Spent a spectacular, spontaneous, snowy afternoon in Strawberry Arizona with my dear friend after driving to Payson for an errand, when we happened upon the magical, whimsical hand-pie stand by "sur-pies" and let me tell you, PIEbar sets a HIGH BAR as far as empanadas and pies are concerned. Lisa, the woman behind the bar, is exceedingly kind and friendly and was such a joy to meet. It was simply a delight! The drink choices are amazingly diverse (for alcohol indulgers and non indulgers alike). Everything is tidy and clean as a whistle (including the restroom which is always a HUGE plus at any place of business.) Overall 10/10 in every imaginable instance. We spotted this place on our way through to camp at The Mogollon Rim. I earmarked it to try on our way back through. Super cute little building with outdoor patios and the cleanest outdoor restroom I have ever seen! Of course you aren't here for that, you're here for the hand pies. We each got one savory and one sweet. Unfortunately the only pics I have are of the bldg and the display case as we are this in the truck on the way back through. They were out of my first veggie choice but did have the second (Artichoke Dip) and had my first sweet choice (Lemon Bar) the crust is exceedingly perfect, flaky but held together well, a little salty, a little buttery...just downright delicious. read more

Yes there is a line. Yes it's for a good reason. This place is by FAR one of the best "hole in the trees" you can find. The variety of empanadas, the quality... and the taste. This is a place that's worth showing up for early and waiting in line. We tried so many of these that it's hard to point to which one was our favorite.. but the mountain baby is up there. The chicken pot pie was my favorite. Finished up with a banana cream pie which tasted a lot like bananas foster. My daughter enjoyed the molten chocolate pie. I'm not a big fan of pie--too much filling and most of the crust is soggy. Which is why Pie Bars Blossoms are the perfect treat. A blossom a fist-size delight of mostly pie crust with a dollop of either apple or berry pie filling in the middle. The crust is folded up over the filling so it looks like a blossom. I had the apple, which was probably the best apple pie filling I've ever had. Lots of delicious crust with just enough filling for each bite. I am still dreaming about them. read more

I had the bean & cheese, artichoke dip, & mushroom stroganoff and I can't decide which one was my favorite because they were all SO good! The menu lists the flavors in order of popularity and I'm really confused why the mushroom one is last on the list because of how good it was - meat eaters you're missing out on this one!! The empanada dough was the perfect thickness to hold in everything and they were all served piping hot. If I lived in town, I'd be here several times a week! My husband had the red Chile beef which he said was great & the mountain man, which is their best seller, that he liked too but said it was very spicy. I had the chicken pot pie which was just perfect. Perfect savory filling in flaky crust. And the green Chile pork which had great flavor but very spicy. I got the empanada with the potato, beef, cilantro I can't remember what the official name was, but it was pretty tasty, mostly crust, but still pretty good. I also got the Panda empanada, the oreo one, for dessert and the was, well, different. It was not awesome, but it was not bad, it was just 'good'. Tried it and just had to come back for more the next day and ordered about a dozen for the road! I have to recommend anything with Green Chile in it. They are very delicious and spot on flavor. If you want a daily surprise, order the breakfast empanadas, I think they change it daily and carry two different breakfast empanadas daily. The two days that we stopped by, all four was spot on perfect. But, they do run out of it fast so stop by early.
