I really enjoy sitting at a diner counter having a great breakfast with a hot cup of coffee. When I saw Pinecrest diner, I knew I had to try it. I was lucky enough to sit at the counter and watch them make breakfast like a well oiled machine. The kitchen area isn't that big, but the staff are able to server customers at a top notch pace. I ordered a breakfast with a couple of changes and was a little worried they would screw it up since they were zooming along but it was just the way I ordered. The staff is friendly, engaging, and keep the coffee filled. If you sit at the counter at Pinecrest, you can easily see all the dishes being made. I went from wanting biscuits and gravy, to chicken fried steak, to chili - all from watching the dishes go out. I settled on the chili omelet. I have to admit it's my first chili omelet, and my friends were commenting on "who the heck ordered that" until they saw it come to my spot. The dish was good and the plate was big. Was it a 5-star chili omelet? Well it had beans so there is that... The ambience and the fact I love a diner make it a place worth visiting. I will be back. read more

After a long day at work I needed something quick so I took a walk out from the Hilton and was going to stop in and grab a bite to eat but it look crowded to me. I thought let me walk across the street to the Jack-in-the-Box place and get a burger which was definitely the wrong decision and I quickly turned around and walked back to the diner and got seated at the counter. Let me add quickly the Jack in the box is just nasty there is some guy sitting on the sidewalk eating a burger unfortunately he must've been a homeless individual and inside I'm not sure what this person was it they were asking for money at the counter and then some whacked out girl came in and it look like she was just wearing a bra which was torn open so be very careful in that area. On to the diner review. I got seated at the counter right in front of the grill and let me tell ya them cooks or hustling on a consistent basis it's almost like an art form they got it down to a science. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with fries and a Coke and I must say it was a pretty darn good Burger in the same for the fries and it came out piping hot which was perfect Watching the guys at the Grill all of the food coming out looks really good and well prepared but know this is no fancy place but good solid diner food. We came shortly after 8 on July 4th. We were planning on seeing some of the fireworks but P had drank too much and we spent over 2 hours here. P had water, I had coffee, tea, and chili con carne topped with onion and cheese, enjoying all. The place did fill up but turn over was pretty quick with locals and young tourists. All the food looked great and generous. I think the server saw that P was recovering, didn't bother us, but brought more water. It's a great place, especially at the weekend when they are open around the clock. Very hard to find good places to eat late at night. And this is one of those rare finds. The food is nothing special in creativity and a good old diner menu but all tasted good and I can tell since o was there three nights in a row and had a lot of the menu choices. It's not cheap but they have to pay a lot of extras to have it open for such a length of time. And this also adds a bit to the only negative I have and that is the wait time for the service. The waiter was great funny and thorough - but it's only two people at the front door buzzing, collecting, and orders. It is absolutely okay since it's the night anyway and you might have not an appointment after dinner - but if you are starving after a day of work you just wish it would be faster. The kitchen crew is working their "best" off and there is not a second where one of them can stand aside and have a breath. So even when the service would be faster they cannot produce more food faster. And they are not shy about people in the kitchen. There are a lot for that small area and all are working hand in hand. Very exciting to sit at the bar and watch them. You just need to know this when you walk in hungry :) they doing a great job! So there is nothing I can take away since I like that place as an easy accessible diner with expected (or even better than expected) food quality. Those places need to be supported and preserved. Iconic diner? May worn out and tired diner. Ordered the sour dough bread, eggs (good), hash browns (cold) with country fried steak (terrible). The gravy is lard and the country fried steak is more like a burger dipped in flour and then thrown in the deep fryer. But I must say the buttermilk pancake was pretty good. We were polite and respectful while ordering, but she seemed bothered by our presence and made a point to check on every table around us except ours. When it came time to pay, my sister and I went to the counter and paid in cash. My sister held out her hand for the change, and instead of handing it to her, the waitress dropped the bills and coins onto the counter aggressively. It was rude, dismissive, and completely unnecessary. Her behavior was disrespectful and unprofessional -- the kind of attitude that makes good customers never return. While in San Francisco I made it a point to visit as many unique breakfast places as possible so that's what i did. One of the places on my list was Pinecrest Diner I arrived at 8:30 in the morning and there was a line which was to be expected it was Sunday morning and people are hungry . Since I was dining alone I seated right away but the wait for larger parties was about 20-25 minutes . It a small diner about 15 small booths and the counter tops for smaller parties had about 12 seats . Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day I ordered the southern comfort which was a Belgian waffle with eggs and steak . Oh and I forgot to mention the most important thing they are open late so you can go at anytime. We came here while staying in the area. This place needs an upgrade. The interior is outdated. It seems like this place relies on most of its business from tourists looking to see where the unfortunate murder of a waitress occurred in the late 1990s. It's really nothing special. The prices are outrageously high for such a minimal amount of food. The food is average at best but came out quick. Our waitress was nice but a line quickly builds up at the front door because the waiting area is about 1 ft wide. You wind up waiting outside the door if there is more than two people waiting for a table. The staff is busy serving people and not paying too much attention to the people at the front often enough to keep the line moving. I didn't use the bathroom but my husband told me it was "in the basement" and decently clean. Lori's Diner about two streets up is a better diner experience if that's what you're seeking. read more

I'm confused by the low rating. It ain't Michelin dining, but It's a great diner. We ate there twice on a short visit because every component of breakfast we tried was fantastic. Everything that people usually struggle to make crispy was crunchy to perfection: hash browns, bacon, waffles, toast. Everything was well-seasoned and just so solidly done. Went there for breakfast yesterday. Walking distance from our hotel. Were seated immediately and food and coffee were yummy. I ordered the French toast breakfast with the side of hashbrowns (nice combo of crunchy and soft inside), my husband ordered the chorizo scramble, and my son ordered the chicken tenders with fries. I have heard about Pinecrest Diner and tonight I went there. Christina is absolutely amazing! They were all over the restaurant on top of her stuff. I have gone to a lot of restaurants receiving poor service thinking this was the new norm and was blown away at how this one person was taking care of all tables with helpers. Not only was there service AMAZING! The food was so tasty and hot! Not lukewarm but hot and delicious. I had the moose and my mind was burst with the many flavors and presentation of it all. I definitely see why this diner was packed. The vibe of the place was old fashioned giving diner energy and I will definitely be back soon. What a great gem to have in San Francisco. Visiting for the weekend, this 24 hour diner is 1 block from our hotel and after a busy day wanted something quick, so we thought we'd try it. Walking in, sit anywhere, place is dated, service was ok, they took drink order then food, some smiles, some solemn faces. I ordered patty melt and onion rings, my wife a cheeseburger and fries. Patty melt was 1/2 pound patty, grilled onions, melted American on rye, could have used a little seasoning, but was good. The onion rings, frozen, not crispy, wouldn't order again. My wife's cheeseburger was good she said, comes with lettuce and tomato on the side to build as you like. Fries, shoe string type, frozen but were good. Restrooms are downstairs 2 levels. Arrived in the area early in the morning and wife and I came here for breakfast after a short nap. If you show up around 9 AM, there will be a line outside the door. There was no one taking reservations. You just waited until they had room and they called you in. Waited about 15-20 minutes before we were given a table. Gives you some to check the menu online. I ordered the Mighty Moose with Country Fried Steak. (Definitely worth the $3 upgrade). My wife ordered the Pinecrest Breakfast Special. Both ordered coffee, her's hot, mine iced. The Mighty Moose is 2 biscuits smothered in sausages gravy with bacon crumbled in, topped with 2 eggs. The Country Fried Steak sort of made it into a breakfast Loco Moco. The biscuits and gravy were thick, dense, and flavorful. The Country Fried Steak was tender, and paired very well with the sausage/bacon gravy. Wife's dish was pretty standard. Bacon was thick and slices were quite big. Everything else was fine, but I thought the pancakes were a bit elastic. Almost like a mochi. If you like that texture, then maybe you'd enjoy it. I would pass on the pancakes. Coffee was good and they came by to refill it quite a bit. Service was good, price is in line for an expensive city, and food is pretty good. Came here for dinner after my boyfriend wasn't finding our original planned restaurant appealing at the time, and heard about this place with his coworkers. The prices are pretty high - I understand this is San Francisco, but $19 for two pieces of french toast, bacon, sausage, and eggs is a lot. The place was pretty slammed, probably courtesy of some shows nearby. They had one waitress in charge of the whole place, and even though it's pretty small, she was rushing everywhere. We sat at the bar, and we could tell our food was ready, but she was too busy with others to give us our plate. It also took us a bit of time to be able to pay at the end too. The food ended up being okay, exactly as what you'd expect, nothing amazing. With that price, I thought maybe the portion size would at least be a bit bigger, but it seemed pretty normal. The french toast even seemed a bit small. To be honest, I don't think these kind of American diners are for me. They are definitely exceptions, but this was just okay to me. If the place had less pricey options (or at least larger portions) and had more servers helping out, my rating would have been higher. read more
