First visit : Impressive! Great live jazz near the front door in the window. Wednesday nites. Sat at the bar with my buddy that lives down the street and another friend visiting from Minneapolis. The bartender, Katrina was awesome! She is a definite top notch mixologist with a terrific personality and an abundance of +NRG! Putting the "craft" into craft cocktail. A real joy to watch her work. We had a couple of pizzas to absorb the cocktails which were a bit like pre-made frozen crust with toppings added (?) Will have a real meal next time. This could have been a great experience, because the food itself was honestly excellent. The mussels and penne al matricciana were both genuinely delicious. That's the reason this review gets three stars instead of zero. Unfortunately, everything around the food was frustrating and unnecessarily stressful. I made a 10:00 PM reservation through OpenTable. The restaurant's own public website stated they were open until 10 PM, and OpenTable confirmed the reservation by email, so naturally I assumed I was fine. Because I've been burned by this exact scenario before at other restaurants, I proactively called while driving to confirm everything. Good thing I did -- at around 9:47 PM I was told the restaurant was effectively closed because the kitchen shuts down at 9:50 PM. To their credit, they did allow me to place my order over the phone while I was driving so they could prepare it before the kitchen closed. Otherwise I would have arrived with a confirmed reservation and no food service available. The problem is that none of this should require negotiation in the first place. If your kitchen closes at 9:50 PM, don't allow 10:00 PM reservations on OpenTable. Customers should not have to guess hidden operational rules that directly contradict the posted reservation availability and the restaurant's own posted business hours. When I arrived, the restaurant was mostly empty except for a couple of tables finishing up. I walked in and saw my meal already plated and waiting for me at the table. For a second, I honestly felt like Don Corleone walking into a private dinner setup, and I remember thinking, "Okay... this just got a lot better." But then it slowly got worse again. Despite having a confirmed reservation and sitting down for a full meal, I couldn't order a glass of wine, a soft drink, coffee, or literally any beverage because "the bar was closed." Nobody checked in beforehand to ask if I wanted anything before shutting everything down. So despite having a confirmed reservation, I essentially got rushed end-of-night partial service with no beverage options at all. The strange part is that the staff themselves seemed to acknowledge the issue. When I questioned why a 10 PM reservation was even offered if the kitchen closed at 9:50, the response was basically an exasperated "I know, I know," as if everyone understood the system made no sense but nobody could fix it. Again: the food itself was excellent. The kitchen clearly knows what it's doing. But the reservation management and late-night customer experience were badly mishandled. If the restaurant cannot realistically provide a normal dining experience at 10 PM, the reservation simply should not be offered. read more

Made a reservation for 7:20pm on Wednesday since those are their Live Jazz nights! So happy we came in to see the artists, it definitely added to our dinner experience! Service: 10/10, the food comes out super quick and the waiters are super attentive! Ambiance: On Wednesdays 10000/10 due to the live performers! Inside feels like a small blend of Italy/Toscana SF vibes Food: 8/10, extremely tasty SCALLOP potatoes that we got with our chicken entree. Came here to celebrate a friends dinner on a Saturday evening 30 mins before closing. The restaurant was dimly lit and super vibey. The service was also super quick and everyone was very friendly and accommodating. We ordered apps, wine and champagne to share. The fried Monterey calamari was really good, crispy and perfectly battered. My friend really enjoyed the burrata cheese over crostini. The Brussel sprouts and shishito peppers were pretty solid. My favorite was the wild arugula salad. It was so fresh, flavorful and perfectly balanced all the fried and cheesy foods we ordered. I will definitely be getting this salad next time. Portobello ravioli (5/5): This was creamy pesto sauce with cherry tomatoes and feta. I loved it. It wasn't too heavy or cheesy. The feta wasn't overpowering either. I love a mushroom. We came here for dinner on New Year's Eve and we all really liked it! We ordered Shishito peppers, which were surprisingly spicy and delicious, and the wild arugula salad to start. I rarely order pasta. My go-to is usually some sort of fish entrée, but I decided it was the last day of the year, why not try a giant plate of carbonara and eat every last bit? So I did, and I had no regrets... until I tried my boyfriend's Penne All'Amatriciana, which he may or may not have added meatballs to. It was the last stop of the night on New Year's Eve so my memory is a little foggy. Not only am I not a positive person but I am also not a tiramisu person, but that didn't stop me from ordering the tiramisu. And it was delicious. I thought I ordered a Manhattan, but when I looked at the pictures, it looks like I ordered some sort of champagne cocktail. It's all coming back to me, but not really. Even several drinks in, I'm still confident that I was happy with this final meal of the year. The service was great. Our server was very friendly and attentive. The only negative of the night was that we had a table right by the door and I was pretty cold whenever the door was opened. Overall, a great experience. I'm giving them a five because I was happy with my experience and food. There's such a cozy, old-school Italian vibe that just feels right. I love the separate bar area and the great energy throughout the restaurant. The service is top-notch, and the atmosphere is lively without being overwhelming. There was a big group celebrating in the back and a couple on a first date next to us--such a fun mix. We started with the calamari, which was delicious. I had the arugula salad with oranges and beets, and he ordered the chicken Parmesan with broccoli, spinach, carrots, and scalloped potatoes. It's like, creamy, delicate. Tastes so fresh and pairs nicely with the balsamic reduction and cherry tomatoes on crostini. - linguine carbonara - I've had basically all the pastas on the menu but somehow this one slipped by me until I had it recently. So freaking good that I knew I wanted to order it this time around. Cooked with pancetta, scallions, mushrooms, and green peas in a rich cream sauce that perfectly coats the noodles. Well seasoned too. - spinach gnocchi - one of their iconic dishes. The gnocchi features spinach in the dough and are the perfectly dense, chewy dumpling in a rich gorgonzola cream sauce - penne all'amatriciana - always my go-to pasta. Penne with mild Italian sausage, red onion, tomato, and spinach in a garlic white wine sauce. A little bit of heat and a little bit of acid that goes so well together. read more

Wow, this place is such a hidden gem and is very underrated. First of all, if you're looking for a cute and cozy Italian spot this is the perfect choice. They even have live jazz on Wednesday nights. All the stuff is super friendly and I got the pleasure to meet the owner Abo, who is so personable and attentive. I really enjoyed all the dishes that I had so it's hard for me to describe my favorites, but if I had to pick, I would definitely say the Portobello pesto ravioli was a highlight for me. Upon arriving the front booths and small tables face the street sunny and bright. There is a nice bar to the left you can enjoy your food at. Started with a glass of Chianti (note: only a few wines listed for single glass, mostly by the bottle). The menu has been shortened (one page listing appetizers/ egg dishes?/and pastas). Chose a pasta dish that was a bowl of spaghetti with few veggies and a pasta sauce that was okay. My fellow diners chose Chicken Marsala which was funny cause one diner "woofed" his plate down and pointed out to our server that the dish was delicious BUT the diner next to him barely ate hers and quietly mentioned it wasn't that good! There you go folks same dish diners sitting side by side and two completely different reviews. That's a Yelp! Our last diner ordered a Burger and loved it. Every time I go to a concert at the regency ballroom I come here. The staff is very kind and the food is always tasty! I love the apps and the pizza. Nice ambiance, not overly crowded or noisy. A little bit too dark inside at some spots that you'll need a cellphone to be able to see what's on the menu - adding some table lamps would be great. Food is very good. The bread, garlic, and olive oil tastes different than most Italian restaurants I've been. Instead of using roasted garlic they use pickled garlic, which gives a really refreshing flavor to the dish. 10/10 The mussels dish is fine. To be honest it doesn't smell like the freshest mussels I've had, so I was a bit worried when I started eating them. But they taste fine and I haven't got sick from eating them so I suppose they are fine. And I do like the white wine sauce a lot. 7/10 Lamb shank - love it. Sauce is just amazing, and the lamb is stewed for so long the flavor is completely in the meat and it's becoming so tender. Highly recommended. 9/10 Chicken Marinara - didn't like it quite as much. Again they make the sauce very delicious. But I just don't like the texture of the chicken breast meat. I was recommended by a local so I took the suggestion & glad I did. It's a cozy, busy little spot on Polk Street. Very welcoming the moment you step foot inside. And the live music by Anna & Frank added to the ambiance. You can sit at the bar or a table. I decided to forgo pasta & had the carpaccio with a glass of house wine( a generous pour)& a side of bread(yes you're charged for French bread ) I also saved space for a really good tiramisu, it was outstanding. Notes: most days they have live music. They also have a Happy Hour on weekdays with a few bucks off their regular prices. And another thing I enjoyed was the filtered water they bring to the table in a large water bottle. Needed a last-minute dinner reservation, and my friend booked this place! It's super cute with great service for a large group. We started with the bruschetta, which was good but nothing special. I got two Aperol spritzes, while others in my group chose different cocktails or wine. Now, the spinach gnocchi was amazing. The gnocchi was chewy and delicious, and the sauce was incredible. I added chicken, which was perfectly grilled. This dish alone was amazing and something I'd absolutely come back for. Second time dining here and I got the same thing I had before, the October 2024- Spaghetti Bolognese. Ground beef, tomato sauce and herbs make for a very tasty dish served generously portioned. There's a certain type of casual Italian restaurant I fear is going extinct in San Francisco. That's because my favorites keep closing, convivial spots like Stelline's in Hayes Valley or Capp's Corner in North Beach. I was hoping this bar cafe on Polk might fall into this cozy category. Unfortunately, despite producing reasonably good food, it didn't quite make the mark for me. I ordered two dishes here. The first was the $14 Burrata Cheese over Crostini. It was placed on a bed of arugula with cherry tomatoes and drizzled with a balsamic reduction and truffle oil (photo: https://bit.ly/41MN8kj). While the burrata was soft enough to be easily spreadable on the toasted baguette slices, it lacked a certain freshness that could have really elevated the dish. My entree was the $21 Spaghetti Bolognese which should've been a comfort food slam dunk. It was OK if your points of comparison are Ragu and Chef Boyardee, but again, the dish needed a fresh makeover. Honestly, my experience wasn't the second coming of Stelline's.
