On a lazy visit in SF, North Beach Cantina was a perfect option for delivery at night. The big winner for me here actually was the chips, so much so that I had to order them a second time on a short trip. Chips are so well-seasoned that you could eat them alone even without any sauce (but I am not mad about pairing it with guac or the ceviche). For 12.50, you can get a supersized California burrito. Given it is almost the same price as a Chipotle burrito (hate comparing apples and oranges, but it's top of mind reference right now in this fast casual dominated world), I'd say it is great value. Wow! We just came in for a quick lunch, and had a hankering for tacos before we leave the west coast, did not expect what was probably the best tacos we had outside of Cabo! The place has a large bar, and seating area between it and the kitchen, order at the bar and take a seat, we got the fish tacos and the shrimp tacos, both were top tier, and come with a helping of lime, guac and salsa. The Baja fish tacos are amazing. Maybe the best battered fish taco I've had in NorCal. The fish was very flavorful and flaky. The lime slaw cut through any potential oilyness in the batter. Topping it off with the salsas made it peak. I gotta talk about the California burrito though. The soggyness of the fries nearly wrecked the whole thing. Just mush. I had my reservations about NB Cantina when they first opened. I was such a fan of Don Pisto's, & thought they'd prove to be too much competition. And, there was the fact that this space previously housed Tacolicious. I questioned the logic of closing one Mexican restaurant to replace it with another Mexican restaurant. But, I'm glad I was wrong. This airy space goes so well with Mexican food & margaritas. On a sunny & warm day it's a perfect marriage. The look & feel is upscale casual, not hole in the wall taqueria, & isn't that a welcome change? Now, the food. Not only do they make a stellar guac, the house salsas are all great too. The carnitas are first rate. The sopes remind me of the ones that Guaymas in Tiburon (now Michael Minna's The Bungalow Kitchen) used to serve, & that's certainly a good thing! The chicken chili verde is superb, perfect on a San Francisco chilly day. The tacos are a few notches above any small neighborhood taqueria. And the burritos more than aptly rival that big chain mission taqueria that's just a few blocks away. They (smartly) offer both mission & California style. My family and I came here for dinner after my mom found it online. We accidentally came very close to their closing time but they kept seating many groups after us. The staff were nice and answered questions we had. My brother ordered a carnitas burrito, I got birria tacos, and my mom got a Caesar salad with salmon. We sat outside and our food was brought to us pretty quickly, and the workers offered to turn on the heaters for us. I was blown away by their quality, healthy, and colorful food set-up. The staff that delivered the breakfast were organized and conscientious. I marveled at how they carefully displayed everything. North Beach Cantina's breakfast meat/and non-meat options looked incredible and they were well portioned. It was a perfect breakfast for those with dietary preferences. Attendees could easily customize their own bowls - complete with an array of homemade sauces/salsas. In addition to their DIY set-up, they also had tasty ready-to-go burritos. The real stand-out though was their fruit bowls. Works of art! The berries in the colorful bowls were robust and perfectly ripe and they even had dragon fruit in there! I freaking loved the breakfast we had catered here during a work conference. Maybe I was super hungry because I had been up since 5 am, or maybe it was from all the full days stacked together, but most likely it's because the food here is so damn good! They had several breakfast burrito options, clearly labeled and cut in half so you could mix and match. I just went with one with bacon, eggs, and whatever else was loaded in. I also piled up guac and some five-star hot sauces that I thought about stashing away into my suitcase, they were that good. There were fixings for breakfast tacos, burritos, chips and dips... it was all so wonderful. One of the burritos was impossible chorizo, and I couldn't help but give it a try!
