My son and I made it after a much anticipated grand opening. We happened by the night before grand opening and were turned away as it was a private soft opening. We returned for the grand opening but had to abort our place in line due to the long wait. However it was so much fun to watch the lion dance and ribbon cutting. We even saw ourselves in the line later from the drone footage covering the opening : ) But after a couple of days, we finally made it back and secured the goods. Do you want pho? Could you drive north on Rt. 29 12~15 minutes and get Pho La Cay instead? No? Well then, I have bad news for you. Pho Wheels is cute when you get it from the truck. But when you get it here at the brick and mortar joint, you will be disappointed. (Btw, I've tried their Crystal City location, which is better, but not by much) Love the decor. But the server didn't look like I was welcome. The pho... the broth is meh at best, watery at worst. It comes out in a tall paper bowl. The temperature of the broth is high, which is good. But because the bowl is narrow and tall you cannot switch the position of the noodles from the bottom to top. As some of you might know, some pho places give you raw eye of round slices. When you put the meat in the broth, it can be pushed down to the bottom if you want it cooked more. 1. At Pho Wheels, due to the shape of the bowl, the noodles will be stuck at the bottom and become overcooked. A mushy mess. 2. They put the bean sprouts already in the soup. They assume I will eat the bean sprouts in the soup. Bean sprouts have a very distinct flavor, which can distract from the pho broth. I eat it separately similar to pickled ginger and sushi. (On the other hand, sometimes I eat Bún bò Huế with the bean sprouts in the broth because of stronger flavor profiles) 3. No sauce bottles. You need to ask for extra sriracha and hoisin sauce packets. They will give you two packets at a time. And the server will give you the dirty eye. 4. For some it might be worth it. But supreme pho, which comes with all the beef cuts they have including oxtail (tripe and tendons not available (sigh), and some of their meat is gamey (yuck) which is a big NO NO, and the broth does nothing to mitigate this issue), is (drum roll....) $25 before tax. Seriously, why spend more and get less? Why not make a weekend trip to Eden Center? Or take the Orange/Silver Line to Pho 75 in Rosslyn? Well, because they are far. But Pho La Cay or An Loi/Pho Dat Thanh are close enough. Adding one star because the rice dish is way better than the pho. Maybe the place should be called Cơm phần Wheels? But it doesn't have the same ring to it. read more

Phowheels is fantastic! I was visiting a friend in Laural, coming from the California Bay Area where Vietnamese food is plentiful and top tier. This place absolutely ranks up there with the best spots in California... mind you I've spent 41 years in the bay area, growing up eating Vietnamese food from restaurants and my Vietnamese friends' houses alike. Most "Fusion" establishments commonly slap 2 different styles of cuisine together haphazardly and often times, do not coalesce. Every dish I tried at Phowheels tasted like these foods have long since existed in the culinary zeitgeist. The Chicken wings had a satisfying, shattering crunch to them and a delicious, unique flavor that you would not be able to find readily anywhere else in the area. The Oxtail Fries were ABUNDANT with oxtail meat piled high, succulent and tender. My fork kept gravitating to this dish, shoveling more and more into my stomach. The Pho broth was crystal clear and packed with so much flavor. Every sip reminded me of cold winters at my friend's house being served their grandmothers pho they had been making for 12 hours. Nostalgic and comforting. I appreciated that it was served ready to take home. I had so much food, I wasn't able to finish it. Popping on a lid and walking out was extremely convenient. I kept chewing but that didn't help. I've never had brisket this tough before. Considering the portion and the battle to eat the brisket it is overpriced. Maryland has so many pho restaurants and I can almost guarantee they will have better pho. I also had the tacos and they were really good. Very interesting and well executed take on tacos. I would recommend it and order it again. The service was a bit slow when I went but that may be due to them just opening up. They had some items out of stock so I would come again to see how it is. The store itself is beautiful with all that wall art. Their menu is exciting with pho, banh mi, tacos and more. They even have a kids menu. We got the combo pho and the shaky beef banh mi with a fried egg. Their pho soup doesn't taste like your classic pho broth but it was clean and delicious and came with plenty bean sprout and red onions. The banh mi was amazing! Super flavorful and filling.
