My husband and I had a Fabulous lunch at Pier 22 yesterday afternoon. Sat on the Patio and watched all the yachts and boats go by. Started with a Bloody Mary, hubby had a Bud Lite and I ordered the Grouper Sandwich which was Huge with a side of Mediterranian salad with herb dressing. Delicious! Husband had the Mediterranian Salad with a beautiful piece of Salmon on top with the same dressing. We shared a Carrot Cake and Coffee! Awesome! Daniel our waiter was just so personable and knew everything about the menu and took good care of our needs. Even made a Fresh Pot of Coffee for my husband. Ask for him when you dine there he was terrific! It was a GREAT afternoon and of course we know we will definitely be back. It's one of our favorite restaurants in Bradenton! read more

My after-work Happy Hour party bus of overdressed fly ladies stops here at least once a month to re-fuel. And, let off some steam which involves massive amounts of smack talk and falling over in high-heels. What? ... Don't judge me! From 4:00-7:00PM there is a $5 food and drink menu that is quite impressive with Americanized sushi options and Asian Fusion appetizers. There is also a half rack of cumin baby back ribs for $5! The drinks are doubles, of either the Mojito or Martini variety. Sometimes they are just so happy to see a young group of people, dressed-up and semi-well-behaved, that the staff will bring us over free drinks. I don't know if that will work for everyone, but it does for us. Pier 22 is classy, perhaps too classy for my taste at times. Don't order from the dinner menu here, it is just too expensive. I disliked my meal, but the service and the view is excellent. I really love the view this place offers. Sit on the patio if at all possible. We sat inside, because we were too hungry to wait for a table, but outside is where it is at, since it is right on the water. I got the Shrimp and Grits and were extremely disappointed by the grits. They were lukewarm and clumped together, not how I like my grits at all. I ended up not eating them (or the vegetables, which were also lukewarm, even though we sent it back to the kitchen to have them nuked). I was surprised when the waiter ended up comping the dish. This really turned a bad meal into a better one and I am really grateful he did that. My fiance ordered the ribeye and my mom got the Crab Artichoke Pesto with a Pier 22 Salad to start. The salad was good with the right amount of sauce. I thought the Crab Artichoke Pesto was delicious (which was lucky for me since I ate off her dish since I didn't eat my own). My fiance thought his ribeye was great, but didn't like the mushrooms. Parking around here is free, but sometimes hard to find when all the spots are taken. Since we came on a Saturday night at 5:30 p.m., we got the last spot I saw. People around here eat earlier, since it is an older crowd. Hmmmm...I've spent many sleepless nights deciding to give this place three or four stars. Well, not exactly, but it really is a tough choice. First off, location, location, location! Set on a beautiful pier extending into the Manatee River, the view is superb. I just love sitting at one of the tables by the windows watching the river drift by. The staff has gotten friendlier, especially since it became Pier 22 (was called Mattison's before). The food is good but sorely overpriced. I really suggest eating lunch here versus dinner. The dinner prices are ridiculous for what you get. The lunch menu is mainly sandwiches. The French dip, gator, and grouper sandwiches are delicious. The dinner menu mainly consists of meats and pasta. Everything is a hit or miss. I ordered the shrimp scampi. It was okay. The noodles were sorely overdone, and the sauce was weird. Definitely not worth $20. Chicken penne pasta was tasty but wayyyy overpriced. $19 for a bowl of pasta, sauce, and some chicken and veggies. The half chicken was superb...but overpriced. I think it was $23. Kids pizza was surprisingly good. By far, the most ridiculously priced item on the menu was cheesecake. I was hoping for $8, it would be huge. Nope, normally sized slice. Although the food was okay, the check left a bad taste in my mouth--$100 for three entrees, kids meal, BOGO martinis (two for one), and one slice of cheesecake. Overall, the food here is good, service good, but prices outrageous. This place is trying to be something it isn't, which is a hot dining destination. It was DEAD at 6pm on a Saturday night. Went to lunch with my husband (who's been several times & loves it). Complimentary valet...beautiful location w/nice views. Our server was nice but she seemed a little overwhelmed & rushed (it wasn't busy at all). The warm rolls w/herb butter was good. I had the salmon & corn cake which I thoroughly enjoyed. My husband ordered the balsamic chips & lamb lollipops. I LOVED the balsamic chips & my husband said the lamb was delicious. We are so glad we found this restaurant. Located on the river, the restaurant has an upscale feel with the decor inside, and a very nice overhead patio outside. Our server Jason was on point constantly checking on us. I had the blackened red snapper and my wife had the blackened sea bass. Both were phenomenal, with the nod going to the sea bass. Had lunch on the patio and everything was wonderful! The weather was hot, but I sat at a shaded table outside and with the breeze, it was the perfect Florida weather. I ordered fish and chips and have to say it was the best meal ever! The fish was sweet, fresh and the coating light enough to taste that succulent fish. Just wished there were more than three pieces, so guess where I'm going for dinner. Overall, a good experience. We were 'lucky' to get a parking space. Patrons were parked in a center grass median. We went mid-week, at 1:00p in Jan. It wasn't crowed at arrival, but seems to pick up by 2:00p, which is kind of odd. Service was a bit slow considering the aforementioned. Personally, I don't like when your server takes your order, and then someone else brings your food to the table and has to ask who gets what. That's not fine dining. We had the grouper sandwich which was $23, and overpriced for the size of fish chunks, not a solid piece of fish. The bun overwhelmed the fish portion. It was prepared perfectly, and was fresh and delicious. I had the side salad, which was good, but drenched in dressing. Coleslaw was served with the other sandwich, which was good. Beverages were iced coffee, and one glass of wine, and our bill with $10 tip was $70. Ambiance was delightful, but way over priced. We prefer Riviera Dockside, where the grouper sandwich is a decent chunk of fish and $18 (just checked price before I posted this). Pier 22 is a nice establishment, but since it's difficult to get to, and parking is typically a major problem, and it's over-priced, we won't be going back. read more

We stopped in to enjoy the view and get coffee and a dessert. We had the pleasure of having Melinda take care of us. It was a very hot day and she found a shaded area for us. She was friendly and took the time to tell us about the area and give us directions to Anna Marie Island for sunset (which was fantastic) The peanut butter pie was amazing. My husband had the carrot cake which was big, moist and delicious. The portions were huge. Our only regret is that we did not share one or the other. Great place to go for happy hour and a quick bite! Great veggie lasagna and good sushi. They have a terrific drinks also. The staff is consistently friendly and attentive. We had my wife's bridal shower here and they outdid themselves with great drinks and service. We has an Xmas party here and they were so accommodating. I have also eaten good food in the most understated places and in the areas where yelp doesn't even exist. The reason I am giving two stars to this restaurant: apple spinach salad was good. We had oysters, calamari, and a personal pepperoni pizza. Oysters at $12 for half a dozen. Don't order these please. These are not west coast or east coast really, these are from Texas. Which type... she didn't know. Calamari plate was a child size. Personal pizza was almost all bread. Really seems like the one you can buy in Walmart and heat up in the oven. And then the salad was the only thing I enjoyed. Place was at 10% capacity and I had to wait for my food as if this place was packed. Long wait! Man on Man, go for their Happy Hour. They have an excellent Margherita Pizza. It is one of the best. Other happy hour good deals are the Spring Rolls and the Braised Ribs. One of my favorite salads of just about anywhere similar to a wedge salad is their 1776 Salad. Yes, and one last item that I would recommend would be the Baked Onion Soup. Call me Fresco, Al Fresco. My guiding principal is to frequent only those eateries which offer outdoor seating, preferably with a view. While important, quality and depth of cuisine and imbibables are secondary to open air. From the perspective of this eccentric scheme, Pier 22 is a standout. Situated in a handsome older building in a marina on the Manatee River estuary, P22 devotes a little more than one of its four main sides to its Patio and most of a side to its glorious Terrace, which has more elbow room, granite table surfaces, trees for shade, and arcs of concrete cobble pavers. We first visited for Sunday brunch. We were happy to see that the ball room was starting to fill with a large party of locals. Judging from their khaki suits and fancy dress, they seemed the sort of group that would politely command lots of attention. This was great, as we were hoping for really slow service. The day was crystalline, the river sparkled, and somehow, seating was available on the Terrace. In other words, conditions were perfect for pretending that we were in the south of France. Who wouldn't want to linger? Linger we did. Our first round of drinks took between twenty minutes and half an hour. We had a Bloody Mary and a Yuengling. While we were happy that P22 offered any drafts at all and are proud to support America's oldest beer, we remain puzzled by an apparent inverse relationship between a proximity to water (fresh or salt) and draft depth. With rare exceptions, the pursuit of hoppiness does not lead to the beach. But I digress. After the waiter had finished satisfying Big Daddy and his cohorts and prompted by another waiter who knew when a guy needed a drink, our waiter took our order. We ordered eggs Benedict over capicola, shrimp and grits to celebrate the impending Oscars, and another BM to wash down the SAG. While we weren't exactly hungry, we were confident that we would be by the time our victuals arrived. The second Bloody Mary showed up first. The waiter cleverly forestalled any complaints by immediately apologizing for the lack of a celery stick as he presented the drink. He said that there was a celery shortage and mumbled something about the disruption in the Ukraine, although I think we all suspected that it had more to do with Big Daddy and the boys whooping it up in the ballroom. No matter. When the celery did show up, it came with a bonus olive and lime wedge. The Eggs Benedict were worth the wait and the Shrimp and Grits could not be surpassed without driving to Charleston. I think that the cheese grits must have used more than one cheese to attain their combination of flavor and texture. Next time, I might order a dinner-sized portion, although that might bring on unami overload. By skipping dessert, we were able to wrap up our meal in about two hours and for under $40,including tip. In the highly competitive Florida market, this is no bargain, but we thought that the meal was well worth the price. I'm not being ironic when I say that we relished the slow service. In fact, we relished the slow service so much that we returned to the Pier XXII Terrace (it's really too fancy for 22) on Monday to try the happy hour appetizers. When we arrived at 3:45, we were the third table seated. We were worried that service would be prompt, but our fears were misplaced. Things were as slow as ever. Don't get the idea that the servers are lethargic or surly. Quite the opposite. It's just that the bar and kitchen march to the beat of a different and much slower drummer. This is just fine with us but might annoy patrons who want their tempo McFast. We started off with calamari and a soy mustard dipping sauce. The squids were breaded more than we would have liked, but there weren't so many of them on a $6 plate that we were in danger of greasy overload. The sauce was spectacular. Some of the ingredients must have been under a non-disclosure agreement, as I don't think that any combination of soy and mustard will duplicate their results. But we will try. We also had spring rolls and a small marinara pizza. They were disappointing. Someone might say, "What do you expect for $6 or $7?" Well, to paraphrase Spencer Tracy, I don't expect much, but what there is should be cherce. On Sunday, P22 showed what they are capable of. On Monday, I think that the coach gave the first team off and cleared the bench. Many places don't even bother to open Monday. It's possible that we simply paid the price of arriving at the slackest time in their schedule and that by evening, the starters would have returned. The terrace was lovely as ever, and we were happy to be there. It is place that pulls back on the hands of time. read more

Our first night in Florida from cold New Jersey was exactly what we were hoping. A perfect 72 degrees, a couple rum drinks each, great appetizers and pretty good main courses made for the perfect setting. Our waiter, Aaron (or A-A-Ron) was awesome.
