Five stars for pickles? Seriously? Yeah, seriously. They're that amazing. Pickled pineapples. That's all I'm saying. You have to run down now and get them before the season's over. I made a quick visit to The Pickle Guys thinking that I would get really good pickles, but instead I got blown away by their pickles. They have several different kinds varying in sourness (quarter, half, three-quarters, and full) and different kinds (spicy, sweet), including different vegetables (different kinds of tomatoes, olives, carrots, onions, beans, turnips, etc) and seasonal varieties. The pickled pineapples fulfilled my unspoken and unknown pickle desires. They're the perfect balance of sweet, tart, and spicy. I kept popping one after another into my mouth until I puckered up. They're so addicting. The funny thing was that I was in line with no intention of getting them of as the people in front of me tasted them and said, "Oh, they're really good. I'll get those too." I also had to taste them. And then get them. And then based on my reactions, the people behind me also tasted and got them. And so forth. It was a domino chain reaction. They'll let you taste whichever pickles you want to taste and they're really patient with you, even if you behave like a silly little thing and change your mind a couple times. The guy helping me just smiled and patiently said, "Just tell me what you want, sweetheart." LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! They recently moved across the street from their original store and it's super bright and clean! Went in during lunch on a weekday and it was pretty empty. The guys in there were very nice and not at all stingy with their recs and samples. I ended up leaving with mangos/pineapples/half sours/tomatoes/bread and butter pickles. This is such a cool and unique place. For one reason or another the hubby was looking for pickles while in NYC. He came across the "Pickle Guys" and just HAD to go!!!! The fact that they were only a few blocks away made it so that we were definitely going!!! We stopped in and were taken aback by the line out the door, the teeny tiny space and the variety of pickled foods!!!! It was like something out of an old movie. They have barrels (yes, actual barrels) of all of their pickled options. From mango, pineapple, onions, garlic to pickles. It's a pretty neat place. You yell over to the guy in front what it is you want and how much of it. We walked away with pickles (of course!) and pineapples. An odd but delightful choice. The prices weren't bad either. My hubby, his brother and father LOVED both choices! So much so that my father in law has started to make pickled pineapples along with his home made pickles he already makes. Vlasic, Claussen and Best Maid have NOTHING on these fresh pickles! They've got new pickles (pretty much tastes like a cucumber with some vinegar), 1/2 sours, full sours, spicy & more! After having brunch with a few new friends last Saturday, they proceeded to take down the street to a place they loved.......The Pickle Guys. This, I was told, was a famous place as evidence that they shipped all over the country. When I arrived at the store front, across the street as a full on volleyball tournament with an all Asian population and the crowds were cheering just about every second. Turning to look into the store the first thing catching my eye are all the open barrels that occupy just about all the floor space! Though they have pickles, they also sell many other pickled items...over 30. But I was there for the famous pickles. There are 7 pickle types....Sour pickles, 1/4 sour, 1/2 sour, new pickles (look like wet cucumbers *grin*), Hot New pickles, Hot Sour pickles, and Horseradish pickles. I selected the traditional 1/2 and 1/4 sour pickles and they were delicious! Of course everything was kosher as well, made so under the rabbinical supervision of Rabbi Shmuel Fishelis.....yes, that is his name, don't knock it. (wow.....starting to sound like a new yorker already?!?!) Per pickle price is around $0.50, but the pickles are large and very tasty. It's amazing the things you can find while walking around in NYC. As soon as I spotted Pickle Guys after picking up some doughnuts from The Doughnut Plant, I knew I had to get a pickle. They pickle everything in here and it smells wonderfully briny. I only wanted one pickle, so I got the hot & spicy pickle. When we got back to the apartment, I took a small bite of the pickle. It felt like my mouth was on fire, it was that hot! But oh so good. It took me a couple of days to eat the pickle b/c it was soooo hot! Mind you it wasn't that hard considering that I have a penchant for tart, sour things to begin with but your terrific products and gentlemanly service helped to seal the deal. I grabbed a quart of half sours mixed in with full sours for $6.25, which nabs you 10-12 fresh high quality cukes in each container. Their pickles have a snappy crunch in each bite and a clean sour flavor. Not soggy, not over brined, just right. They also have a host of other brined products on offer from olives to sauerkraut. Don't read too much into this when I say this but, I love pickles. Pickles are awesome and the Pickle Guys pickles are great. Bucket upon bucket of just about anything that can be soaked in a salty-sweet-spicy mixture of vinegar, salt and spices; presided over by two "friendly" New Yorkers. My buddy EAA & I walked in there and were greeted with, "how's it goin' there, handsome?" And upon being given a sample pickle from one of the buckets, EAA asked for a napkin; "no napkins, use your sleeve." They were not joking. Anyway, what's your pleasure: Spicy-sour pickles? New pickles? Giardinera? Okra? Mushrooms? Garlic? Carrots? Green Tomatoes? Sweet Gherkins? New Sours? All of them delicious. Pickles will run you $6.25 for a quart, which I don't really consider expensive considering you can probably fit about 10-12 pickles into a quart container and you seriously have a problem if you're going to eat more than 10-12 pickles in a day. read more

You know a place is legit when you can smell it down the block and can't help yourself from walking towards it. I was almost surprised by how friendly the guy working there was. Maybe I just expect New York institutions to serve delicious food and have terrible service? Or maybe I was just thinking the staff would have a sour attitude (I'll show myself out now). But he definitely helped me make a decision from the ridiculous amount of options and gave me quite a few to sample. My favorite was definitely the mango which is sweet at first and then spicy - it was both refreshing and warm. I loved both the half and full sour pickles, but almost wished they had a 75% option - the half didn't taste sour at all and the full was too much so. I loved the first gherkin I tried but after three or four they were way too sweet. This is definitely the place to take the pickle lover in your life or convert someone new. read more

'we can pickle that!' Okay, first of all, let me say that i love pickles. So maybe this place is like a godsend for me, but not necessarily for everyone. But still, Pickle Guys makes some legit pickles, pickles of all kinds. Various pickled cucumbers, pickled tomatoes, okra, olives, peppers, even pineapple. Yes, pineapple (I haven't tried them, though). I don't know what they use, or how they pickle their stuff, but Pickle Guys is one-of-a-kind. Especially good for the summer months, pickles and pickle juice (yes, pickle juice is great too) are super refreshing and really hit the spot during the heat. The prices are amazing too. I came upon this place after being greeted one time too many by closed doors at Guss' Pickles. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by the lovely smell of pickles and other various pickled products which I would have never imagined pickling! The gentlemen working in the little garage-type space were incredibly helpful and friendly in explaining what types of pickles they had and helping me decide what I was going to get. "Get one of each! Two of each! Three of each!" I settled for two of the half sour and two of the sour pickles. They put them in a plastic baggie, twist tied it shut and I went on my way. On the subway ride home I was a little self concious about the fact I was carrying around a bag that was oozing pickle smells. I got home, ate two of the delicious pickles at re-twist tied my baggie shut and popped it in the fridge. I definitely enjoyed the sour ones better. I somehow forgot to eat my two remaining pickles the next day, and so they innocently sat in the fridge while my roomie and I went out of town for the weekend. Big mistake. When we returned and opened the fridge, it smelled like a giant pickle. Unfortunately my pickles had managed to infiltrate the fridge so well that even the water in my roomie's Brita had a taste of pickles. She doesn't like pickles. (I'm sorry Laura!) It took a good scrubbing to rid our tiny fridge of the pickle smell, but it now is back to normal. The moral of the story? This place was started by Alan Kaufman, who used to work at Guss Pickles before the store moved down a block and was sold to a new owner. Of course every one of these stores gets their pickles from a large distributor and then finishes them and packages them on site. Anyway, to compare these pickles to anything else in the country, they are fabulous! I have ordered by mail to get them delivered to the West Coast, they are so good. Nevertheless, they are not as good as the ones at Guss Pickles, for my palate, not as crunchy or garlicky. With Guss Pickles, I could eat a quart in an afternoon, with these I still have a quart sitting in my refigerator after a month. But still good pickles. read more

He learned his lesson in DC a few weeks later. But back to the pickle guys: they were making homemade horseradish. Two things: 1. I did not know that the pickle guys make homemade horseradish. 2. I didn't know how spicy that horseradish is. We promptly bought three (I had to share with my family). And took it home. The staff is awesomely nice and will give you taste tests of everything. And they have a lot of pickles. The pickle guys make me really happy. And they are next to Kossar's Bialys and the Doughnut Plant and PKNY. This place is nirvana for those who like pickled products, not just pickles! You walk in and are instantly greeted by two or three great guys. If they are helping someone else, they'll apologize and tell you they'll be with you soon. They have rows of pickled products from olives, to pickles, to garlic, etc. You name it, they have it and it's all damn good. You can taste the products before purchasing, just be sure and stand back away from the canisters as they're all open (lesson learned). I happen to like new pickles, the really fresh green ones, and they have hot fresh pickles, which are spicy and regular fresh pickles. I like pickles. Everyone loves pickles. It's a proven fact. So when I randomly noticed this place it became a must visit. Finally made it there for the first time a few weeks ago. As a kid, my uncle took me to a place on Essex Street where I had the most amazing pickle I ever tasted. This isn't that place. In fact, The Pickle Guys is the last remaining store in what used to be the Pickle District. And while, no, it isn't the place I visited during my childhood, it did bring back a fond childhood memory. As you walk in, you are greeted by a nice pickle smell. It's small, but they do have a great variety of pickles, from the traditional cucumber pickles to various veggies and fruit. Two things I would most wholeheartedly recommend: the pickled pineapple and the pickled mangoes. When I first saw them, I had to try them. WOW!!! The sweet and sour mix perfectly!! One taste and I was addicted. I now get them whenever I go there. I also love the new pickles, which are still firm and very tasty. I have to try the other veggies. The people who work there are very friendly and will give you a sample if you ask. These guys always have the longest line during the pickle festival (yes this does exist). That's because their pickles are always fresh and packs plenty of flavor. My favorite thing about this place is you can go in and sample every pickled food before you buy it. This means cucumbers, peppers, olives, string beans, horseradish, etc. The list goes on and on. Every order is packed fresh from a wooden barrel with pickle juice oozing out. The hot pickles are actually hot, but I like the new pickles better. They're not too sour and have plenty of crunch. This place isn't just pickles, but tons of different items that are placed in "pickled" barrels... some barrels range from 3 months pickled, others are 3 weeks and others are 3 days. I tried a pickle from each "picklelized?" barrel. Obviously, I'm a pickle lover like my main man, Buckwheat... so I enjoyed the 3 month pickled pickle. The pickles and the guys here are really amazing. They close at 6:00pm and I got here right at 5:58pm. They were packing up, putting away all the barrels in the walk-in fridge and were already mopping up the floors but they still let me try and purchase pickles! WIN! It was my first time here but after previously trying spicy pickles at Pickle Me Pete, I knew those were the only pickles I wanted to buy. They let me try both the sour and regular spicy pickles. The guy had to go through all the stacked barrels to find my spicy pickles! The spicy pickles are not too spicy IMO and pickled perfectly. I didn't have enough time to try everything I wanted to buy because of time but I will definitely be back. Also, the prices are right. read more
