We've been here a couple of times already and it's always been one of our go to spots until today. Idk what happened. The menu looks a lot smaller with less options. I was looking forward to the Korean braised beef with kimchee rice but I see that this place made away with that, which was disappointing. Everything was pretty overpriced. We ordered the burger medium and the filet mignon. When we had gotten there, there were only us and another couple seated. The place was empty. We ordered our food and waited for what felt like eternity. $47 got us 3 small pieces of undercooked steak, a mushroom and half a tomato with chimichurri. $32 got us an overcooked cold burger. My burger tasted like it sat for 15 mins. The woman seated next to me also got a burger and idk if she ordered it that way but her burger was so red and raw, it looked like it just came out of the meat grinder. The cherry on top was when I started choking. My boyfriend had cut a piece of steak for me and since it was still pretty raw, I was chewing it for a while and it slipped down my throat and blocked my airway. I was full on choking. I went into panic mode and attempted to pull it out, and luckily enough it was so raw everything was still attached and it came out whole lol. The best part of the night was this orange cat that came by. Everyone loved him. So many people were trying to get its attention and we gave him a piece of the $47 steak and he loved it. Idk if I would ever go back to this place again. The quality of the food coming out this time around was not worth what they were asking. Disclaimer: we limited our meals here to breakfast ala carte or the grab and go. We did not try the breakfast buffet. It seems most of the bad reviews are for dinner so I can't comment on dinner fare, value or service. We stayed three nights at the Outrigger Kona resort and spa after a few days in Hilo. Breakfast options outside of Piko are getting into your car and driving out or having access to the Voyager 47 club. Captive audience we were. During our stay we ate or drank, Lox bagel, Avocado toast, Macadamia nut croissant, Ham cheese croissant sandwich, Cold brew (decent) and Drip coffee (just ok). The lox bagel surprisingly came with a sizable amount of salmon. The bagel itself was nothing special, but the good size schmear of cream cheese had some herbs and spices mixed in. The schmear wasn't the kind you'll get in NYC where you have more cream cheese than bagel, but most people will be happy with the amount. The avocado toast was tasty, with a sizable amount of fresh avocado, arugula, halved tomatoes, and thinly sliced radish, over toasted bread, with a slice of orange and a strawberry. My better half loved the Macadamia nut croissant, being buttery with a large amount of cream dotted with mac nuts. The ham and cheese croissant was less buttery than the mac nut croissant, but had a good amount of warm melted cheese and ham. The cold brew was smooth and not bitter, with solid caffeine, being a good afternoon pick me up for a session in the adult pool. The drip coffee however was quite bitter and not to our liking. You can charge your room directly if you're a guest. 3.5 stars only for breakfast ala carte or the grab and go. read more

We tried this restaurant out since we'd never visited the Outrigger. The resort itself is beautiful, but unfortunately the manta night viewing area was closed for construction. We were seated and greeted promptly. The atmosphere was open air and had a view of one of their pools. There was some live music to enjoy. We ordered a couple of cocktails to start, and they were good. For our meals, I had the fish special which was a mild white fish in a ragu with mushrooms and other veggies. My husband had a hamburger. My fish was okay, but his burger was not a $32 dollar burger. The fries were really good. Our waitress was nice, but she disappeared for awhile while we were eating. I had the Kona coffee espresso creme brulee, which was delicious. My husband had the Brown butter miso chocolate chip cookie, which he enjoyed. The location is lovely and the food was good, not great. My drink, coconut rum mojito, was fantastic but my hubby's, the Kona Sunset, was bad; nowhere near the right amount of liquor for a $17 top-shelf bourbon drink. Our shrimp appetizer had three prawns and was ridiculously overpriced at $21. I realize Hawaii is expensive, but we have had outstanding culinary experiences at Umeke's and On the Rocks, the latter of which boasts a far better location. Service was friendly, but slow, and we received someone else's food twice. This isn't a bad place to eat, it's just stupidly overpriced. We got in late on our flight and decided to eat at this restaurant at our hotel... it took them an hour to serve 11 people while everyone around us was getting their food. Once the food actually came... it was terrible. My fish was just disgusting. I could not even eat it without feeling like throwing up. 6 people got the burger and they were all cooked incorrectly. I would not eat here. The pool restaurant is 100 times better and cheaper. This place is overpriced and just not tasty at all. The drinks were bad and had barely any alcohol and the service was not good. The only nice thing about this place is that it has live music and it's really Pretty. Do not eat here. Surprisingly delish! Sourcing local really shined through on some of the dishes. Flat-iron Papaya Seed Chili Pepper Ribeye - This was the clear winner! We actually ordered this again a few nights later. Perfectly cooked slightly aged steak sans inedible fat or sinew that often comes with ribeye. We should had asked for more chefs garden chimichurri butter and papaya seed Demi-glacé since it was so incredibly tasty! Loved the ali'i mushrooms and shallots (although I would ask for them sliced and caramelized with the mushrooms instead of whole). Overall a solid dish. 5 stars. Chefs special - fresh catch mahi-mahi (could had used a touch more seasoning and hot pan sear) with perfect roasted carrots and broccolini on some nice mashed potatoes. I forgot the type of kimchee it had on top, but it was fantastic. Great combination of flavors and textures. 5 stars. Kids penne pasta - basic penne with good amount of butter and scant cheese. 4.5 stars. Everything was pricey, which is to be expected with hotel restaurants. But the food taste and quality was up to par for the most part. Our server deserves a lot of credit since she helped steer us away from some dishes and towards others. I hope the chef team takes into consideration what their long time staff (especially the ones with good taste) have to say about the rotating menu. I noticed the seafood chowder was not on the menu anymore and I asked about the new chowder and our server said it definitely wasn't as good. We were also visiting during a slower time so I'm guessing there are challenges on a number of levels. And shout out to the Cream-filled malasadas in the deli case...better than the fresh ones at the farmers market! 5+ stars!! read more

First of all The Kona Outrigger is a wonderful property, and we are definitely coming back. You should visit here as well, you won't be disappointed: great rooms, great views, great staff, and just the very best effort by every staff member we met. But don't spend any time at Piko. I spend time picking holes in negative reviews, and if you follow my posts, I don't log many negative reviews. In this case, I went over the negative reviews after our experience tonight, and found myself nodding my head in understanding. Everything is overpriced. The food quality is decent, with some nice dishes, but this is not a fine dining establishment. I know hotels are going to aim for a higher markup when you have a captive audience, but they've overreached. The portions are small, (we paid over $20 for 3 prawns) and my cocktail didn't have enough alcohol to even notice. I've worked in bars where we measured our pours, but this was something different. On top of that, the poor wait staff is imbalanced. (I saw one server for 4-5 expos) Bottom line we saw our server 3 times the whole time we were there, and everything took forever. It's too bad, because they have live music, which is quite good, and they have a direct view of Hawaiian sunsets. It should be a slam dunk, and yet somehow they are missing the mark by a long shot. Just so disappointed. I hate when I feel like I'm being taken advantage of and Piko feels like this at multiple junctures. Do yourself a favor and leave the property. Go to On the Rocks, which is just a short drive up the road and has no pretensions. Trust me. read more

Came with taro chips and pita chips. Hunters soup (10/10)-best thing we got, super flavorful and hearty with sausage and veggies, comes in a bread bowl Mac nut tartlet (7/10)-not too sweet very nutty and delicious. Smoked fish omelette (8/10)-potatoes are bomb!!! We dined here after getting in from our inter-island flight and most restaurants were closed. Wait was about 20 min at 8 pm on a Saturday to dine in at the restaurant, so we opted to do takeout and sit along the pool. We were helped by Hiro, who was very helpful and friendly! We ordered the seared fish which was hamachi and the price was $49. On the menu it says $39, but maybe upcharge d/t market price (?) Unfortunately, it was underwhelming. Fish was kind of crusty and tough on the outside and the dish kind of seemed like it was thrown together. My dad had the same thing and said his fish was dry. I think I enjoyed the purple sweet potatoes beneath the fish the most. My mother had only the ribs appetizer and says the meat felt dry. We also had two bowls of the seafood chowder which we actually enjoyed more than our dishes. Will probably not choose to dine here again, but if you're in a pinch with food options it's.. an option. French toast was nothing special - had many that were way better. Orange juice was good and I liked the service. It's nice to sit by the pool and listen to the waterfall while we eat. Overall, this place is just Okay. Definitely not worth the $100 price tag. Same meat you'll find at the luau, so I guess we know where the food for the $200+ experience comes from. Somehow it tasted a little better at the luau, so maybe they're using leftover meat for tomorrow's breakfast or vice versa. Located at the Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa, Piko is one of their newer restaurants. While we only ordered breakfast from here, they also have a dinner menu. We ordered takeout and got our food promptly. We got a loco moco and a monte cristo. The monte cristo was alright. The French toast part was nice but not as crispy as we'd like. It felt more like an over glorified ham and cheese melt on French toast. The strawberry compote was sweet and tart. The loco moco was a big disappointment. The beef patty and gravy were flavorless. And the rice just looked and tasted low quality. Even soy sauce couldn't redeem this dish. read more

This place punches well below it's weight. First off, it's a temporary solution while the Outrigger crawls along to finish Duke's (which based on the most recent viewing is probably at least a year or twelve still away), but the real problem is how Piko presents itself. You are heavily gouged on account that it's *the* restaurant on-site (if you don't want pub food by the pool) in an area that's already poor on options. The menu isn't Hawaiian, it isn't Pacific Rim, it's some weird hipster scrabble nightmare where basic items are doubled in price on account of unfamiliar ingredients being included. The burger itself is $32. A $32 BURGER THAT NEEDS THREE MENU LINES TO DESCRIBE IT. WHY. Topping that is the fact that I asked for salt, and the server came back five minutes later with a plastic tray with paper salt and pepper packets. So, charging prime prices and provide 7-Eleven amenities. If you're staying at the Outrigger, don't bother with Piko for dinner. Breakfast is OK, the coffee bar is good (when they're stocked), but go elsewhere for dinner. read more

My wife and I did a staycation at Outrigger Kona, Wife didn't want to leave the hotel and wanted to have dinner at the hotel. Noticed Piko was a newer dining place and figured why not give it a try. The sun was about to set and the sun beaming bright for about 10 minutes before it went over the horizon. Was a very nice end of day Kona sunset. Food and drinks were ordered and our server Matea did a great job informing us on the specials and took our orders. We had also nice local music playing and an artist from an old time Hawaiian local band we Liked Ho' aikane. I enjoyed the appetizer. Of local chips and smoked fish dip. My local ribeye was cooked to perfection and served to my liking. Wife enjoyed her meal also but can't recall what it was. Matea came by often and checked on us if we needed anything. We were staying at the resort and ate here a bit. The breakfast options and to go coffee were good. The dinner, however, was a really disappointing. The appetizers were good but the main dishes were hit and miss - one of our party loved the porkchop but I got the daily catch and it was inedibly dry and pasty. I told the waiter and he said he was sorry but did not offer any adjustment. The chicken was super boring as well. The miso chocolate chip cookie was yummy though. I would also say that service in general was also hit and miss, our waiter disappeared for long lengths of time, and the woman at the coffee place (Whendi) became an ongoing joke during our week for how rude she could be. On the other hand the bartenders were super friendly and helpful. In summary, could be great, could be bad, should definitely be better! read more

My bf and I live in Kona and don't typically go to resorts or tourist spots, but we had our niece visiting from California and we wanted to take her to a nice resort dinner her last night visiting with us, so we decided to stay in town and take her to Piko. The last time my bf and I were here it was shortly after they re-opened after covid, so we were also excited to see the new restaurant and try out some of the new menu items they have. I made the reservation online, through their website, and was a breeze making the reservation. We needed to change it to a later time, and it was very simple to cancel and reserve a new time without any hiccups. All made on the day we went, just a few hours before our reservation. When we got to the hotel (with free parking not too far from the front entrance) the hostess was warm and welcoming. We were about 15-20 minutes late for our reservation but they accommodated us and gave us a nice table close to the live music and a nice view of the adult pool, but also in a private corner where we could all still converse and hear each other. The live music is a nice addition to the ambiance. The last time we came to the restaurant was a couple of years ago and they have since remodeled the bar and sitting area, which is much nicer than it was before. Now to the food and service. We ordered a good amount of food; for appetizers, we had the chef's bread, seafood chowder, smoked dip, french fries, and sashimi. The sashimi app we had was amazing and highly original! Very fresh ahi sashimi topped with ponzu, ogo, pearl truffle caviar, and ikura (salmon roe caviar), sooo good! The micro-greens were also a nice touch on the sashimi plate. My niece loved the chowder so much, she almost ordered a second bowl but wanted to save room for her entree and dessert. For entrees we had ribeyes and the Korean braised short rib (forgot to take photos). Good mix of veggies with the ribeyes and the short rib was nice and tender. My niece had never tried kimchee but was definitely digging the kimchee fried rice that came with the braised short rib. We ended the meal with some Tropical Dreams ice cream (chocolate, coconut, Kona Coffee). Huge shout out to Chef Ash for the amazing food! Also to our our server, Tracey-Ann! We loved the ambiance of the restaurant. It's situated on the bottom level of Outrigger Kona and had live music every night. I went two nights with my husband. The first night we just had appetizers and he loved the chicken wings. I had the Ulu hummus, which was enjoyable. The next night we had dinner and I had the Roasted Puna Chicken, which I was warned was going to take 20-25 minutes, so don't order that dish in a hurry. My favorite part of the dish was the crispy canoe crops. I think they need to hire another waitstaff to accommodate the tables and I definitely recommend making a reservation. read more

The restaurant is horribly understaffed. The hostess was busy bussing tables in between attending to a large waiting crowd. We arrived from a tour at 8pm. Empty tables were visible but still the wait was almost an hour. Tables weren't cleared. It was extremely frustrating. I wanted to clear them myself. Finally sat down at 9pm. We were at the restaurant to celebrate the special occasion. It took over 30 minutes for our salad to be served. My wife got soup and it was cold. About another 30 minutes later our dishes were brought out. The two crabcakes were cold. The fish dish was not edible. Three of us got the ribeyes. One was cooked perfectly medium rare and was about a half an inch thick. The other two were about a quarter inch thick and were burned to a crisp. The steak was tough. It had no flavor.. We gave the waitress a nice tip and left hungry. This place needs a new chef and a new person who orders the meat. Epic fail! read more

My husband and I went for the Xmas Eve buffet dinner. Service was good and food choices were decent so no complaints there. The low rating is because we both got stomachaches on the way home. We pretty much ate the same things since it was a buffet so something caused the upset stomachs. It could be the raw oysters or the various pokes, but we don't know for sure. I guess the silver lining is between that and not eating the next day in fear of further upset, we both lost some vacation weight. I definitely don't recommend this weight loss program though. read more
