Great find in what can otherwise be a very touristy area. This great little Italian delicatessen is tucked away beneath its big brother Italian restaurant above. It has nice indoor and dockside seating overlooking the Monterey Bay harbor. Located on what I think is known as Coast Guard pier. I love that they offer beer and wine for what seems impossible price in this area. I met Mauricio the owner - a great restraunteer and entrepreneur with several successful restaurants in Morgan Hill and Monterey area. I asked him for his recommendation - he suggested the pork belly panini but I wanted something lighter - so he recommended a half panini with a special Rosemary Prosciutto, pistachio and mascarpone spread with a cup of the house minestrone. In Monterey for a little vacay and wanted something good to eat. Most of the eateries on Cannery Row have pretty low score, but there was one farther down, away from the main tourist area: Piccolo. A sandwich shop. I didn't think I was in the mood for a sandwich (spoiler: it turns out I was) but the place has 5 stars on Yelp. Welp, better a good sandwich than mediocre anything else, so there I went. It's on a commercial dock, great place for a sandwich shop, but not where one might expect something special. I was there, so I went in. Can't remember what it was called, but the panini I ordered was burrata, with sun dried tomato and arugula. So freakin' good! The bread looked like a standard Italian roll, but had the crispy crust of a fresh baked baguette, with a soft airy interior. The tanginess of the sun-dried tomato and the peppery arugula balanced the rich, creamy burrata perfectly. The recipe is simple, but Piccolo's take was elevated more than just a notch. Everything just worked so well together. It was served with a side salad. I'm not a big salad person, but I took a bite. I'm glad I did. Quality greens with a tasty vinaigrette and bits of Gorgonzola. Really good in and of itself, but just made the experience that much better. Not as quaint/touristy as down by the aquarium, but still a great view and way better food. read more

We were in Monterey for a family trip, and just before heading to the airport wanted to squeeze in some last minute seal watching at San Carlos Beach (the very best place to do it, if you're wondering). At the same time we also needed to grab lunch, so I had Yelped and found Piccolo which looked promising with rave reviews and it is right by the beach. Those reviews do not lie -- this was a FANTASTIC meal, and we had a group of 7 adults and a toddler, all with widely varied preferences (1 vegan, and the rest with a variety of other preferences). We kind of covered a lot of the menu with our orders (just the roast beef sandwich was ordered twice) and everyone was raving about their food. My husband said he wished we could have gone back again, which is high praise. I arrived about 2:20 pm to place our order, with other guests there and some who came in after me, and told the owner that we needed it to go because we had to leave to catch a flight within 20 minutes. That's a tall order for a larger group, and I didn't even know their sandwiches are paninied and need to be grilled. (Maybe they aren't always? He did say he was running low on his fresh baked bread so he subbed ciabatta.). But he said he could do it, grabbed employees, and they busted our sandwiches out. I'm not sure what the sandwiches would have been like on the fresh baked bread, but the paninis we got were absolutely fire. We ate them mostly on the drive to the airport and while there, but they were amazing. I was the vegan who got the vegetariano with no cheese, and it was a flavor bomb. Everyone else raved about theirs as well. They also come with side salads which was a pleasant surprise. If you don't want sandwiches, I saw some delicious-looking (non-vegan) pizzas being cooked while I was there and they have soups, etc as well. The former Pig Wizard location is now an Italian sandwich shop. Owned by the same owner as the upstairs Italian restaurant, this location has amazing paninis and sandwiches. We came here and the owner is so nice and accommodating. He is so passionate about his food and can pretty much make you any sandwich combination you want. I believe he makes the bread in-house and some of the meat like the roast beef. I have come back twice and ordered the Cuban, a specialty Italian sandwich with mortadella, prosciutto, pesto, onions and arugula, and I got the special which was similar to a mufflaleta. All the sandwiches I've ordered have been excellent. It is a little pricey, but I believe these are quality items and ingredients and I'm happy to support such a nice owner. Parking isn't too bad if you're lucky to get a spot right in front otherwise you'll have to pay for parking since this is where all the scuba divers park to go scuba diving at San Carlos Beach. It's a very spacious restaurant and you have your own private patio on the wharf to overlook the water. He also let us try a homemade soup that was similar to minestrone and it was so flavorful and delicious. Happy to continue to patronize this place and try some of his new specials. read more
