    Side of fries

What a lovely to have meal. Yes it's on a church campus. But it's not a church cafe if that makes sense, like they're not going to preach to you or anything like that. But you will most likely see people doing bible study or something like that on their own. The food is solid and is priced fairly with plenty of options on the menu. There is also plenty of seating options both inside and outside on a first come first served basis. I got the spicy chicken sandwich. The guy taking my order warned me that it was spicy but it wasn't spicy at all to me. So I was fine. Unfortunately my sandwich was burnt, but I was able to eat it with plenty of sauce to mask the burnt flavor. We also got fries to share, but they tasted like they were made with old grease. My friend got a beef sandwich which was huge. She liked it but could only eat half. Even though my food wasn't perfect I feel like it was just a one off. I've been there years ago and had a good meal. She's also been there a few times and she enjoyed it as well. There is plenty of parking on weekdays as long as there are no church events. Going during a church service though would be a completely different story.

Located on the Shepherd Church grounds, this cafe is large and clean. We ordered the Chef's Special, which was not good, the sausage didn't taste like sausage and it was hard. The potatoes didn't have any flavor and weren't even hot. The only good thing on that plate was the eggs. We also got the breakfast burrito, but it was too oily. For drinks, we had the Mocha and a Matcha Latte, and they didn't meet our expectations. They were so weak we ended up feeling sleepy before the afternoon, they definitely need more caffeine.

    Tater Tots

I have visited Pillars several times, especially on the weekend and considering how busy it is and the line that forms there is typically not a long wait for the food. I wasn't very hungry I was looking for more of a snack and got the tater tots. The environment is very much a cafe. There are tables with chairs, couches with coffee tables, high top table, and books/items for purchase. Taking my order was simple. They call out your name when your order is ready. The tater tots were warm and crispy with just enough salts. The sauce added flavor but they could be eaten without them. There is seating inside and outside and is a one of the several couches that is available. There is also water cups near the counter. Looking forward to trying more items here.

Coffee, 1/2 veggie sandwich, chocolate chip cookie

Just had lunch today at Pillars. This is cute cafe on the grounds of Shepherd Church. The atmosphere is casual and relaxing. There are inside and outside tables for sitting. The employees were very nice and accommodating at the time we were there. The food is very good also. I had the loaded veggie sandwich (very tasty) and a decaf americano coffee, also good. My husband had the tacos which he also enjoyed. The veggie sandwich was big (had to take 1/2 home). Also make sure to grab a cookie, they are very good.

Ordered a sandwich at 13:50, girl on the phone told me it'll be ready in 10 minutes, I arrived at 14:05, the cashiers/workers locked the doors and when I tried to talk to them they completely ignored me. Literally made eye contact with the worker and she didn't even bother to have any sort of communication. I suggest management to rethink about the employment of said workers (I don't know their name). This is absolutely unacceptable. I wasted gas just to come here. On the phone the girl did not tell me that they're closing in 10 minutes (the time when the sandwich was ready for pick up according to her). I'd like to add that as someone who works in food service, when you close a place, you close the orders, you don't physically lock the place immediately as you need to do a proper closing (cleaning) and also allow diners to finish their food / let customers pick up their orders that were made before closing time. This is really unfortunate. The lack of communication is outrageous.

    Iced Vanilla Latte

Delicious latte! You can add different flavored syrups to your coffees! I chose vanilla, they also have flavors like hazelnut lavender, and a few more.

The Sci-fi section was PACKED with trade papers, which is always a glory to behold as someone who misses the affordability and convenience books used to hold. Slipping a small trade paper of Terry Pratchett or a small copy of Little women used to be so convenient-rather than shelling out 20-30 dollars for a display piece that's bulky to carry around. The owner was also as helpful and sweet as humanly possible. He showed me right where I needed to be, and even helped me dig through the shelves to find if he had that one special edition of the secret garden he remembered having. They also have a small section with DVDs and CDs, which was such a fun dose of late-'90s and early-2000s nostalgia. I loved it. One of my favorite features was their "Surprise Reads" section. The books are wrapped so you can't see the cover, and each one has a short description of the story or theme instead. It encourages you to choose a book based on the synopsis rather than the cover, which I think is such a fun idea. I've discovered some fantastic books through "Surprise Reads," so I was excited to see they had a section dedicated to them. The staff were super friendly and helpful. They helped me look for a series (The Telesa or Covenant series) that I am trying to get. Unfortunately they didn't have the series but hopefully in the future. My first trip was about a year and a half ago when some friends were in town and we went record shopping. I'm not as big into buying records as I once was but I was immediately blown away but not only the selection of records, but the huge selection of VHS tapes, CDs, random odds and ends, and shirts as well. The store itself is pretty dang huge and once of the first things you see when you walk in is the stage against one of the walls. How many shows did I go too? well, only one because I live in DLTA so most shows happen where I live, so I rarely wanted to drive 45 mins to San Fernando. My second trip was for a night market around the holidays with my wife, and my third trip was last week for the Final 818 Day show. I arrived a little late to the show and walked in during Human Garbage and the night was truly magical from that point on. With a lineup that consisted of Internal Affairs, Piece by Piece, Carry On, Twitching Tongues, and God's Hate, I can safely say this was probably one of the best shows I've ever been too and something I'll remember for years to come. The atmosphere at this shop is positive, violent, and full of heart in the best way. The sound at this shop was dope (minus the frequent mic issues) and each set was perfect. I've been actively going to shows since 2003 and the fact that in 2026 I was finally able to see Carry On play, is something I will absolutely never forget, let alone that I got to see them play a small show instead of Sound and Fury Fest. Overall, The Midnight Hour Records was the best thing San Fernando had to offer and it's a shame that the city didn't do everything it could to keep it there. The downtown area is absolutely dead and this place gave it a bit of life that will sorely be missed. Luckily, West Hollywood seems to be the future home for this shop and I can't wait to check it out as soon as it opens. Long live The Midnight Hour.
