This one started off poorly and never recovered. The first issue was the service. I didn't care for our server from the beginning, and when we left my son commented that she was "starting to piss me off." Friendly service can overcome a lot of shortcomings, but that wasn't the case here. There was something on my seat when we sat down. I pointed it out, and a young lady took a quick swipe at it with a wet cloth and walked away, leaving me with a wet seat. Not exactly a great first impression. We started with the Sichuan Dry Spicy Chicken. Unfortunately, it looked nothing like the menu photo. "Dry" apparently meant chicken jerky. The small nuggets were severely overcooked and lacked the texture you'd expect from a dish like this. The Shrimp Fried Rice wasn't much better. It was nearly tasteless, and the shrimp were those tiny, flavorless specimens that added little to the dish. Frankly, it set the tone for the rest of the meal. We also ordered Soup Bao. While not terrible, the dumplings were denser than they should have been. A good soup dumpling should be delicate and light. Once again, the menu photo was more appealing than what arrived at the table. The lone bright spot was a beef-and-vegetable dish my son ordered. Some pieces were tender, others weren't, but overall I'd give it a solid "B." It was acceptable, though hardly memorable. To make matters worse, the food arrived at odd intervals. The fried rice showed up by itself long before the other dishes. Poor timing from the kitchen only highlighted an already disappointing meal. If I had been dining with just my wife, I honestly think we would have either sent back the dry chicken and fried rice or simply paid the bill and left the food on the table. The one thing this restaurant does exceptionally well is photography. The pictures in the menu looked terrific. I just wish the food we received had resembled them. Needless to say, we won't be returning, and I can't recommend anyone spend their time or money here. read more

So running through TikTok I came across a place down the road. I've passed it a million times. Where do I begin? What a gem! This is as sichuan as it gets. This is the real deal Holyfield. First. The menu is literally a book. With photos. Amazing. My waitress was very knowledgeable about the dishes and what to expect. She recommended some of the more popular things. I have been seeing ads that Pings opened a second location and was sad I couldn't make the grand opening. That being said I went for lunch and had to try the boiled beef and wow, medium spice so flavorful it was full of chunks of soft beef and cabbage. I was sad to hear Dashi closed and needed a Szechuan food fix. So we tried Pings. it's nice and bright inside. Very nice staff. We started with hot and sour soup. I wish they offered cup size soup like other places. It was flavorful, but I really miss the pork others put in their soup. The dried fried green beans are very good and on par with Dashi. I enjoyed the shredded sweet garlic pork. A little spice and a lot of flavor. My wife enjoyed the walnut shrimp. Next time we will try out the memory game at the table. read more

Stopped by for lunch with my mom recently. Having visited Sichuan House and Sichuan Garden on multiple occasions, it was refreshing to get someone else's take on Sichuan cuisine in San Antonio. We were greeted promptly as we entered and did not have to wait to be seated. The dining area doesn't appear to be big, but there were plenty of tables. After taking our drink orders we started looking over the menu. It was pretty comparable to the other restaurants I mentioned earlier. We decided on the spicy cumin lamb, walnut shrimp, green beans, and egg rolls. We did not have to wait too long for our food to arrive at our table. All the dishes were excellent and on par with what I have had before at other Sichuan restaurants. If I lived in this area, I would likely visit on a regular basis. If I could give Ping's 100 stars, I absolutely would! I don't live in the area, but I happened to be nearby today and decided to stop in based on the great reviews--and I'm so glad I did. From start to finish, the experience was amazing. The atmosphere is modern, welcoming, and genuinely the cleanest restaurant I've ever been in even the restrooms were spotless. The staff was incredibly kind and attentive, which made the visit even better. After looking over the menu, we asked our waitress for recommendations based on a few items we were considering. We started with the pork potstickers, and they were perfectly pan-fried, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. For our entrees, we ordered the Kung Pao chicken and Mongolian chicken, and WOW both dishes were packed with flavor. Everything came out hot and fresh, and we loved that we could choose our spice level. I ordered level 1, which I personally enjoyed, but if you're sensitive to spice, it may even be a little too much for you! While both dishes were fantastic, our favorite was definitely the Mongolian chicken. It was incredibly flavorful, and the sautéed onions, bell peppers, and garlic added the perfect crunch. The portion sizes were generous, with plenty of meat, and both dishes came with a side of white rice. In total, for two drinks, an appetizer, and two entrees, our bill came out to $48 which felt very reasonable considering the quality and portion sizes. Even though I don't live nearby, I will absolutely be making the drive to come back. It is 100% worth it! read more

Wow! I was not expecting to have such incredible food and service on their second day of being open! Everything we had was absolutely delicious! The dry fried green beans were charred and cooked to perfection with an incredible seasoning that just makes you want more! The shrimp rolls were a first for me and I was surprised by the sweetness of them but couldn't eat it fast enough. It was crispy deliciousness! The dry pot fish was freaking amazing! So many peppers! The batter and seasoning were perfect! We also had walnut shrimp and it was also incredibly flavorful and lightly battered and crispy. The place looks immaculate which we can all appreciate! You can really tell that there was a lot of thought put into every single detail. Even the chopsticks have Ping on them! The service was excellent and the owner was very friendly and seemed grateful. I had seen a Facebook post about @pingssicguankitchen so I realized they're already open. Tomorrow is the grand opening! We visited today to check it out. We tried their West Lake Beef Soup, Pork Soup Dumplings, Walnut Shrimp, Dry Fried String Beans, Classic Dong Po Pork. Dad ate quite a lot tonight. He loved the Dong Po Pork sauce. Sweet for the win! The meat was very tender and delicious. Everything was tasty and is made in-house including the soup dumplings. The steamed rice is high quality. Even the chopsticks is engraved with Ping's. Ping in Chinese means peace, and it's also the name of the owner. We met Ping when she came to check our table. I found out that she's from Chongqing, Sichuan. I shared my feedback with her. We didn't try the spicy dishes, which hubby and I will need to go back to try. Dad doesn't care for spicy foods. As you can see from our choices, there are non-spicy options. Trying and reviewing a new restaurant a week after its grand opening can be a bit premature , but here is my best attempt. It's been over 25 years since we last visited the mainland China and have been looking for the perfect restaurant that best represents their amazing cuisine, and this one made a worthy attempt right out of the rice box . The cheese rangoons & dipping sauce were just short of one my favorite Asian appetizers that I've had, or at least in the top 3 of mine. Fried, cheese and sweet! The Cumins lamb and the Walnut shrimp went beyond the typical American duplication of these dishes and were closer to authentic than we expected. Due to a mix up in the kitchen, they served the cucumber salad at the end of our meal instead of first. My recommendation is that if you are on a first date, then skip this appetizer because the intense and overwhelming garlic flavor added will ensure you won't have a second one. The restaurant is clean, has nice bathrooms and ample seating. Nice touches to the plates, silverware and chopsticks which included the restaurant name and logo. We met the owner, Ping, who is originally from China, and was very friendly to us. By asking for our feedback on our overall experience is not only a positive gesture for improvement, but shows she wants to please her customers. If you can expand the drink menu beyond can sodas, and add Iced Tea (you know we are in the south and temps are over 100d even though you would never find it in China) and add a few more servers when business picks up; then I like your chances. I went to Ping's for their grand opening and recently went again. The grand opening was very busy very slow service which was understandable. This last time it was better overall. The food was good not amazing. What I love about it is it is family owned and they take pride! Everyone is all in helping each other even kids! They all look happy and proud which makes you feel welcome. Now about the food, all the flavors are great. To me Chinese and specially Sichuan food needs meats with bones... I like using my hands eating my food. Unfortunately this is one thing that they only have meat without bones. It had wonderful flavor, and I loved the crunchiness of the chicken pieces. We also ordered the General Tso's chicken w/ fried rice and the soup baos. We usually frequent Yu Feng Asian Cuisine, which is just a few doors down, and thought we'd check out this new establishment especially since there are many great reviews. As we walked in my first impression was that it's nice to see a Chinese restaurant where everything looks brand new and clean. Bamboo steam baskets were strung vertically from the ceiling and used as decoration-clever and fitting! Plates, utensils and even the chopsticks were imprinted with their name. Their menu has a fair number of dishes to choose from. My husband likes spicy foods and I don't. We both ordered Mongolian beef. While waiting for our food we were offered a game to play. I don't know what it's called, but it contains an octagon board of wooden pegs and a dice of colors (vs dots) corresponding to the pegs. It helped pass the time. Our dishes arrived, freshly cooked with vegetables still having a slight crunch (perfect) and lots of sliced beef. While it was tasty, I could slightly taste the baking soda used in the marinade to tenderize the beef. If you know, you know! The dish was otherwise good. It came with a bowl of white rice. You can order fried rice for a slight up charge. I was born and raised in Hawaii where Asian culture and cuisine are abundant. I'm a foodie! Trust me when I say I know what good Asian food tastes like. All in all, we had a good experience. The food is good, but it didn't wow me. The prices are higher than most Chinese restaurants, but their servings are a bit larger too. We love Chinese food, especially Sichuan style, so we decided to check out the new Pings Sichuan Kitchen that's been getting a lot of attention and great reviews. For us, the overall experience was just OK. We arrived on a weekday around 6:30 and there were three other occupied tables. Shortly after, we were the only ones there. Our server was great! Very friendly and attentive, explaining everything perfectly. The owner was there, and I've seen a lot of mentions about her, but she never said a word to us in an empty restaurant. Not hello, not goodbye, not even a thank you. But that's not a dealbreaker. We ordered the potstickers to start. They were served hot and crispy, with a dipping sauce that seemed to be mostly soy sauce based, and it was very salty (as soy sauce typically is). We also ordered the Shredded Sweet Garlic Pork that wasn't shredded, wasn't sweet, and didn't taste much of garlic... but, again, it was very salty. The Classical Dong Po Pork was the standout dish. So tender it was practically falling apart, super flavorful, pleasantly sweet. If I were to go back, this is the dish I would definitely get. It's made with pork belly, so don't be surprised by the thick fatty layer, and it's not crispy like most people are accustomed to, but it is melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The Sichuan green beans were definitely not the best we've had, but the most we've paid. The server said all dishes are prepared at your choice of spice level 1-3, 3 being spiciest. A 0/zero would have no spice. We ordered between 1-2, but we may as well have said zero spice. Not spicy at all. The price in general is higher than most Sichuan restaurants in the city, just not as tasty as the others in the city. Everything has the restaurant name on it, from the dishes to the chopsticks and silverware, the specially printed to-go bags, everything. Maybe the high prices are to pay for these special, but unnecessary, touches. The decor is otherwise very cute, clean, and bright. Red, white, paper lanterns... very quaint. We would like to go back, just in case they were having a bad day with a broken salt shaker. For the "shredded" pork, the Sichuan pork at T Jin's just the other side of 281 is much tastier, better seasoned, better priced, and more generously portioned. Neither one is "authentic," but the flavor is far better. Of all the things we ordered, we would only reorder the Dong Po Pork, and maybe the potstickers if they put a little more effort into a better sauce. Check it out for yourselves. read more

This place is new. It looks new. Great staff and service. We ordered orange chicken and soup dumplings. The dumplings had great flavor but not enough soup to call them Soup dumplings. I normally don't order orange chicken but I did for my fiance and we shared. It was fresh, even the batter. Reminded me of my parents' restaurant. I would definitely come back here and try some of the more traditional Sichuan dishes so that I can better gauge for the authenticity as a Chinese restaurant.
