They DEEP FRIED the BACON in the same oil as fish and chips, Imagine old fish bacon, barf. Deep Frying bacon is a classic LAZY cook method that will kill your reputation. We will never be back to this hotel until they up their game. NASTY In addition, the reception is sort of cold and uninviting, mold in the bathroom, and a bartender that has no idea how t make what on the menu. I hope they get their SH*T together. The mixed reviews make sense.... I had their clam chowder two days in a row and it didn't taste the exact same both times. One day is was rich and creamy, the next day it was riddled with half cooked potato chunks. The flavor was there, but the chef fumbled on some very simple aspects. My husband RAVED about the crispy pork shoulder and I let out an audible gasp of joy when I took a bite off his plate. The pork was bursting with flavor but unfortunately the lentils were bland in my opinion. Overall, everything was very delicious and our table was silent for minutes on end as we rapidly brought big spoonfuls and forkfuls to our salivating mouths. Tiny place...this used to be a different, bigger restaurant years ago. Just stopped in for a drink. The menu was not impressive. They also add gratuity in to your bill no matter what the price! Two Tito's and cranberry juice was almost $24. The view is nice but not worth the price. Servers are not super friendly...obviously because they are getting their tips no matter what. The salad was overdressed and had substations that were not communicated when ordering.We ate the burger, only because it was there. I was excited about the savory churros. Do not order. Yet there was only one option, the portion was fairly small, spendy and it was just OK. given all the fresh seafood and shellfish in the area, I would have expected more! I would though recommend the steamer clams- we did have 2 orders of them! as for the living wage thing- the bill was very spendy as others have previously commented on. our service was fine but certainly not phenomenal. Another way of potentially addressing the 'living wage' ordeal in Long Beach is to be upfront with customers and say that no tip is required. simply charge a bit more for everything on the menu with the understanding from the get go that a tip won't be expected. if service has been above expectations, a tip can certainly be added by the customer. all for providing all employees of a restaurant a living wage- but there seems like there's a better way of going about it that doesn't force the customer to make up for shortcomings that the restaurant can't already provide, such as a living hourly wage. if 20% gratuity is to be automatically added to every bill- service at the very least should be excellent and top notch. read more

This is somewhat of a mixed review. Some really good things, some bad (and I think the bad would have been corrected had we eaten in rather than had take out during the pandemic). The bad first (which isn't too bad): We ordered the Grilled Blue Scorcher appetizer as well as the roasted cauliflower. The scorcher appetizer was simply dry grilled bread. Nothing more. Obviously, whoever prepared the dish overlooked a step, but we didn't figure this out until I had already driven back to the house we were staying at (which had no butter). The cauliflower had obviously been cooked in some way, although it was impossible to tell if it had been roasted (it could have been microwaved or steamed based on its appearance). I can only deal with cauliflower when it has been nicely roasted, getting rid of any hint of bitterness, so this didn't work for me (but my wife was OK with it). Again, if you eat in, these are both issues you would uncover immediately and they could be fixed. Not so good with take out. The Good. I got the Painted Hills burger with fries and it was awesome. The bun ( a nice brioche), toppings ( house gerkins and sauce which were excellent), everything. The fries held up well during the drive home and weren't covered with Old Bay. My wife had the crab cakes and loved them as well (including the fennel salad). Our 15 year old daughter had the kids grilled cheese. Wow! That was a biggest grilled cheese I've ever seen in my life. And tons of fries. Large enough to share with smaller kiddos. And our hold kid had the pizza. Pretty plain but very serviceable (and good for leftovers). Although we got take out, I did get up to the restaurant on the 4th floor. The views of the beach are amazing. The people who helped me were also quick and attentive when I was able to get in contact (we had to call a couple of times before they picked up). Just bummed a bit about the two sides. Also note than an 18% gratuity is added to every single order (not just larger groups). So separately tipping is pretty much optional. Ultimately, this is definitely a place I come to eat at when I feel more comfortable eating in. read more

Disappointing. I came with a hankering for a piece of fish. I was looking forward to the braised salmon after the appetizer of sautéed mushrooms came out so well. But what I got was a fail: tomato sauce was out of balance, being much more acid than it should have been; the braised tuna was chewy having been cooked to within an inch of its life and the risotto was pasty and just wrong. I didn't want he seafood stew because it is usually great for scraps, a tasty item that keep restaurants in the Black. So I ordered a smoked salmon salad instead. I figured I might get a chunk of fish, but instead it was a soggy mess of shredded salmon. Maybe the idea is to keep the off-season roaring with substandard or inexpensive ingredients and hope people will stay up? "Finishing menu" is a term that is getting traction these days. IMHO, please spare me the pretentious and get me good food instead. Also decide if you are pretentious or rustic. Mason jars work at the "fried/everything" place down the street, not a somewhat finer-dining establishment that seems to be the aspiration here. My desert was an apple crisp. It came in a flash and was unevenly heated. I could tell because I never have ice cream to better taste the pie itself. My server was awesome and they bought my cocktail as service recovery. I would have given her a big tip, but not sure about that 20% mandatory service fee. Front of house deserved it. Back of house... not so much. read more

My family and I have been going down to Long Beach at least once a year for the past two or more decades. When the Pickled Fish first opened up, it was a really unique dining experience, and the quality was amazing. Over the years, the quality of the food has dropped, but drinks were still great. Now, I'm sorry to say, there's really no reason to go back for us, especially after our last visit. The drinks were just okay. The food was average, but still at a premium price. But it was the service that ruined it for us, or more the lack thereof. Now I know, it's COVID times and all that, but we dined at several places this trip (and on others) where there was only a small impact to service, and it was delivered with enthusiasm. Not so here. Not only was the service lackluster -- slow, seemingly irritated at our presence -- but we had an issue with food allergies. Most places take allergies pretty seriously, but not here -- when we ordered their special fries, we specifically asked for cheese on the side, noting that a member of our party has a dairy allergy. When we got the fries, they had cheese on top. Okay, that happens -- no big, right. Just send it back. So we did, and the annoyed waitress grabbed the bowl off the table and huffed back to the kitchen. A few minutes later, a "new" bowl of fries came out, without any cheese to be seen -- until we got near the bottom of the bowl. Sure enough, right there at the bottom was the same cheese that we'd complained about originally -- the kitchen had dumped the bowl and refilled it rather than make a completely new order. It's a good thing that I was the one to find it and not our allergic family member! I thought that the manager on duty might want to know, so they could correct the kitchen. Nope, she didn't believe me that there was cheese in the bowl, responded with a generic apology, and only comped the appetizer after she "confirmed" that there was in fact cheese there. This was a check that must have been close to $200 for five people, and she "confirmed" that an $10(?) app was screwed up before making it right? Very disappointing, though she did do the right thing in the end. I don't know if it was COVID or the automatic 18% gratuity that made the staff so nonchalant and/or lazy. The server didn't even know what was in the sauce they serve on their burgers (again, related to the dairy allergy -- after the fries situation we didn't want to take any chances). But all this was capped off by the sight of one of their cooks taking off his facemask every time he went into the kitchen, all of which leaves me seriously wondering about the level of effort, quality, and care that goes into the food here now. It's sad, because the old Pickled Fish was a great place to go for appetizers, drinks, and dinner -- and now it's not even up to par with the average restaurant in town. They got the check + 18% but that's probably the last dollar we'll be spending there. read more

The food was alright. They were surprisingly busy on a Friday night. I stayed at the Adrift hotel (hated it - see separate review). I was put off by the restaurants 'no tipping' policy. Instead of tips they impose a 20% gratuity on EVERY bill. Sorry, That's not how it works! If you want to provide a 'living wage' pay your employees what you want to pay them, raise your prices and see how it works out for you. Leave me out of it! Adding 20% fee on top is extortion! This policy is clearly stated, so I only had water and a couple appetizers and got the hell out of there! read more

We had a great early dinner at the pickled fish. We had a custom pizza with pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, and bacon and garlic. When I asked for bacon, the server told me that they didn't have bacon, only pork belly. I told her I was very disappointed, but would deal with it (just kidding.) the pizza was awesome! We then had the bread pudding for dessert. It also was awesome. We had had two old fashions, which we thought were very good, and finished up with some of their GlenCadam, 1825 Highland scotch. Plus, you cannot beat the view of the beach from the fourth floor! The service was also superb! The ambience is about what you would expect from a beach, dining establishment. Long Beach isn't a place that I have associated with great restaurant experiences since I have been visiting, which has been for quite a while. I can't remember when these guys opened, but, man, am I ever glad they are here. If you like going out for a nice meal when you are on vacation, the Pickled Fish makes Long Beach that much more complete a destination for you. They're almost, but not quite, to the beach itself. Pretty much everything in town is set back from the waves across a strip of dunes and a wide swath of sand. They're no different here. They're on the 4th floor, with elevator access and plenty of parking. They're in a busy hotel, and right next to a busy little road that provides car access to the beach--so even way out here on the coast, you might have to hunt a bit for parking. The hotel itself seems to hover on the verge between kind of a bargain place and maybe kind of a tiny bit nicer place, and it's hard to tell which way it's leaning. The elevator ride doesn't exactly bring you to your knees with luxury, but it's fine. The restaurant, though, is nice as soon as you walk in. Sturdy furniture made from dark wood everywhere you look--you can see and almost feel the wood grain, and the effect makes you feel comfortable if you dressed for dinner, just walked in from a long walk/ride on the beach, or somewhere in between. Cement floors, heavy square surfaces--easy to clean, so don't feel too awfully guilty if you have a little sand on you. The service is a little slow and spacey, but the kids are super nice. They definitely want you to enjoy your experience, but if the day is slow, then they kinda move with that current. The lunch and dinner menus look incredibly interesting; I was on my way back to Seattle when I stopped in, so I caught happy hour. That's a short menu, but everything on it was good. Some local beers (Seaview and Astoria breweries), a couple supermarket beers from farther inland. Lots of specialty cocktails. But the food is what really stood out. Perfectly fried oysters, generous portions. Very fresh and flavorful focaccia with nicely herbed butter. Cup of clam chowder with very cunning seasoning--there was no mistaking it as an old familiar comfort food, but there were savory spices and bright notes in the seasonings that I've never had before; gave the broth a slight orange hue. And the broth was struggling to survive in the cup--there was so much clam you probably couldn't get a spoonful of only broth if you tried. Peppers and potato, but maybe 3 or 4 bites of those in an 8-ounce serving. It was just that clammy. HH prices are very fair, and you're sitting and staring at waves from the 4th floor the entire time. It would be hard to come to Long Beach and not have at least one meal here. read more

Hubby and I went to Long Beach to celebrate Christmas and during our weeklong stay we enjoyed several meals from Pickled Fish Restaurant. Below is a ranked list of the food items I tried: 1. Fennel sausage pizza: the blend of Parmesan, mozzarella and tomato sauce created one of the best pizza bases I've ever had. The mushrooms tasted freshly foraged. Delicious crispy salty crust. 2. Clam chowder: chunks of bacon, creamy salty broth, hint of cayenne. Perfection. 3. Roasted Brussels sprout Caesar: light yet filling. Fresh sprouts and apple slices. Tangy vinaigrette. 4. Oatmeal craisin cookie a la mode: baked fresh in a cast iron skillet topped with vanilla ice cream oozing into the cookie. Warm gooey bites. 5. Baked ham + cheese sandwich: two baguette slices topped with mornay sauce, cheese and ham. I could've drank that sauce straight up. So. Good. 6. Warm craisin white chocolate chip cookies that were in our breakfast basket. Key to its deliciousness was that they were served warm. They were fluffier than other scones I've had, and not overwhelmingly sweet. 7. Yogurt parfait: fresh yogurt + granola + strawberries. Simple and filling. Favorite part? All of the components were served in jars! I'm obsessed with jars. 8. Breakfast sandwich: brioche bun, crispy bacon, micro greens, egg, white cheddar cheese. Nothing notable. Guess I'm just spoiled by MatMuffins. 9. Macaroni and cheese: surprisingly didn't enjoy this as much as I thought and I think it's due to the overwhelming taste of rosemary in the dish. Very cheesy and I liked the spiral noodles versus traditional elbow. 10. Salmon with orzo and pesto: fish was flaky but didn't have much flavor. The orzo was a bit sweet and not very fresh. Pesto sauce was a bit lacking in flavor. Though props to making micro greens taste good! 11. French toast: the French toast tasted a bit stale. I liked that it was very cinnamon sugary (think: Cinnamon Toast Crunch). I loved the homemade whipped cream and syrup. Would've liked some more raspberry sauce. We did a mix of onsite dining, room service and takeout. Dining there is lovely because there is a breathing ocean view from everywhere in the restaurant but we liked the other options for when we were lounging and didn't want to get properly dressed. The service was always pleasant and we were lucky that the restaurant was so close to where we were staying - directly above our room when we stayed at Adrift and a short parking lot distance away when we stayed at the sister property, Inn at Discovery Coast. "Are we in Portland?" asked my boyfriend as we sat down inside the Pickled Fish, surveying the expanse of chalkboard menu boards, mason-jar drinks and heavily tattooed servers. In a touristy beach town where everything else is pretty kitschy, the Pickled Fish is a tasteful little foodie oasis that would be at home in the big city. We came in for dinner on a weekend night without reservations, but were able to get a tiny corner table for two. The huge wall-to-wall windows offer stunning beach views and make the space feel very light and open. All the seating seems slightly awkward -- you can choose to perch at the bar, have a tiny bistro table or an even tinier bar shelf against the window, or sit at a long bench-style table -- so you just have to make the best of it and use windowsills creatively once plates start arriving. We started with the cheese plate, which included three tasty cheeses, dried fruit and nuts, and flatbread crackers. I had the (nonalcoholic) cranberry lemonade, which is quite tart and fresh-tasting but might be too sour for kids. We had live-caught salmon with quinoa and veggies and the elk sliders for our entrees, and both were good-sized portions of nicely prepared and presented food. They have a fancy cocktail menu with good booze, priced to match. Given how expensive even the greasy spoon diners and family restaurants are in Long Beach, the Pickled Fish is a comparatively good value, and what you lose in quantity, you'll make up in quality. And with a large part of the dining area devoted to the impressive bar, it tends to discourage families with kids -- bonus! read more

I enjoyed breakfast, but disappointed in the lack of veggie options. Maybe I was just jealous the didn't offer a vegetarian gravy option with their biscuits and gravy - that's probably it. My omelet was good, albeit overpriced. Yes, the view is spectacular, especially if you sit at the window bar - creatively placed hunks of wood with the windowsill perfectly placed to hold your drinks/condiments, etc. Staff wasn't overly friendly, perhaps they were as hungover as I was. The prior evening we had stopped by hoping for a drink, walked all the way to the back only to be told they were closed. Apparently one of the servers (or a manager) was having a drink at the bar and said, "did you just come in?" "Yes, we replied" "Yeah, well we're closed". The bar was packed, and looked like people were still ordering, but OK I get it, not letting more people in. I guess it was the way we were told. Not, "I'm sorry, we're actually closed", but "yeah, well, we're closed" It just didn't set well overall. So when I begged my husband to try it for breakfast, I guess I shouldn't have been surprised that we were greeted with a similar ambivalent attitude (from a completely different server). Great food, amazing views, and they have live music every weekend. The staff is very friendly and accommodating and will accept reservations in advance. Pickled fish is located on the top floor of the hotel. If you arrive too early for your reservation, walk across the road to the distillery. You won't be disappointed. Our favorites on the menu were the dirty dirty fries, crab cakes, and all the pizzas are delicious. If you're a fan of oysters, they are fresh and delicious here. read more

Pickled Fish has such a wonderful view, up-front and personal with the Pacific Ocean. Almost all tables throughout the restaurant are at a window so it's highly likely your seat will come with a lovely view. We walked in at dinner time the Sunday before Labor Day without a reservation but were seated within 15 minutes! The Dungeness crab spaghetti was an absolute disappointment. The noodles were not even spaghetti... they were flat + very thin, like an extra thin linguine. The 5 ingredients listed were Dungeness crab, basil, tomato, preserved lemon and vodka but the pasta was extremely spicy. Even had to walk up to the bar to ask for more water (because our server was challenging to catch). The sauce was not thick like normal pasta sauce, and this was not pasta tossed with fresh tomatoes like a primavera, instead the sauce was rather soupy. I strongly disagree with the automatic addition of a 20% tip on our bill. I would have tipped our server no more than 15%. He didn't smile once and as I mentioned was also difficult to catch. read more

So cute and delightful. I was really pleased with my meal here. My boyfriend and I arrived around 630 and were able to be seated right away by the windows overlooking the beach. The day was overcast but was still a good view. To start, we ordered the crab macaroni and cheese. Omg yum. This was a looser such style that's not baked, with sharp cheddar and chunks of sweet crab. So creamy and rich and delicious. It was a good size to split and could probably be an entree if you didn't have a huge appetite. I also ordered a Cocktail for a Cause, which they didn't tell me what it was so it came to me as a surprise. Luckily I love gin, and the drink was a gin and sea bean martini which I enjoyed way more than an olive martini, because well olives are gross. This was salty and sweet and floral and very nice. For entrees, I had the smoked salmon risotto and my boyfriend had the fish and chips. My risotto was fantastic, with smoky bacon like chunks of salmon, collard greens and mushrooms, garnished with pea shoots. Mmmm. I thought the fish and chips were under seasoned but still good. My girlfriend and I came here for a wedding in June. We came here for dinner the first night and ordered the Cajun glazed maple salmon, And the Buddha bowl with chicken. Both of the main dishes were very good. We also ordered some oysters to start which had a very nice presentation and a very tasty vinaigrette sauce. My girlfriend got a rose and I a beer which were both good. The service was OK. One thing that they do call out on the menu but isn't clear unless you're really looking for it or read the whole menu is they include a 20% tip, which is okay but it does allow the service to maybe lower their effort. We did come back for breakfast the day that we were leaving I ordered the breakfast sandwich and my girlfriends got an egg and potatoes. We also split an order of the Dutch babies and it was only OK I'll little bit too doughy. read more

Second visit. My first was in August 2014, and was one of the best meals Ive had. We've wanted to get back to Pickled Fish ever since. Finally made it back two weeks ago. Had the same table, same very personable server. Walked in and everyone was very friendly, so off to a good start. Ordered a Hemingway daquiri and a white russian to go with the mac and cheese and the special, which was blackened halibut. At that point I excused myself to the mens room. The mens room absolutely reeked of urine and only had a few hand towels left. I'd understand this more at the end of the night....but it was 5 pm! Not good.. Returned to my table and the drinks were waiting. I took a quick swallow of the daquiri, noted it as pretty good, went to take another sip and it was gone! wth? Just a single enormous ice cube in the glass. Same story with the white russian. Mentioned the obvious short pour to the server and she replied that each drink had at least two ounces of alcohol in it. Ordered two cokes, they came out in the bottle and were cane sugar mexican cokes. Whatever. Entrees arrived. Last time, the mac and cheese was literally the best we'd ever had. This time, it was awful, literally the worst. Overpowering amount of some herb (rosemary?) and tasted like a gym locker smells. Why on earth was the previous recipe was abandoned it was fantastic last time?? Halibut was a small cube ($28) and severely overcooked, but I'll take partial blame for that. I fish for (and cook a lot of) halibut and it is extremely easy to overcook. Not a type of fish that should be blackened, and I should've known better than to order it. Neither meal was good at all. We left nearly all of it and went up the street to another restaurant and had pasta. Super disappointed. Will go one more time but we'll order beer instead, and if the food isnt better its off my list for good. read more

I've been here twice and have to say it is the best place to dine in long beach. They are pickling experts! I unfortunately dont have photos for the food because the ambiance is quite dark- modern wood furniture, rustic mason jar lamps, cozy and intimate with live music. Their seafood is fresh from the port and they're also known for serving delicious porkbelly inspired meals. Very new american- I highly recommend the beet salad, specials of the night and if you're a pizza fan, their fennel/mushroom/sausage pizza is packed with the right spices. Beautiful location, great branding (graphic design / interior design appreciated), food is presented beautifully... so what is lacking? I really think they need more staff to keep this place going. My mother and I played the waiting game the entire time we were there and I was shocked. 20 mins to get our drink order and an hour for food? Yikes. My family enjoyed eating here four times in our three day stay. From brunch, to happy hour and dinner, we were pleased with all of our choices and service. The staff seemed relaxed and worked together well as a team. They were extremely patient, kind and accommodating to us with our young toddler. We were able to sit by the window and enjoy our beautiful view of the ocean, as well as keep an eye on our dog in the car below. We loved the oysters and had to try a new cocktail each time. Casual-yet-classy. If this place is any indication, I predict a cultural revolution in Long Beach. One where hipster-esque establishments outnumber touristy dives. This place has great views, so-so food and amazing drinks. I highly recommend this joint. read more

I stumbled upon this place by accident this weekend, saw the eat + drink sign from its perch on the 4th floor of the Adrift Hotel, overlooking the sand dunes and beach, and promptly went in. Okay, I'll note right up front that this place is designed and calculated to push all of the right vacationing hipster bourgeois buttons, from it's industrial chic bare wood, metal and leather decor, to its big white plates housing ornately plated sliders, oysters, and pork belly fries. And I'll also confess that I haven't even had the food. Unfortunately we'd just eaten before arriving. I'm basing this review solely on the ambiance, the service, and especially the outrageously creative and delicious cocktails. Oh man, the cocktails! These people know their mixology. They've got high end and exotic ingredients and know how to use them. They're a bit on the spendy side, but we were lucky enough to arrive during happy hour ($2 off house cocktails). This place's culinarily correct ethic of farm to plate locavorism carries over to the drinks in a manner I much approve of. The beers are mostly from Fort George across the river in Astoria (with a tap of PBR for the hipsters). They've got the full brace of Portland and Oregon distillery products (Pear brandy, Aviator Gin, etc.). I can say that I SAW a lot of the food and it's pretty artfully crafted and looked good. It's a small plates place, which can be annoying if you have a mean hungry after downing 3 or 4 $9 - $11 offerings. But there was a lot of variety of some pretty tasty looking stuff. The place is intimate, but brightly lit due to big windows that reveal a big view of the beach. Touristy? Definitely? Bourgeois hipster trendy? Certainly. But damn it, you have to give credit to people who make exquisite cocktails--especially in a small town like Long Beach. And I have to confess that I was also just sort of blown away that a place like this exists in Long Beach. It's kind of twisted. read more

When wandering westward in Washington, warm up and wet your whistle at Pickled Fish where you'll be wowed by wonderful eats. Stay at Adrift Hotel and let the weather, wind and waves wash away your weariness. ---Okay I'm done with the W's. You know when you've been to a place and it gets kind of romanticized in your memory? Then when you return, you're disappointed? Well that didn't happen. I fell in love with Adrift Hotel and it's restaurant / bar, Pickled Fish a few years ago and now it's totally my go to happy place. It's just everything I need. On our latest visit I found they had gluten free fish & chips. I can't even describe how happy that makes me. Add to this and in perfect combination I had for the first (of now many times) Fever Tree Ginger Beer. It was SO good, I begged the bar to sell me a couple of bottles to go. Now I'm super stoked to find this beverage at Donald's Market in Vancouver East Village. So now every time I drink it I remember Adrift Hotel and Pickled Fish. read more

The worst restaurant experience of my life. Ordered 4 different items and all were terrible. Pork shoulder came out cold. Summer squash was literally just squash with olive oil and feta but they sure charge like it's something special. Oh and they make sure your wearing your mask meanwhile no one in the kitchen wears gloves. Watched a cook dipping his mits barehanded into a jar of pickles. Woof. Save your money and skip this place. read more
