away. We asked the head server to be moved and he said there was no other place to go, which visually did not seem to be the case, as at the far end of the restaurant several tables that could accommodate our group were available. Further, the serving staff was concentrating on the large group associated with the convention and we were clearly neglected with regards to our orders and several had to be repeated in order to get served. I asked the head server when things would end with regards to the presentations, and he said in about 10 minutes. About 40 minutes latter, things had not calmed down, one of our guests that was close to a speaker developed a headache, and we were unable to talk between us due to all of the noise. What a shame that the person taking my reservation did not warn us of what was going to unfold that evening. We really had an unenjoyable meal, the head waiter was not particularly respectful, and we will not return to this restaurant nor suggest it to friends and family members. read more

Because of COVID-19, we write down the number of each dim sum on the menu for each table, then staff served us them by wagon. So it's very clean and assuring. Each dim sum was good. Our family of 6 went. When we got there, a sign was on the door that they were closed until 5 - it was 4:30. I assume they were getting ready for the dinner crowd maybe? When we returned, we waited 5 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. The host was not friendly. She did not greet us, only asked how many. The server rushed us to give our orders. We got there around 10am on a Saturday from Michigan so we totally forgot there was a time difference. We found street parking in the back of the Chinatown Plaza. You have to download an app and pay online or pay at the machine which we couldn't find. The restaurant, like many dim sum restaurants in Chicago is on the 2nd floor. We didn't have a wait since we where there right as they opened. You order from a pictured menu. This is a little different from the traditional carts that they push around and you point to what you want. Maybe they did this because of Covid? I do t mind it because I know what I wanted to order. They food came out quite quick which we appreciated because we drove 3 hrs and were starving. Very basic traditional dim sum. Service: FAST to get the food out but we did have to hunt down someone to give us the check. Overall, good experience. Clean restaurants. Most of the employees still wore masks. read more

I have tried both dim sum and dinner many times over the past 30 years. Owners have changed hands several times. Phoenix used to be my favorite place to go for dim sum, but over the years the quality, execution, and consistency of the dishes have gotten worse. They do some things very well still such as shu mai, har gow (shrimp dumplings), steamed pork ribs with black bean and garlic sauce, egg tarts, seasame balls, and custard buns. Everything else is just average and for the price they charge per dim sum plate is not worth it compared to other places in Chinatown. I am also disappointed that they no longer make milk egg tarts which were just out of this world. For a full dim sum meal, it will cost about $35/head after tax and tip, which is very pricey compared to all the other options in the vicinity. As for dinner, I've been here for mostly banquet family style meals. Everything is always overcooked so the meats are often tough and dry and the veggies are limp and too soft. As for regular dinner menu items outside of banquets, Phoenix does a decent job. However, the Chinese food here will set you back about $40/per person for a full meal. In short, I won't be the one recommending or taking the initiative to dine here. But I know I'll return because Chinese people love holding banquets meals here for celebrations because of the higher end service, cleanliness and better atmosphere. TIP: Phoenix offers parking validation for the nearby lots ($2 for 3 hours), so make sure you bring your parking ticket with you. read more

So far, this is the closest restaurant to an authentic dim sum experience (missing the carts). Like most "authentic" Chinese restaurants, the vibe is going to feel pretty tacky (and usually red) and pretty basic. Coming in here gave me flashbacks to when I used to live in nyc's Chinatown. There's a very traditional feel here so i wouldn't be surprised if I saw a Chinese wedding take place here one day. However, the food was pretty decent (which is usually the typically the focus). There wasn't any dim sum carts which felt missing from the nostalgia the rest of the place brings. However, it was different from most of the other dim sum places. Just typical and seemed like your cookie cutter dim sum type of place. At least some of the choices were unique so I'll definitely come back when I'm feeling a bit more adventurous. read more

So I have that friend that just occasionally craves food and needs it immediately. We usually go to Minghin, but that wasn't happening today. She wanted to eat earlier and they didn't start serving dim sum until 9pm. It was interesting trying to find all day dim sum places, but places do exist and that's great. Phoenix isn't a part of the mall, but very near it and easy to get to with plenty of parking options nearby. Phoenix is located on the 2nd floor of the building and is quite unassuming until you enter the restaurant. Then, it feel quite spacious. The service was fine; it's, more or less, what you'd expect from a Chinese restaurant. The decor is a little dated. The chairs all had nice golden cloth covers over them. I'm not going to lie, but it was kind of nice, strangely enough. It definitely fit for being a part of what you imagined Chinatown is. We were seated in a nice corner table with their full menu, a small dim sum menu and the drinks menu. Tea and water were brought out immediately. Wasn't super hungry, so just got a couple dishes: Shu Mai - fairly large, pretty spot on for shu mai and pretty good Diced chicken and salted fish fried rice - this is one of my favorite dishes, but I probably wouldn't order it again. The diced chicken were kind of large, which isn't a bad thing...it's just that there were a couple of under cooked pieces and the fish wasn't overly salty, which is one of the surprises I kind of enjoy when I get this dish. Otherwise, the fried rice part was actually pretty good and served well as left overs Stir Fried Bok Choy in garlic - this was spot on and hit the spot, perfectly cooked and not over done. TLDR: it's a decent spot in Chinatown...and they serve all day dim sum, though a limited menu. Great prices for drinks though. read more

Love this place. My dear friend, and I go here couple of times a year. We stay for several hours, enjoying the different tastes of dim sum. Staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. The place is very clean and staff are right on task of assisting customers. Host/Hostess are extremely welcoming. The ambience looks like a banquet hall and its on the 2nd floor. It was my first time eating at a Chinese restaurant using a Lazy Susan for a Business dinner and I have to say how impressed I was! We had a private room and everything was great. We were probably around 10 of us and fit in comfortably in the room. The food that was served to us ranged from chicken to pork to beef and very nicely flavored. The chrysanthemum tea that served was delicious and I was impressed with the quantity of food that was brought to us. We also shared plenty of wine and they had some good ones! Besides the private room, I saw a few other lazy Susans in the common area so one can chose to bring a big group and do a get together there as well. The customer Service was great too. They attended to us in a timely manner and took care of our order well. I would be happy to recommend this to all my friends who want to try traditional Chinese food in China town in Chicago! Compared to Cai and triple crown, I would rate: Phoenix -1st Triple Crown-close 2nd, Cai- 3rd but still good. This is in terms of food quality, selection and service. The only down side is sometimes the wait can be longer at phoenix versus tc or cai. Some of my favorite dishes are: chicken feet, ha gao (shrimp dumpling), bean curd aka tofu skin, stuffed eggplant, stir fry noodles w/beef and congee with preserved egg and pork.
