We finished eating our main courses and our oysters never came so we had cancel them. The server was nice and apologetic and I felt bad for him, he said a big party that arrived after us kept ordering oysters, pretty disappointing to hear. The sturgeon caviar tin came open but it was fully submerged in the watery ice container and was a total mess, I was pretty annoyed because is an $85 appetizer but I did not want to say anything. Full Version: My fiancé (now husband!) and I were getting married in a private ceremony in Brooklyn, and we wanted to make the day feel like a celebration, even though our original plans for a reception were postponed. Our parents and siblings, all dressed up and masked up, were coming into town to celebrate our special moment. Since outdoor dining is our only option right now, we were wracking our brains, with just 2-3 weeks to spare, to find a restaurant with outdoor dining, and, (as if it wasn't asking too much already) a special view for our special day. We are big fans of many restaurants on Smith Street and Atlantic Ave. But none seemed to fit what we were looking for for this moment. On a run through the BK Bridge Park Piers one night, we ran by the Pilot, and had one of those Aha! Moments. We thought that it would be too good to be true to snag a much-coveted seat at the Pilot, let alone 12 of those seats for our family, in just a few weeks time. We asked if we could speak to anyone to help us with a special-request reservation, and immediately, the friendly hostess brought up Carlos, the manager, from the boat. From the start, Carlos was the most accommodating, positive, and constructive person to work with. Hospitable is an understatement. He provided insight to how to best use our reservation space, to not only to adhere to social distancing, but to promote it, for the safety of our party, as well as the rest of the boat's patrons. Carlos never turned down an idea that we had, and only expanded on them, allowing us to create an intimate and truly beautiful arrangement for our little party. He treated us like family. Our server Jose, was the angel of the day. He was fast, funny, and rolled with all the punches of our crazy family and their requests. We were never waiting to order food or drinks, and he was always there to answer questions about the menu. And the drinks... they were flowing all night. Even with so many creative cocktails on the menu, when anyone wanted something custom, it was there in a snap. Even my father, who is "that dad" who only drinks one kind of domestic beer, was THRILLED when they brought him out a beer that they recommended for his taste and went above and beyond with the presentation. The food was fresh, plentiful, and the timing was spaced out perfectly throughout the night. Again, I cannot accurately describe our overwhelming gratitude to Carlos and his staff at the Pilot. I came here for dinner on a Wednesday night with a friend. The boat was located at the end of Pier 6. You definitely have to make a reservation since this place was very popular especially in the summer. There were great views of Manhattan and the water so be sure to come here at sunset. We ordered a half dozen of the Kusshi (west coast) oysters, the soft shell crab entree, and the lobster macaroni and cheese. Everything was fresh and delicious especially the oysters and the soft shell crab. Service was friendly and fast. I would definitely come back and try their other dishes. I was really looking forward to having a unique experience with Pilot, however, I instead left deeply disappointed, and frankly, baffled by the terrible service. I booked a reservation for 2 at 4 pm on a Friday a couple of days in advance. We arrived right on time for our reservation and were led to a table that was in direct sunlight (It was 90 & humid out). We made what we thought was a simple request to not be seated in the sun and to have a better view-- my back was facing the front of the boat and my friend had the sun directly in her eyes. It had to have been one of the worst tables on the boat. The waitress outright refused to accommodate us. There were a bunch of empty tables in the middle of the boat, but she insisted that they were reserved for larger parties. We then asked to be seated at the bar and were told that the seats were reserved. We were a bit confused since we too had a reservation and couldn't figure out why we didn't have a choice in where we were seated. To add insult to injury we also spotted parties of two at larger tables in the middle section with shade. When we pointed that out to her, she claimed one of the parties was there when the boat was empty, and I don't recall the reason she gave for the party of two that was sitting at a table for 6... Later, we saw another party of two being seated at the bar. I'm not sure what the issue was and why she was being so unaccommodating, but it was a really frustrating experience. I'm more than happy to follow the rules, but the blatant inconsistency was just hard to take and watch. It ruined our experience on the boat. Since we already had a deposit/credit for our reservation, we had no choice but to order something. It such a cute place. With Pilot, there's no option outside of outdoor dining because you're on a boat, on the pier. Limited reservations are available, but they also have walk ins....which are first come, first served. You're whole party will need to be present before being seated. The seating options are great, bar, bench...table. There's really no bad seats. The tables are spaced. The staff is masked. The service is fairly quick. The drinks and food: Watermelon Swizzle (NA) - delicious and refreshing Permanent Vacation - similar to that of a pina colada, delicious and island-y Burrata - delicious, light and refreshing. small portion sized...I would say it doesn't share well, but if you're not super hungry, it works Oysters (Wellfleets) - on the pricey side, but they were delicious and fresh TLDR: when you're going to a cocktails and oysters bar, you pretty know what you're getting yourself into, but they were great. Went to Pilot for lunch on Saturday afternoon. It is a fun experience, but not sure it is worth the cost, as I left as hungry as I came. Quality: Pilot is all about the setting. The food is perfectly fine, but very expensive. It is all about getting to enjoy oysters and drinks on a boat overlooking lower Manhattan. I actually found the non-alcoholic Watermelon Mint Limonata to be my favorite element of the meal, a perfect refreshing beverage. The Grand Banks Oysters Selection provides two dozen oysters with four of each type on the menu. Well shucked and presented. The Ceviche was tasty, but barely a bite. I also liked the Lobster Roll, which is rare when it is cold, but it benefited from the warm bun. Quantity: Everything is small portions. Value: $8.50 for a Watermelon Mint Limonata. $79 for The Grand Banks Oysters Selection. $19 for the Ceviche. $32 for the Lobster Roll. Ambiance: Pilot is a boat restaurant location in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Docked along one of the piers is a beautiful old boat, which has been transformed into an elegant restaurant. They have both table and bar seating, with some covering, but still expect sun to peek through. While the ambience here is nice and the food looks appetizing I did not have a pleasant experience dining here. I came here earlier today and I found the service unwilling to accommodate, it was very windy and my meal was being blown all over the place and my soda spilled, given these weather conditions I asked for a container to take my food home unfortunately they where unwilling to do this as it is "policy" to have the food consumed on premise. I find this silly and believe there should be exceptions made for your clientele if there are certain circumstances where it makes it difficult to consume your meal in peace. (It's slightly pricey for the portion size but nothing out of the ordinary for an upscale dinner experience, and they could definitely charge more considering the location. I've been coming to this place for years. Despite the overpriced drinks, it was always a good experience, until tonight. The treatment I received was so egregious that I will likely never spend money here again: My first drink arrived promptly, but my second they completely forgot about. After waiting 15-20 minutes, I had to remind the bartender. No biggie, these things happen. I ordered fries and asked them to skip the aioli (I don't purchase any animal products), and they ignored that part. Annoying, but I let it slide, I didn't even mention it. At one point I mentioned I would be paying cash, and was told they don't accept cash. This policy is illegal in NYC, but hey it's their business, I'm not going to give them a hard time about it. A few minutes later, the bartender brought me some food that I didn't order, and he kept insisting that I had (I ordered nothing but the fries). Three times he aggressively insisted that I had ordered it, and three times I told him no. (a few minutes later, he apologized, presumably after he found the person who had ordered it..). Strike four, and the bartender's rude and abrasive behavior was really over the line, but still I let it slide. The final straw was when the bill came. They charged a $1 'water service' fee for tap water, which I didn't ask for. When my friends and I had first arrived, they offered us water, and I specifically told them 'I don't need water'. They brought it to me anyway. No mention of any fee. When I pointed this out to the bartender, he said that they charge it to all customers, and that he would have to speak to the manager if I didn't want to pay it. He also said the fee goes to charity. I don't know if this is true, and I don't care. It's worth noting that when they present the bill, it's on a screen, and NOT itemized, they just show you the total, unless you ask to see the breakdown. I work in the service industry, including occasionally as a bartender. I will let a LOT of things slide, but I don't tolerate being lied to, disrespected, or cheated. I paid my bill in cash ($51 for two drinks and fries, not including the $1 water fee, and with zero tip.. One of those drinks consisted of 90% finely crushed ice, by the way..), and left. I don't plan on coming back. Bottom line, this business engages in dishonest, sleazy tactics, outright theft in my opinion, and at least this one bartender was rude throughout the night, in addition to incompetent service. Perhaps the bad service was a fluke, or just one bad employee, but the deceptive billing is a policy of this establishment, which can't be blamed solely on the bartender. read more

Received a generous gift card for Pilot, which I'd never heard of. Luckily the rain held off the night we went. We sat at the bar near the prow. If you're unaccustomed to boats, there is some gentle swaying that you should be prepared for. We were very pleasantly surprised by the cocktails and food. We tried the Paloma, a mezcal and ginger drink, and a tequila-strawberry one. All delicious! We shared a dozen oysters, the burrata salad, lobster roll and fries. Everything was very tasty. The lobster roll in particular was really delicious, with cucumber for a nice crunch. We even ordered dessert (key lime mousse) and not a bite was left. I've always wanted to eat on a boat and I was excited to find this restaurant. After a quickly made reservation in no time I was there. We were seated quickly upon arrival with a beautiful view of the city that was breathtaking. I must say the waves were a bit rough here and there that had the boat rocky but we got through it. The lobster roll was very delicious along side a drink the bartender made due to me not knowing what I'd like to have. It was tasty and strong but he did not have a name for it. Almost feels like you've left New York City... except the ambiance was kind of ruined by the John Cena looking host coming over the remind us how much time we had left on your table several times over. Pilot is located in the quietest part of Brooklyn Bridge Park, and if you didn't know it was there, you may have never found it. Of course, you've got amazing views of lower Manhattan across the East River. Not to be outshined, the cocktails are pretty good. Though at $15-16 a pop, you may want to be judicious about your choices. I definitely recommend the Spirit Animal, made with rum, Aperol, coconut, lemon, and strawberry. It's a vibrant pink and looks like hippo milk (hippo milk is pink, look it up!), but it's oh so delicious. Perfect summer drink. The only warning I'll give you is that it's not cheap to dine here, and they even charge for tap water. Also, that's after you put down the $25 per person deposit to make a reservation to begin with. Regardless, this is a spectacular spot to enjoy beautiful views -- and I highly recommend planning your dinner time to be around the sunset -- incredible seafood and just a total change of scenery to dine on a boat! Cocktails are also really great. I had the Iko Iko and the Get on Up (both delicious). Food wise, we got two rounds of oysters, the burrata, the chilled shrimp and the lobster salad. Super arrogant and obnoxious manager/s (It was a man and a woman both at the front desk) and poor bunch of staff that follow their orders. We made a RESERVATION in advance, sorry for the capitals but there is a reason for this. We reached the restaurant in time just to be given a seat right under the scorching sun. Now we understand this is a boat and post hurricane the water will be super choppy. But isn't making anyone sit right under the hot sun (without an umbrella) and them having alcohol a perfect recipe for nausea and sickness. We requested for either a table change away from the sun or a place at the bar or an umbrella over our table. The rude man at the front desk flatly refused to consider our requests; first by arrogantly questioning us if we even had a reservation and then stating the obvious that it is a boat restaurant and sun shine is inevitable. We should have known better before booking this place. After much discussion they agreed to give us a place at their Oyrster bar but only for 45 mins although we had already paid $25 per person in advance for two hours window. The saga doesn't end here, we sat at the Oyster bar with no service for 15 mins, post which when we barely started ordering one of the servers asked to to move seats. He directed us to occupy different seats at the bar and guess what? Right under the sun again By this time anyone can lose their patience. We decided to leave for a better place to spend our money and time. I can't believe why some people join service industry without any intention of providing any sort of customer service; accommodate requests, make customer's experience enjoyable and rightfully making their money. I couldn't finish the pricey meal. There was only one server for everyone on the boat and this led to me never getting a drink ordered but it showed up on the bill. Had the opportunity to come here on Halloween. Being located by the Brooklyn Bridge Piers makes this an excellent final destination for a date. I'll tell you now the experience itself; getting on the boat late during the night feels like a movie moment. The Manhattan skylines were absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately they were out of many drinks that night, but I had the opportunity to try the warm apple bourbon- which ended up being one of the best decisions that night. The rosé was also a great addition- but the burbon is a must have in the cold. The Lobster rolls were alright, but for any lobster roll lovers, I would recommend it. I enjoy their take on the Mac and Cheese as well, but the star of the show that night had to be the oysters. Eating the oysters out in the open on a boat is definitely a worthwhile experience. Took my Mom here for her birthday and really wish I hadn't. First time in my life I've given a $0 tip. When it rains a little, they pull out this awning. But it doesn't extend all the way, it ends DIRECTLY over the table. Water collects on the awning, and the boat sways. The result it dirty awning water periodically dumping right into the table. About half a small glass of water at a time. How are you supposed to eat food like that?? The boat and weather is out of their control. The really bad part was how they handled it. They said we couldn't be moved to an empty table because we were "locked into a table" and "we chose it during our reservation." The table next to us was in the same area, same reservation. It was a lie and I couldn't understand how they acted as if the situation was fine. I had to yell to get them to move our table over 12" into the walkway so we could actually eat food that wasn't getting awning water dumped on it!? I hate raising my voice at somebody but this was deserved. The manager tried to ease the situation afterwards but didn't make any additional accommodations. We just wanted to leave, badly. Again, wish I had taken my mom anywhere else but here. To add insult to injury, my wife's drink never came despite asking about it 3 times. Irrespective of the quality of the food here , there are few places in New York City where you can dine literally right on the water, such as at Pilot. Yes, there are other boat bars in New York- Grand Banks, Frying Pan and the Barge to name a few, but the pilot is less well known (and thus less crowded) and arguably offers the best skyline of the bunch. The cocktails here are delicious; would definitely recommend the 'permanent vacation' for those looking for a tropical-style drink on a nice sunny day. The food is really where pilot is lacking. The oysters are decent, but everything else we tried was overpriced and underwhelming. The lobster roll was not bad, but small and expensive for the size. We also tried the burrata which was essentially just a few cubes of mozzarella and ceviche, which again, was only a few slices of fish. With that being said, the atmosphere here is still inviting and unique without being too "blown up." The scenery is of course very unique being on an old ship at the tip of Pier 6 in Brooklyn... the view is stunning! I've wanted to try this place for years and was really disappointed when that became a reality. To start, the Bloody Mary was basically V8. My fiancé and I ordered a salad and lobster roll to share only to find out that the latter was the size of an hors d'oeuvre for $32. We came here to celebrate my cousin getting a new job, and this was by far the coolest bar I have ever been to! We got lucky and came on a gorgeous night. However, it does get a bit rocky when the water is choppy, so beware if you easily get seasick. Our bartender was 1. Super friendly and 2. Extremely talented! Our cocktails were some of the best I ever had! Super thought out and carefully crafted, and you could definitely taste it. It is pricey, but worth it if you are celebrating something special.
