Delicious, crumbly biscuits. I ordered mine with smoked brisket, a fried egg over-medium, and pimento cheese, then tossed on some hot sauce. It was delicious.

Pine State is a must visit whenever we're in Portlandia. It was a solo trip for me this time. I enjoyed a wonderful biscuit with a fried chicken breast, pimento cheese, all slathered in hot honey. Messy, yes. Delicious, oh my yes! I brought my wife a quartet of biscuits as an early birthday present. She was in Pine State heaven.

Was on my to try list, and i don't think I'd go back. The biscuits were tough and the jam was really sweet.

SO GOOD. First stop when we got into Portland this morning. I got a Bloody Mary and biscuits and gravy, it was incredible. It's pretty self serve in terms of sitting and bussing, but we didn't mind, it wasn't too packed. No problems getting a seat by the time we ordered. We loved it here!

Great biscuits and gravy. Also had eggs, hash browns and a single blueberry pancake. Pancake was probably the best part. The 2 eggs and the hash browns are both $5 but the menu frames it in such a way where you think it's $5 for 2 eggs AND hash browns. The very nice staff behind the counter explained this to me (and like 5 other groups of people from what I could overhear). It's very small inside with mostly communal seating. They have a full bar from what I can tell. There's also another restaurant inside that serves Hawaiian food but it wasn't open yet when we were there for breakfast.

We wanted a simple warm breakfast and coffee and Pine State is the best for a homely meal in Portland! This location has small seating but it's not too busy at opening time. We came on a Sunday at 9AM and it was medium full of guests. We parked on the street that said two hour parking. After ordering we got a number and sat down reading the hilarious Portland Mercury newspaper found at the door and self-served a mug of Covea coffee. The soft fresh biscuits arrived with a delicious gravy sauce that was heavenly! The Reggie sandwich with fried chicken and eggs was so filling we left stuffed! It's always a good yummy meal at Pine State. Food: - Biscuit and Gravy (House Made Sausage Gravy) - The Reggie sandwich - very filling - A La carte biscuit with apple butter gives memories of fall and orange red leaves - Coffee from a local brewery

This was our first stop on our drive down from Seattle to the Bay Area! Great breakfast, really enjoyed the biscuit & gravy with fried chicken as well as the biscuit beignets. The gravy was not savory enough for me but the biscuit itself was really good so I ordered a plain biscuit separately and that was delicious, with a nice bite on the crust and a great soft inside. The flavor was also well-balanced, not too buttery or salty like some other biscuits I've had. Will definitely stop by on the way up to try their sandwiches and see the biscuits showcased that way as well! The biscuit beignets were super unique and I really liked the powder sugar ones (although both were great). I also normally don't like butterscotch but the butterscotch/caramel dip went pretty well with the beignets. Would definitely recommend trying these if you're nearby!

By far one of my favorite spots for biscuits and gravy. Every time I try biscuits and gravy somewhere else, I catch myself comparing it to Pine State. Their mushroom gravy is incredibly flavorful, rich, savory, and perfectly seasoned. I could pour it over just about anything and be happy. Nothing else really hits the same way. Usually when I come for breakfast, there's a huge line out the door. Luckily, I started my morning late on Sunday and showed up about an hour before closing, no line at all, and we got our food pretty quickly. Service was fast and friendly, which made the whole experience even better.

DELICIOUS!!! Placed an online order and the overall process was nice and smooth. Everything came as ordered as well. I got the Reggie with Nashville hot chicken and it was a 10/10. Not too try and the spice level was perfect for me. The portion is good and the chicken was nice and big too. I also got the fried Mac & cheese which was heavenly - definitely day dreaming about it. My fiance loved his Reggie as well with extra Texas Pete on the side. Overall, highly recommend and I can see the hype!

Great menu - you can customize your Sammy as I did in this photo. Get the honey butter it's the best dipping sauce for the biscuit! My only regret is not getting the gravy too.

Wanted to go here for a very long time. I've heard about it as being a Portland staple and I just had never got around to going there. It was different then I imagined. Not in a bad way, just different. I didn't expect it to be counter service (meaning you order at the counter) and I didn't expect it ti be a seat yourself place. I also heard wait times were bad for seating and getting your food but we ordered, found a seat and got our food rather quickly. Service was great, friendly and prompt. I got the Reggie Deluxe. The gravy was amazing (I got the mushroom one) and so was the biscuit (Soft buttery and delicious) the cheese and bacon also complimented it all. The chicken in the sandwich was fine. It was a little dry but not terrible. Everything else made up for it. My kid got a biscuit two eggs and a snickerdoodle. Unfortunately he did not like his food much. He ate about half the biscuit a bite of eggs and a bite of the cookie. He thought the cookie was flavorless. I tried it, I thought it was okay not great. Overall I thought it was really good. I definitely would come back, probably would get the biscuits and gravy. With that said I probably would not bring my son again. This place isn't ultra kid friendly if your kid is remotely picky, just meaning there is no kid menu and I kind of had to piece together what he might like. It's more of the kind of spot you meet a friend or date for breakfast or brunch. The area is also kind of small so I you might plan to sit outside or just get your food to go especially if you have 3 or more people in your party.

I LOVE a good biscuit and they can be harder to find than you might think - unless you live near a Pine State location that is! On my last trip to Portland I tried one of their crazy stacked biscuit sandwiches which was good, but nothing beats their biscuits and gravy except maybe adding a fried egg on top. When I tell you I INHALED the whole thing at like 9 in the morning and was full all day! I also lucked out and got the last of their freshly made seasonal poptarts which made for a nice treat when I was finally hungry again. Can't recommend this place enough!

We decided on outdoor patio seating since the weather was nice & it was generally quieter outside. We were people watching for a bit and noticed that our fellow restaurant goers were waiting for quite a bit, but we weren't in a hurry, so it was fine. When our waiter eventually tended to us, he was incredibly friendly & apologetic, owning up to the delay being on him, but we were cool with it -poor guy was working a double shift. We started off with deep-fried okra, I ordered the fried chicken meal, & hubby ordered the burger. I got to pick the chicken pieces I wanted, so I went with 2 thighs, thinking they'd be smaller pieces, so I could maybe finish my meal. I opted for collard greens as well. The food came relatively quickly and was super-fresh. The fried okra bits were piping hot down to the last bite. They went well with the spicy aioli. We hung onto the aioli so hubby could dip his fries. My meal was so good. The chicken was incredibly tender and flavorful. The batter was just perfect and crisp. Mashed potatoes were smooth and creamy. Gravy was rich and well-seasoned. Collard greens were so tasty. The balance of textures was just perfection. I ended up having to pack up a piece of chicken because it was so much food, but I enjoyed every bite I was able to take of my meal. Unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. The service was good, but it wasn't especially memorable or exceptional. Overall, I'd describe the experience as average. It's been around 7 or 8 years since my last visit but I remember the fried chicken sandwiches coming with two thick, juicy, fried boneless thighs. I found it difficult to eat more than half a sandwich given the size and excess meat. Usually I would end up pulling one thigh out and saving it for later! I decided to visit again on a recent weekend trip to Portland, arriving for an early dinner at around 4:30 PM. It was surprisingly busy, with at least a quarter of the seats taken in the shared seating pool even though it was so early in the day. Luckily there wasn't a line to order and the food came out within 15 minutes. Fried Chicken Sandwich ($13) - Just as how I remembered, this sandwich is still huge with two breaded and fried thighs on a bed of lightly dressed, crunchy cole slaw. It's really tall and doesn't compress well due to the abundant crunchy elements throughout. There's the bun that's heavily toasted until extremely, almost aggressively, crisp and almost dark golden brown, absolutely doused in butter a la Texas toast. There are house pickles on the bottom bun, very quickly pickled such that it develops no acidity, but changes to that crunchy yet soggy pickle texture. The two chicken thighs are expertly breaded until full of crags and valleys, seasoned well, and fried until crisp. The crispy quality is of a lighter variety rather than a hard crunch, very delicate as compared to a typical flour based fried chicken dredge. The chicken is different from what I remembered. Instead of being juicy full thighs, almost an inch thick at the meatiest, these patties are thin, sad, like a single thigh butterflied and cut into fourths width-wise. The breading is far thicker than the chicken itself - in fact the chicken almost is an afterthought here, completely getting lost in all the breading and everything else in the sandwich. Seriously, look at some of the photos from other Yelpers taken in 2016 and 2017 and compare to my cross section photo. It's a huge difference. I bet it's a cost cutting measure and it certainly isn't an appreciated change. Maybe it's just a sign of the times - while the 2010s air waves thumped with 'All About That Bass," the thick thighs have now unfortunately been 2020s Ozempic zapped. The major downside of the sandwich is surprisingly the bun. It's by far the most dominant component of the sandwich. It's the crunchiest element and the butter flavor completely overwhelms the taste buds. This is why fried chicken sandwiches are usually served on soft and pillowy buns, or at least buns that are only lightly toasted, so the bread can focus on and cradle the crunch element rather than supersede it. This is the first time that I can recall a sandwich where the bun is the dominant entity. (3/5) Dandan Fries ($10) - These fries are deceptively filling. They're really snackable and give a distinct moreish quality. It's like a snack where I absentmindedly keep reaching in the bag for more and suddenly it's completely empty. The fries combine a somewhat lightly fried potato, a delicate crisp on the outside and an extremely fluffy almost fall-apart tender inside, with a nutty, spicy, and mouth tingly mala sauce. The sauce is thick, rich, filled with fatty goodness. It's actually a really good glue, adhering the crushed peanuts on the fries so well, nothing falls off while lifting the fries out of the bowl. I especially love the mini cornichons mixed into the fries. They add just a bit of sweetness and acidity that balances so well with the fatty dandan inspired sauce. Without them, I think the dish would feel far too rich. With them, the fries go down the gullet at a quick rate. (5/5) I can't help but feel a little disappointed at Basilisk. It's another one of those places that seems to have decided to sacrifice quality in order to keep prices relatively low. While I enjoyed the Dandan Fries, I'm not sure that's enough of a draw to get me to revisit. Bathrooms - Four unisex rooms shared with the other establishments in the building.
